I had heard a lot of hype about the place so I had to try it. Host was nice and gave us an accurate wait time for a saturday night which was 45 min. Luckily, we love the cocktails at Manhattan Inn across the way, so it really was no big deal. Table was ready when we came back. Vibe of the place was good as it was busy. After a long day in Brooklyn, my friends and I were craving some Mexican food. Our neighbor recommended Calexico to us and we thought we would give it a try. We walked in to a packed room, however, we got seated almost immediately. I ordered three tacos: Grilled Shrimp, Fried Chicken, and Carne Asada. I really enjoyed the Fried Chicken taco the most, the Grilled Shrimp taco alright, and the Carne Asada was just plain dry. I also ordered a side of Chile-Cilantro Fries (highly recommend, bomb af) for the table. Happy Hour is wonderful here. 2-for-1 of the draft beers and margaritas. The draft beers are $6 so you get two for $6. Margaritas run for $10 (give or take $1). The food menu is great also. Feel free to have an appetizer but the main portions are super filling so you might not even need it. Quesadillas are excellent. The lighting in the place is dim. This is usually my go to for Mexican in the Greenpoint area - and Friday was no different. Calexico has good food, great happy hour prices, and a cozy ambiance. My roommates and I decided to meet for dinner and we were met with a long wait. When we were waiting for a table we tried to sit down and one of the hostess's friends RUDELY scolded us for trying to take "her" seat so we decided to move along and grab drinks at the bar. When we went to the large opening at the bar we were scolded a second time by no other than the hostess's friends for blocking their bar space. We were shocked by the whole interaction of this as they were not only disrespectful but particularly because they knew the staff members. I would still recommend this restaurant if you are in the area but please note they will not seat you unless your whole party is there - and the crowd is clearly not so friendly! read more

I used to go to their LES location but it was sad when they moved so I took an opportunity to check out their Greenpoint location when I was in the neighborhood. I ordered a carnitas pork burrito, a carne asada burrito bowl and some elotes. I really enjoyed the carne asada steak dish. The steak is so flavorful and juicy and tender not like other places where the steak is tough and overcooked. I liked the size of my dish as well as the impressive super stuffed carnitas burrito which was definitely like a pound and a half of food wrapped up in a tortilla. It came with rice, beans, salad, cheese and a good amount of meat. I also ordered the elotes and although I liked the flavors of the cheese and pepper toppings (was even surprised they had it on the menu) it was on the small side and the ear of corn was not sweet enough and was not that big especially for $6 each and each order was one piece of corn cut in half and the top part of the corn didnt have a lot of kernels. But it may also be because corn is not in season in the winter when I went. Not bad if they get better produce. I still prefer the red hook elote over this one. But definitely would hit up calexico again since service was great all the waitresses were super friendly and for some reason a lot of other stores were closed on a sunday night after 7 but they were still open so that was a definite plus. And because they have those cholula hot sauce packets that I like. They also have a nice bar area. I hope they stick around so I can go back. read more

I've frequented Calexico countless times since they've opened. Never have I had an issue until today. I called prior to place a pickup order. I reconfirmed that it would take about 20 minutes and Keria agreed. After driving there (20 mins), i arrived and wasn't greeted by the tall, young woman who was at the door. Not sure if she was a hostess. I proceeded to walk up to the counter to pick up my order. There was a guy on the phone who looked confused. He didn't acknowledge me either. He could've been new, but a smile would've sufficed. After about ten minutes, two ppl came over to see why he was confused and they didn't bother to look my way. Eventually, he asked how he could help me and i told him i was picking up my order. He looked perplexed and i was already annoyed. I pointed to the bag behind him and he said, "oh" as if he was surprised. He didn't bother to confirm the order before handing me the bag. He didn't seem to know how to look up the order in the system to charge me either. Maybe it was his first day, but he had no clue of what he was doing. Then i presume his manager came over and he couldn't find the order either. After a few minutes, it finally popped up, but i had to tell them what i ordered first. Upon leaving, i wasn't acknowledged but the tall woman again and i looked right at her. Maybe it was an off night, but the whole experience could've been turned around had someone at least smiled or said hello. Unbelievable and unacceptable! read more

This review is for vegetarian and vegan people. Calexico does have multiple options for vegetarians and vegans (mostly vegetarian options as almost all of them have dairy but I believe you can request no dairy). We tried the jalapeno peppers (which were my fave, ultra creamy and spicy at the same time) and the nachos which were also good and used very thick chips. As everyone at the table was vegetarian we tried almost everything vegetarian friendly on the menu. The two veggie tacos were the "veggie" option with mushrooms and favas beans which was unique and interesting while the bean option was fine but nothing too different from what most vegetarians get at Mexican restaurants. The mushroom quesadilla was tasty but needed a bit of hot sauce. We tried the bean bowl and burrito which I was told was fine but nothing to stand out from most other Mexican places. The real stand out was the vegetarian enchiladas the sauce and veggies they used were awesome. Overall a good spot for vegetarians, I would recommend the jalapeno poppers and vegetarian enchildas the most. Would have been nice if the burrito and taco options were a hit more unique for vegetarians and if vegan options were clearly labeled. read more

This could have been a four star review, but that would require overlooking too many things that went wrong during the course of our courses. I should start, to provide context, that we have walked by this restaurant multiple times and have been looking forward to trying it. The dimly lit, festively decorated atmosphere (with exposed brick, on purpose) was nice but overshadowed by the sheer volume of the Saturday night crowd. It also would have been nice if the air conditioner positioned above our table did not drip water onto the same table that shares our food. First we ordered drinks - two different frozen margaritas. However, we were told that the blender was broken (on this being the first hot day of the year) and so changed our order to on the rocks. In the process of communicating all of this, our waiter neglected to bring one, and remedied this by bringing a second glass of the same margarita already served. Not only was this not what we had ordered, but the quality of the margarita itself was lacking. We then ordered tacos and guacamole, which were delicious. We ordered two each, the Baja fish, black bean, chipotle pork, and fried chicken, all of which I would recommend. The guacamole was tasty, tangy but not spicy. This alone would have warranted a four star review if I did not have to snatch them back from a server who either couldn't hear my protests (likely) or was just a heartless guac-stealing psychopath (hardly likely). It was also more difficult than it should be to flag someone down to re-do the drink order, get extra napkins, the check, etc. This would be a four star review easily, if it weren't for various mistakes and mediocre service. read more

There are so many Mexican options in the area, that I always wondered whether or not to give Calexico a shot. With it being National Tequila Day yesterday, it was time! The margaritas were pretty good. They had many options and were pretty generous with the tequila. Even though I had just eaten dinner, as the hours wore on, I got a little hungry. I ordered the black bean taco and the elote. The taco is a pretty big size, however I think $5 for a flour tortilla with beans, lettuce, and a slice of avocado, is a bit much. I see it more as a $3.50 sort of item. I also got the elote which was okay. I definitely seem to have more of a preference to crumbly cheese on top than liquid cheese. They didn't really knock my socks of with the food, so I don't think I'd necessarily come back for that. read more

I stopped by on a Saturday afternoon. The place was moderately busy. I got a veggie enchilada plate. The enchiladas were decent, as were the beans. The rice was horrible. Crunchy, hard and stale. It had the consistency of day old rice. A couple other minor things bothered me. There are no chips or salsa. That's an appetizer you buy. Also unlike real Mexican restaurants in California there were no tortillas served with the meal. I understand there is significant overhead in running a restaurant in a hip area like Greenpoint. Maybe supply chips, tortillas and salsa instead of cute greeters? If you are going to call yourself 'calexico' people will assume a minimum of adherence to such norms of Cali-TexMex cuisine. I frequented Calexico on the Upper East Side and was sad I would have to give it up. Little did I know I was moving near another location! Their food is consistently good. I am a vegan and my go-to is the bean burrito no dairy with a side of sales and chips. Despite the modifications they always go above and beyond to get my order correct. I personally order directly through their app, and their customer service is always phenomenal. I can't say enough good things about Calexico! Best Mexican, hands down. read more

The drinks and happy hour specials are on point and the tacos are absolutely to die for (Chipotle Pork being highly recommended). Beware of the nachos, however. They're a perfect blend of every Mexican-style flavor you could ask for, but the portions are colossal and you will not finish your main courses. I feel that I say this often, but Calexico is another great place to come with 3 or 4 friends, line up at the bar and shoot the shit for a few hours. This visit was my first trying the wings. Of course, thoughts and fantasies as to how they will taste encircled my mind throughout the day. You get about 8 or 9 wings for $12 along with blue cheese and a miniature cauldron-like bowl of extremely spicy, pickled jalapenos and other assorted vegetables. Be careful, they're HOT. The house chipotle sauce is lovely and tossed perfectly; a nice mild to medium kick with a Mexican twist that differentiates their dish from your standard buffalo sauced wings. The wings themselves are generously meaty and give you plenty to bite into with a flavor that carries through. The cook on the meat itself was fine but the skin on the outside was where I could have desired more "crisp" or texture. Of course, call it personal preference but I would say these wings need to be ordered "well-done" next time. I am incredibly bummed to say that my visit to Calexico was a disappointment. You walk in, and the place has a cool ambience (way better than Taco Chulo, my old go-to for mildly inauthentic, yet tasty Mexican), super friendly staff and a nice variety to its menu. The cocktails are tasty and the food really solid. I spent 30 dollars (incl. tip) on a split appetizer, one of the fancier cocktails, two tacos and half a dessert - not cheap, but also not horrible. So I felt good about finally checking out this place...until the next day. At first I thought the mild food poisoning was because of something I ate before I went to Calexico. Until I spoke to the friend who had dinner with me there, who was having the same symptoms. And reading other reviews, we're not the only ones. We had the stuffed plantains, bean taco (not even meat/chicken) and the churros. And we felt awful all day. Dear people of Calexico, please change whatever it is that's making people sick. I would love to come back, but not at the expense of my stomach. read more

I have only had official food poisoning once and I was 13 years old. I've made it that many years more and then some without having to experience it again. I thought at first I had the flu. ugh, i can't eat at Calexico anymore. the crap part about it....the food was decent most of the time. I thought I had found "the one", but it turned around to bite me. I got really sick exactly six hours after eating the fish tacos near closing time one Sunday night. The next day I let the management know, and much to my surprise they accused me of reading similar posts about food poisoning on yelp and i was assuming the sickness was from their food. I hadn't had anything since noon that day...it was pretty clear where the illness came from. I had to take three entire days off work, and finally felt better after the fourth day. I don't know if they wanted me to come and show them how sick I was, or bring in a doctor's note, but their attitude was pretty horrible and uncalled for.
