Good: Cherry Fletcher front desk + Jack @ kitchen were both FANTASTIC!!! But Callahan's does NOT even deserve 1-star it is SOOO BAD!! Hit-and-Miss experience from BAD-start then acceptable-mediocre-good halfway, then a very BAD end/check-out experience going to WORSE!! Check-In/Room #25 DIGUSTINGLY FILTHY room and carpets were even MORE FILTHY DIGUSTING with major mystery stains on multiple areas and cigarette burns as well, dried up drink spills that were NOT wiped and cleaned well, and more mystery stains on bathroom walls and shower walls, very OLD brown worn-out felt material covered heavy chairs (so dated) and disgusting, I had to put a layer of towels before I could set my travel bags on them, grimy table surfaces exhibiting very POOR housekeeping evidence that you wonder if staff is properly trained on how to clean/sanitize!!?? I literally had to sanitize first before I continued to unload my vehicle. Missing bathrobe, missing hairdryer, and the supposedly 'clean' sheets did NOT smell clean at all, in fact, it smelled like old body odor that was masked with downy dryer sheets - bad TOXIC combination for someone who is smell sensitive! Housekeeping Shannon hangs out and gossips with Troy at front desk which I overheard many times, as witnessed by other guests too, Shannon has very POOR follow-up with requests and has left without even picking up dirty dishes and laundry from outside my room door even when I put in calls at front desk for reminders-HORRIBLE POOREST LOWEST showmanship and DETESTABLE display of service skills!!! Check-out with Troy @ front desk was HORRIBLE!!! I was asking for his help in obtaining more doggy poop bags and when I approached the front desk to ask for his help, he waved a couple of pieces of paper in front of me rudely saying "i am really busy right now!" - are you serious with this reply to a hotel guest??? Troy exhibited HORRIBLE POOREST LOWEST showmanship and DETESTABLE display of service skills to me as a hotel guest!!I was so extremely shocked with his response that my mouth dropped open! The words "we are so busy" seems to be the choice poor pathetic excuse that the majority of the staff uses in this establishment because they are VERY IN-adequate in performing their expected roles to fulfill hotel guest service needs that it ruins your stay. Major Billing ERROR: I had to launch a Better Business Bureau Complaint to report their unethical and irresponsible business conduct in their billing practices - Cherry @ front desk quoted me $135 and they charged me $185 for my nightly room rate and NO one seems to want to rectify. I Am currently writing up another complaint with the State of Oregon Government Ethics Committee to report Callahan for many offenses they have caused me as a hotel guest for 1 week+. I was only able to have one small bit and had to push my order away!! My potatoes with my steak looked severely GREASY and PASTY it looked as if it had been sitting under a hot lamp for hours, I had to box up my order and had to give to my 2 dogs traveling with me! And our experience was even made worse by having a zero-care-absent-minded server Ben who obviously did NOT care how his service (or LACK thereof) has NEGATIVELY affected our visit there! This establishment SERIOUSLY needs to RE-train some of their serving staff! Note to the General Manager John - pay serious attention to these comments as we, your customers have every right to be treated well to receive value for our money that we pay you so you can be employed and have jobs so you can pay your bills! John-you need to significantly invest in RE-training your staff, particularly Ben who is in DIRE NEED to learn how to properly serve diners who have more discerning taste. It's unfortunate for our friend Ana'nda who stayed here, we are very close friends with her - she had MAJOR issues with hit-miss guest service experience and we saw evidence of this when we went up there to visit her - our friend is a savvy traveler and as a travel writer, she will not tolerate how she was treated even to the day of her check-out which we heard her story that she was treated very poorly - as evidenced of what we saw that night in the restaurant, we believe our friend and we encouraged her to take serious steps to correct it and we will back her up all the way. I wholeheartedly endorse choosing Callahan's as your lodging destination when visiting the Medford/Ashland area. My partner and I embarked on an unforgettable road trip from Washington State to Oakland, CA, with Callahan's as our inaugural stop. Not only did it serve as a perfect midway point for our journey, but it also happened to coincide with our plans to attend the Oregon Shakespeare Festival's enchanting production of "Twelfth Night," a performance I cannot recommend highly enough. From the moment we set foot in Callahan's, the exceptional staff and impeccable service left a lasting impression. Their warmth and attentiveness were evident right from check-in. However, our elevator experience on the fourth (highest) floor presented a minor hiccup. As the doors closed, the elevator unexpectedly stalled, leaving us confined for approximately 30 minutes. Thankfully, there was no need for panic as the staff, including the manager and chef, remained engaged throughout, communicating with us and working diligently to resolve the issue. They procured keys and expertly managed to manually open the doors before the Fire Department's arrival. In an incredibly generous gesture, they treated us to a complimentary dinner at their restaurant, with carte blanche to order anything we desired--be it drinks, appetizers, or desserts. The culinary experience was nothing short of exquisite; the fish and chips, featuring generous portions and flawlessly prepared ingredients, stood out. The chocolate torte and berry cobbler were equally delectable. Upon entering our room, we were pleasantly astounded by its spaciousness, featuring a luxurious en-suite hot tub, a king-size bed, a cozy fireplace and seating area, a quaint dining table, chairs, and a well-appointed closet area. To top it all off, the expansive deck afforded us a breathtaking view of the surrounding mountains and lush forest, complete with inviting rocking chairs. While our stay was indeed exceptional, I do have a couple of suggestions for further enhancement: The continental breakfast, while adequate, could benefit from a more diverse selection, including options catering to those watching their sugar intake. Introducing hard-boiled eggs and high-protein, low-sugar yogurt would be a thoughtful addition. Additionally, upgrading the coffee to a richer blend would elevate the breakfast experience. The mattress in our room leaned towards the softer side, potentially posing comfort concerns for guests with a preference for firmer support. I would recommend considering a medium-firm mattress option when upgrading bedding. In conclusion, Callahan's provided an unforgettable experience with its gracious staff, extraordinary dining, and unparalleled accommodations. Callahan's is the quintessential mountain ski Lodge about 20 mi south of Ashland. The lodge, the rooms, and the staff are exceptional. We had a king room for a very reasonable price that came with a fireplace, jetted tub, and a shared balcony. Where the problem comes in is in their dining room. Apparently due to new investors who think that everybody has massive amounts of money to spend, they changed the menu without updating it online and because you're almost a half an hour from town unless you want to drive again, you're stuck eating there. Their new menu is a 5 course meal or an ala carte bar menu. For the five course meal you sit at a table with a white tablecloth and in the same room the bar menu is it tables with no table cloth which was beyond silly. On the five course menu you get soup and salad of their choice that are gazpacho and a fufu salad with weird ingredients, your choice of dessert, and the entree. I don't even know if it came with bread. The prime rib 5 course was $80. The prime rib a la carte was $60. Those were per person! We opted for the a la carte menu. The prime rib entree on the à la carte menu was the prime rib, mashed potatoes and vegetables. The prime rib was pretty good but the mashed potatoes were terrible as they added horseradish in them and they added way too much and you got very little vegetables. We got a side of bread which was six pieces of focaccia for $10. The margarita I got was a little tiny cocktail glass for $13. Their prices are exorbitant. And the food did not live up to expectations at that price. I have had better prime rib with all of the side dishes for half that price. We paid more for the dinner than we did for the room! I would absolutely stay there again however I will eat somewhere else. The new owners better go back to the old menu because their new menu sucks. I feel bad for the staff. O.K. I had stopped going to Callahans years ago because of the quality of the food. Famous for the less then mediocre diner food at outrageous prices. It was approximately 10-11 months ago I was talked back into trying Callahans by a co-worker under the guise that there was a new Chef and the food had dramatically improved. Less then optimistic I ventured forth and gave an old institution another chance. I was blown away. This was back in the end of March or beginning of April 2011 I cant remember exactely when, I was sitting and enjoying one of the best meals I have had in ASHLAND. I have seriously been back 2-3 times a month since, alot of times with large parties. However my last 2 recent experiences have been so far less then stelar that it pains me to report. First recent experience evrything was not on par and quite frankly POOR. Chalk it up to bad night!!!! Next experience within a week even worse. My wife and I confronted our friendly server and questioned why the menu had changed so drastically recently and we were told that the Chef of the last 1 1/2 years had left and Callahans was restructuring. Well after all these years we tolerated your food, then we had a small glimpse into quality food coupled and complimenting the ambience of the lodge, now there is no going back. The food has declined dramatically in short period of time but not only that Spaghetti and (2) meatballs $21 FOR REAL $21 for spaghetti and (2) meatballs. You people are on another planet. $21 FOR SPAGHETTI AND MEATBALLS. It does no good to gouge your customer. I wish I could give more than 3 and a half. And that is plainly for all the people that work there. They where all very nice and helpful. But the place was a huge mess. Lack of management/support. They where out of half the dinner menu when we came. They didn't let the waitress know until she went back with each item we ordered and she would have to come back and tell us sorry where out. That is something ridiculous, and is the kitchens fault, something that should be brought up beginning of shift and make sure your one server knows. Bad management. Everyone we dealt with in the front of the house where great. Bartenders great as well. Love that they actually know how to pour. But he was ready to close the bar 30 Minutes before three even closed The room.... my partner has perfect eye sight and how r u suppose to see a tv clear across the room from your relaxing bed. The fire wouldn't light for nothing. Tried for an hour. Breakfast blah. Server GREAT. And friendly.Alarm went off at 10 in the morning around the whole hotel. Tried to get away to relax and that woke me up. False alarm. I'm hoping it's just because of slow season. Also maybe because of the recent shooting. Which is so sad, but maybe has gotten everyone on edge. And maybe they haven't found a decent cook. I'd try in the summer or winter but not again during slow season. I'm a traveling food critic for a east coast magazine that features hidden hole in the wall get aways. I stopped at callahans lodge going south to Sacramento. The rooms where nice and cozy. In the morning I woke and tried breakfast. Very professional server's but I ordered a alpine omelette with Swiss and bacon and tomatoes. I got pizza cheese and burnt egg with greasy hash browns. Ok I got up to leave and glanced over at a mirror facing the kitchen and saw a unkempt young cook listening to rap. Grease pit was what came to mind. I headed out south. On my way back north to Portland I felt sore from travel and remembered callahans had Jacuzzi bath tubs. I stopped and recieved a good rate being a Tuesday. I woke refreshed and decided to try breakfast one more time. I ordered a siskiyou scramble. Omg perfect eggs infused with smoked salmon on top of tomatoes and and English muffins topped with hollandaise. Crisp hash browns!!! Then a tall chef walked up introducing himself as David and that he was new very nice fellow. When he left I heard customers saying how good there food was. One in particular said perfect eggs Benedict and beautiful plates of food. Ok after the friendly front desk reception and the little baby goat. Oh and the awesome food. Was looking forward Thanksgiving dinner at Callahan's. We were seated took 15 minutes to get our drinks, I ordered the Steak, my family had the Thanksgiving dinner. I wasn't asked how I would like it cooked. When we finally got our drinks we had asked for lemon for the water which was served in a rolled up napkin. We then received our salads, and bread which the rolls were I'm pretty sure the $1.99 store special rolls no one ever likes. Our food was nothing to brag about. No one ever came back to check on us no refills. We finished out meals with no drinks. The service was horrible. We were told the kitchen staff had only been there 2 months and the wait staff we had only works twice a year there. NOT GOOD. If you are having a holiday special you should have staff that can handle it. It was very over priced for what we got, and the worst service I've ever had. I will never be back read more

Callahan's Lodge is a oasis for me and my family. With parents in Northern California (we live in the Willamette Valley), it is a great place to meet half-way. We love the recreation opportunities at Mt. Ashland, just a short drive, for skiing and snowshoeing. It is also a great place to stay when visiting the Ashland Shakespeare Festival. Or, when we just want a place to escape our crazy lives; they have all that we need: a delicious restaurant, relaxing atmosphere and extremely comfortable rooms. For us the bonus of all of this, we can bring our black lab! We just came back from the Lodge this past Sunday and had a fantastic time night skiing and snowshoeing. The staff at Callahan's was great and we enjoyed relaxing by the fireplace eating our amazing room service meal...all after a fun day in the snow.
