Very quaint, adorable place in a really good location. Lots to walk to, easy access to Rehoboth Beach. The rooms are adorable and kept up really nice. The best part is they are dog friendly!! The owners are accommodating and friendly. Can't wait to go back!

    Expired Snacks

PART 1 - Gotta say we REALLY wanted to love this place but I/we have been coming to RB for over 25 years and have stayed in 11 of the hotels in RB. This was the first time at the Canalside Inn and unfortunately, we will be booking elsewhere next time. To start, the majority of snacks that were placed in a basket in the room and for sale (VERY pricey) were outdated....some of the snacks it seems were in the room PRE-COVID. The popcorn which costs $3.00 expired in August of 2020, the majority of the other overpriced snacks had also expired months before. There was dust on all of the surfaces (luckily, we had some cleaning supplies and took it upon ourselves to dust the room prior to unpacking). We found the cover to the light over the bed in the night stand drawer, and the light bulb was out. Didn't the Room Attendant see the cover in the draw (or the expired dates on the snacks) when she cleaned? Maybe not since the inside of the draw was also filled with dust. The shower has a rain shower style head and is therefore installed on the ceiling, because of the way the nozzle is positioned (cannot be adjusted because of location) and the 2-3-inch gap between the shower floor and very flimsy shower curtain (see pic), the entire bathroom floor gets wet and VERY slippery and DANGEROUS when you use the shower. Additionally, there is a sign over the sink stating that if the towels are stained the guest will be charged??? Really??? Never saw this in any other hotel in Rehoboth or anywhere else for that matter. When I am staying in a room that costs $250+ I don't want to have to worry that if I get a stain on a towel from a spill or whatever, that I am going to have to pay for the towel. I would think that a stained towel is the COST OF DOING BUSINESS. There is one OVERSIZED chair with stained upholstery in a very small room. If there are 2 people one has no place to sit, and there is no table or desk in case you had to do work or wanted to eat in the room. There wasn't a microwave (or coffee maker) in the room, although the pictures on the website show a microwave in the standard king room. We checked in on Friday and on Saturday we received a text from the hotel asking about our stay. We relayed the information above via text and within 5 minutes the owner of the hotel called my cell phone and attempted to address each issue. He did apologize about the snacks, said it was an oversight and he would speak to housekeeping, and said they could be swapped out. No thanks not paying $3.00 for a bag of popcorn that cost less than $1.50 at the Royal Farms. This wasn't a onetime oversight...I would bet the cost of my stay that every room was exactly the same, with the majority of snacks being expired....NO ATTENTION TO DETAIL. The owner NEVER addressed the shower. As for the furniture, I was told that the hotel was taking a minimalist approach because of COVID and that the owners would prefer that guests eat in the outside seating area. Also, the reason there is only one chair in the room, is because the owners found that guests would move the furniture and hurt themselves in the process. REALLY??? First of all, it was cold out, but REGARDLESS if a PAYING GUEST wants to bring food back from a restaurant and eat a warm meal in their room, instead of having to be uncomfortable in the cold and have the food get cold outside, they should be able to do that (what happens if it's raining?) IT IS SOMETHING THAT CAN BE DONE AT ANY OTHER HOTEL at the beach. If they did not want people to eat in the room and there was no space for that, it should have been STIPULATED prior to making the reservation. Possibly in the same place where they should have mentioned there were no longer microwaves in the room AS ADVERTISED/PICTURED As for the excuse about guests hurting themselves while moving the furniture...I would be more worried about the shower and slippery DANGEROUS bathroom floor.... which again was NEVER addressed. Lastly, the minimalist approach/COVID was the excuse for not having a microwave in the room. However, it would be just as easy to disinfect and wipe down the microwave as it is for them to (supposedly) clean the remote control for the TV (which is not covered in "changeable plastic" for protection during COVID, as was the case in 2 other hotels where we have stayed). If the room is NOT AS ADVERTISED/PICTURED, then let the guest know that before the reservation is made AND charge a rate that is less than PEAK/PRIME/NORMAL!!!! THAT IS NOT THE END! On Sunday morning we received a text asking us to rate the stay...I gave it a 2 out of 5. In less than 5 minutes BEFORE 9:30 IN THE MORNING, my wife and I hear a VERY LOUD/STERN knock on the door. After asking who it was, we hear "It's the owner I want to have a discussion with you about your rating" needless to say it was quite disturbing. When we declined, he persisted to knock and ask again! SEE NEXT REVIEW PART2 FROM MERYL M FOR CONCLUSION

This place would have been nice. Too bad they started drilling something right beneath our room at 9 in the morning. This annoyance went on all morning. It made it impossible to sleep and now I'll be walking around all day tired and with a headache. Also they do not give you the wifi password at check in. In fact, the guy barely said 2 words a The book said the password was on the tv in the lobby which it was not. When we complained about the drilling the guy at the desk didn't even seem to care. He barely even said anything to us and said that they wouldn't be drilling the next day. Also the towel hanging up in the bathroom had a full face of makeup in it. A big black smudge and foundation stain. The toilet back was also stained yellow.

My husband had a long first week at a new job and I wanted to take him to the beach to just relax and unwind. I found Canalside Inn after some serious searching. I wanted the luxury of a hotel with the convenience of a bed & breakfast. Canalside had both in spades. We loved the contemporary vibe (why does every other beachside place look like it's trying to be Key West in the 80's?), the great owners and beautiful amenities--common living room, communal table kitchen with free breakfast, bikes for rent, hot tub & pool and more. The price was perfect and its only a mile from the beach. Perfect excuse to walk into town with your car secure but just far enough away to keep back from the hustle & bustle of the boardwalk and surrounding neighborhood. We stayed one night, and after spending a day on the beach decided to stay another, but alas, the place was already full for the rest of weekend. But no worries, we're coming back! Soon.

Nice, quiet inn about a mile from the center of Rehoboth Avenue, the area's main shopping & tourist drag. While labeled an "inn", it's a bit more of a hotel feel and that isn't so bad. Nicely appointed, very clean rooms. mostly with a white 'beach' motif, tastefully decorated. The 'canal side' upstairs has a porch with two chairs outside of each room giving you a chance to sit in the quiet late afternoons and look out over the sleepy little waterway. Great stay for gay couples of hetero adults, but not for kids. Please, don't ruin the atmosphere of this place by bringing children under 18. The owners are nice guys, a bit quiet but I suppose since they see so many people come and go, they aren't always eager to form personal rapports with all their guests. There's a large living room downstairs, again very nicely decorated and comfortable with two flat screen HD tvs, lots of lounging furniture, books, etc.. A room with a king-sized bed ran us $150 per night. A bit high, even for a beach tourist town in the late summer season. I've traveled quite a bit so I think I have a pretty accurate idea of fair hotel/inn/B&B pricing. Still, a nice place, close enough to walk, (or preferably drive or bike) to the beach.

I'm so glad to have discovered the Canalside Inn! It's exactly what we needed for our babymoon- clean, comfortable, and quiet! Our room was small but I loved it since it had the essentials such as a comfy bed, tv, fridge, and a shared balcony/corridor with 2 chairs. A complimentary continental breakfast is provided in the downstairs lounge with standard fare like bagels, muffins, cereal, and oatmeal. This is a great place to hang out in the evenings since they have 2 large televisions, one which has a DVD player. There's a decent selection of movies to choose from, as well as books and magazines. The microwave and ice machine are also down here. This was a great place to stay off-season due to the very reasonable price and cool weather but keep in mind that it's about a mile from the boardwalk so in the summer you'll either have to drive in or get hot and tired lugging beach bags and chairs.

One of Elsie's favorite spots was right across the street, overlooking the canal!

We stayed here for a short family trip with our toddler and enjoyed that proximity. The hotel has on site parking which is convenient and included in the room cost. It also has a few spots reserved right near the lobby entrance for check in we didn't know about in advance but you do now. Due to the proximity to the beach, we were able to get on the beach very early sans crowds, see the sunrise, go get breakfast in the hotel's restaurant, walk part of the Boardwalk, then go right back to the our room to clean up and take a nap. The convenience where your money is going if you opt to stay here. I would say that the front desk service is just ok, esp when you're paying pretty handsomely to stay here. For instance, the hotel advertises that you can reserve umbrella/chairs with a 10% voucher so I called from our room, spoke to the same male receptionist twice then the next day made our way to the receptionists in the lobby. The lady I spoke with proceeded to ask me if who I spoke with. I normally try to remember names but this particular one had not identified himself and I had made the last minute judgement call not to ask. When I asked why that mattered, she said we were supposed to pick up vouchers in the morning. Nowhere does it say that nor did the male receptionist mention this the two times I called. Nor did I understand why that mattered since we only wanted to use the umbrella/chair for less than two hours late in the day. Finally, she proceeded to look for the umbrella and chair vouchers. Even the box labeled "chairs" only contained umbrella vouchers. So basically what was supposed to be a 2 minute endeavor turned into a much longer one. To top it all off, no one was manning the umbrella/chair stand at either of the two kiosks we tried so after we spent a short time on the beach we asked for a refund with the lobby receptionist on our way back in. That employee we spoke with offered zero apology for our inconvenience or anything like that. He gave us an absolutely deadpan look then said he'd refund the charge. I'm glad he did but again, for the price you're paying for these rooms, you'd expect a bit more customer service. There's a vending machine in the lobby for which you can use your credit card to buy stuff like bottled water, wipes, sunscreen but we found a nearby convenience store (RB convenience on Rehobeth Beach) within pretty easy walking distance where the water was in larger quantities and cheaper. The restaurant and pool on site are convenient although the pool was out of towels a few hours before they closed and those were not restocked although I did see an employee bringing over towel disposal bin for used towels. Overall, the price you're paying here is for proximity and convenience, not for the customer service. The interior is a bit dated (hallway carpets could use some freshening, etc). Our room did have a microwave and mini fridge although the website only advertised it having a mini fridge. I recommend staying here if proximity and convenience are what you prioritize.

We got a spot there and never moved the car until we checked out. It was actually preferrable to us to have it below ground and protected from the elements - and also from non-guests who might otherwise vandalize. Our room - oceanview - was absolutely oceanview. The only bummer being we overlooked the pool - which was always PACKED during the day (and noisy). However, we did have a lovely view of the beach. That worked out great as our last evening they had some life guard competitions on the beach and we could see it better from our balcony (2nd floor) than we could from the boardwalk. The staff was very friendly and helpful, especially when we managed to lock ourselves out of the room. We were able to rent the beach chairs and umbrella through the for a 10% discount. We got passes we presented to the actual vendors. I highly recommend you go down before 8:30 am and get the vouchers to stand in line at a vendor tent at 8:30 when they open - to avoid long waits and get a good spot on the beach. The room itself was fine. We had 2 double beds. Linens were clean but the towels were not the best. They looked new but were not soft. Room had all the basics - large fridge, microwave, coffee machine (K cup) and OK sized TV with pretty good stations. They have a restaurant on site as well as a little coffee shop. Nothing is free (no complimentary breakfast). We packed our own stuff so we were all set The room was pretty quiet and fine for sleep. I think the only downside was the price. Costs are so much higher this year or maybe here - compared to what I paid prior years for other beach boardwalk oceanview rooms. The boardwalk was decent. A fair number of classy restaurants for us to pick from. Prices were high but perhaps that's the area. They had cheap food, too - as well as souvenir and beach shops. All in all, the hotel was exactly what we needed. A good location on the beach with everything we needed without having to drive anywhere. I found this place to be better than some of the reviews I read prior to booking over the winter. But we usually find places acceptable and more like the positive feedback than the scathing reviews. I recommend this place and would most likely stay here again - as opposed to the limited other options we saw in the area. However, this is not our favorite boardwalk so we won't be back. Our favorite is Wildwood so that's we're were headed next now that we've tried all boardwalk beaches.

The house contains rooms with private bathrooms and rooms on a floor with shared bathrooms. I was very hesitant to book at first when I read that I would have to "share" a bathroom. We just returned home after a 4 night stay here and we were more than satisfied! Tom, the house owner, is super kind, personable and hospitable. His other workers (Rayvn and Chris) are also so helpful and always get you what you need. You can request to have breakfast in the morning from a menu selection and they bring you your food out at the time you request to have it ready for you . Tom always came and checked up on us wherever we were sitting during breakfast to chat about random things, show us his puppy and ask us if we wanted more food or needed anything. We would love to try a room with a private bathroom (it was so booked up when we tried to get one initially so book way in advance!) I love that the beach was only a 4 minute walk and access to the main streets was only an alley walk away from the house. No complaints at all after this stay. The interior of the house smells super good and is clean. Highly recommend staying here! Overall 5/5 stars and we will definitely be back next year

Because our priority was being as close to the beach as possible, we decided to take the gamble considering we're reasonable people who know what beach-town/beach-side hotels tend to be (a little weather-worn, ya know?). Upon entering the lobby, I was instantly impressed! It was clean, inviting, and smelled incredible (giving more of a luxury hotel vibe). Check in was a breeze, pulling into the driveway and garage for parking. Huge positive is having parking included for hotel guests and you're given a parking pass to hang on your rear view mirror during your stay. The front desk staff was very welcoming and friendly, making sure we had all the information for our stay and we were able to head right to our room. Upon arriving to our floor, you can tell the outer spaces are weather-worn (as expected), but our room was spacious with two queen beds, large dresser with deep drawers, mini fridge, plenty of space for luggage and rack for hangers, balcony with ample space and partial ocean view, small toilet/shower space but the double sink was a huge plus! From our whole stay, I think the only negative was that there was no shower liner in the shower so - after all four of us came back from the beach and showered all that sand off, the bathroom floor was soaked which I was worried about the kids slipping and falling, so we had to use extra towels to clean that up quickly. The room was clean and tidy with warm lighting options throughout. Our floor had a vending and ice machine right by the elevator which was clutch to keep us hydrated and cool our drinks during hot days. Remember, housekeeping service is only available upon request - pro tip: request it the night before the day you'd like your room cleaned, or latest by noon the day-of. I appreciated that we let them know too late one day but they called to let us know they could have someone come while we went out for dinner, which was thoughtful. The lobby area was clutch for us, especially with the restroom because our kids always had to go whether we were heading out or heading back in and "couldn't wait." There's also an Emblem coffee machine (which can make cappuccinos, French vanilla coffee, hot chocolates and more) and water fountain. During the day, they keep the lobby coffee table stocked with oranges or snacks which is a nice touch for grab and go. The beautiful murals lining the breezeway between the lobby and the boardwalk are stunning and I lovedddd the rocking chairs at the end of the breezeway; the perfect seat to watch the sunrise/sunset or people watch! Our family agrees that the biggest positive to the Henlopen is its proximity to the water and the boardwalk action! Children were putting their hands under the door and playing with the locks. Although it was off season you could hear every little sound from your neighbors. The upside was that I could also hear the roar of the ocean waves crashing on the beach. There are little to no amenities beyond a coffee machine in the lobby and a bowl of oranges. Parking was convenient, although a tight fit. I imagine it would be challenging for any tall or long vehicles but suited my purposes. The light bulbs at the vanity were flashing rapidly whenever I used the light fixture and the rooms had only a light duvet cover so I depended on the small heater for warmth. The bathroom was very small and opening the door made it challenging to access. It was a struggle for my Father, who had an identical room a few doors down. Cleaning is only by request and strangely I received a mystery $100 charge on my credit card a full week after checkout. I appreciated the convenience of being on the boardwalk as the primary reason to choose the Henlopen to stay for the week.

The room was ready on time and exactly what we booked. The room was clean and exactly as pictured in the photos. We booked the ocean front room so that we could sleep to the sound of the waves and watch the sunrise from bed. The beds were super comfortable and I slept like a baby. The Nespresso machine in the room was fantastic. They also had coffee in the lobby and a full complementary breakfast. The lobby and deck areas are great places to hang out. They offer free beach chairs to borrow for the beach. We also enjoyed the lounge chairs by the pool. We enjoyed the music in the outside areas. They have happy hour in the lobby at 5pm with draft beer and hot hors d'oeuvres. Don't forget to stop back at 8pm for warm cookies. Once we parked the car, we never moved it again. This hotel is a short walking distance from the Dewey Brewing Company, Starboard, and other restaurants. We saw dolphins from our balcony and I found sea glass on the beach right in front of the hotel. Insider tips: They do not have an elevator. Book a dune view room on the first floor with an expanded private deck if you cannot walk up steps. Leave the kids at home - they don't have sofa beds or roll-a-way beds.
