Traveling from NC to AZ. Last time I was here I asked my hosts for some fantastic Mexican food and was sorely disappointed by bad texmex garbage tacos. This time I ventured out on my own and was rewarded greatly. NC has a decent Mexican community but obviously nowhere near the Phoenix area. But I've travelled a lot and eaten in many cities throughout the US. Holy hell! These Quesa Birria tacos from Calizona, are the best I have ever had. Well portioned. Great consumè. CaliZona Tacos is a little red food truck off the side of the road along Grand Avenue in front of an old plumbing business. You'll see the little red truck near the road. Behind the truck there are picnic tables and chairs set out if you'd like to order your food and eat there. There are drinks and salsas available in coolers at the side of the truck facing away from the street. There's plenty of parking in the private lots surrounding the truck and the businesses. This place is always busy. My daughter used to DoorDash and always saw busy lines and customers here, especially on Friday and Saturday nights. We felt like having a good burrito so we decided to try them out. The family running the truck is extremely friendly and answered questions I had about ordering. Based on the recommendations, I decided to the Birria, with no regrets. We ordered: - Asada Burrito (x2) - Birria Quesadilla - Asada Taco I tried the Asada and it was very flavorful. My Birria quesadilla was amazing. I ate way too much. I've never squeezed lemon on my quesadilla, but after trying it today, I will definitely do so in the future. This is tender and flavorful and the quesadilla is filled to overflowing with it. This is a very large quesadilla cut into four pieces. I dare you to finish it and still be hungry. Calizona Tacos, in addition to being my favorite food truck just absolutely crushed it with a catering order for my daughter's promotion family party. Everything was super fresh, hot, incredibly delicious and well packaged and came with everything we needed and the family loved it! Lucky me, we ordered too much and I ate birria tacos for lunch and dinner for 3 days afterwards, and I'm still wanting more! As many others have stated, don't let the location discourage you from stopping by. Yes, it looks real sketchy, especially at night, but this little food truck spot is far better than many others in much nicer spots. My wife and I stopped by on a random night. We ordered a couple quessabirrias, some of consomé, and asked for an order of birria to go. Overall everything was exceptional. Very flavorful. Perhaps for some it may be too greasy, but these are some of the best birria tacos I've had in the west valley. read more

Unfortunately, I can only rate them with a four star because they've been no where in sight approximately 40% of the time that I've gone to their location. Stumbled upon this little gem today and dined for taco Tuesday! Now let me say they blew me away in expectation. Ordered 3 birria queso tacos to get the cosme dip free & since it was the first time in decided to order a classic asada taco. The queso tacos were crispy and were made to order. Paired the perfectly w/ the horchata that was smooth (NOT powdery like other places). The asada taco was also very good. Meat used was of good quality & the tortillas. RING THE ALARM This little taco truck is exactly what I needed to find. We are from CA and missed the tacos back home but so happy we stumbled across this gem! You arrive to the food truck, with folding tables covered by a large canopy. They have little coolers on each table that store their variety of salsas. Let me tell you, this place is easy to miss especially if you aren't looking for it. Also just be aware it's in a sketchy parking lot but GIVE IT A CHANCE!!! And hey, if you don't feel comfortable just go during the day. It's worth it. Just don't leave valuables in the car and be sure to lock your doors. Now the food... the important part... We tried the Quesabirria, Asada and Birria tacos, as well as Horchata. The Quesabirria tacos with consommé are incredible. The Birria itself is very flavorful, then you hit that gooey cheese on the inside and cheese crisp outside of the tortilla, then you dip it in the hot and savory consommé, soooo good! Hits the spot. Their Asada tacos were also incredible! We had to order two more after sampling one! The Asada isn't a cheap cut, sometimes some places use bad cuts of meat but these were so good and still juicy while getting that classic grilled Asada taste. I topped mine with onion, cilantro and there salsa verde. I always go for the verde salsa. The Birria taco was also very flavorful but I prefer the Quesabirria over it. They had agua frescas as well. Cucumber Lemonade and Horchata so we went with the classic horchata. Not too sweet and doesn't have that fake horchata mix powder taste. It was very refreshing! All in all we enjoyed it, we dined at their picnic tables, the young man who took our order was very polite and chatted with us briefly. The food came out quickly and overall it was a great experience. This has become our new spot for tacos for sure! I'll be dreaming of these tacos every day for the rest of my life. Let's taco bout it. (See what I did there?) if you know me or read my reviews there's three things I could live on forever. Tacos of course, Pho and Cold Brew. There are a couple taco spots I frequent, but I always listen for new places to check out. If they're local I definitely have to come and support. My daughter and I were in the mood for some Quesa Birria tacos so I looked around to see what my options were near El Mirage since we were in the area supporting another local spot. My eyes instantly saw Calizona and I knew this was where we were headed. I've heard great things and I'm honestly surprised I hadn't stopped yet since our favorite butcher shop/market for asada and such is so close. I followed the directions and knew where to stop when I saw the red truck. The lot it is parked in is small, but there was decent parking. I can see it filling up quick. It is located in front of a busy tire shop. As I stated it is a food truck so there is no inside seating. There is however multiple tables with tent cover. Each table has a cooler with salsa to keep cold. The menu is simple and so many tasty options. After a few questions we went with six quesa Birria tacos which to my surprise free consommé because we ordered more than three. We ended up with two consommé which was more than enough even with my daughter dunking those tacos like her life depended on it ha ha. Let me tell you if you could win a taco contest on looks and smell alone they'd win every time. Presentation was on point, some lemons topped a few and oh man from the first bite to the last we couldn't get enough. The flavor was fantastic. The consommé kicked it up to a whole new level and the toppings fresh. We arrived around 1pm so it wasn't too busy; just a few other people. Service was good and the cashier gave us some salsa containers to fill to take our food with us. It was a bit cold so while we did take it to go we sat and ate it in the car. Make sure you grab plenty of napkins because those juices run wild. Salsa options had a good kick. I already am planning our next visit to bring back more family and try the rest of the menu. If you're a lover of Birria then run don't walk. This is definitely a piece of taco heaven in the much needed west valley! read more

Let's start off by saying I'm from Cali and am so glad I checked Yelp before I settled to eat anywhere else while I was in the area. The quesabirria tacos here were amazingly delicious! The authenticity of flavors in the consome and birria itself were a hit. The best I've had. Ever. My family and I couldn't stop saying "mmm!" Lol The staff were very kind and the service was pretty fast granted we ordered 12 tacos. Horchata was flavorful with just the right amount of cinnamon. We finally ordered from Calizona. Amazing food! We forgot to take pictures it was that good! The carne asada burrito was huge with rice, beans, cilantro, and onion. The bean burrito was big and not runny. The quesabirra quesadilla was huge and juicy with a slight crisp. The carne asada quesadilla was big and my daughter ended up loving it. So me and my son ate her bean burrito. Lol. Big portions, the meat wasn't dry, all the food had flavor, and well worth it. How convenient it is for us to be 5 minutes away haha For sure we will back!
