I went in for an interview and had to wait for the manager to finish eating her lunch. Then she told me I had been late. What? Excuse me.. I had to wait for you, like you didn't even know I was coming. She then grilled me on every place I have ever worked and told me I 'move around too much'. So no one is ever allowed to try a new job? Then she asked how long I would be there, and told me she is looking for someone for 2 years. Like that is realistic to ask of someone working in a chain restaurant. I live in Maryville and eat at Calhouns often. Normally, the food and service are both great but something was off this time around. My mom and I stopped by for a late lunch on Tuesday. The host desk was empty. It took a while to get noticed. We were finally seated. It seemed there was only one waitress working the entire dining room. She was doing her best to keep up but service was definitely slow. We were waiting on drinks on multiple occasions and my mom's cup of soup took forever to make it to the table. I ordered the California burger and side salad. It's really hard to screw up a salad. Calhouns salads are usually really fresh, but the salad tasted old, even the croutons were soft. The burger was terribly dry. I didn't send it back but I should have. I left feeling disappointed for the first time. I'm hoping this is an isolated incident as this is one of the few restaurants in Maryvile that I really enjoy. Normally, I drive to Knoxville to eat, simply because the food is better there. Wow very surprised with our meal. Service could of been better but who knows why it was slow so we could overlook that. Supposed to be great rib place I think maybe they are sometimes but they were so dry it was an effort to chew I wasn't going to say anything but I just couldn't eat it. They replaced it with beef brisket and it may have been the worst brisket I've ever had. My wife had prime rib and it was cooked good and looked great but without the au jus sauce there would of been no flavor. Sides were below average as well. read more

I dined at this Maryville location on 10/22/19 and had an average experience. The food was average and the service was prompt. My issue and reason for one star comes after the meal. My server accidentally forgot to put my credit card in the bill binder with the receipt for me to sign. It was a mistake and those things happen. I did not notice and signed the bill and drove away. When I left, I drove 2 hours 45 min to Nashville when I stopped and realized I did not get my credit card back. I immedately called and spoke with a gal that verified she did have my card. I asked them to please mail it to me since I was already 3 hours away and live out of state. She said she had to check and get permission. After waiting on hold she returned and agreed to mail the card back to me. Guess what - I never got the card! I called again on 10/29 and talk to the Manager and was told they still have my card and did not mail it as promised. The "Manager" says she has to get permission from the GM to mail my card back so she doesn't get in trouble. She calls me back today, 10/30 to tell me the GM said no we can't mail the card. When I ask why, she tells me "it is illegal" to mail it. Really? When I ask why she says "how can they just mail the card when they don't have an ID or anything". She never asked me for an ID but I provided my name, company name, bank name and the last four digits of the card. If she would have asked for ID also, I could have texted her a copy. Who would even know they have the card with this much detail other than the card owner? The overall attitude and tone I got from her was just unprofessional and had zero desire to help me as a CUSTOMER. She even asked me "why can't you just cancel the card and get a new one from the bank?" I tried to explain that its my Corporate travel card and connected to about 8 other accounts but I could tell she didn't care and just wanted off the phone. We are in town on business and came in for there famous ribs and that and the brisket was fantastic, so we came back again and the weekend special was prime rib and shrimp....oh melt in your mouth good ...we eat it medium rare and they nailed it!!! I stopped by this Calhoun's today for lunch and was so pleased over all. The food was fast and delicious and the service was even better! I had my two little ones with me and it isn't always easy to do that. Sarah, the host could see that I was struggling keeping them calm and came over to offer her assistance. This restaurant always seems chaotic. Not sure why but this is the 3rd time eating here and it has felt the same each time. Smoked chicken and green beans was good. 2 attempts to cook a hamburger well done...didn't work. Finally gave up on it when it was still not even warm when brought to the table. Chicken fingers and fries were fine. Smoked wings were good. They had already brought all of our food before they even brought the dressing for the salad. We're not from TN but heard a lot about its ribs. Local people recommended Calhouns so we gave it a try. The place is a typical sport bar and restaurant with many TVs on the wall. As recommended, we ordered salad with their special cheddar cheese dressing, spinach maria side dish, fried okra and of course their ribs, pulled pork and chicken tender. Conclusion: nothing stands out! cheddar cheese dressing is like cheddar melt (in fries), spinach maria is blah. Surprisingly, the baby back rib with its sauce is just average. Pulled pork is soft but OK. Same as chicken. Service is nice. I guess we have to go to Memphis to get the authentic TN dry ribs. They don't have it here! read more

I've never really been crazy about this place but the last time I went I was very impressed. Got the prime rib and shrimp special and it was great. The server must have been new because he forgot the bread had to ask for a plate and he was one of those that kept saying "excellent". Didn't keep the drinks refilled and waited forever for my check. We visited this Calhoun's on Thanksgiving Day, and the staff was incredible! Our server was on top of all our drinks and had a great and humorous attitude. Since we were there for Thanksgiving, we all ordered the Smoked Turkey special. It was absolutely delicious, and everyone enjoyed it. While our experience is not typical since it was on a holiday, I would definitely recommend the friendly staff and great food at this location! read more

This was my first time here and my mom's second and we decided we will never go back. She ordered their fish and chips which was average. I ordered a ribeye steak because she was being overly generous and wanted me to indulge myself for being a huge help lately. This was simultaneously the most expensive and worst steak I've ever had. I ordered their 14 oz ribeye medium with mashed potatoes and baked beans. It was 29 bucks for this steak and it came to me so rare it tasted like iron(this is a huge concern for me, I don't want to get sick off of undercooked meat as I recently got food poisoning from raw tuna and it is the worst experience you could ask for). I sent the steak back because if it tastes like iron it's really really rare. I talked to three people including my waiter and the manager and they all knew I wanted it medium and they were kind to me and were recooking my steak. They came back with it and it was now so overdone I felt more like I was eating a leather boot than a piece of meat. I am a huge steak lover and considering this is the most I've ever paid for a steak I expected to get something really great and it was honestly terrible. Extremely disappointed and will never go back here. I can get better and cheaper steak at longhorn steakhouse anytime I want to. No compensation was ever offered and the steak they remade for me was not a new steak, it was the one I'd already cut into. We paid 51 bucks for our meal not including tips and we were never offered an apology or even a free drink or dessert or anything. Just an overall terrible experience. read more

When Taylor learned it was our first time in the area, she recommended some local favorites, including fried green tomatoes, fried okra (both we'd never had before) and the Trio. Hubs ordered a craft beer, he only had one and he is a beer drinker! With that I'm going to say beer is average. Our son ordered the 1/2 smoked chicken with cabbage & slaw, he's on a diet so he's watching what he eats. He wished he had ordered a full whole chicken! Yes it was that good. We went to Calhouns to celebrate my daughters graduation. We had a party of ten. The food was good, however the service was awful. It took forever to get drinks and the food took almost an hour to come out. They were not that busy as we were there early before the Maryville city graduation we had one member of the group come in half an hour after we ordered and they actually got there food first. It took forever to get drink refills and our check took a long time to come. All in all the food was good but I don't know if I will go back because the service was so bad. read more

The baby back ribs were meaty and had plenty of sauce. The chicken was dry rubbed and I thought it should have sauce, but it had a good smoky flavor. The pulled pork was spot on. This restaurant is an amazing restaurant if you are looking for a good place to eat in East Tennessee. Always great quality food. The reason I did review with a four star is that they forgot one of our baked potatoes when we got our stuff for takeout. Another time when I was eating it I said no onions, but they still put them on it. Just had dinner at calhouns. My wife ordered the fillet medium well. It came out rare. The waitress who is very good. Always have great service with her. Took the steak back to make another and instead of the chef putting a new steak on put the steak that my wife cut into with used utensils back on the grill and made it well well done. My wife ate it anyway because she didn't want to wait anymore. I got the ribs and they were as tough as beef jerky. The manager took them back and actually grilled them himself. I've tried the ribs a few times and they always come out stiff and tough. I always try to give them the benefit of the doubt and say to myself they will be better this time. They never get better. The first spinach Maria they brought out was burnt and over cooked. Guess it sat under the warmer for awhile. Spent $80 with tip for crap. Was offered free dessert. Never offered to comp at least the steak. I guess I will stick to the chicken sandwich and fries. Most consistent item on the menu. Hard to mess that up. read more

We hosted a wedding rehearsal dinner here last night and Calhouns did us proud! The venue is very attractive, high ceilings, very roomy, and sparkling clean. The management and staff were friendly, helpful, and efficient from our first conversation through our departure. Decorations were lovely, including flowers, candles, and a separate table for the dessert. All the food and drink was well prepared, promptly delivered, and as delicious as it could be! The only flavor to the ribs was the overpowering bbq sauce. Ribs seemed old, pressure cooked, and no seasoning. The beer cheese for the pretzel appetizer was watered down and lacked any significant flavor. We had to add the pretzel mustard to it for flavor.
