Super friendly service. Ambiance inside is casual and easy. There's also seating out back and on the South side with picnic tables and umbrellas, some shade, some sun, very comfortable. Food quality and portions are phenomenal! We had the Mexican-Q platter. It includes sausage which was mild and delicious, creamy and densely packed where the casing pops when you bite it. Excellent. It also included smoked brisket which had delicious bark, a nice smoke ring, smokey but not overpowering flavor, a little dry in spots but the custom ai-jus with light cinnamon and other flavors was incredible and made it some of the best I've ever had. The elote was creamy, smokey, soft but with crunchy smoked corn, fantastic. The Julio's Mac N Cheese is think, rich, creamy and delicious! The Mexican twinkies are brisket and cheese stuffed peppers, wrapped in bacon. They were my last favorite of all the foods on the platter, but we're still really good! The pulled pork looks like it would be plain or even a bit dry, but it's not, it actually needs nothing, and I'm a HUGE sauce guy who would definitely use it, but it's so good, mellow smoke, perfect temp that it needs nothing! Okay, maybe a side of slaw :-) Last, but not least, the brisket tostada, wow! A huge pile of brisket, covered with super fresh and fully drained pico de gallo and cotija cheese and a zigzag of red sauce - all on a homemade crispy, light, flakey, crunchy, thin deep fried corn tortilla that reminded me of those perfect tortilla bowls used for taco salads. The entire thing was magic! Everything is super high quality and homemade. Amazing Mexican food paired with some of the best bbq in Arizona. Bbq is cooked by Mike, a true pit master, over pure local mesquite, smoked in some of the nicest, best constructed, highest quality bbq pits I've ever seen. My husband and i finally made it to Mexi Q today for lunch. Oh my gosh the food is FANTASTIC! I got the brisket burrito and my husband got a birria taco and brisket tostada. Service was great! I was skeptical about Caldwell at first. I'm not familiar with Mexican BBQ. I love BBQ, I love Mexican but wasn't sure about fusing them. However, it exceeded my expectations! I was a little shocked when going in to order food. I saw the cashier with gloves on and he was typing in the order and then opening the fridge or oven with the same gloves and getting my meat out and using the same gloves to separate the meat. He also grabbed a tray with those same gloves. I told him I was shocked by this and that is called cross contamination. He went on to tell me that it is ok and that he had saran wrap on where he types in the food orders and other excuses. After I waited for my food, I noticed he still never changed his gloves for other customers. I will say the food is so delicious, but they need two people. They need one to type in the order and another to grab the food and shred it. I have gone many times to the other Caldwell's and they have one person who gets the meat out and another to put the order in so you can pay for it. I realize this is a small place. We happen to be driving through Gilbert and saw this place. We were all intrigued about the idea of Mexican barbecue. It was great! The interior is small and has limited seating, but there is plenty of seating outside. They do have misters for the heat, but I imagine this place will be really nice in the winter time. The staff is very friendly and helpful. They were quick and efficient. You order your food, and by the time you get to the end of the counter to pay, it is ready to go. Lots of people coming through, and they took care of them quickly and efficiently. I had the brisket sandwich, which was loaded with tender meat. Their house barbecue sauce and the hot and spicy barbecue sauce, were our two favorites. The others had pulled pork, which they thoroughly enjoyed. The elote was warm and delicious. First let me say I am a fan of Caldwell's BBQ It is some of the best around town.However I can't say the same about their venture into the Mexican arena. We had the Brisket Birria Taco and the carnitas taco. And a brisket tostada. All were good but mediocre at best. I would say the brisket meat was good but not as fresh as the main Caldwells location. The tostada was more of a joke at $8 each. Was a precooked hard tortilla with some mashed beans spread thin and without the house sauces would be subpar. The birria was a over done taco shell fried with the meat inside. Came out greasy and all alone. Let me close by saying want BBQ go to Caldwells main location. For Mexican I would say leave the Mexican to the Mexicans Inside was cramped and obviously made for carry out. read more

We ordered Birria taco, chili verde taco, Birria taco, brisket taco, elote cup, Mexi Q twinkies. I like the concept, the place is cute, food was super salty, every neat we tried was drenched in salt. I like food on the saltier side but this was excessive. The elote did not taste like fresh corn. It tasted like frozen or canned corn. I feel like the tacos should be on a double wrapped corn tortilla especially the juicier meats. The flour tortillas gets soggy and turns back into dough. It's a hot dog place. They're good hot dogs (all beef) and they have a wide variety of toppings you can add... most are free, but some, like brisket and chili have an added cost. Yes, you can top your dog with smoked brisket from Caldwell County BBQ... The dogs are grilled in Big Green Eggs. Of that means something to you, there you go. If not... no worries. Just some trivia from me to you. I got mine with sauerkraut and mustard. To go, the mustard (and BBQ sauce) are "do it yourself." I like pickled cabbage. Sorry. I think the dog had good flavor and the sauerkraut was ... probably from a jar or can. But it was a free topping, so, what are you going to do? It was crunchy and not soggy. I enjoyed my dog. My wife and one son had chili and cheese dogs and the other son did brisket with BBQ sauce. He said the brisket was great and the hot dog was OK. The other two liked the chili, but my wife thought it was a little pricey when compared to the price of the brisket topping. I had the brisket taco and it was excellent. What I didn't care for were the sides. The elote wasn't what I was expecting, this was an overly spiced, for my taste , version. The calabacitas, same. Overly spiced, some flavors I didn't recognize, and I've had a lot of different calabacitas. The mexi q Twinkie....wayyy too hot for my old taste buds. This gem offers bar-b-que as good as it gets and there are creative Mexican food options. We had delicious sandwiches and the meat was juicy, smoky and tender. My friend and I stopped in today (Sunday, 11/13/2022 at 4:50pm) for a order in take out. I ordered the brisket, a barrio taco, jalapeño Twinkie, Coca Cola and two sides (Mac n cheese and elote). My friend got the barrio tacos and a cookie. I order the barrio tacos but was not given them so I did pay for them and called the store about twenty minutes later when we arrived at my friends house in mesa / 202. They said they would refund the taco so I'll let you know if they do. At the register, my Coke wasn't in the bag and had I not asked for it they would've not given it to me. My biggest suggestion is to 100% check your order before you leave the store because they are not totally focused on it. My friend mentioned the same thing about getting her cookie. I was pumped about the barrio taco lol she did say they were delicious. The food was pretty good. The elote was alright. It was a little too much liquid and not enough solids though the taste was there. The Mac n cheese was tasty. The brisket was good, a littleeee dry in spots but definitely tasty with the sauces. The jalapeño Twinkie was bomb. Expensive dinner and I tipped well so almost $50. Overall, I would go back but I would make sure all my purchases are in the bag.
