Endive salad was interesting, but slightly salty and the dressing wasn't evenly tossed which led to disparate bites. Wished there was more pear to balance the salt. I usually don't love high-top seating, but our table was pretty comfortable. For drinks, I got a glass of Pinot Grigio, which was nice and crisp. For my first course, I ordered the Insalata di Indivia, which was different than I expected, but still very tasty. I just wish it had a bit more sweetness from the pear. I also tried a bit of my friend's Broccoli alla Griglia "Caesar", which was even better! I highly recommend ordering this as a starter. For my entree, I chose the Spaghetti con Vongole. We were lucky to get seated at the bar only 10 minutes after opening due to how many reservations they had, so make sure to get your seat in advance with time to look for street parking if driving. My husband and I are both big fans of chef Karen Akunowicz, so we knew we needed to come while we were in town. We intentionally came hungry because we knew we wanted to try everything. We stayed off with the piatti di Emilia, which had the most unique flavor. We loved the idea of this appetizer. From the jump, Willie was incredibly knowledgeable about both the food and drinks, explaining dishes with confidence and genuine enthusiasm without ever being overbearing. He guided us through cocktails, helped pace a large table order effortlessly, and clearly knew the menu inside and out. You could tell he actually cares about what's coming out of the kitchen, which goes a long way. I also want to point out the attentiveness to allergies and their gluten free menu if requested. We ended up trying almost everything on the menu at Fox & the Knife, and there were some clear standouts. For starters, the Taleggio stuffed focaccia is an absolute must try. Warm, cheesy, indulgent, and exactly what you want to kick off a meal. The broccoli Caesar was also excellent, with a very bold and punchy Caesar and parmesan flavor that really delivered. The carne cruda and burrata were both done very nicely and met expectations for a high end Italian spot. Clean, fresh, and well executed. The chips and fried chickpeas are solid if you're having a round of drinks first, but they're more snackable fillers than must order items. Worth noting the pacing is fairly quick, so don't linger too long before appetizers. Food comes out fast. For pastas, the tagliatelle bolognese is hands down the star of the show. It's the largest portion on the table and also the most satisfying, with tender and flavorful meat and rich sauce. Easily the dish I'd come back for. The pollo al mattone was also a highlight. Incredibly juicy, tender, and cooked perfectly. A member also had the spaghetti and was very impressed. The mains were a bit more hit or miss. The steak was cooked well, but the portion was small and ultimately unremarkable. Nothing that would pull me away from a dedicated steakhouse. The milanese was good overall, but could have been crispier, and while the mustard sauce helped, it didn't fully make up for some dryness. Unfortunately, the chocolate torta was a miss for me. Hard and dry, and not the finish you'd hope for after such a strong meal. Overall, great energy, standout service, and some truly excellent dishes, especially the focaccia and bolognese. I've been wanting to come to Fox & The Knife and snagged a reservation recently. It was a nice experience! I LOVE that they have a shellfish-free menu and other menus for specific food allergies. They'll also mark it up with any other specific notes for allergies, which I so appreciated. On the food side, the endive salad was lovely, with a lot of fun textures. The pistachios gave a welcome crunch and the yogurt on the side was unexpected but worked really well. They have an awesome foccacia stuffed with taleggio cheese--honestly, why aren't lots of other people putting cheese in their foccacia? Missed opportunity! I had spaghetti as my entree, which isn't something that I would usually order but it was good, although the other dishes were more standout for me. This place has such a great vibe, the waitress was very personable, it's lively and on the louder side, and the food is good. We tried the stuffed focaccia which everyone raved about. I think it's good but a little too much cheese (for me). It's very fluffy and moist and was otherwise delicious. The prosciutto was fantastic, so soft and tender, and not too salty like store bought ones. The funghi pasta was good, but not a huge wow factor for me. We also tried this Milanese crispy pork and it turned out to be a large slab of fried breaded pork, which was good but not what I expected. I was thinking more bite size pieces, and so it ended up being more food than I thought. I generally feel that Italian places do a great job with the appetizers and the pasta courses, but the mains are not on the same level (such that I will instead just order more pasta dishes and no mains). Not so here at Fox &The Knife. Everything was great. The appetizers and the pastas here are outstanding. The roasted broccoli with miso and the Jerusalem artichokes were both deeply flavorful, both the seasoning and the flavors that the roasting brought out of the vegetables was quite good. The pasta was noteworthy: the spaghetti with clams was one of the best preparations I've had of it in the US. The raviolo with an egg yolk was on par with the same dish at Cotogna in SF. For the main, we got the branzino. While I lamented not double ordering the spaghetti with clams, I was still very glad we got the branzino. It was expertly roasted, the fish was very tender but not overdone. The herbs it was dressed with were bright and complemented the fish, drawing out the flavor. It was like a super fancy grilled cheese and so so good. The cheese was incredibly melty and rich and the focaccia was well salted and flavored with herbs. It was probably my favorite bite of the meal, even though it is so simple. The broccoli Caesar was also incredible. The broccoli was charred and had a great smoky flavor that paired well with the Caesar dressing. It was both bright and rich. For pastas we got the pepe e cacio and tagliatelle bolognese. The pepe e cacio was made with goat butter and I personally don't like goat products. It was my friend's favorite dish of the night, but the goat was too off putting for me. The tagliatelle bolognese was amazing. It had a lot of depth of flavor and a pleasant bit of spice. The pasta was delicate and perfect for the sauce. Overall we loved our dinner. One comment is that the portions are quite small. You're meant to get 2-3 dishes per person (as our waiter explained) so the dishes are portioned as so. I didn't mind because then we got to try more things. I would absolutely come back and recommend to friends. Also, the woman's bathroom was wonderful.
