They have the typical lunch specials that you would see at a Thai restaurant with salad and choice of two items. When we came back for dinner, we had pad see ew and spring rolls and Tom yum soup. Everything we tried was good and flavorful. The waiter was friendly and the food came out pretty quick. It wasn't busy both times we went. I had the exact same dishes that I reviewed 8 years ago and they were exactly the same (super delicious and just the right spicy). The only minor change was that it was $17 before tax and tip (we didn't get tea) rather than after, but that's a modest increase considering the rate of inflation. read more

I'd never seen at a restaurant offering duck with pad keemao, so I had to order that. Great flavor, even though the meat texture was not fork-tender to cut. I'd get mild next time instead of medium spicy. I had to order a Sing Ha to help cut the spice intensity. I had ordered a ginger tea earlier--it was delicious but also the spice a bit intense for me. My companion ordered the yellow curry with chicken. This sauce was absolutely delicious, although a bit thin. He ordered a Pinot Grigio wine. Very personable service and attention--he's been working with this restaurant for 25 years. From across the room, he noticed as soon as we were ready to order, another time when I needed a beverage refill, and when we were ready for the check. Plenty of seating, as there's an active ordered business for pick-up vs. dine-in when we were there for dinner. The pretty color scheme is burgundy red, gold, and black. Their spirit house is the largest I've ever seen; the tall ceiling and open architecture of the restaurant easily accommodate it. This place has moved from Northgate Mall to Northgate 1. It's been around for a loooong time. I've mostly had delivery from here but have gone a couple of times to pick up. The place is roomy and has all the Thai style decorations. Service was great. Friendly. The food is delicious! I've enjoyed everything I've gotten from here. I got my food to go. I got the combo $14 pad Thai and mango salad. I was told the salad that comes with the combo meal is only if you dine in. Not sure why that is but definitely is noted and reflected in my 4 star overall review. I got a $4 coconut juice, delicious! Absolutely would get this again. Very small amount of juice with a lot of ice and five pieces of coconut topped with a ranch flower made for the straw's paper! Impressive flower! See my photos! Even with the small quantity, still five stars as the price was cheap enough you could grab two. Pad Thai was delicious and served with jasmine rice done to perfection. Loved the Blair of the pad Thai. Generous portions on both the jasmine rice and the pad Thai. I was so looking forward to the mango sticky rice that I skipped my mango salad all together. Didn't want to chance not having room for this scrumptious dessert! The mango sticky rice did not disappoint! Absolutely delicious! Big enough portions to share but I didn't do that! Looked like a while mango was used and they did not skimp on the coconut milf either! 10 out of five stars for this! If I could add another half star I would! Wow! We got into town today to visit family and went looking for a good Thai restaurant to get takeout. Was I lucky to find Calgang Thai Eatery! It was super close and the food was delicious! We had Tom Kha soup, Tom Yum soup, Drunken Noodles and Red Curry. All very yummy. I should have taken pictures but we all ate so fast I didn't get a chance!! Salad has a dressing that's very mustard forward so it was a hard pass for me. Pad Thai is overly sweet 3/5 Red chicken curry was good 4/5, although I found it to be super sweet and heavy on the coconut milk Potstickers were awesome! 5/5 I liked it better than the actual food Service was good, interior was nice and clean, and we were able to get there, eat, pay, and go back to work within the lunch hour without rushing so that was nice. Nice place for a casual Thai lunch, grab and go from the buffet counter. Currently around $13 for 2 choice and rice. Ordered the massaman beef which had some carrots and potatoes, as well as pad Thai and jasmine rice. Can also get some sauce poured on the rice if you'd like. I ordered all my food from the appetizer menu, and I enjoyed each of three items. First, one of my favorites, Tod Mun, was delicious, and hot, and came with the perfect cucumber salad/sauce. I really loved them. I also enjoyed the Fried Tofu very much, and liked the Chicken Egg Rolls... though they did not taste particularly "Thai". Finally, the best of all...dessert. They have Mango and Sticky Rice... heavenly! I had to order a second portion, just to take home. That portion accompanies this missive! This is more like a Thai "deli". The lightning is bright, the tables and chairs are utilitarian, the service is brisk, yet friendly, and there is a broad band of choices. Nothing fancy, just good food. Just went to Calgang Thai Eatery last night with friends for dinner. It was excellent and I'm scratching my head why some are being so critical of this small business just trying to make it. For us the food was super fresh starting with the chicken satay (two orders) with their side sauce. Also yellow curry with beef was very tasty and while the sauce while thin it was excellent. I'm not sure what's happened but the quality of the ingredients and the overall flavors (buffet items) have gotten worse. The chicken used to be tender and chunky but now it is thinly sliced and has a consistency and taste that makes me think it was frozen prior to cooking. The curries have gotten a little watery. The eggplant was so delicious with a black bean or oyster sauce flavor but now it's inconsistent; sometimes it's okay and other times it's very oily and bland. Located in the Northgate Plaza, Calgang is one of the few Thai places available in San Rafael. With plenty of other food options, what makes Calgang worth visiting? The several times I have come the food has been quite delicious. I tried the Tiew Gang which had a creamy rich sauce that drenched the egg noodles. While not special, it fulfilled my Thai food craving. Another great option that is available for lunch goers is the combination plate where you get two entrees with a side of rice for $10.75. It appears that this combination used to be only available to those who dined in, but with COVID, the offer is available for to-go orders. With a good number of entrees to choose from, it is a good way to get a taste of the food options at a reasonable price. The service has been timely. Parking is readily available. My options were Calgang, the Poke place (which is takeout only), Round Table or Sonoma Taco shop. As others mentioned, the sauce was watery, but the potatoes were cooked well. I really enjoyed the flavors which were a change to the typical flavors I've had at Thai restaurants (curries, peanut sauces, basil). I'm not sure what happened at this restaurant, but after many years as a happy customer, the quality has gone so downhill that we will never order again. * Pad pik khing - Meat was the texture of soggy foam packing peanuts and truly inedible. Flavor of the entire dish was awful. * Pad Seiew - Noodles were plentiful, but overcooked so they arrived as a block, somehow with a watery substace spilling from the box (this dish does not have a wet sauce). * Pad Himmapan - Again, just bad. Creepy meat, very different veggies than preciously included, and essentially no sauce. This used to be our favorite dish at Calgang, but we had to throw it in the trash. * Red Curry - Completely watery and mostly flavorless sauce, shredded chicken thigh meat in place of the breast meat Calgang usually uses in this dish. Far more like a thin soup than a proper curry. I'm the kind of person who loves leftovers, but this meal (with purposefully purchased excess for workday leftover lunches) left us hungry since we simply couldn't stomach it, and only served to give me experience of throwing $100 worth of food into the trash. read more

I met a friend here for dinner. I'm not a fan of Thai food due to a severe allergy to seafood, and often their sauces have been prepared with shellfish. With that started, this place was pretty good. We ordered vegetable spring rolls, and the sauce that came with it was beautifully flavored. I had the combo plate of ginger chicken, mixed vegetables and some ginger tea. It was colorful and delicious. My friend had curry chicken. I love ginger, and had to ask for a second bag for the tea as it wasn't strong enough. our first time here and we loved it from the spacious well decorated interior to the delicious food and generous portions! our server was Nui whom we later found out is also the owner. Nui was very helpful, especially when he brought us 2 types of hot sauce. he told me the powdered hot sauce goes very well with my perfectly cooked pad thai with pork order (a lot of tender pork slices in my pad thai). we also ordered the mouth watering Penang curry duck that came with rice and veggies. omg, the sauce it's cooked in is absolutely a flavor explosion and leaves u wanting more! thank u very much Nui for a wonderful lunch experience for my husband and me! we look forward to trying more dishes here next time for sure! read more

It's a good place to get Thai in Marin. Take out in the back is the best feature. The price is right. Sticky rice sometimes runs out. Most times the staff is friendly. Other time not so much which is sad. We keep coming back but not change. Ordering in seems good food is hot and delicious. But if you order take out we seem to have been shorted on portion! In ordered a grilled pork with sticky rice and a salad and the portion of pork was less than an ounce. I bought two center cut bone in chops for $2.77 and for more food than dinner for $12.50. Was at the Farmers Market today and decided to get some Thai food. Calgang Thai was the closest to the market so that was my choice, waitress was friendly, and delivered my order promptly. It was down hill from there, pot stickers were so over fried they were hard to bite, ginger chicken was tasteless and super tough to chew at about 3bites and asked for my check. We have been long time customers of Calgang, although only ordered for delivery since the beginning of the pandemic. The past few orders have been very subpar particularly the spring rolls which used to be SO good and are now flavorless except for needing to change the oil in the fryer. We ordered pot stickers for a change of pace which also had the stale oil flavor. Very thin skins and seemed to be deep fried rather than true pot stickers. If the oil had been fresh, would have been tasty. I just took a look at some other reviews and it sounds like maybe they changed ownership?! Thank you for so many years of great food and wonderful service from the previous owners! You will be missed! After getting over the frustration with the appetizers yesterday, we decided to go ahead and try the tom kha soup and red curry this evening. My son reported that the soup was better this time. Last time it was watery and didn't have much chicken. This was a bit of a relief since its been his favorite for about 20 years!! The red curry is a bit different - thicker, more veggies, chicken pieces not as consistent - more like what I've had from other restaurants than the previous Calgang recipe. Perhaps a bit salty but otherwise good. I like the additional vegetables. The jasmine rice seems to be of a lower quality and not cooked as well as in the past, but we were happy that they included it in the order as last time it had been left off (through delivery). The delivery option does not seem to include the Combo option anymore either although it did last year. If you're expecting the same food you enjoyed at Jahn Thong and Cal Gang for years, you may be disappointed. We'll probably try again and see how things are coming along. Today we decided to go out to dinner with the girls. We went to order our favorite Thai dishes, the waiter as always was very kind and attentive. He brought the food everything was fine we ordered a plate of The Yellow Curry with meat, the curry sauce was practically water the meat was too hard to chew the vegetables were almost raw so to speak. The waiter asked us, do you want to take the food with you? Very kindly, I replied that you think it will be different at home, and of course we didn't. It was a total waste. Unfortunately, we arrived almost when they were closing. I recommend that if you are ever going to eat, do not arrive when they are closing because that is when they do not make good food.
