Had to get my Cafe Yumm fix and introduced it to my nephew. I got my usual Yumm and Greens with chicken and he tried the Mezze Yumm Bowl. Both tasted great and my nephew is now a Cafe Yumm fan! Was promptly welcomed as soon as we came in the door and when our food was ready it was delivered to our table. I had heard from some of my friends that they didn't like Cafe Yumm, but as someone who was hungry and needed something small before a performance at school, I decided to stop by and get a small original kids bowl. It was pretty good even though it was just beans, rice and cheese. I came by more and got an original yumm bowl for adults and I love it so much. I have yet to try the other bowls, but since it's right across the building I typically have my classes at, I will come again. It can get pretty busy around the afternoon during lunch hours because many students including myself eat here, but I've always had good service and my food came out quick. It's a good studying spot here as there are charging ports which was helpful when I needed to finish an essay. I love this place! read more

Very convenient if you are going to the Keller as we are tonight to see Sweeney Todd. We both ate light. Soup/salad/bread for me. I did like the Asian slaw dressing. The curry tomato surprised me and did not taste like I expected. It was none the less good. Very tasty. My daughter had some yum baby. She's a rice lover so it was perfect for her. Typically leave feeling irritated. They charge you several dollars extra for extra avocado etc but don't give much extra. The take out containers are annoying af to eat out of. Tiny bowls with no lip, so if you try to mix it, it gets everywhere. Also. It shouldn't be $10 for rice n beans. But ohwell. It's better than McDonald's... I love this place so much! We visited Portland last June and we found this place by our hotel, I remember I got a lentil soup and some plate with tempeh, rice, and cabbage salad. I lived two blocks from cafe yumm and it took me close to two months after it opened before I gave it a try. All i can think of now is that I could have been eating cafe yumm for those two months. Usually I prefer chicken, pork, or beef on a rice bowl, but when I go to Cafe Yumm all I want are those fresh veggies! I would recommend trying the "original yumm" or "hot 'n' jazzy", but do not be afraid to customize your yumm bowl (I prefer mine without beans). Felt like eating rice and veggies, so stopped by for quick meal that won't weigh me down too much before my essay assignments. Near PSU so convenient location for student on budget and time crunch. Brown rice was bit dry, but sauce and beans made it moist and easier to chew. Avocado wasn't as fresh, but tomato and cilantro was. Extra tempeh added nutty flavors. Ordered medium and could not finish it. Will go for small next time. Cheese and olives seemed prepackaged/canned so high sodium. If I could post a meme that would reflect my reaction to my friends saying, "Let's go to Cafe Yum?" It would be Steve Carrell's "No, God, No. Please. No. No! No! NOOOO!" I have given this restaurant one too many chances to redeem themselves and their food just cannot deliver the flavor successfully. I am over them and I can't bring myself to go back. I am usually not this harsh but their food is just so awful that their yumm sauce can't even resusitate it. I've tried the jazzy, the chilean zucchini, and the salmon and all were hard to stomach. People have been raving to me about this place for ages. "The SAUCE" they said, always with this wide-eyed Disney deer face, "the saaauuce!" I trust these people. They're my friends. They're vegan, and Cafe Yum (I hate the second M and ! so I refuse to type them) is supposed to have some nice healthy vegan options when you're lazy and don't want to bother going home to eat instead. I shoulda saved my $8 because the bowl I got, the original bowl with beans, rice, veggies, sauce, avo, the thing tasted straight up like an old sock. Or worse than an old sock. Maybe an old foot. I opted to add tempeh and that literally stunk of old, bad garbage. I couldn't finish more than a few bites and was tempted to ask for my money back, but I'm not that much of a dick (even though I could've been). As someone who's been vegan for 20 years, I've never tasted worse vegan food. EVER. My meat loving Grannie makes better vegan food using salt, pepper, and water. Maybe this was a fluke? Maybe the person preparing my bowl looked at me and thought I was undeserving of the same feelings my friends have, thus sabotaging the easily-made-at-home food wad? This will remain a mystery. They pick up (even when you accidentally call to ask about a living social deal thinking you dialed another number) , they'll reserve a seat in a quiet spot of the establishment, and remember you were the person who called when you burst through the doors with 2 minutes to spare before you're meeting​. Cafe Yumm really is AOK, but after having the chicken teriyaki bento plate (which is perfectly tasty), I wish I had gone with the Jazzy Yumm Bowl (my first choice). Kind of reminds me of the strategy for taking multiple choice tests: stick with your first choice of answers and don't go back and make any changes in your first choice. This venue is squeaky clean. The staff members are friendly and accommodating, and the food is nicely presented on the plate and is brought out to the table quickly. I felt comfortable reading while eating and felt no pressure to hurry up and move along. I didn't feel $7.25 was too much for my chicken teriyaki bento plate, but I can see why college students would feel that way. I remember those days well and having a meal out at a fast food restaurant was a bigg-ish deal. This place has that trendy-corporate look to it where, in an instant, it could be changed into a, I dunno; Noodles and Company, Chipotle, or any one of those restaurants that obviously uses the same decorating firm that takes pride in it's one idea. The menu is laid out the same as these places as well with the whole "you're in the drivers seat when you eat here!" sort of mentality. I ended up choosing the Yumm! Bowl since it's their signature meal and it was reasonably priced. I get my number, I sit down with my water and I wait a mere 2 minutes before my bowl is brought to me. What I got was a bowl full of brown rice slathered with some crazy sauce topped with a whole bunch of mismatched toppings. I read what was included on the menu, but when I saw it for real, I was troubled at how good it would actually be. I was really hungry though, so I started to eat it. My suspicions turned out to be correct. It was so unappetizing that I ate maybe an eighth of it before I stopped. I just could not continue consuming that...thing, and decided the best thing to do what be to just gather up my stuff and leave. I ended up eating someplace else while grumbling that I just spent $5.00 on whatever that monstrosity was that Café Yumm! wanted me to eat. The worst part was when I got home and looked up the nutrition information, I found that not only was it really unappetizing it was also really unhealthy too. That medium sized bowl was 570 calories with 37.9 of fat , 9.45 of satfat and sodium was 702 mg. I will not be back. Not ever. read more

Dearest Cafe Yumm, I know you. You must have come and sat with me in my multi-colored Volkswagen Van in the parking lot at Cal Expo in Sacramento... was it 1992? We shared a discussion on the magic of brown rice and I complimented you on your brilliant rice bowl concept. I'm joking of course. My family and I experienced Cafe Yumm in Eugene. We loved it. Then, we found out that Yumm Sauce was being sold at our local health food store... so we bought it and made our own bowls. And now, they have appeared in the Portland area! We were so delighted by this that Cafe Yumm became our special destination for a family dinner while we were at an art show opening over at PSU. The most brilliant thing about Cafe Yumm is that there really is nothing special about the place and yet, there is something fantastic about the place. It's a dichotomy. If you, at any time in your life, have led a healthy, vegetarian, vegan, granola eating, hemp seed loving, sandal wearing lifestyle you've likely made a sauce just like Yumm's (with soy beans, lemon juice, oil & nutritional yeast). How brilliant they are to put these bowls out there for the masses! I have never had a Yumm bowl I didn't love. My advice to someone who has never been there is this: If you love rice, veggies, and beans with a savory/tangy sauce then get your ass into Cafe Yumm. If you hate these things, then DON'T go there. Another bonus for me (with kids in tow) is that It's a walk up to the counter & order setup and you eat your food at the table of your choice. The staff at each Cafe Yumm that I have been to has been nothing short of stellar! Patient, polite, helpful, accommodating... These are challenging things to have in a franchised business. I'm in love with the Jazzy Yumm bowl: creamy incredible sauce (which is actually good for you! Made from almonds and nutritional yeast), and includes avocado, beans, and jasmine (hence: jazzy) rice, tomatoes, sour cream, I think, and cilantro. It's incredible!!! I dream about this sauce! And, I love that it doesn't have meat, is gluten-free, and is sooo filling! You can actually buy the sauce in bottles, and we're planning on putting it on everything from eggs to burritos! I go here every now and then because it's just steps away from my office at PSU. What was super annoying today, though, was that I went well beyond the typical lunch hour and still had to wait forever for a simple rice bowl. And then, when I got back to my office, I realized that the pinto beans in my Jazzy Bowl weren't cooked all the way. Sorry, but uncooked beans are not Yumm. Also, it's kinda pricey for what you get. Yes, yes, yes. I cannot love this restaurant any more than I do. I started my Yumm obsession with the Beaverton location and the Downtown place is every bit as good. This place is great because it's reasonably priced quality food with fresh ingredients and is truly healthy fast food. It's incredibly vegan/vegetarian friendly but still offers options for my carnivore friends. Yes, the Yumm sauce is the key to my obsession, but their other items without the sauce are every bit as good. Their tofu skewers are a bit overpriced, but so delicious that I splurge on them every now and again. The vegan gingerbread cookie is good, but nothing to pee your pants over. The food is where it's at here! I've seen signs that they are offering breakfast now. I'd love to try it soon! TIP: Buy the sauce when you are there. It is good on EVERYTHING. This isn't a complaint about the quality of the food or the staff. Those are fine. This is a complaint about the quantity. I've been to Cafe Yumm twice in the last week for take out, ordered a bowl the first time and a soup the second. Both medium sized. Each time I opened the take out container at my desk I find it's only filled up about 2/3. It's just annoying. Charge more if you have to, or use smaller containers, but don't make take out customers feel like they are paying for something they aren't receiving. read more
