We had shrimp, meats, cheeses, fruits and various items as apps. We had chicken Piccata, pasta primavera, and veggie lasagna for mains. And espresso brownies and Tiramisu for dessert. Steven Goldstone, chef-owner, and Emily Bolmen, executive chef, provided a fantastic appetizer themed food extravaganza for a baby shower I hosted. Their food choices were wide. Because we had a few food allergies, Steve and Emily were very familiar with substitutions that could be made. The food offerings were attractive and delicious. Also provided were simple drinks in attractive dispensers - iced tea, lemonade, and iced water. The caterers arrived on time, and finished set up with time to spare. I was also able to rent tables, chairs, and table linens from them that they set up and put away with help. California Catering did not disappoint. I called and had the pleasure of working with Steve. I was planning my Brother-in-law's Celebration of Life and needed catering for 125 people. Fantastic catering done by DNL! I'm part of the Events Committee at my job and was able to sample the delectable dishes a few minutes before our winter work lunch in Dec. My coworker found this caterer on Thumbtack-- super useful! While helping plan the annual casual event, we knew right away the Winter Yuletide buffet was the way to go! Very affordable as well. Menu included: Cheese ravioli with artichoke & mushroom cream sauce-- No more left for to go! Soo good and not too rich! A guest mentioned he doesn't like pasta but he liked this. Herb encrusted roast beef with au jus tasted like tri tip! Tender, juicy, flavorful, and didn't need steak sauce. I was fortunate to bring a whole take out container home to share with the family. Oven roasted turkey is a must at holiday gatherings, gravy and cranberry sauce included. Sautéed green beans with almond slices are a nice touch. Wild rice pilaf with cranberries and walnuts was the perfect change to ordinary mashed potatoes. All of the mozzarella and tomatoes disappeared from the caprise salad, both ranch and bacon vinaigrette offered to dress it up. Lots and lots of dinner rolls! Array of cheesecakes: strawberry swirl, original, Oreo, chocolate, and chocolate cake slices. I noshed on a slice of the latter during clean up duty. Staff is prompt, friendly, and most definitely delivers. Set up and clean up seemed problem free from my point of view. It's safe to say Lori and Pat from our events committee were impressed and will keep DNL at the top of our list for work event caterers. Great job, DNL and thank you! read more

We went with the Italian menu and I was absolutely pleased with the service, quality of food and communication with Steven. They arrived timely and set up a beautiful buffet with plenty of food for over 100. Everyone at the celebration had great things to say about the food and I highly recommend them for any occasion. It was challenging to find a caterer for my grandmother's funeral since I live out of state. We were not able to do any tasting, so it was a gamble on our behalf. We were at a wedding where DNL Catering was the caterer. It was a very intimate wedding. We didn't even know there was going to be a reception until the night before. My hubby was recruited to help a bit so we were in the food area while the caterer was setting up. This is what the bride and groom chose to serve: (**please see below where I listed the proper information of what was served.) Chicken skewers - awesome, just the perfect amount of flavor, and cooked to perfection Meat balls - good, the sauce was a sweet sauce Phyllo dough cups with brie (we think) and preserves on top - this was soooo good. It was the perfect amount of cheese, dough, and sweet. Most everyone in line was just taking one of everything because we wanted to make sure that everyone had a chance so I only got one of these, but they were the talk of the table. YUM! Bruscheta topped with a tomato slice, a slice of cheese, and basil leaf - It was yummy. Often times bruscheta is so crunchy that when you bite into it is shatters . . . well this had sat the perfect amount of time because it was not soggy, and not so hard that it shattered. I actually was able to bite it and eat it properly. I think this was a good idea to put Insalata Caprese on the brusheta instead of the typical chopped tomatoes because those have a tendency to fall off the bruscheta onto my lap. Crab Dip - I don't eat crab so I didn't try it --- people were saying it was good. Crackers - Assortment of water crackers A tray of cubed salami and cheese, olives, artichoke hearts, and pickles - what is there to say about this? (Nothing, if was good.) Cookies - I had one, it was good, moist And chocolate covered strawberries - The biggest strawberries I have ever seen in my life. There were some that were (my) fist size. HUGE berries! I didn't have one, but I heard they were not that sweet. All in all, I liked it. I liked it enough to look at the invoice to get the name of the company and the price of what was served. We hired California Catering Cafe to cater a taco/fajita bar for our daughter's graduation party. Steve was super accommodating and easy to work with from the first phone call to the final tear down. We had vegans, vegetarians, and carnivores attending the party, so the taco/fajita bar was a perfect choice! Steve and Emily labeled all items (beautifully!) and noted which were vegan so everyone was comfortable with their food choices. I was hesitant contracting with Steve / DNL Catering as his Yelp reviews aren't all that 'current', but he provided me with a few current references - which I contacted... I hired Steve / DNL to provide the "Homestyle Breakfast" for my work group of '50 men' last week... There was plenty of food, the food was great, and the (Juan's) scones were DELICIOUS! As I stated the food is always ok and the service is acceptable She is correct they did not give us hotdogs, it was burgers, veggie burgers and chicken. I used DNL catering for my two day corporate event and can show the receipts. Steve is the worst person to work with. He has terrible manners was not on time. He order champagne glasses when I asked for wine glasses. He over charged me for server. I told him what wines to buy but he thought he knew better than me so he took it upon himself to buy wines I didn't ask for and billed me for them. Our company event was ruined because of DNL catering. The champagne glasses that he thought were more elegant got of our of designs at our design center. He takes no responsibility and the second day even his replacement said he did a crap job and should have ran things by me. I would not recommend them to any company for an event or meeting. I needed a caterer for an event in Milpitas for some hors d'ouerves and beverages, and was on a tight budget. DNL made it very simple. They were very accessible and friendly, and were able to comply with my numerous calls constantly changing the terms of the order. It was no problem for them. I finally got a set budget from my clients and DNL very quickly came up with a perfect menu for my event that was sufficient and fit the budget. Based on prior positive reviews, we wish them well and hope he gets back to the level of service he delivered in the past. However, I am unable to endorse DNL for the following issues we experienced at our company's sponsored event: 1. Steve arrived over 1 hour late (just 15 minutes before our event's start) 2. The food and beverages were not set out completely prior to the event's start. As a result, they were actively unpacking and setting out items while our event was underway. The event and food/beverages were in the same room so it was very disruptive 3. Steve took food with his bare hands off our food platters and ate in front of guests and my team. When I asked him to stop he shared it is one of his nervous habits. 4. A beverage table was agreed to in our layout but beverages remained on the floor in a plastic bucket until we requested they be properly displayed. 5 We invited several students to help pass food. We asked Steve to provide a bit of guidance. The students arrived early and waited patiently in a teacher's lounge for Steve to arrive. Because of Steve's late arrival, he provided them little to no guidance. To avoid any day-of-event issues Steven and my team agreed to 2 items: 1. a tasting in advance of the event as we had not worked with him before and wanted to sample food he would be serving at our event. Curiously, he brought 3 items but only one was on the agreed upon event menu so we did not feel it was representative tasting. 2. an opportunity for Steve to visit the site in advance which went quite well To Steve's credit, we did need to significantly scale back our food and beverage order as the event was smaller than our original guest projections. He was timely and willing to work with us on this adjustment. Also, he is in transition working out of a temporary space which may have contributed to some of the misses. read more
