I can't believe I haven't reviewed this place yet. OK well let me just say I was raised in New Orleans and have have been to more Po Boy shops in my life than I could possible count. I was amazed... seriously floored that Calliope's completely met my expectations as far as authenticity is concerned. The restaurant itself is in a convenient, accessible, strip in a not so amazing part of town but I've never seen anything that would raise concern or cause me to clutch my bag walking in and out. If you're scary, easily intimidated or not use to culture diversity (yeah right in Houston!) than you might miss out on this hidden gem. I like the look of this place, reminds me of Circle Food Stores in NO from the outside and the inside is decorated cafe style with a couple of TVs. I applaud them for their cleanliness. The dining area was much larger than I expected and comfortable. There is usually one or two other occupied tables when I visit.The bathrooms are always clean and did I mention they have a drive through window on the outside? Yeah... They pretty much covered all basis. Service - the young lady with the NO accent is delightful and extremely helpful with giving recommendations. She put me on the cheese fries with gravy and encouraged me to get the boudain balls. Both were amazing. I have only interacted with other people in the drive thru and they were helpful and accommodating as well. The Food - I am so picky about anything creole or Cajun. Can't help it and I won't apologize for it because once I do spot greatness I will sing their praises. Their GUMBO is amazing. I almost thought I was crazy the roux taste like my families. The consistency was just right, piping hot, the right amount of spice and the chicken in the dish was flavored well. I could go for some right now just thinking about it. I have also had the soft shell crab salad, Po Boy, boudain balls, pie, frozen hurricane, grilled shrimp and fried fish. The crab was cleaned well and they gave a pretty large portion for the price. THE BREAD on the PoBoy is as real as it gets... fresh, soft and flaky. I've never had a Po boy in NO that was NOT flaky. That little similarity and the fact that they use Pattons hot sausage totally warmed my heart. If you have never tried the hot sausage beware. You will get HOOKED. I have a bucket in the freezer right now... I think sausage.. I think Pattons and I was stoked that they stayed true to using this brand. I also really enjoyed their jumbo boudain balls and dipping sauce. I only wish I could get seafood boudain balls. This place gets 5 stars for their food, service, consistency and quality. I have generally come there for the po-boys but today I order crawfish. I was very specific when I called my order over the phone. I asked for regular Louisiana crawfish with no juice at all. Crawfish only! Instead I got a ton of juice and 3 potatoes inside of my crawfish. And it was extremely spicy and I was unable to eat the crawfish. I was so disappointed and dug out the crawfish to see how much was in there and was even more upset. At 8.99 a Lb you should give your customers what they ask for. Woohoo I am the duchess of Calliope's!! And with good reason, because I eat here more than is normal. In my defense, it's really good food and it's literally a 1.5 minute drive from my house! Service is always great here. Always. The sweet lady who works the counter knows me by name now (um, duh, I'm the duchess), and she even knows that whenever I get an order of boudin balls to-go, that it's for my brother. A nice attitude from a server is always appreciated, but the fact that she cared to remember our names and orders was really awesome. On to the food. Let's start with the po-boys, what they're known for. The baguette they serve it on practically makes the sandwich. It's crispy and crackly on the outside, and soft and chewy on the inside! The perfect casing for such a good sandwich. As for the filling, I usually stick with fried shrimp, fried catfish, or the fried oyster, all of which have my seal of approval. I find myself ordering the fried catfish more than the others though. And quick tip, when you're ordering, replace the mayo on the sandwich with their spicy tartar sauce. It adds a new depth of flavor and gives it a little kick. Also, they have habanero ketchup on the counter, so if you're a fan of spicy foods, I recommend putting some of this sauce on your sandwich but be careful, it's really spicy! The boudin balls, the other star of the show, are to die for. My brother gets an order of these now instead of a sandwich. Boudin balls are basically sausage-and-rice hushpuppies, and they are so good. Don't knock 'em until you try 'em. Even if I'm horribly full after my sandwich, I have to have at least one or two of these with the spicy tartar sauce. They're so creamy and tasty. At $3.99 for four boudin balls, it seems pretty steep, but they're worth it. Coming from Miss Stingy, that's saying something. The prices depend on the size of the sandwich you order, and the meat you decide to fill it with. Soft shell crab is the most expensive, as is reasonable, and I believe the fried shrimp is the cheapest. Whichever way you go, it's still a reasonably priced meal. As for the sizes of the sandwiches, a small (the smallest size they offer) is enough for me to share with my mom or a girlfriend and it's enough. So ladies, don't overestimate yourself unless you consider yourself a black hole (girls who eat and eat and eat and stay stick thin). This used to be a place with good food at a good price, Now after today's sampling, I find it extremely mediocre. The grilled catfish was fresh but they killed it with way too much salt! The recipe for chicken and seafood gumbo that I used to love was changed from a flour based roux to corn starch base; YUK!! Thick and gross. The green side salad I had could have been great but along with the fresh green leaf lettuce was wilted, over their prime tomatoes. I was pleasantly surprised to find that they now have grilled Catfish and Whiting Po-boys (as well as the fried variety). Stick with the fries or seasoned fries. They were ordinary but crispy and thick. The gravy and rice was not bad but a little heavy. The fish was really fresh but the fried oysters were so amazing (large and fresh)! The gumbo was a bit spicy but I loved how they had tons of sausage and oysters inside. We were on that side of town and popped in on a Saturday evening around 2 pm. Husband and I had 2 lb. garlic butter, mild of broil crawfish, a fried shrimp po-boy, and a large mixed gumbo. We were so glad to have found this gem! We didn't wait too long for our order and we savored every bit. Up to when you walk in you can smell the cajun spices in the air!
