This was my first time at Cafe Polonia, and it was nothing short of AMAZING! My father was in town for my birthday and I had researched this restaurant, as he enjoys non-North American food, and enjoys hidden gems of the city. The co-owner of the restaurant was incredible, providing us with the history of the restaurant and his personal journey from Poland to the US. My father had the kielbasa plate with a potato salad that was INCREDIBLE!! I enjoyed the dill pickle soup and the smoked polish cheese- both AMAZING! We had a great meal here last night. I always enjoy any kind of authentic ethnic food so having a true Polish restaurant around is great! Generally a good sign at ethnic restaurants: folks dining here speaking the native tongue. Now I know that Kishkas are not something hanging out of your clothes if you dress inappropriately, as my Mother-in-law had me believing. The food and service were really good although my kids were a little slow to jump on board-they kept sampling this, sampling that, but never really dug into any one item, so maybe not the best place for kids if your kids aren't feeling adventurous. We had perogies with applesauce & sour cream, potato pancakes, an appetizer of scallops wrapped in bacon, and chicken dish ( I can't recall the name). The entree came with mashed potato's and two salads: pickle and beet. I liked it all, but I had the beet salad all to myself. Next time we'll come without the kids and try more adventurous fare. Oh-Schmaltz!-with your bread you get fat with caramelized onions and bacon. You can ask for butter. Absolutely delicious, authentic Polish food. Every dish, from the soup to the main entree was fresh, at a perfect temperature and made with high-quality ingredients. Just like Babcia's. The service was extremely quick and the male host was so friendly and running a smooth operation. It's clear their food is homemade and they run their restaurant with love and tradition. I've had lots of Polish food in my life, in Poland as well, and this is some of the best food. They have a well-rounded menu and a variety of Polish imported beers like Zywiec. I'm a polish girl from Chicago so I had to check this place out while I was in the Boston area. It was delicious! I got the Polish platter. The potato pierogi were melt in your mouth perfect. The stuffed cabbage was also perfectly cooked and the cabbage was super thin. The grilled polish sausage and kraut was tasty, but I prefer my sausage soft not crispy, Overall, I would HIGHLY recommend this authentic meal. A short walk from Andrew Station on the red line stands a small, but bright and cheery place with 28 seats - 7 tables set for 2-6 people each. It has a single private bathroom and a single pleasant waitress. A pile of magazines sit in the corner, and the other two parties in the restaurant at 6pm speak to the waitress in a language I do not understand. I am excessively early for my 6:30pm reservation for 2, yet she welcomes me and seats me at a table for four with a basket of bread and some ice water. The bread and lard is tasty, but I do not eat too much of it. It reminded me of British fried bread that I had attempted to create once after making bacon for breakfast... The restaurant is more than half full by the time my friend arrives shortly after 6:30pm. We end up sharing the Gypsy Pancake $16 (two large potato pancakes sandwiching a goulash of beef and mushrooms in gravy with a nice swirl of sour cream and topped with a little grape tomato) and the Goulash with Potato Dumplings $14 (which came with two cold salads - shredded red beets [sweet] and pickles [sour]). I think we both preferred the Gypsy Pancakes with the crispy potato edges. The beef in the goulash was tender. For dessert we selected the fruit crepe $4, which turned out to be a blueberry version - tasty, not too sweet, nice crispy/tender crepe. read more

This review is for my first visit on 8/20/17! Cafe Polonia had been sitting in my Yelp bookmarks for a few months- I bookmarked it immediately after I found out they had pierogis (tbh). One nice, late summer's day, we stopped by for dinner. The space was very cute and cozy. There were a variety of seating- ranging from window seats (which we got!), and family-style tables (able to fit more than four people!). Best of all, there were lots of natural daylight that filtered into the snug space. A basket of warm bread with butter and lard was brought to our table when we were seated. Then we decided to start with their tomato mozzarella salad as an appetizer, which consisted of tomato, mozzarella, and avocado slices on top of a bed of greens. It came with a side of dipping sauce (the name escapes me, but I know there was a lime component to it). Everything tasted superb- and best of all, f r e s h !! Its presentation was also so lovely- with tomato and mozzarella slices placed together in an alternating fashion. It was the perfect snack before the actual meal. We also decided to try Polish beer! We tried the Tatra ($7) and Żywiec Porter (this one tasted like coffee!! ($8)). They also have a seasonal beer/wine for the colder seasons. For the main entrees, I tried the Potato Dumplings dish ($16), which was a hearty, filling meal. It consisted of potato pierogis over a large helping of goulash (stewed meat) alongside two sides of salads. I loved it so much. The pierogis tasted amazing alongside the goulash. I loved that the sauce wasn't too cloying- and there was a good helping of meat in it. The side salads tasted fresh- especially the beets. They gave a good "break" from the pierogi-goulash mix. In town just visiting Boston for Thanksgiving weekend. I saw on Yelp about Polish food and Cafe Polonia had a lot of good reviews. We all agreed to come here for lunch because none of us really tried Polish food before. Luckily it was walking distance from our location as well. This place was small and homey little cafe. The waitress greeted us and sat us down right away. There was a variety of items on the menu that I was unfamiliar with, so I had to ask the waitress for some suggestions. She suggested the Polish Plate that had a variety of stuff to try. What I ordered was Appetizers: $8 Kiszka (Blood sausage) - This is a Polish favorite and I can see why after trying this. Having the word "blood" in the name does sound a bit uneasy, but this was by far one of the best appetizers I have ever tried. Maybe because it has a unique taste to it. Entree: $18 Polish Plate (Stuffed cabbages, three pierogies, and grilled Polish sausage kielbasa) - The portion for this dish was bigger than what I expected. I almost couldn't finish this, but it was too good for me to stop. I liked that I could try different variety to see which one appeals to me more. My favorite out of here was the Polish sausage and the second was the pierogies. The stuffed cabbage was good too, but by then, I was already getting full. Alcohol: For you drinkers, Polish beer was pretty good. I had the Zvwiec I had a really good experience here and I would definitely come here again when I visit Boston. I asked what I could have if I was intolerant to garlic and onion, and they said nothing on the menu, so they'd make me a special breaded pork chop with fries and beet salad. Located in the Polish Triangle, Polonia was an awesome find for a guy in town on business. Charming and intimate venue, small with dim evening lighting. Wood-heavy interior with deep red walls gives a very homey feel. I ordered the Sobieski Cutlet. The lightly breaded chicken was cooked to perfection, very tender and came out hot. The chicken itself doesn't have strong flavors but paired well with the sides of cabbage, sauerkraut, and shredded beets. The mashed potato was just dry enough and the cut-up bacon in top rounded it out. Strawberry crepes just melted in my mouth! The charm of the whole experience was slightly jarred by the out-of-place top-40 music softly playing and the merchandise on the wall. This place is amazing. From the appetizer to the main course, everything was scrumptious. I'm definitely coming back for more. I came here for lunch with a party of 5 on a Monday. We were the only ones there when we first arrived, but another party joined us after. This place is definitely a mom's and pop's local take on Hungarian, polish, and Austrian food. Located in Dorchester, this restaurant can hold about 15-20 people at a time, so it's pretty small. It's small, but very cozy. The decor is homey, almost as if you're at a friend's house for lunch or dinner. There are wooden tables and chairs. The chairs have cushions, so no worries about sore bums. There's a poster of Guy on the wall with his signature...so he probably visited he place and liked it enough to give them a signed copy of his face. lol. There's one unisex restroom. It's was pretty clean and spacious, considering how small the place is. The service was amazing. Super quick. Our waitress was friendly and attentive. She also gave us great recommendations on what to order. The food: I got a beets soup to start. It was super refreshing, and I'm was surprised by how amazing their homemade mushroom dumplings were. Highly recommend this to start your meal off. For my main course, I got their potato dumplings and boy, was it yummy! I had sides of beets and a cabbage salad. The sides complemented the potato dumplings well since the potato dumplings were savory and had a gravy base. I thought it was yummy and will definitely get it again. Other people got potatoes pancakes (it was so good with their complementary sauce) and polish plate (get this if you want a little taste of everything. It's also more on the meat-heavy side, so get it if you're hungry!). Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed my lunch here. I left with a super satisfied tummy. I also liked the fact that there wasn't a line out the door. Knowing how the restaurant scene is here in Boston, i was expecting to wait.
