My fiancé and I were looking for a place for an early lunch as we start our day at 5:30 am in the morning. We saw the signage for Tacos Calafia and decided to try it. Upon entering we were greeted by a friendly young lady who took our order and payment. Everything is self service, ie., the condiments and drinks, etc. Our number was called for us to pick up our food. Everything was delicious and the soda was just right. We enjoyed our food. This is a very nice taco place run by friendly people with good food. It is close to my mom's house and the food feels authentic. My husband and I decided to try Taco's Calafia. So disappointed No favor in any of the tacos. The self chili, with the vegetables was very disappointing. The cucumber was old soggy , I took a bite of the cucumber I spit it out. The Chips are stale out of the bag. They had in a big gray tub , like if they make him there very deceiving. The red chile was to hot no flavor. The green tomatillo was too thick , no flavor. Lol don't waste your money. We don't mind paying for good food.The tacos are street tacos 4.00 each don't mine you changing the 4.00 dollars. tacos are plain No flavor no ingredients just plain. The food is really good with limited options but all of them are great. The service was good food came quick and the tables and floors were clean. My favorite taco spot while I was living in Arizona for about 2 years! It was my go-to place since it was super close to my work and I would go at least 3-4 times/months. My favorites were the asada tacos and quesadilla. It was around $3/taco and $8 for a quesadilla. I loved their horchata, it tasted very delicious and not overly sweet. I loved their sauce/topping bar because there are so many unlimited toppings (cilantro, onions, lemons, 3 different kinds of salsa, pico de Gallo). There is usually a line if you go around noon but it moves super fast. The staff is pretty friendly and welcoming. The tacos and asada are freshly made to order and always tastes delicious! It is very clean and spacious with plenty of seating! Parking is super easy and plenty of space.. definitely recommend this spot! read more

Coming to Tacos Calafia made for a perfect post workout brunch. My hubby had the cabeza burrito, while I ordered the nopales, cabeza, and carne asada street tacos on flour tortillas. He and I shared the quesadilla and added pollo to it. There are three salsas today, medium spice red and green salsas and a decently hot red super spicy salsa. They also offered guacamole, chopped white onions and cilantro and limes to enhance the already delicious flavors of all the foods. I ordered a Michelada, which was bigger than I thought it would be! It felt very refreshing along with the tacos. I ordered mine with Dos Equis beer. I like having such a great taco place nearby. They offer and awesome happy hour with 2 for one margaritas and there are also family meals you can take out if you can't eat there. read more

This was the first taco place I went to in the Phoenix area, it looks like it's a small chain. Honestly I thought it was just okay, but it was near the hotel which was nice. My boyfriend got a margarita (served in a plastic cup, but still with salt); a "Vampirio" taco; and a regular carne asada on corn tortilla. I got the same minus the margarita. I have had a "Vampire" taco before, at Yardhouse, and the shell was made out of cheese, so that is what I was expecting here, but unfortunately in this case it was more like a tostada, with cheese and then the Al Pastor meat. It was still tasty but the tostada part was burnt a little bit. I also had a carne asada taco on corn tortilla, which was good. You add the toppings yourself, which I hadn't seen before - they even had guac, which was nice, as well as cilantro/onions and a few other choices. Bathroom was clean, I used it at the end of our meal. Overall this place was okay but I wouldn't rush back, since AZ supposedly has a lot of great taco places. read more

Don't let the small menu and Tacos Calafia scare you away as the tacos here are pretty legit. They are street tacos, so I suggest you order at least three. I decided on four care asada (other protein choices include al pastor, pollo, cabeza, and nopales) tacos with corn tortillas. While I waited for my order, I decided to stock up on their salsa to get some onions, cilantro, hot salsa verde, lime wedges, and grilled jalapenos. My tacos were tender and had decent amount of flavor to them. Definitely hit the spot! All the money in that full tip jar goes to the register, which after balancing the register, it most likely goes into the deposit for the day and eventually ends up in the owner's paycheck. It's conveniently located near a main drag in Surprise. It's also about expectations, everyone is under staffed, so I always appreciate the service staff who are working. The parking is easy and plentiful.  The restaurant was clean and they also have a nice outdoor patio area.The service was fast and efficient and the line moved along quickly. It is a Southwest Mex street Tacos style place. This is not a mall based mexican chain restaurant or a high end Latin style bistro somewhere.  The food was good and solid hot and delicious.
