Went here for Mother's Day as a walk in not realizing we should have made a reservation - we just moved to the area. The staff was very kind and explained that we'd need to wait while reservations were seated first and then ended up seating us at the bar. The restaurant itself was beautifully decorated and furnished, the vibe was great here. The bartenders who were a couple, were very friendly and knowledgeable and we really enjoyed meeting them. The pre set brunch menu had delicious offerings and we chose the biscuits and gravy with a side of poached eggs and the burger with fingerling potatoes. Also got a mimosa board which was delicious, with fruit and 4 different mimosa flavors. We got this with NA champagne and it was still perfect. We were visiting Hendersonville on a winter vacation from Florida and read great reviews of this little downtown spot! The food was fresh with a local flare, ambiance was cozy with couches as seating. If we were in the area, we would recommend it to others! We can't compare it to some of the similar establishments in the area such as Root & Bone or Postero because we didn't have a chance to explore too much, but it held its own in comparison to nice restaurants in South Florida that we've dined at frequently. They seemed pretty strict on reservations, although they weren't crowded on the Friday night that we visited. I'd be sure to book a table ahead if your heart is set on it. read more

We had a wonderful anniversary dinner! We sat at table number 1 just to the right of the door as you walk in and we both sat on the couch facing the inside so we could see the whole restaurant. It's a beautiful place with lots of plants and natural elements. I rarely, rarely write reviews but I just had to for this place. The food was excellent, as was the Unsanctioned Pinot Grigio that I chose. We shared the mushroom strudel for an appetizer (big enough for a meal if you so choose), the swordfish, the shrimp and grits and shared the flourless chocolate cake for dessert. Second visit. First was good. This round the place was a little slow. The fried green tomato app was the best part of the meal. My wife had the grilled salmon which was over cooked and thus dry. I had the pork chop which was also over cooked. The sides were good. For a $180 evening it was underwhelming for my wife's first visit. Claywood has excellent cocktails. We love the Claywood! We were having a small family wedding at The Pretty Place and needed somewhere to gather and eat afterwards (about 30 people). We could not have picked a better place! Carly helped me plan the most delicious menu, the food was phenomenal, the servers catered to our every need, and they even made me a special cake that was not on the menu. We had at the back room to ourselves (the set up was gorgeous, totally my vibe) which was great, because they let us get loud and celebrate as long as we wanted. Last night, we went to Claywood and it was SPECTACULAR!!! The vibe was perfect- live music, busy, very attentive and lovely team and food was fantastic! We come to Hendersonville twice a year, for 20 years, and prob best meal we have had in Hendersonville. We shared smaller plates - gnocchi (best ever had- perfectly cooked large gnocchi with the best homemade pesto and crunchy bacon I will dream about), squash with roasted pecans and popcorn with a squash puree, pork belly cooked perfectly, and shared the beef bolognese that was so flavorful. You could tell every dish was crafted with so much love and thought. For dessert we had a chai crème brûlée with caramel popcorn- wow!! We loved it and was off the beaten path. It was my husband's birthday and they had a note from the chef and birthday card waiting for us. Definitely recommend and can't wait to go back on our next trip!! read more

We dined at Claywood a week ago, and we had an outstanding experience start to finish. The atmosphere is festive and cozy for such a sizable, beautiful space. The waitstaff were attentive, welcoming and knowledgeable, and the food was outstanding. While everything we tasted on the new winter menu was excellent, I must especially shout out the gnocchi starter, fish of the day main dish and desserts (cookie platter and yule log) as being even extra special. I relayed to the owner, chef and staff that we had dined at a certain Michelin star restaurant (within an hour of Hendersonville) in mid-November, and Claywood offered a superior experience all around at a better price point. Chef Tory Bogin personally introduced each dish, giving insight into the inspiration and preparation, which made the experience feel intimate and thoughtful from the very first course. After each introduction, a wine specialist walked us through the wine pairing while a whiskey expert followed with a complementary whiskey description--two completely different perspectives on how the same dish could shine. We found this charming restaurant in Hendersonville quite by accident - a fortunate accident! The ambience is quite charming with brick walls, ceiling beams and plants covering the wall. The space, while not large, is separated into dining spaces to give the illusion of intimacy. The wait staff was attentive and very helpful talking us through the menu, which changes seasonally. We had the onion tart to begin with - it is a must have! Like onion soup in a tart! My friend got the ribs which were tender, juicy and delicious . She also raved over the hasselback potatoes with a chimichurra sauce. I got the fish which was served over corn grits. The fish had a crispy crust, and flaky interior. Next trip to the area, I'm going to make a point of returning to Claywood. read more

We chose the Claywood for celebrating our 50th wedding anniversary. What a great choice we made! They have a wonderful private room in the back to accommodate up to nearly 50 people. They worked closely with us to plan the event (timing, food, beverages, set-up, floral arrangements, etc.). As someone who was raised in Hendersonville, it's always special to see a local spot doing things right--and Claywood really delivers. The food is thoughtful and well-executed across the board. The arancini were crisp with a rich center, the gnocchi were light and fresh, and the pork belly was tender and crispy. The ribs had that perfect smoky finish, and the piadina was a great, shareable option. For dessert, the strawberry roll was bright and executed perfectly. The ice cream was smooth and clean--not overly sweet. Big props to Chef Tory, Tyra, and the team in the kitchen for turning out consistently excellent dishes. Chris was a fantastic server--friendly, attentive, and knew his stuff. And major respect to the owner for creating a space that feels warm, intentional, and genuinely local. I grew up here, and it means a lot to support local businesses that care this much about what they do. An amazing experience! Food was spectacular! A true farm to table experience! Fresh...the chef had actually foraged for the mushroom the day before. The salad ingredients were crisp and scrumptious. Delicious...the dry-aged steak was perfectly prepared and the snapper was both exceptionally fresh and expertly prepared on a bed of risotto. The ambiance was welcoming, open, and quiet. The antique building with massive wood trusses and raw brick walls is further enhanced with velvet couches where the four in our party settled in for a comfortable dinner. Drinks that we ordered at the handsome bar were dispatched to our table. I tried a prickly pear martini. Excellent. Our friends ordered a smoked bourbon speciality and it smelled delicious. We shared the green salad and melon salad and both were excellent. The special of the day was a grilled stripped bass. With two pieces served on a bed of polenta and pickled relish it was adequate to share between two. It was my second time dining there, first time was wonderful. We had the charcuterie that was the best I've ever had anywhere and the beef ribs were delicious as well. We went back tonight and were very disappointed! My husband ordered the duck and I ordered the pork loin. My pork was so dry and tough that I couldn't eat it. It definitely was not a pork loin! My husband said his duck was rubbery and not very flavorful. Service was not great either, had to ask multiple times for things and our food came out at different times. I really like the place and I hope they can get it together! The menu is not extensive and what is on it should have a description of what it is! read more
