Good wine selection. Here are something weird- you pay extra for bread service, but they didn't even bring enough pieces of bread for our whole party of 8. We had to split up pieces of bread- which is really strange for a nice meal. The prices are high, so you expect an elevated menu. There were some things that were good- the lobster mac and cheese, the salads and were lovely. My husband's ribeye with au poivre sauce was fantastic! The filet steak was great. But some of the other items were just good, but not great. The fish of the moment was not seasoned well (and no salt at the table) and there was no sauce that came with it to jazz it up. The shrimp and fish entree was good- but the shrimp were not great. What saved this dish was the green curry sauce that came on the side. My experience with Cane & Canoe so far has been really incredible. I am hesitant to give out 5 star ratings on Yelp, but Cane & Canoe definitely deserves this high rating. We flew in to Maui last night and after a long flight and not so great airplane food, the two course prix fix was incredible and much appreciated. They started us off with a spoonful of tomato gazpacho, which was very refreshing and had a great taste. For my first course, I ordered a Caesar Salad. This is easily one of the best Caesar Salads I have had in my life. The lettuce was very crunchy and fresh tasting. They used a perfect amount of dressing, not too little, but not too much. I love the mini baguettes as croutons, and the Parmesan crisps make it automatically better. This salad had anchovies, which I am not the biggest fan of, but they gave a good amount. My main course was the Kona Kanpachi and Kauai Shrimp. Hands down one of the best dishes I've had in awhile. The star of the show was the fish. It had the most perfect crispy skin and it was cooked perfectly, like it melted in your mouth almost. The shrimp was good, but nothing compared to the fish. The green sauce was actually a curry-like sauce and it was SO GOOD. It went so well with the fish and the rice. To finish it off, we were too full to order dessert, but they brought us over tiramisu truffles, which were so rich and had a hint of coffee taste. We also came the following morning for breakfast. There were so many different options. I didn't take any pictures, but my family ordered the green smoothie, the tofu scramble, eggs two ways, and eggs Benedict. They were all incredible and we were thoroughly satisfied. A pre-breakfast appetizer were these banana bread muffins, which were extremely tasty and had a good texture. I do want to mention that this place is a bit pricey. However, the food tastes wonderful and the portions were very generous. If you're staying on site, it's an extremely convenient location, just steps from where you are staying. The view was great and service was relatively quick. Appetizers were nothing special and the kids didn't even like the the Mac and cheese . Fish of the day was over cooked, dry and flavorless - the 4 people that ordered it didn't finish theirs. The wagyu beef was over seasoned and nothing like the equivalent cut you get in other cities in the states. My favorite restaurant! In HI....Great service and ambiance. We started out with shrimp cocktail that was incredibly fresh and big. The variety of bread they bring you I can make a meal out of that alone! Only complaint was two people at the table wanted the ribeye and they were out. I had the filet and it was very flavorful. Broccolini was prepared very well and one friend had the hassle back potato and wow did it look amazing (a meal on its own) give me the bread, broccolini and huge loaded baked potato and I'd be happy! We've eaten at many high end places over the years, and I've gotta say, Our server Vai, was probably the best server we've ever had. He was very efficient with our orders and was very knowledgeable when it came to food and our wine. He had the best attitude and personality. He really made us feel like family. My husband and one friend both ordered the steak medium rare. Our friend's steak came our perfectly, but my husband's was definitely well done. He mentioned it to our server and she came back a little bit later with a new one, this one barely cooked. At that point the rest of us were basically finished with our entrees so he just ate it.The presentation of the second steak was very minimal - normally a restaurant of this calibre will do a better job even on the second plate. We both walked out of there enjoying the evening - we were with friends, had a very delicious mai tai and wine with dinner and the dessert was good. My husband and I attended an event here out on the patio of Cane & Canoe. With live music playing in the background and comfy chairs, the outdoor patio area is the perfect setting to hang out, have a few drinks, and mingle with the crowd. The evening consisted of us steadily working our way through bites of delicious pupus & the occasional libation. We had the surfing goat cheese tempura, kauai shrimp & grits, ahi sashimi, lamb chops/lollipops, & chicken (curry, maybe?). The goat cheese tempura and shrimp & grits were my favorites of the night! Also, I don't normally like lamb or anything undercooked, but I decided to be adventurous and I have no regrets. The lamb was perfectly tender and seasoned to perfection! We had a great dinner at this restaurant. It is located at a resort so the signage was not very clear, but we found it without too much of a problem. Usually restaurants in resort hotels are just okay, but Cane & Canoe was very, very good. On the plus side, the resort didn't appear to have many guests, so the grounds were quiet and tranquil. The dinning room is open air, so if you don't like excessive air conditioning, this is for you. I usually do not eat much fish unless I know its fresh, so I always over-do it in Hawaii. The fish was some of the best I had on our vacation. When we return to Maui, this will be on our list to return to. That's fine except I hear another couple being told "congratulations." Annoying. We get our table and wait. And wait. And legit wait for our server. When she finally comes we are offered drinks and an explanation. I order avocado crab toast, a virgin drink, and a mojito. Then we wait and wait. She comes back, without our drinks or appetizers, to take our main order. As we place an order for scallops some lady comes up to stop our server to say that they are out of scallops. At 7pm. Still no drinks or apps. When she comes back with our toast and drinks, we canceled our salad order and ate the toast. You would think that the manager would have found out that we had ordered scallops, were unable to get them, and then canceled our order. For a restaurant that is supposed to be so fancy the service was lackluster. A couple that was sat after us by like 15 or 20 minutes had their food delivered the same time as us. Our toast was good. Our drinks were good. No apologies. No congratulations. No management.... but our bill was $50!! No joke. For a piece of toast with avocado and crab on it that took 30 minutes to come out plus two drinks. When we left it was 747pm so that equates to more than $1 a minute to go there. I am totally fine with spending money on a nice dinner but wow. Like wow. If the service had been better i probably wouldn't be as mad. It wasn't though. The 2 stars I gave them is for the view. Normally I do not comment on bread, but we started with some outstanding potato rolls that came with butter and a basil spread. I would have been happy having ten of those rolls. I had the lamb chops medium rare. They were incredible, perhaps best I ever had with a very nice char. The sides were great also, potatoes and a ratatouille type vegetable. For dessert we went with server's recommendation. It was some fried dough with passion fruit and chocolate sauce on the side. It was really nice. Not too chewy, not fishy. Good meaty texture. If you've never had Octopus before, this would be a good one to try. I had the Monchong (the special) for dinner. It was fantastic! It's a white fish.... Light, flavorful and moist. Reminded me a bit like wild trout I sometimes have the opportunity to eat in northern CA. It was served with lightly steamed baby bok choy. So Excellent! My mom had the snapper and my hubby had the mahi mahi. All of us enjoyed our dishes immensely! We also ordered a couple of sides... cauliflower and asparagus. Both were great for sharing and honestly... we didn't need 2 sides... one would have been enough. For dessert, Mom and I shared the Toasted Coconut... it's a drink. SO. GOOD.
