Our first time on Maui and the Calypso came highly recommended by our friends. As brand new snorkelers we were both excited and a little apprehensive about this adventure. Well, we couldn't have had a better experience! The crew was absolutely awesome. It was very obvious that safety is their number one concern. From the thorough briefings to the lifeguards in the water, my young family felt comfortable the entire time. The breakfast was good (eggs, pastries, juices etc) and the boat was clean and comfortable. It's huge! It never felt crowded even though it was a sold out voyage. The bathrooms were clean and easily accessible. I can't speak for the snorkel gear because we rented our own gear for our entire stay on Maui. The boat has several ladders and there was very little waiting to enter or exit the water. Molokini Crater was amazing. As someone new to snorkeling, I couldn't have asked for a more spectacular view. Saw several different types of fish in crystal clear water. I would guess more experienced snorkelers could find the Crater mundane and the large amount of people in the water with you annoying but I certainly didn't. After snorkeling with my kids, we took advantage of the 15 foot platform used to jump into the water. We also enjoyed the large slide on the front of the boat. We could have easily stayed at the Crater all day! Our second stop, Turtle Town, was fine. The water here was more green and murky compared to the Crater. The sky became overcast and the visibility was just ok. We still were able to see several turtles and enjoyed our time here. Lunch was served on the drive back to port and it was quite good. Pulled pork and teriyaki chicken. $2 cocktails. Not too shabby! The Calypso was an amazing experience from beginning to end. And hey, breakfast, lunch, a beautiful boat ride, and snorkeling for $130?!?! It also might be the best value on Maui. To the Captain and crew of the Calypso........thank you! We really enjoyed our time on the calypso! Great, friendly staff. Clean bathrooms, safe environment for newbies, and good light lunch. The staff were very accommodating to our 2 small babies. They made us feel extremely welcomed and did not exclude our kids. They allowed us to keep the babies cool by putting their feet in the ocean. It was an amazing experience. We took the morning snorkeling trip to Molokini and Turtle Town and were amazed at how smoothly everything went. Getting a boat full of people of all ages, shapes and sizes their gear and into and out of the water without a hitch (twice) was no easy feat, but the crew had this process down to a science. Plenty of five star reviews out there proclaiming how flawless their experience was, but how hard is it to deliver a great experience when every relevant condition cooperates? Answer: Not very. But when our prepaid group of eight encountered a ticking snafu it looked, until the last moment, that two of our group were going to be left on the dock. The ticketing issue ultimately resolved, and that could easily have been the end of the story. But from that moment forward every single staff member from Captain to the cleanup crew went the extra mile to make sure each and every person in my group had an over-the-top experience. It's an old service standard one rarely encounters in today's turn-n-burn marketplace -- if something goes wrong you (1) take responsibility, (2) fix it, then (3) go above and beyond. Well done, Calypso. If you've read this far I'll share one more observation which might be helpful -- if you've got a small group with specific goals or expectations you'll probably be looking at smaller boats with more specialized itineraries. But if your group looks anything like mine typically does (our clan of eight had people from three different mainland states, three generations, two people with a propensity for motion sickness, and the full spectrum of skill sets), the Calypso is the hands down best choice on Maui. I typically book Maui every fifteen months (so I'm always there a different season), and am now in my fourth (gulp!) decade of doing so. I always try to find something new there, but it's nice to have a handful of reliable go-to activities for mt ever changing array of travel companions. Calypso saves me from even having to think about who to book for a snorkeling trip to Molokini (just as I never have to think about who to book for my Maui scuba excursions -- Ed Robinson's outfit). This was one of my favorite things we did on our recent trip to Maui. The prices are excellent for what you get. The boat is clean, the staff is super friendly and knowledgeable. Their number one job besides safety is to make sure you have a great time! We bought a ticket that includes a nice little breakfast and lunch, they have staff on the boat that will take pictures of you and your family (this is a separate business and fee) it was a wonderful experience and we will definitely do it again next time. read more

The trip was amazing! The crew was so much fun and the water was clearer then any trip I have had before. Also we visited the best reefs I have seen. Marley took some amazing shots of me that will forever help memorialize the trip for me, he guided us to all the turtles and just had an awesome energy. From all the tours we did on Maui this one is on the top! The crew was amazing, they made sure everything runs smoothly, they were fun and entertaining. The length of the trip was just right, and the boat was great. I'm surprised that the food was decent as well, which is usually not the case on half day tours, and the crew made sure everyone is hydrated, because it was a really hot day. The crew was friendly, unfortunately we paid for both locations and got stuck at the crater the entire time, unable to see the turtles. The best part of the tour were the 2 dollar mai tais. I paid 40 dollars to rent an underwater camera that only worked for 10 minutes. The 40 dollars included the picture package, (they were suppose to download the pics I took from the SD card and email them to me in 3 days) I never received them!! I called the place and left messages and till yet no calm back!! From all the snorkling choices, dont use this place. They will RIP you off! Had an awesome time snorkeling at Molokini Crater and Turtle Town with Calypso. Before booking with them, I had shortlisted 3-4 other tours but I guess I made the right decision by booking with Calypso. We took the morning tour. Calypso had about 6-8 crew members on the boat and they all were super friendly and very helpful throughout the tour. The boat was stocked with fruits, juices and coffee for breakfast. And they had good lunch options too (including vegetarian pastas). Now to the best part of the tour: Snorkeling at Molokini was the best experience I've had on my trip. Calypso was the largest boat at the crater amongst 7-8 others. Not only did I enjoy snorkeling at the crater but also enjoyed the slide at the back of the boat and then jumping into the ocean from their board on the middle tier of the boat. The water at turtle town was little murky and I did end up spotting one turtle. All in all we had a wonderful time with Calypso and highly recommend taking their tours especially considering the fact that they have probably the largest boat with a couple of slides and jumping deck, very friendly crew members, good food options etc. read more

This Jersey Girl appreciated all this 1/2 day snorkel cruise had to offer: fantastic food, wonderful Mai Tais (thanks to Tony from Jersey), any snorkel gear you may have forgotten, and a top notch crew for my family of 5. One Love tat guy helped my youngest back to the boat when she'd had sunblock dripping into her eyes which I applied. Girl Power was strong on the boat whether she was pulling in the anchor or helping comfort my child who wasn't keen on snorkeling in the crater in the middle of the ocean & suggested the snorkel viewing sled. read more

The crew was great that's the 2 stars, the snorkeling experience a zero. Food just ok at best but we were there for the snorkeling not the food. We had been on Maui for about 10 days and had done some snorkeling at many of the south Maui beaches which was great. The only reason we spent $500 for our family of four was to snorkel at Molokini. Unfortunately The Calypso didn't go there due to what they told us was too rough water. Not their fault and appreciate putting safety first but a total disappointment nonetheless. Where they took us you can get to for free. Turtle town and La Parouse Bay. My son 13. who is the biggest fan of snorkeling said they shouldn't be allowed to advertise this as a Molokini snorkeling trip when they themselves don't know if they can go there on any given day. I'm sure all the fine print covers them but look at the ads and it is all about Molokini. Buyers beware this is not a definite or maybe even a probable Molokini snorkeling trip in the winter when waters can be rough. Again the crew is great, love safety first but if you are doing this thinking you will go to Molokini be prepared that you won't go there and will snorkel just offshore in places you can drive to and access easily for free. read more

This was a great boat, friendly crew, plenty of food and drink as promised, easy to get in and out of the boat to snorkel and swim. The water slide and jumping platform was fun to watch. They had underwater digital cameras to rent and the glass bottom viewing area was really cool. Plenty of places to sit out of the sun, or in it if you prefer. Lots of folks will take you to Molokini to snorkel. We found this company to be all they claimed and then some. read more

This week was our 2nd time aboard The Calypso-and it was awesome AGAIN! The crew was friendly & very knowledgeable! The snorkeling spot & area of Turtle Town we went to were full of beautiful fish, sting rays, eel, sea urchin, & turtles! We saw so many amazing things! The naturalist also shared many facts with us in regards to the creation & maintenance of the coral reefs & some brief history of the Hawaiian islands. I cannot emphasize enough how much I loved this tour. Not just for the snorkeling/snuba, but the staff, and the experience in its entirety. First of all, let's talk about the staff on our boat. I get really motion sick, but this was something we wanted to do really badly so I sucked it up and went. Within minutes of leaving the harbor, I felt unbelievably nauseous. But the crew was so attentive. They noticed my behavior and were immediately asking if I was alright, needed anything, and had helpful tips on hand for motion sickness. Not just one, but three different members came to my side, asked my name, and continued to check back in on me throughout the ride. They were so sweet! It kind of feels like summer camp, when there's amazing rec leaders and everyone feels like a family. To add to their amazing character, they were just unbelievably friendly and funny. One crew member, Tony, had me cracking up regardless of how sick I felt. Another crew member (totally gonna butcher the spelling, forgive me!) Arjuna, was one of the highlights of our trip today. He was the naturalist on our tour, and he's ridiculously smart and knowledgeable of the ocean. I very vaguely described a fish - "long, thing, greyish" and he knew exactly what I was talking about. He was really nice to me and my husband and told us he loved our enthusiasm about snorkeling. Aside from the crew, the tour itself was amazing. Molokini was incredibly beautiful and you can see like 200 feet below. Crystal clear. I've never snorkeled before and this was beyond anything I imagined. After Molokini they took us to turtle town - and it indeed was a town of turtles. It was really amazing. Highly recommend this company and when we return to Maui in the future were 100% going to go again (hopefully next time I'll be more prepared for motion sickness!) We did the dinner cruise on the Calypso on July 18th, our last night in Maui. The service was good, sunset beautiful, food was decent, and the music was nice. My only feedback is that it would be nice to have a "without alcohol" pricing difference. We had 4 people in our party, 2 of them under 21...it would have been nice to have a slight price break since they couldn't drink. We also liked the snorkeling presentation given as we had been snorkeling several times on our trip so hearing more about the fish we saw was nice. Definitely overall a good value and experience! read more

okay, SO. THIS WAS SO FUN. I've never been snorkeling; but this was so easy and beautiful! Didn't see as many turtles as expected and desired but that's not under their control LOL. The fish were beautiful and everywhere. We also saw a stingray! The employees were so kind and the photo guy Adrian really got some cool shots of us underwater. Food was average (who goes on a snorkel adventure for the food though?) OH AND the boat was nice! I definitely recommend!! read more

We went snorkeling with the Calypso crew and the experience was amazing. They were very well organized and efficient getting everyone checked in. They had breakfast, (fruit, bagles, muffins, mini cinnamon rolls, eggs with and without ham, donuts, coffee and oj) a snack, (fresh veggies and ranch dip, ginger ale) and lunch (pulled pork or chicken on a bun with bbq sauce and pineapple slaw). They had everything for their guests as well in case something was forgotten such as dramamine, sunblock, rash guard shirts and underwater cameras for rent. They also had a photographer who took pictures before the snorkeling and was in the water swimming around taking photos underwater of groups and individuals. These pictures were available for purchase on the ride back to the dock. They had all the gear which they distributed on the ride to the two locations- molokini and turtle town. Their staff members are knowledgable about the sea life and would take snorkelers on a "tour" if anyone wanted to join and they would tell you about the sea life seen. We had plenty of time to snorkel before we had to return to the boat for the second location and back to the dock. All the staff were friendly and helpful and I would definitely recommend snorkeling on the Calypso for groups of any size. read more

Crew was welcoming and entertaining. My wife does not know how to swim but with the help of the crew on the boat she snorkeled and forgot about her fear of deep water. We saw plenty of fish and a sea turtle. I rented a camera on the boat and it was a great decision. The pictures are high res and the video clear. I DO NOT recommend calypso for following reasons 1) What they promise, they do not do it - in my tour, they had told 2 snorkeling spots will be covered. Molokini crater and turtle town. But in actuall trip, they spent 2 hours at molokini , then they showed us other side of molokini crater (not for snorkling but just just showing rocks on other side). After wasting time, they started journey back to harbor. They did not even bother to tell us that we are not going to turtle town which we were very excited about. (We had to go and ask to them) They simply told us we are not going there today. I was expecting them to be honest and substitute the plan with some other spots with snorkeling and not with sight-seeing. why would we pay $260 for two ppl just to do snorkeling at one spot and do sight-seeing? 2) This is overpriced. They charged us $128 per person (They said they accept only cash ) $128 for just molokini was too high and unfair 3) Using this boat as platform to rent wet-suites, gears and sell t-shirts On the boat, instead of talking more about nature and molokini and snorkeling, captain kept on advertising renting wet-suits from them (which were un-necessary) instead of spending more time on distributing snorkeling gears, crew members were moving around with calypso t-shirts to sell . Many people on cruise had not received snorkeling gears even when we reached molokini read more

UPDATE: An unsolicited message was received from the management wanting to make amends for our experience. They went over and above with their customer service. This might have been a great trip if we would have gotten to go to the crater but didn't because of choppy waters. They took us to turtle town which we could have gotten to by land then another spot close to big beach. Not too impressed. Way too many people crowding each other too! Alright here's the deal. I love nature and get that she is more unpredictable than a US presidential election. However, when I am dropping almost 200.00$ dollars to go experience nature, I expect the company to at least be honest about her acting up. My boyfriend and I went snorkeling on an exceptionally windy day. We arrived to learn that the smaller boat I booked was no longer going out and we were "upgraded" to the Calypso. Bad start. I originally booked with a smaller boat for a reason... less people. I also didn't feel like spending money on food I can't eat due to having celiac. Nonetheless. Without explanation or notification ahead of time we were magically upgraded to a bigger boat that left an hour later than the one we were supposed to go on... pretty annoying, since we could have slept longer. But no big deal because we are going out to turtle town and the crater in the ocean .. cool! Until they told us we couldn't go to turtle town but we would be going to our next destination, which was supposed to be Molokini. Instead we ended up right off the coast where we were camping the night before ...huh??? There was no communication on what was going on and when we tried to ask one of the guides he just changed the subject. The snorkeling was fine and everyone working did a good job of taking care of the guests but there is no way I would have spent 160.00 dollars snorkeling where we went. They should have offered an option of either a partial refund or a chance to do an expedition with them again on a nicer day depending on your travel plans. Instead, they took us right off the shore to two places I could have swam to without any communication of why we weren't able to go to Molokini. Like I said, I get this isn't their fault and I'm sure I signed some agreement saying they don't give refunds due to nature's unpredictability, but it was pretty disappointing we weren't able to go to the original locations and I think that a company centered around customer satisfaction would have offered a partial refund or a chance to go back out with them on a nicer day free of charge. Crew was attentive and the snorkeling was neat, but it was not what I signed up for. read more

Our snorkel trip to Molokini aboard the Calypso was THE BEST EXCURSION EVER!!! My husband is an experienced ocean swimmer and surfer and said this was some of the best snorkeling he's done. The captain and crew were fun and engaging, super knowledgeable and made sure everyone was well taken care of. Breakfast and lunch are included. There's lots of equipment for people to use while snorkeling at two different spots. The boat also has two slides! You'll see lots of different fish, Hawaiian green turtles, and if you go at the right time of year (winter, mid-December thru February) you'll see humpback whales along the way! Really great time. The boat is large so there are a lot of people but it's not cramped. There is seating for everyone with a table to enjoy the abundance of food provided. Staff was very helpful and accommodating. The three of us had never been snorkeling in deep water before so we were a little apprehensive but the staff was very helpful. They are there to answer your questions and assist with getting in the water. Plenty of stairs getting in and out of the boat so if you want to take your time getting in the water you are not holding anyone else up. I researched quite a few companies doing the same tour and happy we chose Calypso. I would highly recommend this tour. read more

On a night when the wind was blowing so hard you felt you could fall over. This boat didn't disappoint! We sat on the covered deck with a table to eat on. Which was worth not having to eat our our lap. The ride ended up being ok. I was able to have wine and not spill my cookies. Dinner is buffet with very enjoyable food. I had fish and hubby had lobster. You could scoop as much as your plate could hold. The sunset was awesome. Total experience was a 9. Weather was the only damper. read more

I went on the trip to Molokini Crater and Turtle town with my sister and her husband. The Captain and the staff were great they very informative and gave us all great information, and the boat was very smooth. I would recommend a snorkel trip with Calypso we went on a Saturday and saw 7 humpback whales, too. The food was great and it was an enjoyable experience for all. How utterly disappointing. The food was mediocre and we did not watch the whales even though it is on the brochure. False advertising! We were ripped off. We also did not see any turtles and we could not use the slides. In addition, we started feeling motion sickness near the end and we had to go to the second floor every time to check in. We booked this snorkeling trip as one of our activities for our honeymoon in Maui. The boat crew was incredible. Very nice and welcoming. Also helpful when you needed them to be. The boat is new and very nice. Comfortable seating with plenty of room. As far as the snorkeling locations, they were good. But there wasn't as much sea life activity as we were expecting.
