The ambiance is simply amazing - from the architectural design to the Duke memorabilia and decor anchoring the restaurant proper to the beachfront location - to the tiki torches illuminating the outdoor dining adjacent to the public boardwalk - this spot should have you truly thankful to be here. The atmosphere at Dukes was ok, but the food was just not on par with other notable Hawaiian restaurant competitors. We thought we would give it a try again as we were hearing that they have taken steps to improve the quality of their food. We found it's the same offering and disappointing food quality that they have been serving for years... For those that rate Duke's a 4star restaurant, keep going if that's your idea of a premier food, but clearly you haven't experienced what the Maui culinary scene can offer you by settling for such tired, dated and mediocre food quality. Lunch prices are really competitive! Love the ocean front view, the decor, the staff...simple love all of it. This was our first visit to Duke's Beach House, but it won't be our last. Each trip we try to find a new place, this one will be a go to for happy hour and lunch going forward...at least once each visit to Maui. We were celebrating my wife's birthday so they gave us a nice big piece of delicious Kimo's Original Hula Pie after our meal...it was so big we all had plenty and were completely stuffed. Amazing! OK, let's start with the food. My husband and I both ordered the barbecue ribs and chicken plate. It was the best meal we had the entire trip. We also had the hula pie which was so good! There was something wrong with my husband's meal and almost immediately Chloe, being the superstar she is, took it back and got him a new one immediately. Then the manager came out and also apologized. This is probably the best service we have had our entire trip and they were so apologetic for something that really wasn't that big of a deal. Before we got to our table, they had a card waiting for us because it's our anniversary and all of the staff members signed it. We will definitely be back. We stopped into Duke's Beach House for an 11am brunch on a very rainy Maui morning. The weather kept things pretty quiet, and we were seated right away. Service was good overall--friendly and attentive--but nothing especially memorable. We were staying at the Westin and used the guest discount card, which came with a free appetizer. We went with the calamari, and it was a good start to the meal. For our mains, I had the BBQ chicken salad and my wife ordered the fish tacos. Both dishes were tasty and fresh, exactly what you'd hope for at a casual beachside spot. There was a small blip with my salad, but the staff fixed it quickly and without any hassle, which we appreciated. One of our first meals in Maui! We made a reservation for 4 on our first full day and we were seated right away. I would highly recommend making a reservation ahead of time as there were quite a few parties that were waiting. The restaurant is tucked behind a resort so we were able to find guest parking in front of the hotel free of charge. It is located by the water with an amazing beachside view. We ordered the POG and mango slush, both of which were fruity and refreshing. One of the best slushies I've had in awhile. We ordered the rib & chicken plate to share. Both the chicken and ribs were juicy and marinated well. Last but not least, the hula pie was SO DELICIOUS. We had received a complimentary coupon for the hula pie from one of the concierges at the resort, even though we did not stay there! the pie was ice cream with a shave ice texture, making it a perfect treat to end the meal. I had a great evening at Duke's in Lahaina. We made a reservation since it's really popular, and we were seated early by the live ukulele music--perfect sunset vibe. Service was attentive, and the view of the beach was incredible. I had the macadamia-crusted fish, which was absolutely delicious, and we shared a Hula Pie--big portion, really tasty. Everyone else enjoyed their meals, though the calamari was just a bit different from what we expected--thicker, not as crispy. We had the Sautéed Mac Nut & Herb-Crusted Fresh Fish (mahi-mahi) and the banana leaf steam fish (hapu'u hawaiian sea bass) Great flavor and butteriness of the white meat fish and the rice and vegetables went really well with the dishes. We also tried the prime rib that was well seasoned, tender, juicy, and had a good chew. Paird really well with the horseradish. The dessert were DELICIOUS! We have been to Dukes in Waikiki and my bf really wanted to visit Dukes while in Maui. We did not have reservations so we did a walk in. They have open seating for the bar top and bar area. While we were waiting a table actually opened up in the bar so we decided to take it. The bar area offers the bar menu and the full dining menu. I love lava flows and was a bit sad not to see it on the menu. I asked the waitress if they had it and she said they do, but it's not on the menu. My bf ordered a mai tai which he really enjoyed! My lava flow was delicious! Sadly, service just wasn't there... we would've loved to get another drink each, but the waitress never came to check on us. For food we ordered the poke tacos and the pork nachos. The tacos were really good and I would highly recommend. The nachos were good, but over baked. We had pieces that tasted burnt and the cheese was crisp vs gooey. They were hard to eat as they were all stuck together and would easily break due to being overcooked. Overall the food was ok, the place had a great view and great vibe, drinks were good, but it is not worth going out of your way to come and it is overpriced. Stopped in on our first night of vacation! It was the perfect spot to kick off our vacation with yummy drinks and good food and a beautiful view of the ocean. We were seated on the patio overlooking the sunset. As the sun set, they turned on the tikis and live music began, and the ambiance was set! I ordered the furikake ahi steak. It was perfectly seared and plated on rice with a delicious spicy sauce. Our waiter Charles shared that it was his favorite and I was thankful I took his recommendation. We went back again to Duke's Beach House on our last night in Maui. It was crowded on a Monday night. We had a table that was on the path for everyone who was being seated. We did not appreciate that. Again we split a maui sunflower caesar. My husband chose the Seafood risotto. It was very good. I had the Rib and Chicken plate. the ribs were very good, however, the chicken was a bit dry and chewy. The restaurant is right on the beach and I wish we had a better table to enjoy the atmosphere and the live music. We did go back because it was conveniently located at our hotel. We were visiting Maui for a family vacation and we decided to eat at this place as it showed it walking distance from our hotel. We didn't have a reservation which was fine because they were able to seat all 4 of us with no problem. They were also very accommodating when I asked if I could place the stroller for my baby somewhere that's not in the way. They were so sweet and nice!! This restaurant is literally right near the beach, you could walk there after you're done eating. Which is what we did and we were able to catch a beautiful sunset! Just finished our meal this evening and have an update from last year's review: absolutely NO CHANGE from my 5-star review last year! And coincidentally, we even had Hailey as our server again (which made the entire evening!) Tonight, we had multiple appetizers: 1) the Korean sticky ribs were out of this world! VERY meaty, no fat, fall-off-the-bone tender. But you must like heat, because they are smoking hot given the gochujang - - we ended up ordering another. 2) the coconut shrimp and calamari: we ordered one of each, and they were so great we ordered another of each! The pros: the appetizers were awesome The cons: we ended up not ordering dinner But the best part of the evening was Hailey - she is the person you would want to hire as the face of your company's customer service. We did a walk up reservation around 6:15pm on a Monday and inquired about a table outside to watch the sunset. Staff were very nice and said they would try their best but said they have about 55 actual reservations before us for those tables. We were able to just watch the sunset on the beach and got seated around 7pm inside but still had a good beach view. Bula, our waiter was attentive and extremely knowledgeable about the menu and helped me decide between dishes. Drinks: Mai Tai and Spiked Pog Slushie, both were delicious and tasted like they didn't have much alcohol but we both agreed we could feel the alcohol lol. Appetizer: Poke Tacos, were delicious and fresh Entrees: They were unfortunately out of prime rib so we got the sautéed mac nut and herb crusted fresh fish which was delicious and had very flavorful capers. We also got the fish tacos which weren't anything astonishing but still very good. The salsa was perfectly sweet and salty. Dessert: Bula brought us a huge piece of Kiki's Original Hula Pie to celebrate our Anniversary which was complimentary but I would have paid for either way because it was so good. IMHO As we walked down the beach walkway along Ka'anapali Beach, we saw Duke's in the distance and looked at their menu. Even though we had eaten an early breakfast, we decided to see if we could get seated without a reservation. We had absolutely no issues getting a table for four, which was a big surprise. Mark was our funny and happy server, who brought us a Kimo's Grog, $18, and two Ali'i Bloody Mary's, $12 each. Easily the worst meal and service we had on our week in Maui, and we waited close to two hours to have it. Ran out of food and wasn't really even apologetic for it. Server had little personality and front desk felt the same way . I understand they probably get a lot of people complaining but this is a restaurant with $50 entrees, and you have to maintain a high level of on professionalism. Food was average. And the Mai tais tasted watered down and weak, compared to about 5 other places we had been to. Great setting and pie but too much competition. Wow, just wow. From the moment I walked in, the experience was incredible. The hostess greeted me with a birthday card, which was such a thoughtful surprise and set the tone for the whole evening. I felt genuinely welcomed, and our server Jon truly made the night unforgettable. You can always tell when someone loves what they do, and Jon absolutely radiated that. His service was warm, attentive, and personal and he even took the time to chat with us about the local wildlife and the geckos and lizards we'd seen during our stay. Definitely not in the job description, but so appreciated! Now the food *chef's kiss*. I had the Korean sticky ribs and seafood risotto. The ribs had just the right amount of spice and were fall off the bone tender. The risotto was rich and creamy, packed with lobster, scallops, fish and shrimp in a beautiful white wine sauce. The food was good but pricey Haley, our server, was excellent but we arrived and wanted a reservation for 7 and they told us 90 mins but if we wanted we could hang around an area of 8 tables near the bar that were FIRST COME FIRST SERVE so it was up to us to hover over people to grab their table while others were doing the same ( like Black Friday at Walmart) no thanks That was a turn off to us. There should have been a wait list of sorts for that area as well . Don't pit customers against each other for a table. read more
