But over the years I had seen staff and possibly ownership turn what felt like too often. The menu has always been decent although a few years ago it felt more creative and a broader selection. I still like the bar area but this time around it felt different. There was a new bartender being trained. While our waitress and clearly more seasoned bar tender was nice, the ambiance felt different. The entire staff was clearly focused on the party in the main dining room. And our food took a bit of time considering we only ordered soup and salad and we were one of four tables. Entire meal from seating to leaving...an hour and a half. This is not at the top of our list and an unlikely future candidate except out of convenience.

Over the hill and under the bridge. My journeys... nay... my conquests took me to Schraalenburgh…read moreroad earlier this 2025. My writings took me elsewhere in between then and now but I close the year with a score for "The Hill." The hills were rolling with endless space for me and my constituents to graze. We stretched out for a late lunch / early dinner (depending what type of guy / gal / etc you are). Not sure what led us down this path, but it was obviously the less traveled. We ate solo. The attention of the staff was, as you could expect, grand... yet still a tad slow on the food. Questionable, but I didn't ask the question. Questions need answers, and if you want to stop questions you stuff someone's mouth. They stuff your mouth alright. The calamari is not only tasty, but plentiful. A plate overfilling with calama you wonder what lovely inland jersey pond they rescued this quantity from. We got a side of fries to share, same story, but carb based. Clearly no potato famine in the near future. We finished off our finishings with a steak, some rigatoni and the duck. I always order best so I can't fully judge the other dishes. Clearly, I ordered the duck - Man of class and integrity. The steak was apparently a 4.5/5. The pasta was apparently a 3.5/5. But the Duck was a 5/5. Beautifully cooked, wonderfully presented and just filling enough. So - for me - I had a five star midday experience. But everyday is a 5/5 for me. I'm happy. I'm charming. I'm brilliant. Linguini B is undoubtedly ready to run up The Hill again in the near future. Knees high, head down, on the balls of my feet... ready for whatever comes my way.

To be fair, all she orders is the chicken salad sandwich and she has order nothing else. Today, that changed as we ordered the Apple Cranberry Crisp à la mode along with her Chicken Salad sandwich and that dessert was delicious! It wasn't too sweet and it had me thinking "what kind of apples do they use for this?" It even got reactions from everyone who dined nearby us in the restaurant. So the ambiance was very friendly as while it appeared like they were regulars, they were not because they've never seen the Apple Cranberry Crisp in person. We took our four month old infant and the place was accommodating to that as well. The decor was very traditional but very clean, like you were in the dining room of the golden age of your grandma's house (I hope that makes sense like it does for me). Anyway, I had the NJ Sloppy Joe and that was also delicious - especially with the sweet potato salad that came with it. I also had the cappuccino and the affogato because I had no coffee yet by this point of the day and I had to double down on my espresso intake lol. The Rolling Pin looks like it's been around for the past 75 years and I hope it sticks around for ever. Please give this place a try if you're nearby looking for lunch. You won't forget it!

Had an early Valentine's Day dinner with the wife the day before Valentine's Day. Brasserie Memere…read moreis an upscale French restaurant located in the Target plaza of Closter. The lighting is dim, the ambiance is intimate, and it looks romantic. I had made reservations so we were seated immediately. It's funny to note that the place settings were placed next to each other instead of across from each other at a four person table. We usually prefer to face each other, but when it's Valentine's day why not be cute? We ordered a few drinks during our dinner, the Sugar Plum Fairy, Memere 75, Avion en papier. My favorite was definitely the Avion en papier which had a slightly sweet, slightly bitter, citrusy taste. They had a pre fixe menu for Valentine's Day which unfortunately did not have the steak tartare i was interested in trying. But for $88, you get 3 courses: an appetizer, entree, and dessert. For our appetizers, we got the TARTARE DE THON (tuna tartare) and COCKTAIL DE CREVETTES GEANTES (shirmp cocktail). Between the two, i preferred the tuna tartare. The shrimp cocktail was good, but the only thing really special about it was the massive size of the shrimp and the freshly grated horseradish in the cocktail sauce. For our entrees, we got the CASSOULET DE CANARD and FILET MIGNON. The extremely tender duck leg confit was served with pancetta, white beans, toulouse sausage, and foie gras breadcrumb. It was rich, savory, fatty, and filling. All great words to describe food. The duck leg confit reminded me a little bit of a smoked turkey leg with the red coloring and shreddable texture. The filet mignon was served with pomme purée, wild mushrooms, and a bordelaise sauce. The filet was cooked medium rare as requested, but a bit under salted. The pomme purée aka mashed potatoes tasted like it was 50% butter so it was obviously delicious. Dessert was good, but my least favorite part of the meal. We got the TAHITIAN VANILLA CRÈME BRÛLÉE and the VALRHONA CHOCOLAT POT AU CRÈME. Both were very sweet. The brûlée crust did not shatter well, but it otherwise had a nice creamy texture. The chocolate pot was covered in flaky feuilletine which gave a nice contrast to the creamy chocolate, but my wife found the brandied cherries overpowering. The cherries made me think of German chocolate cake. Service was excellent. Staff was quick to refill water and checked on us constantly. Pace of the meal was relaxed and I'd even say they were slow to bring us the check since we had been dining for over 2 hours. My wife wants me to bring her back for their bottomless brunch on a Sunday so I will eventually be back.

I really wanted to enjoy the place, as I've had other friends frequent it. From the inception of the restaurant, they've had "pastrami" as the highlight. I really wanted that. They didn't have it. I told them the rest of my family's order and to come back afterwards so I can find something else. Decided on some chili as it was a cold day. They didn't have that either. I gave up and just didn't order anything for myself. Every thing came out bland. We didn't ask for no salt or lower sodium. Either way the cute little salt shaker visited a lot. At the price point that they have, I really was expecting something. The disco fries were scarce. I can basically count how many there were. As well as not knowing what kind of gravy it included on the side. The chicken tenders were bland, but at least the chicken was tender and the coating was crispy. Strawberry pancakes were fluffy and good on the first bite, but if left cold, it just became hard. The strawberry butter was a really nice touch and I enjoyed it. Too much strawberry for me, but will not lower the score for that. That's just my preference of taste. The mac and cheese was soupy and not thick, and again no seasoning. Cheeseburger was okay, didn't wow us. Also could not figure out if it was house made or not. It was lean, somewhat juicy, but it was a little tough. Wasn't horrible. What I found interesting was with the amount of fries that came with our order, they all came out differently. The disco fries were crispy, fries that came with the mac and cheese were over done, and the cheeseburger fries were a mixture of crispy, soggy and overdone. But one commonality with all the fries was how bland it was. Anyway, between the pricing and not having two things that I ordered, was just enough to put me in a sour mood.

Not enough words can describe the amazing food here…read more I didn't know what to expect when stumbling into Country MKT diner, and you shouldn't too. Take those expectations and throw them out the window, and open your taste buds and mind to new flavors to homemade dishes that will blow you away. I heavily recommend the mozzarella sticks which are more like bricks of cheese dipped in seasoned coatings that will make other mozzarella sticks think of a new name when these melt in your mouth and pull apart perfectly. The homerun of a sandwich is the Bun Jovi which is a honey Sriracha chicken schnitzel slathered with swiss cheese, pickles, pastrami, and coleslaw. And this dream of a sandwich delivers. The blue seating booths make the diner fun , with high backs they provide comfort and some privacy to your conversations. The staff is beyond freindly and each make sure you are having the best dining experience. To many positives about Country MKT Dinner to name, but each will create a core memory.
