The steak is amazing! And the fries are pretty good. I saw the "burgers" and it looked worse than anything I've ever seen considered a burger before in my life. What a drastic difference between the look of that and the steak! I didn't try it though so maybe what looked like a gas station microwave burger situation tastes amazing. The bread comes not actually cut all the way through so you have to pull it apart and it's a hassle. Could come warm instead of cold (like fridge cold) too, but it was alright. I ordered the duck stack with breakfast potatoes and a drip coffee. My wife and I shared the meal and I would recommend others do the same. The Duck Stack is one of the richest, most delicious, and unique breakfasts I have ordered. If you're not used to eating rich foods it might not sit well with you as it didn't with my wife. I found it to be a perfect mix of sweet and savory. The duck gravy/sausage and the syrup tasted much better than it sounds. I didn't shell out the extra $15 for the added seared Foie Gras so I can't comment on that. I don't know if the Breakfast Potatoes were fried in duck fat or not but they were soooo crispy, it was awesome. I had high hopes for this restaurant based on all the reviews, but was met with much disappointment. ----- Omelette: goat cheese, fines herbs ($7). Probably the saddest omelet we have ever seen, and it costs a whopping $7. Even an orange slice is about half its size! I can buy myself a dozen eggs and half a pound of cheese at my local grocery store for less than that. ----- French Toast: cadillac oranges, walnuts, crème anglaise ($8). The waiter had told us this dish is more than enough for one person and has three large slices of toast. Instead, it was just one slice of toast cut up into three strips. Definitely not filling enough for one person. ----- Loaded Breakfast Potatoes: chorizo, manchego, green onions ($8). A few of the potato were overcooked and a couple even charred. ----- Duck Stack: pancakes, duck gravy, tabasco onions, duck egg ($16). This is the only saving grace. I liked the savory gravy and it was rather filling. Although the two pancakes were both overcooked on one side. ----- Nothing tasted awful, but was overall mediocre and overpriced. If the flavor of the dishes were out of the world, then the portion sizes for their price would have been justified. I've tried their duck stack and breakfast potatoes here, and it didn't disappoint me. There was so much flavors and textures in pancakes and gravy. I really enjoyed it. The breakfast potatoes were so crispy and with great flavors. The food was quite heavy and filling for me, so I would recommend to come here for brunch/lunch if you don't plan to eat too much for breakfast. Cocktails were all tasty. Service was also very prompt and friendly. One star subtracted because of the space- seating is very tight, we were extremely close to the couple next to us. When you walk into the entrance, the waiting area is very small as well. A woman using a wheelchair entered and it was extremely difficult for her to get into the restaurant and maneuver through the entrance. I imagine walkers or other assistive devices would be equally challenging to use in this space. I'd love to see them make the space more accessible. read more

Brunch done right! Welcomed and seated right away with all areas to choose from (by 10am on Saturday it started to get full) the tables, bar, or near the open kitchen. Menu is diverse with sweet and savory options as well as ordering a light meal or a heavy meal too. Prices match various budgets too and for kids too My friend and I sat at the kitchen counter to see the kitchen area and took a little while to decide. Ultimately my friend got the shrimp toast benedict and I got the english muffin w/ prosciutto + oeufs en mayonnaise. The benedict was more of a fried patty of shrimp with the egg on top. It was good as the small portion I tried had shrimp flavor and a little spice from a sauce that the fred shrimp was on- like a spicy mayo. The oeufs en mayonnaise was light but had a lot of flavor from the textures and flavors of the bacon, roe, and syrup. The english muffin and prosciutto were great too, but the star was the red eye gravy! Service was prompt and friendly throughout, even when leaving. The fact that menus, silverware, napkins, and water are available right away when seated is helpful. Hooks for bar style seating is appreciated and the clean bathroom too (with baby changing table) though dimly lit. KenScale: 8.0/10 One of the towering figures in Portland dining scene is Gabriel Rucker who has won countless accolades with his fine-dining French restaurant Le Pigeon. When I was searching for restaurants to visit with my wife Jun for our Oregon trip, I debated whether to include Le Pigeon but thought the new project from chef Rucker that opened last year and had been considered one of the best new restaurants in the city as well as the country, sounded more interesting, with a "French meets diner" theme. I picked our visit to Canard on the first day, the same day that we had a very satisfying brunch at Tasty n Alder. Because of the amount of fairly rich food we had for brunch, Jun and I were not quite as hungry by the time we finished our tour around Portland. Still, you've got to march through when you are on vacation, right? While we probably didn't try as many dishes as we should've had, and there were some misses, Canard still offered a very nice dinner experience. The menu at Canard is certainly more meat-centric and really makes you feel you are at an American diner than a casual French bistro. Any meal at the restaurant must start with oeufs en mayaonnaise, a couple of eggs with trout roe, bacon, roasted garlic and smoked maple on top. The complexity of ingredients on top of the eggs was quite wonderful and made both of us regain some of our appetites. Having felt guilty with all the calories we consumed at brunch, Jun and I ordered a cabbage and strawberry salad dish with creamy lovage dressing and feta. I was hoping for something extra from the salad, but it was a rather straightforward dish whose greatest value is perhaps to make you feel less bad about eating all the meat dishes here. Jun was feeling too guilty to get a hand of a mini-steam burger with pickles, onion and mustard; I ordered one anyway. It was a decent slider at $6 each. The biggest miss at Canard was the garlic fries. As Jun is always partial to fries, we ordered one with gouda cheese, chermoula and green goddess dressing. The fries were quite nicely done in terms of crispiness but the flavor was way too much for both of us. One of the reasons I picked Canard for our trip was to try their already famous duck stack, a dish available all day (Canard had been getting a lot of attention as a breakfast/lunch destination too) and consisting of pancakes, duck gravy, tabasco onions and duck egg. This pile of rich and fatty food may scare you at first, but it really started to grow on me as I eat more and more of it. The way the kitchen thought of this combination was quite remarkable, and Jun was equally impressed and couldn't stop digging this pure decadence. For dessert, don't skip the Paris-Brest. It may not look that much different from any other French pastry you've had before, but the trick used by the kitchen to make this dish extra special is the use of burnt honey cream that gave a really delightful flavor. Canard doesn't take reservations, but if you head over for an early dinner time like we did, you probably don't have to wait. We were lucky to be seated at the counter in front of kitchen where all the cooking was happening. There is full bar with an extensive wine list around France and Oregon (we split a bottle of 2005 pinot noir from Oregon that worked very well with our meal). The free-flowing vibe of the dining space really feeds off of the energy coming from the kitchen and the dining space makes for a great venue for casual meals with friends and family. I certainly wish we had visited Canard when we were starving, not after a big brunch meal on the same day. Still, I give a lot of credit to Canard for reinventing French food with the ethos of classic American cooking and think it's definitely a restaurant worth stopping by when you live or visit Portland. read more

Canard, its sister restaurants, and chef owner Gabriel Rucker all have excellent press which was why I initially wanted to try it, but for me it transcended all that. Service and the chefs on the line were SO friendly and warm. Sounds cheesy to say, but it kind of felt like being welcomed back into the fold by old friends. Beyond that, we looooved every dish we tried: the duck stack, French toast, oeufs en mayonaise, and shrimp toast Benny. Admittedly that's a lot of food for two people, but we finished all of it in one sitting, it was that good. I'd absolutely return and honestly just fire the whole menu. From the creative minds of Gabriel Rucker and Andrew Fortgang (the same team behind Portland's French restaurant standouts Le Pigeon and Little Bird), Canard is a little bit more casual than their other restaurants. After waiting for 40 minutes on a Saturday night, my party of 3 ordered almost the whole left side of the menu. The Tastiest: +Albacore Tartare ($16): edamame guac, chili-citrus relish, wonton chips. Edamame guac and Albacore with citrus notes are everything you would want from a dish. +Foie Gras Dumplings ($18): pear, chestnut, bacon, foie gras. Kind of on the pricey side for 3 dumplings, but you can taste everything in this. The slightly nutty filling matched with the dumpling is genius. +Fried Chicken Wings ($16): truffle ranch, truffle honey +Crispy Calamari Banh Mi ($12): liver mousse toast, jalapeño, chili mayo. The liver mousse toast got kind of lost in the mix with the calamari but once we cut into it more, it was a standout dish. +Garlic Fries ($6): Gouda, chermoula, green goddess - The green goddess dressing was a little on the sweet side, but it was not bad. Weird Tasting: +Pork & Eel Terrine ($10): giardiniera, avocado, unagi sauce, miso mustard - Terrines are usually good but this felt like such a mismatch. None of these ingredients really meshed together. The avocado and unagi sauce helped cut the pork flavor, but we wish we tasted more eel. +Duck Stack ($16 + $15 for the foie gras): pancakes, duck gravy, tabasco onions, duck egg. The foie gras was small/over priced. The sweetness of the duck gravy and syrup were a great combo, but also did not mesh well with the reset of the ingredients. +Tropical Caesar Salad ($12) romaine, macadamia bread crumb, pineapple. A no from me. The pineapple mixed with caesar is a combo I wish never happened. I kept eating it because I love salads, but it should either be a sweet or completely savory dish and it seemed like it was a different bite every time. I know I probably sound basic for enjoying the Tartare so much, but it was honestly one of the best things I had in Portland! The food started out really strong, but some of the flavor profiles and sauces were a little too bold for my group's liking and the meal kind of snowballed from the first few dishes. The portions are meant to be served tapas style, but I highly suggest getting 1 or 2 dishes more than the individuals in your party. I came with a group of 3 and we ordered 8 items, but I think 2 large dishes and 2 smaller portions would have been just fine! Also, there seemed to be a band playing in the upstairs venue, so it was quite loud, but that didn't ruin our meal. Even though we enjoyed half the dishes, we still loved our time here and would probably come back and order the dishes we liked. The wine list is also really extensive and fairly priced per bottle. Fluffy pancakes with duck gravy, tobasco onions, and a perfectly runny sunny-side up duck egg... if you're up for it you can even add seared foie gras! Along with this we also ordered the oeuf en mayonnaise (pretty much their version of deviled eggs), loaded potatoes, and the ham & jam sandwich. All of the food was delicious and had unique & rich flavors. The plates are small and shareable so you're able to try a variety of items. Staff is nice and service was great! I was disappointed in Canard. After reading so many raving reviews, I made a reservation and ordered the duck stack and duck frites. Both were just okay. The Duck Frites were very bland. I actually couldn't finish it. The duck stack was pretty good, very filling. We also got the oeufs, which were just deviled eggs, and they were amazing! The service was alright, I think the waiter probably had a long/crummy day, he was not the nicest. But, it was still good service. Overall, it was pricey and I was underwhelmed. Great menu with seasonal and rotating new items along with consistent favorites! I wish they could put the Smokey beef sandwich on the permanent menu! This was a play on Arby's roast beef! The quality of the beef melted in my mouth! The homemade cheese sauce was also incredible! Many people love the steam burgers here. The sweet roll and sweet pickle relish is definitely delicious! I tried the duck stack because everyone should try the duck stack. It was heavy and delicious. I love that the duck is a gravy, it makes each bite manageable as opposed to when you get chicken and waffles and they feel like two separate meals that happen to be colocated. We went to Canard for a nightcap last month, after a splendid dinner at Le Pigeon next door. Canard--French for "duck"--is Le Pigeon's sister restaurant, a more casual spot with a full bar and a cocktail list. We walked in at around 10:00 on the Monday night of a three-day weekend. The place was still bustling, but we were able to grab two seats without issue, at a counter against the wall by the door, with a view of the street and the rainy night outside. The restaurant was nice and cozy, and low-key enough to drop in just for drinks, at least at that hour. Service was friendly and prompt. There were eight cocktails on the menu, a short list with some interesting options, including a foie gras bourbon cocktail I would've gotten if I hadn't just eaten the foie profiteroles next door. We got the September Affair and the Fruits of Conquest, and both were delicious. The September Affair was a smooth, aromatic mezcal cocktail with Byrrh, L'Afrique vermouth, and lime, served up. The Fruits of Conquest was a warm drink, perfect for a chilly night, made with Laird's Applejack, Amaro CioCiaro, apple cider, lemon, cinnamon, and ginger. We had a lovely time at Canard. I'd recommend it for a round of cocktails, and would like to come back for a meal. It shares DNA with Le Pigeon, so I'm sure the food is excellent. One of the best meals I've eaten in my entire life. They get packed, and they don't take reservations. You have to come put your name on the list, then have a drink next door or across the street and wait for a text. You'll be fine--it adds to the evening. You walk in and it feels like a casual neighborhood cocktail bar in Paris, or close to that. A few tables here and there, a big wood and brass bar loaded with bottles. There's more seating farther back, but it's not a huge place. It's a long, narrow space. Lots of people having fun (both staff and customer alike). You order bits and bites from a menu that's somewhere between happy hour, tapas, and dinner. There's nothing snacky or thrown-together about any of it. It's all beautifully conceived and executed, and in a couple cases it's quite splurgy for the amount of food you get. I'll happily come back anytime, though. The value comes through with everything e tried. 4 of us tried the biggest assortment of dishes we could think of, and they were universally worth at least several future repeats, and some were among the best dishes we'd ever had. Despite some of us liking some of these better than others on paper, ALL of them came out and dazzled all of us: Oeufs en Mayonnaise, Pork & Eel Terrine, Roasted Marrow Bones, Clam Ceviche Nachos, and Garlic Fries. All of these were rich and explosively flavorful and surprising and interesting. This is the kind of cooking that makes you wonder how the hell people come up with such wonderful ideas that nobody else ever cooked before. The fries were the simplest dish; they were just french fried taters with great seasoning. People must eat 10 plates of these at a time when they come in late night. My buddy's lovely bride made it clear that if anyone else wanted a bite of the Roasted Half Dungeness Crab, they would need to order their own, and she vouched for that dish without hesitation. The real superstar dishes (on a menu packed with them), were the Foie Gras Dumplings. They have unbelievable depth and intensity of flavor. Probably the most shockingly priced dish, but easily worth it. They feature duck, as you'd expect from the name. The Duck Frites and Duck Stack are both worth infinite repeats on future visits. Rich and hearty and satisfying in unexpected ways. The dessert was vanilla ice cream with truffles mixed in, and more truffles shaved over the top. Unbelievable flavors that nobody else I know of even has on he menu, let alone does this well. I can't wait to come back. read more
