We had their chilaquiles, tamale de birria, tlayuda, y cafe con leche. The server was so kind and we went on a Sunday (busy but slowed down in between). There was seating outside and inside! I loved their playlist/radio, music was poppppin - reminded me of my family.

This is a great neighborhood gem. I'd say the food is 4 star, but the atmosphere is warm, inviting & obviously filled with love. It feels like going to a small town and the favorite Madre has invited you to her dining table. I ordered two tamales. Definitely ask which ones are made with corn meal and which ones with banana leaves... it makes a big difference. I don't normally like chicken, but the corn/ chicken was wonderful. I also had a Mexican chocolate which was prepared at my table. Deliciousness and filled with love. Thank you to both ladies working while I visited. Warm appreciation, Sharine

10/10 so cute and authentic. Tastes like home cooking, and feels like ur inside a home too. Girlfriend picked this one out and loved it. Shoutout the squash blossom tostada, and the amazing drinks. Everything else was just as good too

I always kept hearing about Cafe de Olla but I never knew they actually had food here as well. To my surprise their tamales were gluten free and made with vegan masa (dough)! I got their Mexican mocha with oat milk and tamal de rajas. Their tamales are made with banana leaves and I'm not usually a big fan of them but I actually really liked theirs. I'm already planning my next visit so I can try other tamales they have as well as other food. Their Mexican mocha was delish, what can I say. It was spicy which just added to the flavor. Sadly when I went they didn't have warm cafe de Olla but hoping for next time they do! Service was fast and easy. The restaurant is really a hole in a wall which I think adds to its authenticity. Be prepared to look for parking because there isn't a nearby parking structure so you'll need to find parking on the street.

This is a great casual spot for weekend brunch or lunch. There are a couple of tables outside, which I recommend on a warm day. Of course, you have to try the café de olla namesake drink here. This was a delicious coffee drink, and I love that it comes in a colorful ceramic mug. I've tried a couple of the food items here, and my favorite has been the tlayuda, which is a traditional Oaxacan dish. If you haven't had it before, I'd say a tlayuda somewhat resembles a quesadilla except the tortilla is a lot thinner and crispier. The tamales here are also pretty tasty.

Cafe de Olla is a short walk away from Valencia where I normally meet up with friends. It's a lovely little location with two small tables outside, a long counter by the window, and a few tables inside. They have two menus, one for food and another for drinks. My friend and I ordered two Oaxacan chocolates and a tlayuda to split at the counter before being handed a stand to bring to our table. We chose a smaller table towards the back of the restaurant near the restroom and got to look at the art for sale on the walls. There was also a little bucket of crayons on the table for drawing. The woman who greeted us at the counter and brought us our food was incredibly gracious. She brought the chocolate out and frothed it at the table before pouring the chocolate out into these mugs that stayed perfectly warm to the hands and were decorated with smooth and bright colored glazes. The tlayuda was also really delicious. A great mix of crunchy textures like the toasted tortilla and cabbage alongside the richness of the beans and cheese. My friend and I spent an hour or two at the cafe chatting while sipping our chocolates. We self-bussed our table to the counter, but I think we were actually expected to leave it at the table since that's what other guests did. The ambience was very comfortable and relaxing, and knowing they were open late made me feel more comfortable savoring the hot chocolate. We both used the restroom before departing and it was well-stocked and clean.

Open in the late afternoon for pretty good coffee and very good late lunch. Super friendly service.

    GARIBALDI

I've come here twice since staying in the mission because they have some amazing coffee and the staff is the sweetest!! The garibaldi is not always available, but is the perfect accompaniment to an iced cafe de olla! The outside seating is also lovely :)

This is seriously one of my favorite quesadillas in the city. It tastes so fresh and surprisingly healthy, and it's not oily at all. I'd definitely recommend checking it out if you haven't been yet! The only thing to note is the food took a little longer to prepare, but it seems like everything is made fresh to order, so I didn't mind. Just plan for a short wait before your food comes out.

A colorful and festive cafe. Loved all the decorations, definitely felt homey. There's even some paper coloring materials on each table to draw. Staff were very friendly and gave some food recommendations. Everything tasted homemade and fresh. The tamales tasted incredible. Each dish came with a delicious salsa and side salad. Favorite was the vegan tamale, surprisingly had a lot of unique flavor to it. Just wish the portions were larger, so would order more next time. Want to come back next time to try their drinks!

This is such a cute cafe in the Mission. I came in for a Mexican mocha this morning, it was slow and quiet at the cafe which was really nice for a Sunday. The staff was super nice, the decor and interior is very cultural to the Mission and adds a very authentic vibe to the cafe. They have indoor and outdoor seating. While I only got a mocha, they also offer food here. Parking was also quite easy, since it's located off of the prime streets, you can easily find neighborhood parking.

Tlayuda is really different and good! It's like a quesadilla, but the home made tortilla is firm, and the base ingredients are refried black beans, cheese and shredded cabbage. I had it that way. ... with their amazing smoky salsa. (It comes with a cute wooden serving spoon!) I always enjoy new things! Next time will I be brave enough to try huitlacoche?

We came early, and I'm glad we did because the line started forming about 30 minutes before opening. By the time they opened, it was already around the corner. The place has an authentic Mexico feel, from the look of the restaurant to the smells coming from the kitchen. The staff were incredible, but one of my favorite parts was being able to watch the whole process right in front of me. It definitely build up my appetite. I ordered two tacos de asada, and honestly, two were more than enough. These tacos were big and packed with meat. They do things a little differently here they used pico de gallo instead of the usual onion and cilantro. I asked them to add the onion and cilantro anyway, and when they came out, I was impressed. The steak was tender, juicy, and had a flavor I honestly hadn't experienced in a taco before. It had this deep, savory, smoky taste that felt completely different from the tacos I'm used to getting in Chicago. The meat itself was so well seasoned that it could easily stand on its own. The freshness from the pico balanced the richness of the steak, while the salsa brought a nice kick that stayed with you after every bite. Simple, but so much flavor packed into each taco. I'm really glad I finally got the chance to try La Taqueria.

Went to La Taqueria for lunch during our San Francisco vacation. First of all, had to make a…read morelengthy line outside to order. They have a hostess with a podium just outside the door taking orders. We ordered and indicated that we wanted to eat in, in which case we continued to wait to be seated. They have someone in charge of seating people as well (much needed). This place is apparently a landmark. Old fashioned, fast paced, efficient, small, authentic, mostly delicious! Tried several of their tacos, the chicken quesadilla and a burrito. The burrito was delightful. Plenty of steak but still balanced and fresh. The steak tacos are also meaty and good. The meat is well seasoned and, being authentic, it is allowed to be the prominent ingredient. I would similarly describe the chicken and even the beef tongue tacos. What I loved the most, however, was the beef head taco. Immense and incredible flavor beefy flavor, not to mention that moat restaurants wouldn't dare having it on the menu. By far the best taco I've ever had. If I get the chance to visit La Taqueria again that's all I want to eat. Unfortunately there were also two items that I found to be disappointing. One was the quesadilla. Even though the chicken is good it was very greasy. The other was the pork taco. Didn't love the flavor and, again, a bit on the fatty side for me, which is not often my opinion on a pork dish. All in all, if you want to experience authentic tacos, go here. And... live a little! Order the beef head taco.
