Here I was again, Limping into my beloved Shell station. I had hit a large raccoon on my drive to work. I had pulled over to assess damage with my phone "flashlight." As I tried putting my hand up to pull broken plastic out, I had visions of a "maimed and not-yet-dead wild animal chomping my hand off. No alarm lights flashing, I ran to my Campus Shell to see Chris, Alysia, and sweet Pedro. And again, I was greeted with smiles and a jovial, " What did you hit this time?" I explained, asked him to "band-aid" me up as it was close to Thanksgiving. Then I got the call. Uggghhh Damage was too much, had to call insurance. For 3 weeks my car was out of commission. It took 2 weeks just to get the insurance adjuster out. Chris handled it all, kept me informed, and had the adjuster lengthen my contract with rental car agency. We proceeded to the garage to ask for air for our bike tire and we were firmly told no even though there was an available hose inside the service garage. Positives: I'm sure we have all dreaded having to walk into a service shop to ask for help. The unknown of wondering if the the staff is going to try and pull a fast one or take advantage of your limited knowledge in automobile mechanics always loomed in the back of my mind; probably because it has happened more often than not. Having a nail embedded in the tread of my rear, passenger tire, I needed it plugged and repaired. I went to another "unnamed" tire location and they told me it was unrepairable, but wanted me to but four new sets of tires! However, the Campus Shell Station off of Fair Oaks Blvd. is truly your "friendly neighborhood service center". Outstanding service, customer care, friendly, and willing to help! What a great place! My Honda Civic's undercarriage cover (who knew there even was such a thing??) had come loose and dragged on the ground and I couldn't find anyone who could fix it. I pulled into Campus Shell Service and in about seven seconds Chris had removed the old beat-up one and ordered a new one. It was going to take about 30 days but somehow the heavens opened and one arrived four days later. I came in and they did the work right away. The price was reasonable and the work was impeccable. This a friendly, competent, reasonably priced, clean and tidy service center with absolutely wonderful people working at it. The owners take pride in their business and welcome their clientele. Failed me for smog due to "monitors not set". Funny, I looked at my owners manual and confirmed that my monitors were set. Went to my local shop the next day and passed no problems and only spent 30 dollars total for smog no issues. I spent twice the amount here and only did so because it's close to my work and I wanted to get it done. My local shop even checked my monitors for me before doing it to make sure I didn't waste my time, I didn't even ask them to do that. I wouldn't waste my time here for a smog they over charge and rip you off for something so simple that can be checked right off the bat. Same as those guys that will fail you for a visual inspection but continue to run the whole smog check when they know you won't pass. Shady read more

If you are in need of an honest and reputable shop, look no further than Campus Shell on University and Fair Oaks. I was hesitating to take my vehicle in for service since it is old and the AAA technician could not determine the problem. One of their repair shops wanted over $200 to diagnose since it is a european vehicle so I went to the trusty guys at Campus Shell who have been wonderful in the past and they were able to take care of the issue at a reasonable rate. They even offered to come pick me up which was not close but I declined. It is nice to know their are honest and caring automotive technicians out there. I will continue to use their services in the future. read more

I recently went in for a handful of work done on my subaru. I primarily keep coming back here for a few reasons: -they are very eager to help with a good attitude -great location if you live in east sac -they work on your car immediately if you make an appointment (unlike when I take it to my subaru dealership) -they tell you in detail what they are doing or recommend and why and they do so without being an alarmist I also have taken my brother's Toyota truck in here for work and they did a great job. If I knew how to change my own brakes and oil, I'd do it, but since I don't I'll continue going here for their quality customer service. Stopped here really early in the morning to fill up and was happy with the number of pumps. The station is kept clean and it's easy to get to. When I went to grab the squeegee to wash the windshields, I couldn't find any paper towels in any of the holders on my side. Finally I found one that was stocked. I couldn't imagine trying to walk around for some when it's busy, so hopefully they get better on keeping paper towels at the ready for customers. read more

I just drove in to get gas and as I was about to get out one of the associates offer to pump gas. I was very surprised usually you only get associates to pump gas in your car in Oregon. Anyways the gentlemen was very nice and polite and explained to me that the owner of this particular gas station at this location is from Oregon. Go figure! I give this place all stars because of great service and the place very clean and well maintained. Most of all how kind and polite the associate was. I used to love this gas station. When I was in college, my friend pumped gas and did oil changes there. The owner, a guy named John, was the old-fashioned kind of service station owner. Little adjustments -- no charge. Repairs were always preceded by a discussion of what caused the problem and the cheapest way to fix it. So, when my check engine light went on awhile back, I went here. I could bore you with a long story, but know this: Fix my leaking tire with a cheap plug: $25. Elsewhere: $7-10. These guys also tried to charge me $425 for a sensor which I discovered later is less than $100 list price from the Toyota DEALER, the highest-priced place to get parts. They also tried to charge me more than 3x the labor of the Pep boys, supposedly the big bad corporate competition. This is now a clip joint where you need to hang on to your wallet. read more

Absolutely terrible. I was a valued customer when Brian was the manager last year. Recently, however, I have been very dissatisfied with my services here at Campus Shell. Vic, who I just found out today is no longer in charge, screwed me over big time after charging me for services that he did not complete. After asking for my refund (over a month ago) I have yet to get any answers about where my money is. I feel so taken advantage of. Not only are they taking advantage of me being a female, but also the fact that I'm a college student with limited funds. So disappointed. I will NEVER be coming back. read more

I can't give any stars after my unfortunate encounter with the Shell station near the corner of Fair Oaks and University Ave. in Sacramento. When you break down you are vunerable and have to trust that you will be treated fairly. Overcharged for both labor and parts my bill was $788 for installing a new fuel pump for a Chevy Malibu. After checking around a $500 charge would have been a good price, a premium price. I know that I have to pay a premium price, and the work was done in a day, and I am down the road with a car repaired, BUT I paid for $460 for a part that retail at the dealer was $290, and 3 hrs. work @ $108/hr when they only worked 2 hr. on the car. The additional hour was the inspection/diagnosis which took at most 15 minutes. So, that's it: overcharged for labor and parts. That's University Shell. read more

UPDATE. gm called me and offered me refund. says its now legal and considerate and encouraged to let customer know about on board engine lights leading to inevitable failure. Earlier this week, my '63 Caddy wouldn't start and I was forced to find a new service center when I found out from previous provider they no longer serviced older vehicles. AAA recommended Campus Shell and I contacted Gavin to verify he and his team had experience with cars similar to mine and to ensure they could park it indoors if necessary to keep overnight. He assured me he could handle the repair and the car would be safe. Tow company dropped it off at noon and Gavin contacted me by 2:00 within 3 hours letting me know he had found the electrical problem and completed the repair. Car was ready to be picked up that afternoon and price was fair. Was very impressed with Gavin and am happy to have found my go-to service center for future repairs. read more

Great service station. They have an island attendent during the garage hours, so if u need help with anything they're happy to help. I do not trust anyone else with my car for repairs. The service writer provides all the information and recommendations I need to make a good informed decision. Brian is the most friendly, honest, hard-working guy and I only trust him with my cars. He has gone above and beyond for me (a doula with an inconsistent schedule and an even more inconsistent income stream) to get me the help I needed with my car, a very necessary part of my employment. He also always seems to find "little" things he surprises me with; he re-glued an epoxy crow to the top of my volvo that had fallen off, and fixed my gas and temp gauges in my buick just to be nice. It's hard to find someone you trust with car repairs. Well, no more. Gavin and his team are great. My check engine light came on and I brought my car to them because it's close to work. Upon diagnosis they found a special extended warranty for an issue my car had and recommended I take it to the dealership to be repaired under warranty. The dealership said, "..while there is a recall on this part for the 2011 Equinox, it doesn't apply to your vehicle VIN. Your car wasn't built in the right timeframe even though you're experiencing the same problem. We can fix it but it won't be covered under warranty. Your mechanic cannot see the specific VIN rules, just the GM dealers." I got a quote from the dealership and from Gavin at Shell and Gavin was about $150 less expensive. They got the job and Gavin walked me through the process of sending my invoice back to Chevy to be reimbursed because of the similar problems with similar vehicles.
