I often forget that Cake exists. For one, as a carless non-driver, getting to Chestnut Hill is akin to a quick trip to Mars for me. When my late friend Dee was alive, this was a place she often wanted us to frequent. Dee was a vegetarian who thought onions and garlic did not agree with her. Whenever we went out to eat, as we were perusing the menu, she would lean over, point to an item and whisper, "Do you think this has onions or garlic in it?!" I cooked for Dee often enough to know that her gastric woes were brought on by eating too much too fast rather than ingesting alliums, so unless the menu offering said something obvious, like 'onion rings,' I would assure her she'd be fine ordering-and, of course, she always was. So why Cake? I am not a lover or even a liker of traditional American breakfast and brunch food. The protein in eggs does not agree with me, pancakes bore me, waffles are best if they're in potato form as fries and anything with gravy of any color on it makes me want to get up and run. I haven't gone back to Cake for the food after my first visit; I return for the atmosphere. It's heavenly. Cake is in an atrium that was once a greenhouse for florists in the Chestnut Hill area. It's very Victorian in appearance and reminds me of The Conservatory of Flowers in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park only on a much smaller scale. It's airy, charming, light filled and bright, decorated with palms and a large working fountain. The splash, gurgle and whoosh of the water is soothing and calming as one sits in the sun, waiting for sustenance and caffeine. While Cake is just off Chestnut Hill's main cobbled street, it feels light years away from the big metropolis it is so close to and decades removed from the 21st century. There is nothing on the menu I'd go out of my way to recommend. That doesn't mean the food is dreary or bad. It's simply very average food. Let it be known that I'd rather break my fast with a masala dosa or a plate of Vietnamese crispy garlic cat fish, so please take that into consideration as you read. Nothing to be found that's innovative or eye brow raising on the breakfast, brunch or lunch menus-scrambles, French toast, scones, frittata, quiche, a breakfast burrito, things with lox, salads, grilled cheese and a few types of burgers and standard sandwiches. Typical fare though fresh, prettily presented and portioned generously so you will not leave disgruntled or hungry. The service is efficient and friendly. I think the plants and the healing negative ions in the air from the fountain keep everyone-staff and diners-in fine spirits. I could be content and fulfilled any time, sitting in this atrium for hours, drinking pots of tea, picking at scones and having a long, delightfully hazy, uncontrolled mental zone. It's a restaurant, though, not a stay all day, faffing around online coffee shop and tables must be turned over in a timely fashion to make money, thus I have never worn out my welcome here. I have, however, frequently fantasized about getting "accidentally" locked in and spending the night under a palm, listening to the fountain, getting dozy and dreamy as I watched moonlight streaming in through the soaring atrium windows. Cake is also a bakery which makes custom cakes to order from 6 to 10 inches. Cake does not take reservations and there is often an hour wait on weekends so plan accordingly. The greenhouse environment and the art on the walls makes for a great brunch aesthetic I got the Sunday frittata and it came with breakfast potatoes and multigrain toast. Cake is the cutest little spot in Chestnut Hill. Located in an old greenhouse and attached to a florist/boutique shop. When you walk in to your left you have the bakery filled with pastry's, slices of bread, tarts and cupcakes. All range from $2.50 - $6 each. I took a fruit tart and chocolate tart to go, because DUH. The fruit tart was good. The perfect ratio of tar, filling, and fruit. The chocolate tart on the other hand was less than desirable. It's a chocolate crust with a pile high whipped chocolate topping. That's it. I thought it was filled with ganache or something, but it wasn't filled with nothing. Overall it was just an "ok"' dessert. I will not order it again though. For brunch we had the breakfast frittata (served with hash browns and your choice of toast) and brioche french toast (served with strawberries and syrup). My french toast was so filling and not too sweet. The fritatta was HUGE. I swear we packed about 2/3 of it home. The portions here are hefty. Service here is great as well. They offer free coffee refills and they don't pressure you to "eat and leave" to fill in the seats. Be warned: this place is popular. It opens at 10am on Sunday and I got there at 9:52am with a line out the door. My only complaint though would be to not sit parties who are not all present. What an incredibly cute spot in the quaint neighborhood of Chestnut Hill! I really wanted to order the French Toast but also a savory plate so our server suggested we order a half serving to share so that we can both have savory dishes too and it was the perfect amount!! The Honey-Peach Butter was so so good. I think they change the French Toast a bit each season so check their menu before you expect the same topping. As for savory, I got the Sunny Side Eggs that were topped on top of 2 toasted brioche with sautéed spinach and melted Swiss cheese... are you drooling yet... And my friend got the Breakfast Plate. We bought two tarts from the bakery to go and oooh they were so yummy. Not too sweet so it was a perfect pairing with some iced coffee We came for Saturday brunch at 11 and we actually didn't have to wait long at all to my surprise. 3.5 stars I think Cake's biggest draw is the atmosphere. It's in a cute little greenhouse-like building with palm trees and plants. Also, it's BYOB, which is always a bonus. Our waitress was friendly and checked up on us often. The food was ok. Not bad but not great. My breakfast burrito tasted pretty standard - a mix of refríes beans, chorizo, and scrambled eggs. It was also covered in a chili sauce that made it nearly impossible to eat! My friend's steak and eggs were well priced (just $14), but I was surprised to find that the meat was cold when I tried it. I have no idea why I haven't written a 10 star review of cake yet. This is our hands down number one go to place to bring out of town guests when we're looking for an awesome Sunday brunch. It's BYO, they have amazing staff, and there is a gift store that you can spend all of your dollars at during the wait (there is always a wait- go with it. It's a good sign and it's worth it). So cute. I used to live in Chestnut Hill area and always wanted to try this place. So after 2 years, I finally got to try this place for brunch! It was a Saturday and it was packed! What were we thinking coming at 12?! We put our name and number down and went over to Starbucks. We were at Starbucks for 30 mins waiting for our drinks so by the time we got our drink and started chatting, Cake called us letting us know our table was ready. When we got back, we got sat right away but couldn't help myself from the fly that was flying around. I think since it was part of a greenhouse, there was more flies than usual but who knows. We ordered our food and it came out pretty quickly and our server was friendly. My friend got the breakfast burrito and I got the Salmon with bagel. Everything was good and the portion was good for 12-13 dollar platters. Sadly I did not get to try their coffee since we had Starbucks but that just makes me wanna come back here soon! We ordered the cajun chicken wrap (very spicy!), breakfast burrito and croque monsieur. The burrito was filled with bean paste and eggs and came with guac, sour cream and pico de gallo. First off, this place is a gem! I loved the fact that the interior looks like it was previously a flower shop / green house. The green house look gives it a rustic ambiance repurposed with simple aesthetics. There is a non-functioning fountain in the middle that still makes it all look cool. Beautiful dining room attached to a nice shop at the other end. We were actually in the shop browsing when we hear loud noises coming from the back of the shop. We were surprised to find this restaurant back there. The entrance to the restaurant of course was not thru the shop as it does have another entrance from the street. The hamburger arrived and was perfectly cooked medium as requested served on a brioche bun with generous portion of melted blue cheese. The patty appears to be handmade and not those frozen kind. The cole slaw was actually disappointing. My wife ordered Croque-Monsieur with chip. Traditionally a Croque-Monsieur is boiled ham between slices of brioche-like pain de mie topped with grated cheese and slightly salted and peppered, which is baked in an oven or fried in a frying pan. This was not the case or even close. This was just a ham and cheese on a plain croissant. Very disappointing and the chip served in a small soup cup that appears to be homemade was nothing but stale chips. Although the service and atmosphere is nice and the food needed more attention. The wanna be French American affairs was not up to par. A good Monte-Cristo would have been better choice if made available. I notice a lot of people eating a breakfast burrito but being from Los Angeles, I eaten lots of good breakfast burritos so I had my doubts. Brunch! They have good options. Everything I've ever eaten here has been great. My overall favorite is the crab cakes and eggs. Hollandaise is on point and the cakes are not shy on the crab. I'd say the only thing that lacks is the service (sometimes). It's either been really friendly or kinda crabby (pun intended). Had a lovely Sunday morning with Cake today! My mother came to town, and we mozied over to Cake with some champagne for Mimosas around 10:30AM. All tables were full, but servers kindly offered to give us a ring when a table was open. We were anticipating about a half an hour wait and walked the Avenue. They called us within 10 minutes. We had the Brioche French toast (startlingly delicious), the Sunday Frittata, and the Breakfast Plate. Although we waited quite a bit for our dishes since the cafe was busy, they were all worth the wait. I've never had anything as good as the brioche toast with vanilla butter and fresh maple syrup.
