I was very anxious about returning to the dentist after a long time, but every single staff member made me feel welcome and at ease. From the moment I called and spoke with Maria to schedule my appointment, to the moment I left after my consultation, I felt genuinely cared for. I went in today for a routine dental cleaning, which I have done consistently twice a year for many years. While reclining in the dental chair, my blood pressure was checked for the first time. I was informed by Sammy, the dental technician?, that this is a new procedure as the practice continues to update its protocols. My blood pressure was taken twice using a CVS store-brand cuff placed over a thick sweater. During the first reading, my arm was positioned hanging down at my side with my arm bent on the dental bed. I was not asked to rest it at heart level, nor was I seated with my feet flat on the floor, as is standard practice in most medical settings. The second reading was taken in the same manner, again over my sweater and arm hanging down. I slightly adjusted my arm position myself during the second attempt. Both readings were elevated, and I was told that my dental cleaning could not proceed. And...that's ok. What I found concerning is that upon returning home, I checked my blood pressure using two different machines BEFORE taking my medication. I took my sweater off, sat upright, feet on floor, and arm by chest/heart level. While my readings were elevated, they were SIGNIFICANTLY lower than the measurements taken at the dental office. If blood pressure readings are being used to determine whether routine dental care can proceed, it is important that staff are properly trained in correct blood pressure measurement techniques. To clarify, I do have high blood pressure, and my physician and I manage it carefully. In addition, I had not yet taken my medication prior to the dental appointment. However, my at-home readings were nothing comparable to those taken at the dentist. Had my blood pressure truly been as high as indicated at the dentist, I would have sought immediate emergency care, especially given that I am pregnant and aware of the seriousness such readings would pose. I am grateful that I rechecked my blood pressure at home for peace of mind. I even called my doctor, went in to the doctor's office, showed my doctor the sweater, explained how it was done...and my doctor said it was done incorrectly! *For transparency, a prior positive post about this practice was made after being offered a discount for doing so. At this point, I believe it may be time to seek care elsewhere. read more

I have been a patient with Cal Dental Group for a few years now. Customer service is great, and they make sure that you get the services that you need. I have even brought my mom here and they know how to give her the best care. I like that they address me as soon as I walk in. They offer bottled water, and they always have a smile waiting for me. The only caveat I had with Cal Dental Group were a couple things: 1.) A one-time uneasy experience with a dental assistant's comment about my pain. But that was addressed by Alec, whom I appreciate. 2.) Another caveat was that I was told that I would be partially reimbursed for a distal wedge procedure I paid up front for in advance, since I was told that my insurance would cover a portion. However, it turns out that after speaking to the insurance company, they said that they will not pay for the procedure. I came in since I started experiencing pain in the tooth that required a root canal. I called the office. I was told to come in, only to be told again that I needed a root canal, which I already knew. I felt frustrated that I was asked to come in just to hear something I was already aware of, especially when I was in pain and expecting a solution. Alec, who was pleasant at the first appointment, seemed annoyed this time. He questioned why I hadn't yet done the root canal despite being in pain. I explained that I was told the root canal couldn't be scheduled until the cleanings were completed. I was told from the start that cleanings needed to be done before any other dental work could proceed. I followed this guidance and had completed visits 1 and 2, with visit 3 already scheduled and the root canal listed as visit 4 on the treatment plan. It felt like I was being blamed for simply following the instructions I was given. After I explained, he did apologize but by then, the damage was done. When discussing crown options, he only offered options not covered by my insurance, and dismissed the ones that were, saying, "We don't offer Chinese crowns that will fail in 5 years." That comment felt unprofessional and culturally insensitive, and it confirmed for me that I would not be returning. This experience left me feeling confused, dismissed, and pressured. I had tried to follow the process responsibly, and I expected compassion and clarity not judgment or condescension. This is the best dentist I've ever been to! Everyone here is incredibly helpful and friendly, from the receptionist to the dental assistants to the dentists. Everyone is exceptional! I've come here over the last year for my two cleanings and to have some fillings done. They're always so thorough and explain everything so well. I never leave questioning if I really need something done as I have with other dentists I've been to. I moved a little further away and tried getting a new dentist, but the new one was terrible, so I decided to drive a bit further to stay a patient here. Dr. Karnakova is wonderful. Terrible care and service. Not only did they perform a bait and switch for cost of procedures but they also didn't provide any gauze post op. They will numb you first before presenting you with the bill and forcing you to pay upfront in the middle of your operation. Will be looking to see if this is considered malpractice but regardless this is extremely unprofessional and misleading. Sales like pressure from both the doctors and office workers. Doctor was adamant on doing bone grafting which is optional and not necessary I found out later, but the doctor would not proceed without it. Bone grafting is not covered by dental insurance. This is not the place for you if you only have MediCal. I called to see if they take that kind of insurance and they said yes. Then when I went to my first visit they said medi-cal wouldn't even cover my cavity fillings because they add a liner under the filler, a practice apparently other dentists don't do. I only had X-rays done so I can't say anything as to the quality of the actual treatments. It waited 2 hours and a half just for them to tell me my insurance covered nothing and it would cost $4,700 out of pocket to get any work done. I obviously will not be returning to this place because they wouldn't even do my cavity fillings with my insurance (which are normally covered at other dentists). read more

On Monday November 17, 2025 I wrote this Review (for which I am EDITING): On Friday November 14, 2025 I had a tooth extracted at Cal Dental. While I was waiting for Anna at the front desk to Clarify some details to me about my visit, Alec the office Associate came AT me Disrespectfully, Impatient, Rudely, Badgering me to "leave" that area and go into the lobby!!!! I was informed by Anna that the dentist was prescribing a Antibiotic due to the condition of my gum. I informed Ana that I would NOT be able to get the Antibiotic until Monday as my Pharmacy is only open Mon. thru Friday until 5:30 pm. I have NO way of picking up the prescription and that I would Not be getting it until Monday. Alec then telling me I could take a bus or Uber or ACCESS to get the prescription!!!! He was doing this Badgering in front of another patient!! First of all I was still dealing with the INCREDIBLE PAIN I WAS IN. SECOND I WAS IN SHOCK at the ABUSIVE, DISRESPECTABLE, IMPATIENT manner he was speaking to me!!! I AM ABSOLTELY LIVID THAT ALEC FELT THAT HE HAD THE RIGHT TO SPEAK TO ME THAT WAY!!!! After I had a couple of days to calm down I decided to look at any Posts about Cal Dental and saw some reviews that Specifically Addressed His Behavior along with their tendency to try and get you to have a LOT OF UNNECESSARY TREATMENTS AND MANIPULATE YOU INTO GETTING A DENTAL CREDIT LINE/CARD. While I am going to get the rest of my dental treatment completed by them. I WOULD NOT ONLY NOT RECOMMEND THEM, I WOULD WARN ANYONE WHO HAS CONSIDERED GOING TO THEM!!! If they decide Not to finish the treatment that I Have agreed to, they Will be held accountable for my Distress!!! Amendment: Since then I have been back to their office to get the SUPPOSEDLY ABSORBABLE Surgical Sutures that were Dangling from the tooth they extracted and Graphed cut. Once again on Thursday November 20, 2025 more of the Supposedly "Absorbable" sutures were hanging out of that tooth extraction area, which I decided NOT to go back and have them cut it out. Due to the Trauma I experienced on November 14, 2025 and the letter I received when I got the dangling pieces out of my cut. Where they wrote ...Cal Dental Group will not be continuing treatment going forward."... SINCE IT IS APPARENT TO ME THAT THEY KNEW THAT I WOULD BE GIVEN/NEEDED A PRESCRIPTION FOR THE EXTRACTION, HAD THEY LET ME KNOW IN ADVANCE I WOULD HAVE HAD THEM CONTACT MY PHARMACY SO THAT I WOULD HAVE HAD THE PRESCRIPTION AND WOULD HAVE NEVER HAD THE INTRUSIVE CONVERSATION WITH Alec in the FIRST PLACE!! I had NO ill experiences from the Actual Dental treatments, including deep cleaning. My ISSUE is with their perception of how they communicated to me. Specifically Gas lighting MY EXPERIENCE (even though when I spoke to Ana about my displeasure on how Alec Spoke to me, she responded by telling me he "was stressed") and that they tried to get me to A. Get treatments I felt were Not necessary And to B. get me to get a Credit card/Line of credit to pay for the treatment that was Not covered by my insurance. That said I will NOT let anyone treat me in the Abrasive manner that Alec treated me on that day and I have made a Full Report to my Insurance company! Horrible billing practices! Many red flags and crazy fees to be paid upfront before service. Wait for your actual appointment, then it's only a consultation with a $75 fee. Wait several weeks later for the actual cleaning date, then they make you pay $369 up front when you have insurance that should cover all or most of the cost. They lied to my insurance company by stating they didn't bill correctly because the birthdate was wrong. Then later they got reimbursed from insurance but I'm still out of cash from the cleaning cost. How about this??? Contact the person and ask them! No one should ever have to pay that much up front or even a consultation fee to be seen!!!! Get another dentist like I did. I picked this location for my oldest daughter because it was close to her place, should have stayed with our local dentist instead. My other daughter had the exact work done at our other dentist and only paid $75 out of pocket for the deeper cleaning. High class place, zero red flags. Now in the grievance stage. read more
