This restaurant has moved to 20 Mall in Guilderland. Our dinner there was extremely disappointing for so many reasons. As we entered it felt like we were walking into a freezer. I had to get a blanket from my car to make it through the meal. The extreme noise level made it almost impossible for us to have a conversation with our friends. There appeared to be no attempt to address the ceiling and wall acoustics. Our fourtop table was small and there was hardly any room to put our dishes on it. My Eggplant Parmesan was obscenely huge and swimming in watery tomato sauce. No waiter came to check on our meals after they were delivered. I had to work on flagging one down to get a glass of wine. The waiters were running through the restaurant adding to the chaos. I discovered that the bathroom stall was so small I could hardly move in it. I had to pull a handle on the inside of the door just to stand up and get out. Finally, the restaurant was completely lacking in decor. Despite extensive wall space I saw only one print on the wall. NOW WE'RE TALKIN' Phenomenal Italian cuisine served in a traditional setting. The food is excellent and the flavors spot on! I liked it so much I bought a gift card for my parents. Our table had three different appetizers that ticked the pallet. The Bolognese was excellent as was the stuffed pasta and Sea Bass. And, how can you not finish a spectacular meal without delving into some fresh cannolis. Staff was excellent. If there were any drawback, its that it can be pricey...but the entire experience more than makes up for it...and really...is not entirely unexpected for this type of quality. Like Italian? We got the lobster/crab ravioli, the sea bass with red sauce, lemon cake, and cannolis! Everything was fantastic, the ravioli especially was so good I loved the chunks of seafood right in it. Wed 11/28/18 was our semi-annual visit with our cousins to their favorite Albany restaurant. They have been regular customers for many years. This was our third time dining here with them. Caffe Italia is unassuming from the outside. Inside is traditional & comfortable. Seating for about 40 and just a fully stocked service bar. Always greeted immediately. Our cousins, the regular patrons, get greeted by the entire staff. The kitchen crew included. Our waiter tonight was Jimmy. Always cheerful and ready to answer questions or make suggestions. Full choice of spirits and a broad selection of wines by the glass or bottle. We had the fried (sauteed crispy) mushroom appetizer with the warm bread and olive oil. There were many familiar choices from your basic red sauce dishes to the more delicate veal & fish dishes. Two ordered veal francais, one GF pasta, broccoli rabe w/ oil & garlic, and one calamari fra diavolo. All came to the table together, hot, preffectly presented, and delicious. This restaurant is a little expensive but a very good value for those with discriminating tastes. Dinner for four with some glasses of wine and two mixed drinks was $208.70. Also halves of two meals went home with us. Again always excellent service and excellent dinners. Open for dinner only 5-10pm, closed Sunday. We will be back again. This is really a 2.5 star review. Going to go with 3 instead of 2, because or waitress was very nice and took great care of the table. I don't know why everyone seems to love this place so much. It's ok, but nothing outstanding. I came here for the first time a few months back and left unimpressed with thoughts of all the great reviews for it that I'd read. What happened? Was it an *off* night. It was good, but not great. So I came back again recently to give it another go. I wanted to like it, I really did. We started off with a clam dish. Was good until I had a clam that was so awful, I almost didn't eat dinner. For entrees one of us ordered the same dish I'd tried the first time. Linguine B-something. Red sauce, different seafoods, and pasta. The pasta was fine, the sauce tasted ok. In my opinion the seafood was borderline rubbery and there were too many tomatoes. It was drowning in the things. I ordered the zuppa di pesce, after seeing it on someone else's table. They looked like they were really enjoying it, so I figured it must be a good choice. Tons of different seafood, and a lighter red sauce. The crab legs were the king crab ones I prefer but the meat was overcooked, the clams were way too fishy.. actually the whole dish was way too fishy. I'm not a fan of seafood that tastes like the ocean smells. Maybe it was because we were the last people in there, I don't know. It had the potential to be a great dish, but wasn't cooked right and perhaps wasn't all that fresh. Another one of us got shrimp and pasta(forget the name.. seemed like a basic scampi dish) and had no complaints. I didn't bother to try it. Service was very friendly and attentive. Portions were generous.. you should definitely have leftovers if you come here. The atmosphere is nothing to shout about, it's a smallish dining room.. feels like a parlor. Nothing "fancy" and it has a laid back feel to it. Which is nice sometimes when dining out. I get the feeling a very large portion of people who come here are regulars. There were quite a few old timers when we first came in talking to the staff like they knew them. I don't know if I'll go back. I've been here twice recently and didn't leave wowed either time. read more

Overpriced appetizer - prosciutto with melon was $18! But the chicken special was amazing

It sucks that there is only street parking for this restaurant, but this place is worth the annoyance. Everything was amazing, from the bread, wine, appetizers, main meals, and dessert. They definitely have one of the best marinaras I have ever had, and their spaghetti carbonara was also delicious. Their caprese salad had the creamiest mozzarella I have ever had as well. Service was great, and the atmosphere is wonderful. White tablecloths, dim lighting, and classic Italian music all in an intimate setting. I researched Albany restaurants when I got tickets at the Egg. My research paid off! We had a wonderful meal. The restaurant - with tablecloths-is small, but I was relieved when they didn't stick us at one of those tiny tables for 2. The staff is awesome. Never had to ask for water (my usual complaint). Warm delicious bread basket. Drink, app(mozzarella Caprese), salad(included with entree), meal(shrimp Francese), dessert(traditional cheese cake with homemade whipped cream), cappuccino- all outstanding! Seemed like everyone else in the restaurant was a regular. We watched as each guest received a warm welcome and a hug. There's always a reason when diners return. read more

I'm not sure whether I am sad or kind of glad this restaurant is not in south Fla............ I truly look forward to visiting....now my 4th time. The rice balls lightly breaded and fried and hand made by Marie were incredible. To describe this wonderful treasure as a rice ball is like saying Kobe beef is a steak. It's not always on the menu but if it is order a dozen and take them home. As soon as the waiter told me about the specials I stopped him at Osso Buco and my decision was made. It was served beautifully nestled in the middle of a plate of smoothly mashed potatoes and the wonderful brown sauce. Every bite was better than the last one and there were plenty of bites. I live around the corner from Caffe Italia, and I've always wondered about it. How is it that it seems to always be full? What's their food and service like? What sort of people go there? Well, last night I discovered the answers to these questions, and they left me disappointed. The three of us made a reservation for 6pm. The fellow who took the reservation over the phone was quite pleasant, and I was glad that I could get a table for us even though it was only a couple of hours' advance notice. Upon getting to the restaurant, we walked in the front door and almost walked into a table. Luckily, the place was just getting going and so there were several tables unoccupied, including the one right in front of the door. We stood there by the door, as you do in any place that's not self-seating, and nobody acknowledged our presence. "OK," I figured, "perhaps they're just busy. I'll walk up to the bar/server's station in the back and ask to be seated." I got a bunch of strange looks for having walked back there, and all of the people in the restaurant seemed to stare at me like I was some sort of intruder. So now I'm going to talk about the sort of people who seem to go to this place: apparently, if you're old, possibly of Italian origin, and have been going to this place for years, then you're welcome. If not, well... read on. So we got seated by the lovely and attentive hostess. A waiter came over in his crisp uniform consisting of a loose white long-sleeve shirt with tab collars and black vest and black pants, handed out menus, and asked if he could get us anything to drink. Good standard opening. We looked at the menus for a while. The menu is broken down into starters, followed by a page each of fish, chicken, veal, and pasta entrees, followed by drinks and desserts. Only one of our crew tried anything with fish, and she loved it. She got a pasta with lobster and artichoke and had nothing but positive things to say about it. I got veal with a marsala and mushroom sauce, which I found to be tender and delicious, and my partner had veal parmesan, which was also tender and delicious. If, as Donald M said, this review was just about the food, then Caffe Italia would get four stars. However, it's not just about the food. We ordered, and the waiter helped us figure out what things were and suggested sides. We enjoyed the delicious flavored oil and bread while chatting, and drinks and salads came out. The salads were underwhelming. The dressing choices were house-made balsamic and a tomato-based dressing. Nobody got the latter, and we all found the former to be lacking in zest and to be overly oily. It was better if you got the gorgonzola cheese on your salad, but I thought that paying extra for a light smattering of cheese on my salad was not worth it. Oh well. Somewhere between salad and the main course, our drinks ran dry. We tried several times to attract the attention of our waiter, and after a few minutes I came to the conclusion that we were being actively ignored. I was about to get up and walk back to where he was standing to ask him directly if he could see me waiving my hand, but my partner asked me to try flagging him down one more time before making a fuss. So I did, and he started walking towards me. And he looked right at me several times, and then walked right past me without a word and without looking at me. This got me pretty steamed and had me weighing my options. Do we demand the check right there and then and simply leave this rude restaurant, or do we try and talk to the hostess to see if perhaps we've had some sort of misunderstanding? We opted for the latter, and got her attention. We made sure that this guy was still our waiter, and, lo-and-behold, as soon as we start talking to her, he shows up and acts as if he's been the most attentive waiter in the joint. What a bunch of crap! The hostess was confused about why we were asking who our waiter was, and I didn't want to make a big deal of it since she had been so nice, so I mentioned that we were trying to get another round of drinks and left it at that. We finished our overpriced food and left. I didn't even get an opportunity to take pictures of the place. It is cute, in a South Philadelphia sort of way. It's like someone's Italian grandma decorated the place: bunting galore around the windows, chintzy wall treatments, etc. It's not over-done, though, so it's enjoyable. Overall, I'm pretty upset about my experience at Caffe Italia, and I won't be going back. I don't care how good the food is: if I'm actively ignored at a restaurant, I will not go back there. My Mom took me here because she said she's been wanting to go here for a very long time. When we walked in we were completely charmed with the decor which was right out of a New York City Little Italy restaurant. It was impeccably clean and yet not updated but in a nice nostalgic way. The service was very personal and our server and the hostess were both charming. A family owned business for over 40 years, no parking lot and yet they were packed on a Wednesday night. The food was absolutely scrumptious. The menu has all of the classic Italian dishes plus some chef specials. This place is a bit pricey but well worth it for a special occasion and a nice quiet romantic dinner. HIGHLY recommend. I wasn't going to tell ya 'bout my good thing. This place is small and I am afraid if word gets out I won't be able to get a table at Caffe Italia. But I know to make reservations well in advance and we're regulars so here goes anyway, because I like you guys. This is the other little neighborhood friendly vibe place that knocks me out every time. When we go out and spend our hard-earned money, it is a special occasion and I expect to be treated well. The service here is off the charts - so professional and very friendly. This is like coming home to me every time. The food -especially the sauces, is incredible! Personally, I love the steak pizzaiola - aged NY strip steak in a pizzaiola sauce. The Seafood Dugan is abundant seafood in an incredible sauce. Lobster ravioli in a tarragon cream sauce! I have worked this menu over and over for the past 5 years and it's all so good. Homemade Teramisu is a must have dessert. I love the warmth - the greetings the hugs we always get here. I love seeing regulars chatting with their friends at the other tables. It's cozy romantic. It is everything I look for in a restaurant. Oh yes. They know their wine and food pairing. Especially the Italian wines. If you're new to this like me, this is a great place to learn. Lastly - they make a perfect martini. On-street parking around North Allen Street is plentiful if you don't mind a short walk. You can spend a lot or have an inexpensive meal here depending on what you order. I'm touring the red sauce joints of Albany because they are such a presence and have been around for decades. Caffe Italia is somewhat of a newcomer on the scene because the Romeo family only started it 30 or 40 years ago as opposed to say, 50 or 60 years ago. At any rate, they are preparing Nonna's recipes in that home-cooked style that we in the Capital District have been enjoying over the years with nostalgia in our hearts. It's small, which most of these places are, so you probably will do well to reserve a spot. On nights when I've been there the house fills up by about 6 o'clock or so, because it's definitely an after-work place for legislator and lobbyist types to unwind, or to do that last bit of business over dinner. Expect that half the dining room will know the other half. The service is affectionate, with lots of huggy bear and kissy face because apparently the customers are very loyal. The service team is well-practiced, so that there's always someone on the floor to take care of water, clearing plates , replenishing drinks and bread and checking to see if things are going well. I'm using the veal Sorrento as my tasting dish to compare across the restaurants. At Caffe Italia it includes bread and a salad with a side of pasta. The salad was a fresh combination of lettuces, grape tomato, a few shreds of carrots and onions - something light because what is coming will almost always be humongous. The bread is magnificent, toothy, flavorful and with a crust that won't quit. The staff is happy to supply butter in spite of the dipping oil with herbs that is automatically served. The side of pasta was actually very good. I make note of this because so often it's an afterthought. The veal Sorrento was a mound composed of layers. Breaded veal, breaded eggplant, thinly sliced mild ham and mozzarella, all baked in marinara sauce. I know that Nonna had to feed a family and I'm guessing she breaded the veal in order to make sure everyone finished the meal feeling satisfied and happy. Today we could do without the breading. I'd much rather have a smaller mound of food and not have veal flavored breading. I'm happy to have just a little veal. With all the other components of the dish it would be just as much a thing of beauty. But that is quibbling. The flavors are beautifully balanced and result in a delightful experience. Of course they offer a selection of fabulous desserts, and some day I may be able to resist the salad and pasta and actually try one without popping. read more

Lets get it straight from the start - if it was only about the food then Cafe Italia would rate 3.5 - 4 stars. Everything we ate, from the soft-shell crab appetizer to the Lobster and Crab ravioli main course, were excellent. I sampled my wife's Spaghetti Bolognese and my brother-in-law gave me a bite of his Sea Bass and they too were excellent. But it's not just about the food. We had very good and attentive service right up until our dinners were served. After that we ceased to exist. No one to come by and inquire whether we wanted another bottle of the very tasty Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio, or to clear our cocktail glasses and bread plates. I had to get up and ask for service and this was after everyone at the table had finished eating and had been sitting for an additional twenty minutes. Dinner for four with tax, tip, cocktails and 1 bottle of wine came to over $300. For that price I insist on excellent service and I have to say that Cafe Italia failed to deliver. read more

After hearing about this place for years I decided to give it a shot. There are so many Italian restaurants in this area its hard to settle on just one. They have been around for a long time and are very popular but the dining room is still quite small. I highly recommend getting reservations. We just happened to luck out and get a table. They start you out with a great big basket of crunchy Italian bread and a plate of garlic and spice filled olive oil. Perfect way to start a meal. I ordered the Chicken Vino Bianco which is sauteed in white wine, with mushroom and topped with mozzarella cheese and served with a side of spaghetti. The chicken was very tender and the pasta was cooked perfectly with only a little sauce, just the way I like it. The prices are a little higher than average and the portions a little smaller but you will definitely have a good meal with great service. And it feels like a NYC cafe with tables up in the windows right by the street. The desserts are all homemade and enormous. If you died and went to heaven and sat at the table for dinner with the saints , this is what the food would taste like. Look, no doubt you know Italian food. How could you not? If you grew up in America, it has been the default choice for food with flavor for at least a hundred years. In my high school cafeteria, there were two lines for lunch, the choice of the day, and the meatball grinder(sub, hero, regional name ) line . Choice of the day line. No wait. Meatball grinder line, out the door , down the hall. And so you know, there's Italian, and then there's Italian. And Caffe Italia is at the very pinnacle of the best Italian food you will have ever had. Period. Anywhere. Including New York City. Including even Brooklyn. I mean, melt in your mouth flavors so rich, you can hardly believe it is possible. Really. It is now the second generation running the place (but the recipes go back many more generations) . And it is as perfect as it was when I first started going there on trips to Albany maybe 25 years ago. The kids now in charge didn't try to introduce any big new ideas to mess up what works. You will not find Penne Arrabiata with Hunan Hot Sauce or Chicken Marsala on Mexican Avocado Toast. You want that kinda Con (fusion) cuisine crap, go to New York City where they will be happy to take your $89.00 for a tapas size plate of just microwaved ("fresh made to order ") Eggplant Parmigiana bites made with Vintage Vermont Cheddar (made in an industrial plant in Omaha Nebraska) ,Yummy! Take a selfie quick!! Caffe Italia is straight up consistent Italian classics plus , yes, a few dishes that grew out of the long time regular customer base and became you could say special dishes of the place over time. Which you will only find here and which are extensions of the classics. Like if you like Veal Saltimbocca , you will probably like their Veal Luciana. They have both. Really made to order . Just For You. By real humans. That actually know what they are doing because they themselves learned from the masters and have been doing it for years , and they are damn proud of it. Does it have every Italian dish that a mega mall fake Italian place offers on a double wide photos included for the morons plastic menu ? No, it does not. Caffe Italia offers what they know they make best. Period. If you actually believe that those book size menu places make handmade while you wait authentic cooking from scratch, by all means you should eat there regularly . You won't have to be embalmed when it kills you because you will already be 3/4 preservatives and plastic. Got a vegetarian or vegan in your dinner party? No problem. I know for sure. They get it and they can accommodate. Call in advance when you make your reservation (really pretty important) and discuss the possibilities. But even from the menu as is , there are multiple options. It is really nice that they don't get stuck with the mixed boiled vegetable platter while you tuck into the Shrimp Francese of the century. I think they have gluten free pasta available for their pasta dishes also. Small place. Perfect for great eating and good conversation with each other. Turn that iPhony off . It's located right on Central Ave and is probably one of Albany's best kept secrets. It's a family run business and it seems that everyone who goes there knows each other. It has that authentic Italian restaurant atmosphere, kind of candle-lit, low lighting mood. Our waiter was nice and friendly and checked up on us when we expected him too. Two other waitresses, who are part of the family that owns the restaurant, were also working. However, one was giving almost 90% of her attention to one table because there were city council members and lawmakers at the table. *rolls eyes* But it wasn't too busy otherwise so the service was fine. The food is fantastic. I ordered the shrimp and broccoli pasta and my mother ordered the carbonara. Both dishes came with a choice of salad. We ordered the Gorgonzola Salad and it was one of the most delicious salads I've ever eaten. The entrees took a little long to be served, but there was free bread to tide you over. Both mine and my mom's dishes were to die for. The entrees are quite large. I barely finished mine and my mom couldn't finish hers. After having a big meal at a fancy place, I like to order hot coffee to help my stomach settle and their coffee was delicious. It's an expensive place. If you want the feel of great Italian food in a casual setting, like grandmas dining room, this is the place. The dining room is very small, with only about a dozen tables. Another 4 or 5 outside during seasonal weather. You'll be greeted quickly, as you enter next to tables. Warm bread with pesto oil quickly arrive on the white tablecloth. Wine is only by the glass, which suited us just fine. Three glasses total between us. We ordered a special appetizer of the night, which was a seafood turnover. Light pasty, and lobster inside with a cream sauce on top. Excellent. Salads come with dinner, and were fresh and light. My wife had Lobster and Crab Ravioli, and I had Chicken Sorento. Both were excellent, and large enough for a doggy bag. We shared a sorbet covered in white chocolate for dessert. Tab was $108, after tax, before tip. Not cheap, but all food hit the mark. The service is almost family style; you have a waiter, but other staff comes by to remove plates, fill water glasses, bring more bread, and get another glass of wine. I was alittle disappointed that I had birthday reservations at 5:00 PM tonight and when we arrived the door was locked although we could see a waitress inside but she never acknowledged us at the door! We went to the Barnsider and had a delicious meal! A group of us visited Caffe Italia on a Friday evening. When we arrived we were greeted very warmly and sat at our table for 8. The waitstaff brought us out some very warm crusty bread and a wonderful garlicky dipping oil. Salads were fresh and crisp and their dressings are excellent. I ordered the veal sorrento. It was a large piece of veal with eggplant and mozzarella cheese in their delicious marinara sauce. Everybody else at the table really enjoyed their meals as well. I know in some of the other reviews, people have mentioned that the place is a bit pricey, and it is, but it is worth every penny. Our only downfall for the evening was the noise in the restaurant. If you're looking for a quiet, romantic place, this probably isn't it, at least on the weekends. Give it a try, the food and service are excellent !!! read more

Have been there several times, went today for my birthday, was not disappointed. The establishment is small, you most likely need reservation during the busy hours. We had a 6:00pm reservation for six and were seated immediately upon arrival. The wait staff is outstanding, very professional and attentive. The food is outrageously good and of a very great variety and price range. The dining area is not vey large and tables are very close together, if you are looking for a fancy restaurant you won't find it here, but the food more than makes up for it. If you like delicious Italian food, Caffe Italia is for you, I highly recommend and will be returning myself. read more

My uncle raves about this place and I had never been. We made reservations at the last minute and they were very accommodating. Parking is kind of a pain but not terrible. The restaurant is adorable. Very quaint. We had a cute little table in the front and our waiter came over right away. we ordered the broccoli and artichoke heart soup and salads with gorgonzola. Delicious. I had the chicken marsala and my uncle had the seafood and I have to admit it is the best meal I have had in YEARS! I do have to say I moved to Chicago about 4 years ago and have not had decent Italian food in a long time. But this was over the top good food! Big portions. Nice quiet place. My Husband who was born and raised on Mulberry Street in Little Italy says this is his favorite Italian Restaurant hands down. I go to Albany on business and we always come here. We go to Saratoga for the races and come here!! The food is fantastic!! It's hard to choose a favorite. Sometimes we go old school, spaghetti and meatballs, veal parm and ziti. I am going to Albany in July and the Husband made sure he's off work just so he can come!! The drinks are pretty good too! Just go, loosen your belt, share a dessert and enjoy! read more
