My friend recommended this to us and I'm so glad she did! This place has amazing vibes with incredible history - the owner introduced cappuccinos to the U.S. and the author of Little Women, Louisa May Alcott, lived across the street. If you love old New York, this place is worth a visit. Open since 1927 and even featured in The Godfather Part II, the atmosphere is the real draw. It's beautiful, historic, and full of character. You genuinely feel like you're sitting inside a piece of the city's history. Service was great. Fast, attentive, and efficient, but they don't rush you out, which makes the experience feel relaxed instead of transactional. Where it fell short for me was the food and coffee. The cappuccino was watery and disappointing, especially for a place that prides itself on its coffee heritage. We came here as we were walking by the area on a Saturday afternoon. The place was packed! We were able to snag a table for two and it was comfortable, but FYI it can get very tight. We didn't order any food, we only got drinks. I got their sangria - it was OK very strong compared to other sangrias and the apple chunks in it were a nice touch, but the apple wasn't as sweet as it tends to be in sangria. I'm giving it a four star mostly because of the vibe it has. I finally got to try Caffe Reggio today, ducking in just as it began to pour outside. The moody lighting, art on the walls, and softly playing baroque music makes you feel as though you've stepped into a European salon. It's still a favorite haunt of college students and old intellectuals alike. The smell of espresso and cigarette smoke wafting in from the open door only adds to this wonderful atmosphere! I ordered a cappuccino and tiramisu. Both were excellent, especially the tiramisu, which was not too sweet, spongy and not soggy, with the perfect amount of creamy mascarpone and coffee flavor. The espresso in my cappuccino was strong and rich. The waitress was very kind, and let me take my time reading long after I finished the coffee and dessert. While the prices may be steep, and it may at times be filled with pretentious NYU transplants... at Caffe Reggio it becomes so easy to tune everything out, to catch glimpses of old New York just beneath the present. Upon entering, you can immediately see the historic charm, vintage decor, and antique furniture it has. It was actually a very fitting place to be on Halloween. For those who don't know, this is the first caffe in the US to serve cappuccino (since 1927)! The original founder reportedly imported an espresso machine from Italy that's still in use. We got the Cappuccino for a caffeine boost and the Italian Cheesecake as a sweet treat. They both complimented one another well. The Cappuccino was smooth, soothing, and well-balanced. The Italian Cheesecake uses ricotta instead of cream cheese making it slightly grainy, tangy, and less sweet. I didn't mind but it's certainly not as rich or satisfying as a NY-style cheesecake. It's a cozy spot where you can enjoy a classic Italian coffee & dessert. Definitely worth stopping by! read more

Been coming here for years and first off the service is hit or miss. They are sometimes attentive and polite and other times lazy and unhelpful. Never any consistency, but the food and coffee make up for it. Their carrot cake is bomb along with their lattes and of course their cappuccino, which apparently was first brought to the US here. The apple cider came out piping hot and I think was the best I've ever tried. Comes with a cinnamon stick in it. My mint latte was good, but unfortunately the syrup was not stirred in very well which i didn't realize until I was almost done and it became too sweet. So if you get a flavoured latte, stir it well. Soup had an interesting flavour pallette, I believe cilantro in it? I had never had Tuscany soup, but I liked it. Caprese was great with the oil & vinaigrette and some salt & pepper added on top. The chocolate mousse is huge, very sharable! We had to ask if it has nuts for my lover's allergy because I tried it first and it tastes of almonds. I have to say thank you very very much to the staff for being honest that they did not know. I know that some people would just make up an answer just to have something to say in response and would've risked his health. He got a different treat on the way home just in case there truly were almonds, and all was well. Stopped by this location to get a warm drink. When we entered, the location was packed with people enjoying their coffee and conversations. We waited around 10 mins to get seated. The staff apologized, but it all good. Gotta understand it around West 4th. When one became available, the staff cleared up the table for us and sat us down. We ordered a macchiato & lavender latte which IMO I couldn't really taste any essence of lavender.. sadly. We also ordered an order of fries. They were okay, regular fries. We also ordered a tiramisu and Italian cheesecake. The space is a bit tight but everyone is in their own conversation so you just enjoy the vibe. A friend recommended that we check this spot out while waiting for the Comedy Cellar, as it's just a few doors down. This was a cool place to stop into. They boast having served the first ever cappuccino in America and still have an old espresso machine on display, along with 80+ other pieces of artwork for a real 'old world' vibe. The place was packed when we got there at 8:40pm-ish on a Monday night, but our group of 6 somehow by the grace of God was able to be seated at a corner table. We were stuffed into the corner like little sardines. Luckily by that point on our NYC trip, I was used to being in a cramped space with a ton of other folks. The cappuccino was delicious-certainly one of the best we had on our trip (and we had several, believe you me. Cappuccinos are my husband and I's favorite go-to 'fancy' coffee bev). It wasn't the amount so much, (about $60 for two people), it's that the staff was slow & semi inept, the food mediocre, and the whole experience was less than stellar. Seating arrangements are too close and there is no such thing as personal space. I was here for its famous tiramisu and atmosphere. it is said to be the oldest cafe in Greenwich Village and also home to Original Cappuccino. It has a non-traditional breakfast menu. From a simple fruit cup to eggs over the unusual breakfast. We ordered Hot chocolate & Tiramisu. - to be honest, both were just okay. I have been to Italy, and I know what's Italian hot chocolate, so no - I did not find out that taste anywhere so far. It has a Renaissance Bench; Florence and You can actually sit in it. We came and sat down for table service but you can get cafeteria orders to go as well. This cute little shop reminds me of the cafe from "You've Got Mail". Maybe as a non-NYer, more shops are like this than not but this was my first experience in a NY cafe like this. The tables are crowded in and the look is nothing less than eclectic. This is by NYU and I think people usually come for doing homework and dates. The cafe does advertise a 45-minute table limit, but I felt the service was a tad slow so I wonder what happens during busy times. So if you're getting table service but want it quickly, let them know. If you're there to chill, do so but know if they're busy then you're on a limited table time. I got the iced cocoa and carrot cake. The iced cocoa wasn't what I expected; it tasted just like chocolate milk, not like cocoa. I know this sounds super weird as a picky point, but just like chocolate sauce and hot fudge don't have the same flavor, cocoa and chocolate milk also don't have the same flavor. BUT these did in my opinion. And I know this is personal preference, but the carrot cake wasn't as sweet as I like my desserts.
