So my fiancé and I have been venturing here for about 8 years now. Though we never had an issue with the service, we are aware that the owners have struggled to maintain good relations with the community especially because it made national news. Aside from that, we haven't personally had an unpleasant experience here except for the long waits to get a table (usually 15 to 25 minutes), but they do provide beverages while waiting! While the menu is always seasonally changing, which has kept us coming back, we have noticed a gradual decline in the quality of the food over the years. Hoping the restaurant can recover from that and make a strong comeback... this is one of the few restaurants in the greater Trenton area that I would love to see succeed. read more

Blink and you'll drive right by it. I discovered this gem in my days before Yelp, through a magazine that showcased the best breakfast places in NJ. To my surprise it was only around the corner from my house. While the outside doesn't look like much, the inside reminds me of something that would be located in NY or Philly. The inside offers a bar area to sit as well as a wall of booths supplemented with tables. The space isn't overly small and I feel they make the most use out of the space. Now onto the the best part, the food! The menu consists of breakfast and lunch, no dinner here as they close up shop at 2 PM. So far I've eaten their French toast, bacon, eggs, pork roll, hash browns, and home fries for breakfast as well as the Reuben sandwich, cheese steak, French onion soup and fries. Not one item has disappointed me, the helpings are plentiful and inexpensive. In a sence, Cafe 72 is the diner I wish the Ewing Diner was. I believe their star dishes are off their breakfast menu, omelette, pancakes, fresh toast and breakfast sandwiches. Some of My favorites thus far is the grilled chicken sandwich, chicken and waffles and BBQ pulled pork sandwich. If you like spicy, add some sriracha to your grill chicken sandwich, it adds another flavor profile you won't expect. I always get their home made chips as well. If you don't want to wait for a table, I would recommend coming here around 11:45 or after 12:45. Since this cafe is smaller in size, you can wait up to 30-45 mins during the rush. Don't ever go to this place! The owner is incredibly rude and obnoxious. It first started when one of my friends walked in with an old Dunkin donuts coffee cup she had gotten much earlier in the day. The owner immediately called her out and yelled at her" no outside coffee or you will be charged $3.00"! She very nicely said no problem and threw out her old coffee in the trash can. Then we ordered three omelettes each with a side of turkey bacon. When the bill came we realized that they charge and additional $8.00 for two slices of turkey bacon each. Honestly, that is outrageous to charge that on top of a $14.00 egg white omelette. $92.00 with a tip for three people to have breakfast is insane. We then went to pay the bill at the register and gave the owner two credit cards to split the bill. He said very snarky, abosultely not! One card only. Even though they have an apple system that can easily split the bill. Many other places allow you to do this. The fig grilled cheese was very greasy and salty with barely any figs, and the hollandaise sauce on the Eggs Benedict was sort of sour, made for an off-putting flavor. Let me start by saying this, I went to what WAS my favorite breakfast spot until they told me they had NO orange juice?! What kind of cafe runs out of orange juice early in the morning? And my most recent experience that I will never forget. I decided to take my buds to what I still had high hopes for, giving it another chance even though they had no orange juice the last time I was there. There was plenty of tables open that we could've sat at but yet they chose to sit us at the last table in the back next to the BATHROOMS, DIRTY DISHES, AND KITCHEN. The pork was very dry the other problem I had was they give you fresh chips as you seen in the picture they were not seasoned at all. Plus they tasted very stale because of this! My recommendation is that you ask for seasoning on all your food so it is taken care of the correct way. I've been to CAFE Seventy-Two three times now. The first two times were last year and the most recent one was a month or two back. My experience from last year is different from this year. I remember being very impressed the first few times, really enjoying the food and ambience. However, in my most recent experience, it was underwhelming. I was looking forward to coming here again but when I did, the place looked plain. It could just be that when I came there in the winter time, there was more decor and string lights that made the place warm. The food, though, was not as I expected. I had the banana nut pancakes which I really did enjoy. Another person I was with had the Eggs Benedict with shrimp and the other had the quesadilla. Needless to say, my meal was banging and I couldn't even finish the whole thing...went at it Round 2 for lunch. Coffee was spot-on as well. I have another flight in a couple of weeks and I have to say, while I'll be sad to be leaving my boyfriend...I'm secretly excited that I have an excuse to come to Cafe 72 for breakfast again.
