I can't get over the fact that they served tiramisu in a sundae glass but I'll eventually get over it. I guess. This place seems overhyped but it's one of those tiny cramped cafes that isn't conveniently located at all and that you really have to hunt for but once you're there, you're like ahh, I totally get why this place is hyped up so much. It features authentic artwork and antique furniture (seriously, there's a Caravaggio school painting on the wall that apparently they refused to give to any museum), the decor is reminiscent of lavish Italian royalty (like the bench once owned by the Medicis I sat on), and you'll get some pretty legit desserts and drinks here. Not the best place to study (small, loud, and one tiny tiny bathroom) but a great place to wind down with friends. read more

Only reason I did not give 5 stars to this Italian Cafe is me being spoiled by Trieste and expecting live mandolin music. Other than that, it is a very cozy place, great if you want to have some cafe the way it is supposed be served, a panini and to socialize. Everybody is siting close enough to have a little chit chat and most of the time you end up meeting some new folks or at least exchanging some warm smiles. Ehhh, to me this place is all atmosphere and history. It awkwardly breaks up the strong of ethnic eateries, tourist traps, and bro bars lining MacDougal, and it doesn't always feel like a refuge due to the stream of camera-toting tourists and NYU kids trying to rally into one more pre-vomiting session of rage. The coffee's OK (superior options abound on Bleecker) but my cannolo was a flop. When you think about Rocco's or Ferrara's cannoli against Reggio's, it's like comparing a buxom chicken to a malnourished pigeon. That being said, the interior if pretty. If you look at the large tea/coffee pot in the back and let your mind wander, you might even escape the scene. read more

Stopped in for some drinks yesterday while out for a dog walk. My daughter and husband wanted hot cocoa, I ordered a Caffe Moka. My daughter picked up a blueberry muffin. We got the items to go because we had the dog with us, figuring we'd drink them in the park. My husband decided to go back inside to get a pastry, and so my daughter sat at one of the outdoor tables. The waitress now tells my husband that because my daughter is sitting, we have to have table service. Uh, it's 45F out, we're out with the dog, we're leaving, he just wanted a pastry. I made the kid get up. Service at the takeout counter was somewhat grumpy and I didn't get the whipped cream on my moka. :( I live for whipped cream. Other than that the moka was good, and my husband loved the hot cocoa. My daughter didn't like it as much because it was a rich, dark variety - and she's a kid. I don't think they get proper tastebuds until they hit at least 12. My husband's Sfogliatella was all right, but living in an Italian enclave, I think we have better here. read more

Exellent interior and history. Great Espresso. We came here as a group of 6 adults around midnight on Saturday and stayed nearly 2 hours there. We were taken here by one of our company who was the most local expert of village, as one of the best Italian traditional cafe. We were all amazed and quickly fell in love with their atmosphere and the gorgeous interior. This is an Italian cafe, and their espresso is great. This time I ordered cappccino, and thought it wasn't as great as the one I had at the french Cafe Lalo in upper west side of New York. But still the taste and flavor of their espresso was great. I will probably order espresso or cafe macchiato to fully enjoy what they have to proud of. My friend already went back the very next day as he was deeply in love with the place. I hope to go back soon and maybe finish the book I am reading. Great Italian pastries. I heard that there were more cafes like this location back then before tourist places and chain places, and bars took over. It's a bit overrated in my opinion. Limited menu choices. We had brunch here and it was very expensive one. You got two eggs and a small English Muffin for a cost of $15. $15 for a plain French Toast? Not even a coffee is included with that. The worst part for a party of 3 the bill included 20% service charge. I could make eggs Benedictine and French Toasts much better. Bathroom is so tiny. If you are a bit big and tall forget about it. A very cute little cafe with delicious pastries and warm drinks for a cold day! You could spend hours in here just taking in the good vibes.

Dropped in for a small lunch with a friend and didn't really know what to expect. The ambiance going in was antique, with chairs and tables spaced out in the cozy cafe. The server told us to seat as we choose and we took to a little corner in the restaurant. The server was super friendly and fun to converse with while ordering! The food was exceptionally delectable. If you're into the taste of pound cakes, I'd suggest trying the Italian Cheesecake. Served with slices of strawberries, this cheesecake had a bit of a creme brulee look with the density of a cheesecake and the feel of a pound cake. While drier than traditional cheesecake, it was still awesome. I skipped out on the coffee but definitely have to go back to try the Viennese coffee! If you're in Greenwich and looking to pass an hour or two or are looking for a casual late morning date spot, this is the place to be! The food leaves you super filled, the decor keeps the place enticing, and there is a lovely view outside from the window. The only thing is that I think there's might be a $10 or $15 minimum? The coffee was good. The Tuscany Soup was good (see photo). The server was excellent and attentive: Slipping through the close-packed tables (see photo) to get to us in the corner, and taking photos of us with my iphone. Well, four stars is generous. The waiter was awesome. The drinks were great. Perfect place to get a Bloody Mary or cappuccino. The food however... was "uninspired" to say the least. My boyfriend and I happened to be on MacDougal during the day (weirdddddd) and stepped in for breakfast. THANK YOU for not disappointing! I truly appreciate consistency and you get that here. I was a bit apprehensive because normally you compromise one thing for the other when prices are affordable. Their breakfast, lunch AND dinner are good. Goat cheese and the smoked salmon on my omelette was yummy, nice portion size and only $7.50. We also got a plain croissant, side of Rosemary potatoes and 2 poached eggs on wheat bread covered in "a blend of European cheeses." Cafe Reggio is a quaint little place, easy to get to. It makes it a great meet up spot for you and your friends. The staff is lackadaisical and the customers are mostly regulars. The menu is a tad pricey. I paid $2.50 for an Americano that was pretty good. However, it cooled down rather quickly. A Chai Tea Latte is almost $6, which was disappointing and ridiculous. The decor is really nice. Lots of nice paintings. Again, great place to grab an Americano and not be hassled. It's a lot quieter on the inside than you would think. read more

I've been coming here for over 20 years! This is the place where I've had some of the very first café lattes, and ever since, I've been coming back for their coffee and beautiful century old setting. Very pretty terrace on a wonderful street. I tried their cheese platter with honey and walnuts, good but nothing special. This is a great place to stay warm in winter, just stay away from their doors...what's up with New Yorkers? I think their all in denial about how cold it is here in the middle of winter...no one has double doors!?! Always great to come back here, nothing changes, nothing should. This is one gem in NYC that is not that well known. This coffee shop has been open since 1927 and the Ambiente still looks like from that time. The coffee is good and the desserts outstanding. Feed your eyes on a 1902 built espresso machine with gauges and ornaments. The restroom is tiny. But this is a must stop when you are visiting the big Apple. Trust me you won't regret it. I'm only giving a 3 for one reason...service. In this case, none. The system keeps changing the stars to 4. I'm a regular here, and have been for at least a decade, when I used to work in the area. I usually come alone, to take a break from everything. There is generally some staff that recognizes me and we might have a brief chat. Nice people. The service was never fast, and if you're overseas, that's par for the course. It's very busy all the time, mostly with young, college aged people, but really it's all types of people, and you can relax. Daytimes are nice and used to be a lot of locals, and the vibe lent itself to writers and people who just want to be. But tonight I totally could not. I went in around 9:00pm and it was busy. There were 3 staff there, none I recognized. I sat for about 15 minutes, and was ignored. I sat in the corner where the service bar is, and there were 2 staff that were feet away and ignored me, instead drinking their drinks they had on the tables there. It seemed only one server was working it all, and they were told my table number, I saw one of those staff members point to me and say I needed to order. Another 5 or so passed, and nothing. I had to get up and leave. Several of them watched me leave, I walked by them, and made no attempt to say anything, walk up to me, like I didn't matter. I think I saw the owner walk out from the back at that point, as I was walking out. Shame on you all! I'd have other words for your lack of courtesy, but I won't curse publicly. read more

I learned a few things on my last mission to Reggio. Always order to-go! And if you order to-go, but wanna sit and chill for a few and rest before you start walkin again, then you get an entirely different drink, in a mug, that "if you leave before you finish, we'll pour it in a paper cup for you". Every time i go in i get the same thing, a simple medium coffee with milk and sugar. Usually im on the move and would rather kick it outside for a minute on a stoop and people watch, than sit in the stuffy cafe. The 'coffee' i get to-go is (i believe) steamed together with the milk and sugar, making for a nice sweet and tasty blend, but when i was forced to get it in a mug, i got a boring espresso with water with milk and sugar on the side. Not cool! The waitress was unfriendly, the wifi is terrible, and there are no power outlets. Yes, i realize this isnt an 'internet cafe', but theyd be better off not even offering it in my opinion. And those, what were they, six dollar cannolis? No. $5 for a pignoli tart that would be about 3 bites? No. Ive been to Reggio many many times, and if i had continued to order to-go, i probably would have bumped em up to 5 stars, but after this most recent experience, i had to drop em. Im just not so hyped up on the Reggio...at least for now. read more

Bottom line: Nice place to bring visitors to sit and chat with, seeing as to how it is known as the "home of the original cappuccino." The interior design is pretty unique & cute. Definitely not worth coming to on a regular basis though: coffee is typical and food is bad (at least when I went). The waitress seemed a bit caught off guard when I asked if they put designs. She told me that they don't do designs, but she was nice enough to put a cute little heart on my coffee. FOOD Tiramisu was just okay, it was actually a bit dry. Ravioli was bad. Everything about the ravioli was just bad. PRICING Seeing as to how it is a well-known spot, everything here is way overpriced, especially the food. I used a restaurant.com coupon that took almost $10 off my order, but the bill still ended up being very pricey (~$40 for 2 people, including tip and discount). ATMOSPHERE & DECOR The best part about Caffe Reggio is its decor -- it has an antique/vintage feel to it. I was luckily able to get the window seat, which was really nice! That spot has comfy chairs and much more lighting than the rest of the cafe (it's really dark inside). I liked examining the art on the wall. It was all really very cute. It gets pretty loud and crowded here starting in the afternoon, so it may not be the best place to sit and read. Plus, people are waiting for seats when it gets really crowded. We actually just happened upon this place and found recommendations on it in our guidebook after the fact. I have to say, we felt lucky to have stumbled upon it. The huge cup of coffee was tasty. My wife enjoyed the cappachino, especially after reading about the history of the place and its impressive machine. I loved the salmon and egg sandwich and my wife's eggplant and arugula sandwich. My daughters both enjoyed the stuffed croissants. The place is artsy and quaint. The tables are super small but only add to the ambience. Art adorns the walls. Our server did a fine job. She was friendly and knowledgeable. If you're looking for large portions, low prices, something fast or lots of room, skip this cafe. But if you have the time to sit and enjoy the experience, give it a try. I didn't mind the cash only term, but it would have been helpful to know it before we ordered. read more

I know the cafe is historical and one of the oldest ones in Greenwich Village... but they need to revamp this place and the espresso is not even good! We went in the summer and were seated all the way in the back corner. And it gets hot and stuffy in there! They finally turned on the ceiling fan, but it didn't help much for circulating air in the whole cafe. I was not impressed by the espresso. It was supposed to be double shot, but it kind of tasted like an americano (espresso diluted with water). I would not go back. It feels old, grungy, dirty, and the service is slow. This place was great! Such a cute little spot for a late night coffee or latte. I came in here with my boyfriend while we were waiting for our comedy show to start down the street. The wait staff was friendly and the prices were very reasonable for the area. The inside made you feel like you were in a different time period. Super cool decor and cute seating as well. I got a Medium size latte here and although it was a good deal for the neighborhood, $3.50 for a Medium Latte w/Vanilla, I found the latte to be mediocre. The temperature of the milk was really high, so much so that I'm fairly certain the milk was burnt, and they were pretty heavy handed on the vanilla syrup. For an extra dollar there a lot of coffee spots in the area that van serve up a significantly better latte. On the upside, the caffe is really cute. The small tables, soft background music, and kind staff makes it easy for me to imagine sitting here for a few hours to catch up with a friend or get work done / study. On the whole it wasn't a bad experience, but the fact that there are so many other coffee shops nearby makes it unlikely that I'll be back. read more
