My wife and I have been regular customers for 4 or 5 years now and, because the pastries are excellent; the bread, very good indeed, we've taken my wife's particularly discerning French parents there several times--the last few times at their request. You can't face a better test than that (believe me) ! I ordered a chocolate cake for my GFs Birthday for November 19th, and the staff was very helpful and communicative through the whole process. The end result was undoubtedly the best cake I ha e ever had. Quality was there as was the balance and flavor, and obviously the chef/baker here is very experienced and puts all her heart into the products she bakes. But it would seem off to see it as a negative that a business is busy ( I do think the staff could up things up a bit, maybe some b vitamin or espresso) There's much talk of the prices being high but so long as the product reflects the cost I think it's only fair. It's when low quality product is sold at unreasonably high prices that it's a problem, in my book, and unfortunately I think not everyone knows the difference. That's fine, there's something for everyone and Rayleys bakery isn't far away. These are some of the best sweets I've ever sampled. Never overly done, never too sweet. The quiche was dry & crumbly plus the spinach salad didn't have the stems removed.....bread pudding was terrible....don't yet know about the bran muffin. I was dreaming of a slice of chocolate cake. Getting excited to find out there is a restaurant in town with the name "cake". When walking in my excitement rose as i saw sitting behind the glass counter, two stunning and beautiful chocolate cakes. My dreams had come true. Until they informed me that the cakes where not able to be sliced and to enjoy the cake i would need to purchase the full cake and i could not purchase a single slice. I felt sincerely teased and let down that i could not purchase a slice. It was right in front of me! They informed me that the cakes could be sliced open in a few days and only if it doesn't sell do they allow the cakes to be sliced. I purchased a chocolate mousse and though it was tasty. The cakes here are not only yummy but beautiful. We have had a variety of items including quiche, all of which have been tasty. The cream puff swans are adorable and taste good. The pistachio cream puffs tasted marvelous. I've had a few different coffee cakes that were all dense and yummy with my tea in the morning. My husband and I had quiche with sausage and cheese in it that came with a side salad and we enjoyed it. The food is not only good but the place is adorable. It's like a Parisian cafe and the employees are very friendly. The prices are a bit high but the cakes are just so good that it's worth it. Highly recommend. read more

Not only the food is delicious and the staff nice, but they have also proved great in handling the total stranger's health emergency. My mother-in-law fainted in the current heat wave right at the door just coming in, and a lady from behind the counter jumped to help, called 911 for us, very professionally explained to them what was happening, and later helped us to handle the situation. I know about the food because she packed it for us so that we could have it in the hospital with us (originally, we planned to have it right there at the bakery but had to concentrate on mother-in-law well-being instead). They were of great help, extremely courteous and cool about the whole situation. read more

While the food is amazing, the same cannot be said for all of the staff. My wife and I were in CAKE yesterday and were waited upon by a very rude young lady. If we had not been asked to purchase specific deserts for a party, we would have walked out without purchasing anything. If any of my staff treated customers like that, they would be instantly fired. Ironically at the party, I mentioned what happened and multiple other people had had a similar encounter and would not go in if she was working. I went w my wife to Cake's pop up dinner thing. It's a really limited menu, I think two entrees, a salad, a lot of desserts. We got the cassoulet w duck confit. Both were good, but not really what I was dreaming of for dinner. The chicory salad wasn't good. Wayyyyyy too bitter. Every green was a bitter green. It had orange slices to offset the bitter, but it didn't match, neither did the creamy dressing. The desserts were freaking awesome! 3.5 stars on the desserts. We tried 4 different small plates and each one was truly a delight. My favorite was the vegan "cheesecake". I'm not vegan but holy crap! It could persuade me to change my evil ways. My wife's pick was the huckleberry cake, and our friend liked the chocolate earl grey thing.We also tried a pear tart. Definitely Cake is living up to its namesake.
