Read some reviews and decided to give them a try after work one morning. The store looked small and I wasn't quite sure where to park so I parked on the street. The ambience is very laid back. The bottom level - small and there is upstairs seating. For breakfast I had the fresh squeezed OJ and the cinnamon short stack with turkey sausage and scrambled eggs. Overall the food was OK. I didn't really care for the pancakes but I liked the OJ and sausage. I guess I tried the wrong meal maybe I should of got the Hashbrown special that everyone raved about. Cafe Strudel is my husband's favorite restaurant, and definitely one of my favorites as well. The food is great and so is the atmosphere. We tried the Lexington location and it couldn't compare to the West Columbia one. Our personal recommendations are the Hangover Hashbrowns and the Pregame. The salads are also delicious but massive. You can't make reservations, but you can call ahead and put your name on the list, which I highly recommend doing. The wait can be long (45+ mins), especially on weekends. The only other major downside for me is that it's a pretty tight space, so navigating it with a wheelchair can be difficult sometimes. But the staff is as accommodating as possible, and the bathrooms are very roomy (though slightly muggy?). Parking can also be a little bit of a pain. There is a private parking lot, but only one handicapped spot and the lot is gravel. If you're lucky enough to score the spot, you only have to navigate on the gravel a few feet though. If memory serves, alternative parking information can be found on their website as well. read more

Loved this place! Originally I wanted to go to vegan restaurant which was closed for remodeling so then I googled and found this gem. Small quaint setting. Service was fast. Loved the decor. Now to the food in orders a black bean burger with a side salads (1 dollar up charge) burger came with sides but for certain sides there is an up-charge. I didn't mind because the prices are very reasonable. Also I arrived at 1 pm on a Thursday and they still were offering breakfast! Loved that. I would like to go back for a brunch because all of their menu items looked tasty. My burger was tasty and salad was fresh. My mom talked this place up to the high heavens so I was ready. I went for the special which were the breakfast tacos with eggs, cheese and turkey bacon and served with hash browns. Before ordering I asked if they had salsa and I was told yes so I went ahead. Well my tacos came out without salsa and came with a pico de Gallo. Pico de Gallo isn't salsa but here it is. I live in TX so maybe I only know the difference. The hash browns were cold and I asked to send them back. I got an interesting stare from the waitress and she asked if I ate one of the tacos. I took two bites but she said there were supposed to be three and I didn't get three. I got two. I told her I didn't eat a whole taco I promise I got two. My mom vouched for me. This is a restaurant, take the food back and relax. People complain about food but to accuse as if I ate the taco was really silly. I also sent back my yogurt parfait. The yogurt is very sharp and acidic. It hit the back of the throat and was extremely thick. Odd yogurt for a parfait. I was instead served the cinnamon pancakes with turkey bacon and eggs. My turkey bacon was Cold and my eggs were wet when I asked for them to be scrambled hard. For risk of being stared at by the waitress I said nothing. The cinnamon pancakes were really good and I could only eat one. Well done on the packages that melt in your mouth. Moral of the story: don't send food back, don't expect hot food and the yogurt is super sharp and acidic. So We ordered a pitcher of peach mango mimosa and it was absolutely disgusting! We asked for more juice to help even out the taste and we were given one small glass of watered down peach mango juice. We then told the waiter that it was still not right and she then offered a small glass of orange juice. Juice after juice and cup after cup I am now sitting here trying to make my own drink. After much frustration I asked to see a manager who also happened to be the bartender. After I explained that the mimosa was not good she then went on to explain that alcohol is not removed just because you don't like it. So I explained that it wasn't just because we didn't like it, it was because it was made wrong! Her response was that a mimosa is champagne with a SPLASH of juice. This is my second time at Cafe Strudel. The first time I had the Hangover Hashbrown breakfast. It was delicious. My server was amazing and attentive. Due to my amazing experience last Sunday I came back again. Today I order the Low Country Hashbrowns and my daughter the Hangover Hasbrowns. When the food came out it looked delicious. My daughter complained the Hangover Hashbrowns were burnt and didn't taste good. When it came to my meal which was the Low Country Hashbrowns it came with fried green tomatoes which I didn't notice. I tried it and immediately it did not agree with my taste buds. The shrimp that came with it and the sauce on it was delicious, so I tried to finish it. However, I noticed the shrimp had a fishy taste and the Hashbrowns were burnt on the bottom. My server was nowhere to be found, as a result I waited for 5 minutes. Finally she came over and I told her exactly what was wrong. She asked me if I would like something else. I told her the French toast with bacon and eggs. The manager came out and he looked unfriendly and unapproachable. While she was explaining to him my displeasure with the food he raised his eyebrows and looked pissed off. Our remade food comes out and we begin to eat. Since our server AGAIN was nowhere in sight I had to get up and go to the hostess and ask for a fresh set of utensils. Finally as I'm almost finished my food the server appears and at that point I asked her for more syrup. She brings that back 5 minutes later. I asked her for the bill. Once I got the bill I noticed the Low Country Hashbrowns meal was still on the bill. Once the server appeared I made her aware of the meal I returned still being on the bill. She then states her manager said it would have to stay on the bill. I asked her if I could speak with him. The manager who was at the table earlier came out and explained to me with a smile on his face that he would be unable to take the meal off since it was no fault of the restaurant. I then asked why wasn't that communicated to me by the server. He then goes on to give an example of how when he worked at Applebee's it was the policy if a customer was unsatisfied with their meal then it would be free. I immediately stated I'm not asking for anything to be free all I'm simply asking for is for the Low Country Hashbrown meal to be removed since I hardly ate it. He stated taking food off the bill if customer is dissatisfied with their food is not the "culture they want to set in here"! The end result is the manager only discounted the meal and I was made to feel like an I valued customer. I work way too hard for my money and definitely will not be returning to this restaurant. The service was horrible. The server and manager need hospitality training!!!! *** Update I asked the hostess if I could have owners contact information. She went to the back of the restaurant and got the same racist manager. He then comes out pokes me in the middle of my back with his finger and said I'll talk to you outside. We go outside and he begins to tell me how he already spoke with my friend who called up there and my firmed agreed with him. I then call my friend and put him on speaker phone and he stated he was placed on hold and never spoke with anyone. So the manager lied to my face. I told the manager I felt like he was beautiful by racist by making the statement giving free meals is not the culture they want to set here. He then stated he's from New York and his people are my people. I stated I was from Philly and no your people are white and I'm black. At the point I told him I felt unvalued as a customer and I wasted money by getting an extra meal. He then stated he can't stop people from ordering additional meals! So I said as a manager you were supposed to make me aware of your policy, therefore I'm not debating policy but the fact it was not communicated to me not was it posted in the restaurant. He said in "good faith" that's why he discounted it. I then told him he and the server were standing there and NEVER mentioned anything regarding the food policy. Yea I made a mistake & misread the description where the Low Country Hashbrowns came with fried green tomatoes but I would've dealt with it and just ate the shrimp and hash browns but would've asked for the hash browns to be remade since they too were burnt on the bottom. In summary this place has a mainly white customer base and it seems to me they want to keep it that way. If this had been a white couple I'm sure the results would've been totally different. read more

Outdoor seating with a nice wooden roof and open- so a real real outdoor seating, not the namesake outdoors with covered tents. We also had ordered the coffee bar - bottomless coffee from their selection for coffees. The food was great. We had the hangover hash browns- totally Worth the calories.
