I think this is my new favorite bar in SF. We were looking for a place to have a cocktail and bite to eat. I Yelped a while before coming upon The Mortimer. Bonus, it was only a two minute walk from the Warwick hotel where we were staying. Luis is a craft cocktail magician. Who would thunk that you could put butternut squash in a cocktail and it not only works, but is also one of the tastiest drinks I've ever had. I had the club sandwich for dinner and it was so simple, but such perfection. The Mortimer is a nice casual and relaxed space. Not the least bit pretentious. I could have hung out all night. I'm going to stay at the Adagio next time I'm in town just so I have easy access to The Mortimer. Enjoy! read more

I was meeting up a few friends for dinner and we had time to kill. Decided to check out the happy hour specials at The Mortimer. I arrived first on Thursday, April 11th around 5:45pm. I found a four top in the corner which ended up being the perfect size for the additional three who joined me later. Happy Hour: Daily 4-6pm *moscow mule: vodka, ginger beer, lime ($7) x2 *whisky sour: whisky, lemon, sugar, bitters ($7) *schrimsaw: pilsner ($5) They have a small HH menu with some apps, cocktails, beer, and wine. We went for the drinks above. I wanted something refreshing so I got the mule. I'm normally into spirit forward drinks, so this was on the lighter side. But I didn't mind as I wanted to ease into the night. The space itself is brightly light and not too crowded. I didn't have a hard time finding a table. Very chill if you just want to have a low key after work drink. And if you want some snacks, they had fries, guacamole, and deviled eggs, meatballs, and wings, ranging from $4-$8. Luis' reputation precedes him. Extremely approachable, attentive and amazing bartender who makes his own speciality cocktails. His cocktails span a variety of liquors and flavor profiles, and from what I hear he changes up the menu and experiments frequently. You will not be disappointed--even if you don't know what to decide. Luis truly cares about your experience and will offer to remake or replace your cocktail if it doesn't meet your approval (though I haven't had anything from Luis that I didn't enjoy). I enjoy bourbon and whiskey, and a few of Luis' creations plays upon the smoky and savory flavors by adding a few crispy serrano pepper chips as a complement. For the sweeter drinks, the ice cubes he uses has strawberry and mint frozen inlays. Very creative and adds to the sensory enjoyment. Even gave us samples of his custom infusions which complemented our drinks to round out a perfectly pleasant nightcap. Would go out of my way if i'm back in town. read more

Super slow service but a good spot near the Curran Theater for a preshow happy hour of comfort food selections and cocktails. The wings were delicious in a dry rub, the garlic fries were next level minced garlic which I love, and the chips and guacamole were fresh and made on site. Would love to try their other dishes as well as the meatballs and fish tacos looked like great options as well. Located on the first floor of the Hotel Adagio, I arrived here late on a Friday night and stopped in for a drink and a bite to eat. I went with the Buffalo chicken sliders and fries. The sliders had just the right amount of spice. The bun was fresh and the slaw was a nice touch. The fries appeared to be hand cut and tasted fresh, which I always appreciate. Try the banana ketchup just for fun. Weird concept, but interesting. The happy hour from 4-7 only has 2 cocktail options ($7 each). If Sacred is bartending, order the gimlet. Deliciously refreshing. Was visting San Francisco with my mom, just for fun and stayed at the Hotel Adagio for a few nights. Two of the nights we decided to grab a drink here and I'm very happy we did. The Old Fashioned here is THE BEST I've ever had. The first night we didn't get to see how it was made, but the second night we did and that experience in and of itself was worth 5 stars. The drink is fantastic. My mom got a glass of wine each night and was pleased (I don't remember what she got though). We did not try any of the food besides the fries which were much to my satisfaction extremely garlic-y. Pretty sure I still could taste garlic in the back of my throat after 24 hours but the fries were well worth it. read more

My wife and I always enjoy staying at the Hotel Adagio and beginning or ending our evening at The Mortimer. After our most recent experience, I can say we could spend our whole evening at The Mortimer. The drinks and service are absolutely amazing in large part due to the bartender Luis. His drinks are a true experience and a departure from standard hotel bar blandness. He's crafted drinks with butternut squash (and yes, it's really good) to themes from Harry Potter (the Goblet of Fire, a nod to the show playing at the Curran Theater a couple blocks away). He even gives a sneak peak at future concoctions like the Bananahattan, a bananas twist on the Manhattan that has a surprise ingredient you'd never guess. We not only enjoyed the amazing drinks, but the mixology lessons he also provided. He's a true treasure and talent. We look forward to our evening at The Mortimer, more amazing drinks and Luis. read more

Prices were a little high for happy hour then what I'm used to back home, but it may be the norm here. During happy hour we paid $16 for a cocktail which is really high for a happy hour price to me. I've been going to bars in the hotels as of late and these bars in hotels don't disappoint. It's of modern decor and quite nice that one gets your own space. I was in my bubble next to a pillar for some seclusion and faced in front of the sport's TV channel. Golden State Warriors' game was on and it was nice to hideout without the crowd in a popular bar. Sometimes it's just good to getaway from the rowdiness and enjoy the pleasure of game on, I suppose some small talks while at it, drinks and some things to munch on too. read more

Awoke late from exhausting day, found very few "good" restaurants open after 830 pm in Union Square area. The Mortimer was literally down the street and did not disappoint! I stayed in one night and just had dinner at the bar while staying here. The bartenders were good, and made delicious drinks. I had the caesar salad, which was a good portion and delicious. I saw another table have a purple drink so I asked the bartender to make one for me. It was a french 75, with a specific kind of purple gin. This drink is everything. So good! So good I had to have more than one! The one downfall to drinking at this bar is that the lobby restroom was under construction, so going to the room to use the restroom was quite a pest. I let the bartender know this, and he actually gave me a drink to compensate. It kind of potentiated the problem, but I really appreciated the service recovery. The drinks were a bit pricey, but very much worth the money. They make excellent cocktails. The Mortimer raises the standard for a hotel bar. read more

The Mortimer, previously Bar Adagio has been completely transformed into what I would call the BEST NEW hotel bar Union Square has to offer, and possibly all of San Francisco. The new decor is clean and edgy, the staff is friendly and helpful, the food is superior and the drinks on the cocktail list sound and taste delicious. I've been coming here for two years and my girlfriends and I have never been disappointed. We've thrown birthdays here, had large dinner parties, had drinks after work and Frank, along with the rest of the staff in the bar have proven time and time again what great service looks like! The real thing that will be bringing me back to not only SF, but specifically Hotel Adagio, is Luis and the drinks he's created. I've never met such a great bartender. He has only been behind that bar for about two months and he not only made his own drink menu, but creates the simple syrups needed for the drinks. And the drinks are spectacular. I suggest trying the as many as you can, even the ones you wouldn't think to try! Luis is a creative genius, don't ever miss out on his amazing creations. My daughter, Wesley Straton, writes on bars and bartenders; I have been to highly rated bars all over the world in her company. I am always looking for a truly new and tantalizing cocktail to tell her about. I hit cocktail gold in this bar. Luis Ramirez has been running this bar for less than a year but he created an extensive cocktail menu that was worth going through one by one. The first I ordered was Bananahattan. I don't really like Bananas but I had heard Luis makes all his own syrups and infusions so I felt it would tell me about his skill. I found his skill is phenomenal but does not surpass his passion for satisfying the curious palate or his dedication to personal service. When he realized he did not have bananas behind the bar and could not get any from the Adagio's kitchen; he ran a busboy down to a local tienda to get some. I only waited 5 additional minutes for my very crafty cocktail. I had never ate caramelized banana before but now I wanted to cover a flan with them and serve it to the queen. And the cocktail its self was not banana forward at all, the pinot noir syrup was like a fine sherry, the bigalet china china was immediately transferred to my shopping list. Luis is a Cocktail artiste (with the final e standing for Excellence). Bartender hall of fame. And in less than a year he has made 3 of these menus and shared his expertise and encouragement for experimentation to his coworkers. As much as it might seem I have said, it is not the half of it. We came to San Francisco on vacation, and we decided to eat at odd times during the day. For dinner, we kept wanting to eat late. There aren't a ton of places open that late (at least their kitchens aren't). That was surprising, but we did find this spot on Yelp. We noticed it was located in a hotel, but our options were kind of limited. Decided there wasn't much to lose, so we went there. It was a nice spot. Nice bar area, nice tables set up throughout the restaurant. Sports on the TVs and music playing in the background (although there was also music playing in the hotel lobby at a louder level, so they mixed together... and that was a bit odd). Anyway, we ordered some wine to start off. We drank some of the best wine on this trip, and we had some really nice wine here at this restaurant as well. As for food, we had garlic fries and a cheese board. Yes, not a normal dinner, but these are both things we like. We had eaten throughout the day, so we decided to just get appetizers. The fries tasted very well, and the cheese board was delightful. We were able to try local cheeses that we had wanted to try elsewhere earlier in the day. These cheeses were awesome. The ambiance was nice, but the biggest thumbs up from me is the fact that they serve food until 11 pm. Great place to come if you're looking for late night dining. read more

Such a great place to just kick back and wind down from the day. The decor reminds me of modern day Morocco. Rich colors with a modern twist. Everyone working the line were just cool peeps. I truly didn't want to leave but we had many other spots to hit up this evening. We enjoyed this bar so much, we're thinking of staying at the hotel for our next trip. Ya know... I keep getting warned about how bad The Tenderloin area is but I just don't get it. I mean, jeez.... I live in downtown LA. I know the crackheads by name. My first yelp review is at my hotel bar where I have earned the title of "regular" from the evening mixologist. I am about halfway through a month long stay here at Hotel Adagio, and I am thoroughly enjoying it. The drinks here are excellent. Cocktails are very well made, great whiskey selection, and the like. This is expected at a place like this. Nothing is really over the top, but it won't disappoint either. I have only had a couple dinners here. I have had the filet mignon (awesome), and the bourbon chicken (slightly above average). The filet mignon is my favorite dish here, and one of the best I have ever had. It is drizzled with a lobster butter that gives it an unexplainable character that will blow your mind. It is also reasonably priced for what it is. I have had a lot of filets from places such as Alexander's, Flemings, Mortons, etc, and this is one of my favorites so far. Being that I am not typically a filet kind of guy, however, you may want to take my opinion with a grain of salt. The atmosphere of The Mortimer fits in well with the boutique hotel the place is situated in. The crowd fits as well: You will mostly find a bunch of young to middle aged professionals dressed in business casual with a suit or two mixed in. Noise is medium; you can easily carry a conversation with a group of 4-5, depending where you sit. There are 2 TVs that I have only seen sports on, and they are muted. The music in the background is pleasant and blends well into the ambiance. The Mortimer would not be an appropriate meeting place for a group larger than 4-5 unless you use the regular dining area just past the elevators. This room is mostly empty in the evenings, so you could have a large dinner here but I would suggest going elsewhere since large groups typically require a large menu, which this place does not provide. The speed of service is inconsistent. I am a very patient person so I do not find it too bothersome. If you are NOT ok with watching the only bartender chat with someone across the bar for 5+ minutes and not even acknowledge you, and you are not the type to speak up, then this place is probably not for you. If you are the type to walk around the bar and get some attention, you will receive fast service. Me personally, I'm not in a hurry since this is my home at the moment so I don't have anywhere more important to be. I'm definitely the type to speak up when I need to and I know that I could get service when I want it, hence, only losing 1 star rather than 2 for such offenses. read more

She has created this amazing concoction that is like drinking the caramelized top of a creme brulee. Yeah, it's tastes as crazy as it sounds. I feel sorry for all my future bartenders because whatever you try to do from here on out probably won't impress me now that I've had whatever the hell that drink is called. Oh, and what really sucks? She's gorgeous and the nicest person! I just want to take her home with me and make her my new bff. What a bar! I live a block away from the Mortimer Bar and often pass by and look inside. People always seem so elegant and relaxed, having a nice time sipping their fancy cocktails or wine. I decided to go in tonight with a friend and WOW was my experience good! Our server was Jason, who was super-friendly and fun throughout the whole experience! We both decided the best martini on the list was the La Bella Vita so we ordered two of those. EXCELLENT! I ordered the Wagyu Sliders and, at the suggestion of Jason, opted for a side of fries as well. When the food came it was the WRONG entree! It was the Filet Mignon Skewers, which I had eyed earlier and really wanted to try! Just as they were set down the mistake was noticed. Jason came back after a minute and offered them to us on the house, as the kitchen made a mistake. We politely refused, as we didn't want to overeat, but he urged me to try just one (you get three per order). I tried and it was HEAVEN IN MY MOUTH! Then the sliders and fries came. The sliders were OUT OF THE WORLD AWESOME! The fries were fries, but better than most places serve them and not a disappointment at all! For dessert, we had to try the Banana Split. It was the least impressive, but still quite nice! Maybe too much whipped cream? Im still pondering why it took me so long to try this place. I initially saw this place while walking to Jones Bar a couple months back. The decor was what caught my eye so yesterday while I was trying to kill time I stopped in for a cocktail. The bar is rather small but of modern design. The TVs are awkwardly placed given this pillar that sits right in front of them but other than that, no complaints. The staff was friendly, knowledgeable, and can make a mean cocktail. I had the "Grounds for Divorce" which was ironic given yesterday was Valentines Day. The drink was superb to say the least. Definitely a new favorite. I spent the rest of my time talking sports with the bartender and his boss. Down to earth guys who really know how to take care of their customers. I will absolutely be making another appearance here. Do yourself a favor and stop in for a drink sometime. I promise you wont be disappointed. read more
