Mask required but the staff were wearing their masks as a chin strap. Wasn't offered a disposable mask like other places that require masks. Was shopping around with went in. I was literally the only customer in the store. The Lady at the counter suggested some items for sale that were behind me. I back tracked to go look at them. The owner came out all anal and aggravated like some kind of grand Karen. Saying how Dont I want to continue walking counter clockwise around to exit. I decided instantly not to spend my money there. I went back to look at a product that was pointed out to me by an employee to purchase it. The owner then decided that was the perfect time to rush me out . A couple of us shared the evening specials. First the steamed mussels. Wow! Server with a piece of French bread to soak up the delicious herbed broth. Love the ambiance and French music and decor. We had 2 cappuccinos and the ganache brownie. That brownie was delicious! The first one slid off the plate onto the floor and they replaced it for free. Amazing! We've been several times and love the variety (always something different in the case), creativity, flavors, and service. In addition to pastries, they serve specialty sandwiches, salads, and quiche. But calling them pastries doesn't do them justice. It's like stepping into a quaint, French cafe. The decor is somewhat like pâtisseries in Paris. A gruyère gougère was acceptable.The house expresso was acidic, with no coffee savour whatsoever. They sell "baguettes": long narrow breads with a soft exterior and doughy interior, not the crisp crust and chewy interior of an authentic French baguette. The overhead muzak was so loud it was difficult to even have a conversation, playing 60's and 70's "oldies". In a French/European establishment, it was bizarrely dissonant. Traditional chansons, café music, and classical would have been far more enjoyable- at a third of the volume. I would never consider this extremely overpriced place for coffee or a meal with friends or family. read more

After numerous attempts to dine there, I have found the shop SHUT during regular posted business hours, more often than not ! I once stood in line for 15 minutes waiting to place my order only to be told, once I reached the staff on duty that they had just closed and were no longer taking orders ! The atmosphere and decor were great! Little tarts and coffee looked great! However, when asked if the mocha was sweet or not the cashier said yes it is sweet. That was not the case. It was bitter and had no flavor, even when adding a couple sugar cubes. However the price was fair compared to Starbucks. read more

My husband and I went to have lunch today on a friends recommendation and found the cafe has been permanently closed. It looked like an adorable place and II am so very sad that another small business has been forced to close its door because of the restrictions put in place by our government. Met the owner one day who told us the opening date and were excited for here and anticipating great things - went in one afternoon - was busy at 3.10pm . All I wanted was a pastry to go and was informed they had been closed for 10 minutes - when I said it says open until 4.00 - I was told it's their soft opening and there's a sign that says closed - even tho people were going in and out the door to the street. We were looking for a special birthday cake for our small "safe pod" of four celebrating a birthday. My husband walked into CAKE and chose a Princess Cake, pistachio colored light green almond paste with a big pink edible flower on top, it looked spectacular! Usually these things don't taste nearly as good as they looked but that is not the case here, inside were two layers of delicious dense white cake and on top whipping cream and strawberries. It was without a doubt one of the best cakes I've ever tasted, and the kind of dessert you'd think you had to be in downtown San Francisco to find. This is a world class patisserie right on Mill Street in Grass Valley. This was not cheap, but it made our birthday dinner spectacular and in these dreary times that is worth every cent. We will return and plan to patronize CAKE in the hopes they can survive the Covid pandemic. I've traveled the world and know top quality when I see and taste it. Bravo!!! read more

Don't let the name deceive! Not only do they have amazing cakes - their savory dishes are just as sweet. A couple of weeks ago we picked up the best Black Forest cake I've ever had, and today we grabbed a summer squash sandwich with corn mascarpone that has such a unique, delicious flavor.
