I have been to a number of tanning places and this was by far the cleanest, most aesthetic place I've seen, and [[HIGHLIGHT]]the staff was WONDERFUL and explained all the different membership options with me patiently.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] (And I had A LOT of questions.) I've actually never been to a nicer tanning salon and I've been to a lot! The staff is friendly, there are tons of unique offerings, great clean beds, and the prices are very reasonable. Some things to consider regarding bad reviews below... 1) They closed down early one time because their whole computer system crashed. 2) They close at 8PM now instead of 9PM because they take people up to the last minute and don't normally get out until 9PM. Most places stop taking customers 30 minutes before closing and only have beds/spray tan. The extra massage, salt, red light adds time so it makes sense. 3) There were 3 people working the register and I had no wait on a Friday nonetheless! 4) They have the highest end lotions and I paid the lowest price I've ever paid for them. Beware! Shady billing practices. Hard to cancel. Cal Sun will up sale you like the mafia every time you go in. Dewey location is the least kept up. They even had an employee that had her kids w her running around. I'm a mother and understand things happen. However, this happened countless times. The "dad" was seen smoking out front at times too. It made for a strange company practice. They charge a yearly facility fee regardless of the level of membership you have. I was a member for close to 10 years. The level of membership I had they didn't even offer anymore. I asked for proof of my signed agreement for the facility fee given they claim the facility fee is for the spa/like services and ambience. They were unable to provide me with my signed copy agreement. When I asked for the facility fee to be waived this time given my membership did not cover that, they said it is still offered so I must pay for it even though I do not use those services and my membership does not cover the services. I canceled my membership based on the horrible customer service I received. I have requested an email copy confirmation of my cancellation three times and they have not given it to me. There are other smaller companies that do not charge a facility fee nor upsell you every time you go in. they know your name and you don't have to show your license every time which was incredibly nice. please look for them and use them. BUYER BEWARE: If you stop in for a one time visit, they will likely try to talk you into a membership. This is what happened to me and I wish I had looked here first. It is true, as someone else stated, that they charge a "facilities" fee. It is also now increased to $30. When you sign up, they go through the charges verbally and then hand you a blank screen to electronically sign. I made the mistake of trusting what the associate told me and did not insist that they provide me a written copy. She did not offer me one either. I needed to cancel toward the end of March after a job loss. Because I did not cancel before the 20th, I was stuck on the hook for the whole month of April - bummer but fair enough as I was made aware of that date upon sign up. But today, 4/1, I see a charge for $102 (membership is currently $69.95/month) on my bank statement. I called and was told for the first time about this annual fee. I asked if since I had only been a member for a month and a half and that I was certain that no one told me about that fee, could it be waived? She refused. I was planning on returning once things picked back up but they lost what could have been years of repeat monthly revenue over $30 - poor, short-sighted customer service. Anyway, just wanted to save someone else the stress of having money taken out of your account for something you did not expect. If you sign up, know that you can not trust what they tell you and they will not do right by you if one of their associates omits telling you things you will be charged for. I usually research things before I buy, but this one I didn't. They suck for many reasons. The first one being, I go there pretty much on a daily to attempt to get some sort of color before Summer, and they still don't know my name. I am still flashing my drivers license which they pretend to look at and then they can't find me because they can't spell my name. The second reason why I don't like the place is they claim to not know when their bulbs have been changed which is probably not enough considering they don't know or can't recall. One of their old time customers told me that they purposely don't tell this because people will only use the new bulbed beds. Well, I don't want to get burned from going into an old bulbed bed for two days and then I have to use a new bulbed bed on the third and then I get burned. Then get this, a friend told me to go to the "richer" neighborhood salons because they stay on top of the bulb replacements there. Yes, they don't want to piss off those purse strings! So basically, the staff is miserable and you are going to get a great tan there. Small business must be where it's at. I am canceling my membership and looking elsewhere! Almost every review that I have read that has been negative is because they want to cancel. When you sign up for the membership at California sun read what you were signing. It will say if you're locked into a contract. I don't understand why people are so mad at their own ignorance. Take accountability. This place has highly questionable business practices. In addition to the annoyance of trying to get you to buy overpriced, cheap smelling lotions and upgrades every single time you go there, they make you agree to a contract unless you pay for individual sessions each time-- and the price is outrageous! Then you try to cancel, and I even got verification of cancellation, and they continue to charge you. They have a D+ rating on the BBB, and my bank is going after them for fraud because they used a card with an expired date, so I am definitely not alone. The other thing is this-- not once, not twice, but several times there were dead roaches in the room. There were also towels that felt wet and smelled in a supposedly cleaned bed. I stopped going when Covid hit and I would never go now...that would be scary...but they tried to charge me when they reopened. Extreme stand-up! Yep, that's right. Not only do they have everything you would expect from a great California Sun tanning salon, they have more! The extreme stand up is one of the best stand ups I have used. They offer other great beds and stand-ups but I come here mostly for the extreme. There is rarely, if ever, a wait. The ladies that work here area always helpful and eager to sell you some lotion or clothing, both of which I have fallen victim! I am a sucker for a great discount! I went here the other day, because the Arden location is convienent, especially if you're at the mall. However, this location does not even compare to Pocket. I waited 20 minutes in line, just to speak to a front desk staff member. I noticed the staff members are taking their time with each customer, which I can appreciate, BUT it isn't great when you're in a line 5 people deep. I would just advise the shop to have more front desk staff on weekends, or some sort of express check in option. read more

Beware of this company! You sign up for a specific amount monthly and then they think they can just take additional money from you whenever they feel like it. Whatever an "annual facilities fee" is, it is definitely never disclosed upon signing up, yet they think they can just steal money from people's bank accounts. There's a reason this place has received the rating of D+ on the BBB website. I had thought that I cancelled my membership months ago but found out it never went through and I've been getting charged for this entire time. Sending in my second cancellation notice now, will be vigilant in making sure it is actually processed. The fact that they do not accept cancellation letters in store but yet, require paperwork and other things to be done in the store just proves that they want to make it difficult to cancel and easy to lose your actual cancellation request. If you have no issues processing other paperwork in retail locations you should have zero issues processing cancellations and if you're going to force cancellations to be mailed, figure out a way to accurately process them. Reading the complaints on BBB it appears this is a common issue. Also, don't bother trying to drive your cancellation letter to corporate and personally ensure it's delivery, you won't be able to find their office. Google sends you in circles and none of the buildings in or around their address on the map are marked as belonging to California Sun. Hmmm...I wonder why they don't want to mark their own building, why they wouldn't want customers to be able to locate their office. Overall poor customer service, experience, and does not appear to be an upstanding organization. After being a tanning customer for over 10 years in multiple states through multiple companies they are hands down the worst tanning company I've ever had to interact with. read more

I had to laugh at the reviewer that said she was a big fan of skin care and therefore went tanning. Considering tanning (especially indoors) is one of the most harmful things you can do to your skin, I question her definition of "skin care". :: hops off soap box :: I understand the appeal of a bronze glow, but I personally go with a non-UV based approach known as spray tanning. This location has two options for this, the Versa Spa (my machine of choice) and the Mystic. Whenever I have spray tanned, I've used the clear solution in the Versa and gotten nice, subtle results. However, on my last (and final) visit to CA Sun Centers, the Versa was out of order so I was offered the Mystic. I expressed that I only wanted the subtle, clear solution and was assured that the Mystic had the same stuff as the Versa and would produce equivalent results. LIES!! As soon as I got out of the Mystic I saw brown drops of solution all over my body. Obviously not clear if I can see it, genius orange glo girls at the counter! I wiped as much of the solution off me as I could and left, hoping for the best. That night, after the color had fully appeared, I had the hue of an Oompa Loompa. I sh!t you not, I wasn't bronze, I was oddly orange. I called corporate to complain and request a cancellation of my membership. The lady was unapologetic and refused to waive my cancellation fee even though I wouldn't have been cancelling had I not received inaccurate information/service. Whatever, I paid the fee and will never return. My revenge, I suppose, is a terrible Yelp review, beezies! read more

I just called and tried to cancel because I am MOVING and they told me that I wasn't allowed to cancel, and if I talked to corporate I might (might) be able to split the cost of 7 months of fees (at $69 a pop) for a grand total of $241. It's the Hotel California [Sun]: you can check out any time you like but you can never leave! I went to this place every summer for 5 or 6 years. I started going back when the first one opened on Sunrise. I used to just purchase the credits rather than a monthly plan since I tan just 5 or so months out of the year, but the last couple of years, they changed their credits program and I got pressured into doing the 6 month membership (which automatically renews until you cancel). Problematically, when my six month contract was up and I tried to fill out the cancellation-form in the store that was specified in my contract as the way to cancel, they said that they didn't have those forms anymore and I would have to write in to the corporate office to cancel. Great, extra hurdle. So I sent Cal Sun a letter to cancel and assumed that would stop my automatic withdrawals. Nope! They kept charging my bank account for two months and said that because my cancellation letter wasn't sent by certified mail, it didn't count. I tried to cancel over the phone with the corporate office, and they wouldn't accept that either. So then I had to send them another cancellation letter by certified mail, and they still charged me for the following month after I canceled my mail that second time. It's a decent salon, but I'll never go there again. I'm happy with midown's Pro Tan where they don't try to extort extra money from their patrons. If you must go there, then I would recommend purchasing credits/individual tans rather than giving them your credit card number. It's just a big consumer-ripoff scheme. Check out the Better Business Bureau on this company. There are tons of similar complaints about credit card fraud/not being able to cancel membership. I have not personally had a problem with cleanliness there, but my best friend actually got a rash from one of the beds not being properly sterilized. After hearing that, I'm really glad that I'm not going there anymore. read more

I've always turned a cheek to how annoying it is when they try to sell you every thing under the sun every single time you go in. Last year I had to put my account on hold due to the fact that I was pregnant and not allowed to tan. I paid my $5 a month to put my account on hold. I ended up having a c section which got infected. Rather than allowing me to continue to put my account on hold until my doctor cleared me, they refused to allow me to keep it on hold. That's right, they rather me come in and tan with an infection (which I would never do because I clearly care about sanitary more then they do) just to collect $50 a month more. Everything that you are stating is CLEARLY explained in the membership comtract when you sign up. YES it is true you may be charged up to 2 months after the day you cancel because it is a 30 DAY notice, so depending on when you cancel, you could get charged up to 2 more times (BUT YOU CAN ALSO BE TANNING THAT ENTIRE 2 MONTHS). I go to California Sun because of the convenience of their location. From my experience, all their employee training consists of is selling, selling, selling without mind of integrity. They will lie to you about just about anything if it means making a sale. I understand it's important for a company to make money but from my experience, the policies and promotions change day by day depending on who you talk to and what they feel they can sucker you into. A few employees there are pretty smooth with their upselling skills. But I've found myself feeling bad for the newbies knowing how much pressure their under to make a sale. I have many years experience working for a company that was ALL about the SALE with no care for the customer or the employee and I can smell this a mile away. I will continue to go to California Sun because I understand that they are not unlike most other tanning companies (Cancellation, upselling, policies, contracts ETC). I use to travel quite a bit to Sacramento, usually right before I had to speak @ a symposium. I am a huge fan of skin care and therefore would stop in at the various convenient locations of this large chain of high end tanning salons/skin care. I love the one in Roseville and Rancho Cordova. They all appear to have the same high end equipment, squeaky clean beds and high end skin care. I;ve even purchased a few cute t-shirts and bikinis. I would spend a total of 30 minutes: a quick 7 minute visit in their top of the line bed or lower grade, a quick mist of spray tan and then off to the airport. The employees are all adorable and super knowledgeable. Take their advice on the beds if you want results. Do ALWAYS use lotion prior to tanning and always prep before you spray tan or you will end up with streaks. Don't skimp on your toes, heals, bottom of your feet and hands. Also-I find socks and sneakers to be the best for streak free feet. People always suggest flip flops try both and see what works best for your feet and skip perfume the day your going to tan. read more

This is a average tanning Salon. The beds here are very good. Something they could work on is Speed of service. Every time I step foot in there to tan I have to wait 15 to 20 minutes to get into a bed. The reason being the guy that works there is always asking costumers what lotions they have. When there is a line of 5 other people waiting in line to check in and a bunch of beds available should mean pick up the pace. Time management is important. Stopped going to this location due to multiple times of not being able to get in and get out in a timely manner. read more
