I've actually had a pretty variable experience there and I attribute that to their ever changing menu and experimental nature but c'est la vie The service and ambiance are always nice. It's a great place for a date, dinner amongst friends, and dining solo at the bar. I actually think it's a great spot for a martini / cocktail and some oysters before you go somewhere else. I come here a lot for a off menu cheeseburger, and it's solid (4/5) The focaccia was superb. Had that balance of crispness with being fluffy and light. Comes with a balsamic and olive oil dressing but that is superfluous IMO. The oysters were fine. I wish they sourced from around here vs BC. You get some nice oils to add to them on the side. The peppers were such a delightful and tasty snack especially with the Caesar. The seasonal greens were a great accompaniment to the whole chicken. The chicken had this awesome curry flavor to it. I believe it was Malaysian based. It was perfectly moist with a well seasoned and crispy-ish crust. Not pictured, but we also had the pole beans which were seasoned in a tamarind sauce and with Chinese sausage which I think added to the flavor profile of the chicken. What we ordered: Chicken Drumsticks (2 pieces) $13 Seared Tombo Tuna (3 pieces) $21 Pan Roasted King Salmon (4 pieces) $68 I recently dined at Canon in Downtown Sacramento and unfortunately left feeling pretty disappointed, service was mid and food was decent. When we were first seated, our waiter immediately asked what we would like to drink before we even had a chance to look over the menu. We said water was fine. She then mentioned that everything on the menu was shareable, which we took into consideration when deciding what to order. After that, it took quite a while for her to come back to our table. In hindsight, we probably should have taken that as our first sign. When she eventually returned, we ordered two dishes to start: the small plate: tombo tuna and platter: pan roasted king salmon . Since she had specifically told us that everything was shareable, we figured we were ordering an appropriate amount for two people. After taking our order, she commented, "Guess we are having a light dinner, if that's what we are doing tonight." This was honestly confusing and off-putting because we were simply following her own guidance that the dishes were shareable. If an appetizer and a so call entrée/ "platter" wasn't enough, I would have appreciated a recommendation for additional dishes rather than a comment implying that we hadn't ordered enough. She then asked if I wanted a drink, offering lemonade or tea, which I politely declined. We eventually added the drumsticks to our order, and honestly, those ended up being the best thing we ordered. Another major issue was the inconsistency in portion sizes. I had seen photos from other Yelp reviewers, including a photo of the Pan Roasted King Salmon posted just 14 days before our visit, and the portion shown in that photo was noticeably larger than what we were served. The difference was significant enough to be pretty shocking. Overall, the food wasn't necessarily bad, but for the price, I expected more consistent portions and a better dining experience. The combination of the long wait to even take our order, the confusing comments about how much we ordered, and the noticeably smaller portions left a disappointing impression. The highlight of our meal was the drumsticks and the male waiter that she sent over to exchange our plates. He was extremely professional. We wished he was our server! The best food here is probably the bread. Good ambiance and great customer service who checks on you regularly - esp when you are not mid way eating. Appetizers: had the oysters which were $4/pop. Very small and getting Kumamotos from Whole Foods is a better bargain. Seared shashito peppers were also good as their cream sauces paired well. Bread: so far the winner. Main course: Japanese potatoes with cheese wiz.. basically roasted potatoes with your typical cheese can whiz. I wouldn't hype this. Salmon: poached and seared skin side down. Good in my from my viewpoint but sauce doesn't pair too well. Chicken: warm and roasted well. Meat was soft and tender. Michelin star in 2025. You'll get what you often get from a Michelin restaurant: small but very unique and aesthetic tapas-sized dishes at steakhouse entree prices. But the overall experience and the food were both worth the memories. We had the chicken drumsticks that everyone photographs. I recommend these, they're very unique. The best part of our meal was the blistered beans (highly recommend). Our entree was the salmon, which was pretty mediocre. For Caroline's last night in Sacramento, we went to Canon. They had fresh herbs outside the restaurant which was very appropriate for a farm to table restaurant. We smelled some fresh thyme on the way in. Inside the restaurant is very aesthetic. I absolutely loved that their menu showed the glass that the cocktail came in. This is my ideal cocktail menu. For my first beverage of the evening, I had the First born made with tequila, damiana, pineapple, strega, and lemon. It was a perfect cocktail in my opinion. The ingredients all worked so well together. This was a perfect glass choice.  From the quick bites section, the pickles were an obvious choice. There was their take on a traditional pickle. It wasn't super dill forward, but it was a solid pickle. The pickled beets were wonderful. I love beets, and these golden ones were no different. Lastly, the pickled squash that they made in a bread and butter version. It was a subtle bread and butter, which was good because normally I do not like bread and butter. I really enjoyed this plate.  I know a cab isn't normally the wine of choice with fish, but I wanted a cab, so that is what I got. Specifically, the Cabernet Sauvignon from Rama (2020) in Napa Valley. It was a nice glass of wine, but I wish it was in a better glass. read more

Farm to table is honestly not my go to but we chose this place for date night because we had credit card rewards towards it. The establishment was easy to locate, parking was limited and they offered indoor and patio seating. The inside was very loud but modern and cute. We honestly weren't wowd over the selection for entrees so we decided to go with appetizers, cocktails and desserts. The tots were crisp and the mole was a perfect flavor combo. The shrimp beignet was amazing, I could have ate two servings. For cocktails we ordered the "first born" and a classic margarita, both were tasty. And for desserts we chose the honey basque cheesecake (didn't love), 50/50 pot de creme 10/10, and the carrot cake churros (worth trying). My partner and I heard about this place and wanted to give it a shot especially since I had some rewards leftover that would front most of the bill. Finding this place wasn't too difficult but did feel secluded. Parking was a bit of a nightmare since their dedicated parking lot is one way with only 7 spots. The outside street parking is mainly 1 hour max which isn't enough. Walking in, Canon was definitely giving comfort vibes with modern decor all around. I did have a reservation coming in but there were already a few tables readily available for seating on a Thursday evening. My partner and I shared the New York strip steak, cured albacore crudo, and tots especially since they do family style where you can easily grab from. The steak was cooked perfectly medium rare and was decently portioned. Not heavily seasoned but some parts were definitely hard to chew than the others. Other than that, nothing mind blowing. The cured albacore crudo came shredded and even though it was cured, it still smelled fishy. The sweet soy sauce surround the appetizer helps with the overall taste. This was an interesting dish but can't justify the cost per portion ratio. The tots were probably one of the better things I had. Solid crispy and moist texture. The pickled onions and mole made it even better. I would rather choose 2 of these over the cured albacore crudo. Overall, it's great that they have a rotational menu so you could try new things but I can't justify the price point to come back again. At least I can say that I've tried this place. read more

Cañon There were plenty of tables but we still had to wait about 10 minutes to be seated with a reservation. The ambiance was nice. We ordered the Cured albacore crudo which was a little fishy but you can taste the yuzu with a kick. This was nothing special and not worth. The Tots was the best thing on the menu. Crispy on the outside and fluffy inside. They were not greasy and the Mole has a ton of flavor that added complexity to the dish. I loved the pickled onions cause it adds acidity but I would not come back to this restaurant for it but I would recommend if you wanted to come eat here. The Trout had a cool presentation but that was the only thing going for it. Flavor itself was bland and just not desirable. The Steak was good but I have had better at steakhouse. Saw the reviews for the restaurant and was excited to give it a try. We ordered the focaccia, seasonal salad, Japanese sweet potatoes and the tomahawk. The best dish was the focaccia. Focaccia was made right, and very tasty. The salad and sweet potatoes were good, but not memorable. The tomahawk was kinda gamey, not acceptable for that price. Service was ok, but we never got plate change between courses, and they never gave us steak knife for our steak. Never got our dessert menu so we just decided to skip dessert. Had a great experience at Canon! I absolutely loved the chicken drumsticks! The flavor and char on the outside was so unique and delicious, what a creative combo to put mole on the chicken. Wow! I was in town for work, and my friend and I decided to check out Canon... glad we did! The space was clean, breezy, and modern, while still feeling cozy. We ordered a couple appetizers (I got the tots with mole, she got shishitos), and they were a good appetizer size, and well presented. For a main, my friend got the duck, and I chose the salad greens with truffle dressing, and the corn and polenta. The salad was PERFECT. Crisp, fresh greens and a creamy dressing that didn't overpower, complete with a shower of cheddar snow. The corn was a surprise! It didn't mention wasabi (or maybe horseradish) being in there, and whooooooo! She was a nostril cleaner! It was great! My friend's duck came with smoky charro beans, salsa verde, and labneh, and I had a bite... yum! The duck itself (according to my friend!) was very tender and tasty. BUT... they were WHOLE LEGS. I mean, thighs, joints, and WHOLE FEET. Webbing and claws and all... hanging off the plate. Being that they were grilled, it was rather... unpleasant to look at. I grew up in ag, and know where my food comes from, but... charred duck feet?! That's a big no thanks. Dessert was "Peaches and Cream," and came with cardamom scented doughnut balls, a salted cream, and compressed peaches. YUM! I love how accessible this Michelin Star restaurant is, while ingredients are fresh and dishes are innovative, theres a mix of dishes and price points that people can enjoy, for lunch, the bar, etc. We went in February for a birthday dinner so the dishes were still centered around winter ingredients like squash, cabbage, truffle, citrus, etc. We ordered the bread, scallop crudo, chicken for the main dish, miso cabbage and potatoes for sides. Then the 50/50 chocolate mousse with salted caramel for dessert. We also got their version of old fashioned, and the bartender made a hibiscus mocktail for me. The best thing was the miso cabbage & dessert in my opinion. The chicken was fantastic, the crispy skin was divine, wish it had more of the jus and squash shavings! The service was great, casual service and still professional. The server was knowledgeable about the menu. Loved the cedar wood ceilings and the black accents. A colleague chose Canon for a work team dinner. Somehow, I hadn't even heard of this restaurant, so i checked it out on Yelp and Maps. I immediately didn't like the location because I thought it would be hard to find parking. After looking at the menu, I was intrigued by the family style service, which I like but I wasn't excited about the food options. Oh well, it's a work dinner.... Finding a parking spot was indeed a bit difficult. It took me about 15 minutes until I got one within a few blocks. Maybe it's just me, but as big as the restaurant is, it didn't stand out from the street, which set me up for a Frank Lloyd Wright experience of entering through a small confined experience and then after crossing the threshold the space opening up in a big way. Inside, the restaurant seems spacious. It's open and airy. Upon walking in, I was immediately greeted by a friendly greeter who showed me to the table. After sitting down, a waiter greeted me and asked me for a drink order within a minute or two. We were off to a good start! There were already some appetizer-type dishes on the table. I had no idea what they were but they looked interesting and I was hungry. Wow! They were tasty. Over a couple hours, I sampled all kinds of dishes and every one of them was excellent! They were creative and eclectic dishes. They were made of combinations of ingredients that by description alone didn't strike me as appetizing. How wrong I was! The service that we experienced was excellent too. Throughout the dinner the staff were super attentive and friendly. This restaurant proved all of my preconceptions wrong (except for the parking). The date spot to top them all! We save Canon for special occasions, but when we do go, we go all out. Their service is attentive, their ingredients are fresh, and the environment allows you to truly enjoy one of the best meals you'll ever have. The menu changes often, so I won't get too specific of what to order. Canon has a few staples I can recommend: the tots, the drumsticks, and the oysters. The tots are crispy and sit on a bed of yummy mole. The drumsticks are scrumptious, covered in a spiced sauce and sit atop a yogurt sauce. And the oysters!! Went for my birthday dinner. All of the staff was amazing and very attentive (our water cups were constantly being filled)! Our waitress told us how the menu worked and prioritized dishes to the table based on timing and items complementary to each other. This is a restaurant that focuses on seasonal items so the menu is constantly changing. When we looked online prior to our reservation, we had a few items in mind to get which were unfortunately no longer available when we arrived. For drinks we had the Sassenach and Tea Time. The Sassenach was very lemon forward. Much more lemon than passion fruit. It had a wonderful sweet and tart balance and was not too sweet. Would definitely order again! Extremely smooth. The Tea Time was delicious as well. It had a light smokiness to it and a thicker viscosity from the syrup they used, which had a wonderful mouthfeel. The Grilled Half Moon Bay Artichoke was wonderfully cooked. The dipping sauce had a nice spiciness to it. I liked the addition of the corn chips for a bit of texture. The Roasted Heirloom Carrot Salad was very tasty. I would say it was more of a side dish than salad. The puree was a nice compliment to the citrusy vinaigrette and was velvety smooth. The Smashed Sifra Potatoes were fantastic with the Tomahawk Ribeye. I only wish there were more! I enjoyed the addition of the tempura chickpeas for texture. Lastly was the 48 oz Tomahawk Ribeye. They told us it would take approximately 45 minutes so all of our side dishes, except for the potatoes arrived prior to the steak. It didn't end up taking as long as expected and I wish the carrots would've come out with the ribeye, but I don't think there would have been room at our 2 person table. Our family dined at Canon for the first time to celebrate a special occasion. They have an intriguing seasonal menu and family style servings. We were all excited to try them out, and they did not disappoint! The restaurant is a bit tucked away in East Sac. Inside and outside on the patio, it's a beautiful restaurant. The patio is very comfortable and barely feels like you're outside. It's entirely covered with shades that get rolled up once the sun goes down. We had reservations and were greeted and seated right away. The food came out in a timely manner, and we ended up ordering in courses - appetizers, entrees than dessert. There were five of us so we ordered three small plates and two entrees to share. We were indecisive about dessert, so we ordered all four of them! No regrets! Everything was delicious. Potato wise - we all preferred the tater tots in mole to the steakhouse style. The Dutch crunch roll was shareable. The tomatoes were fresh and delicious. The steak and pork collar were both beautifully cooked. The pork was exceptional with a super unique and flavorful sauce. Each of the desserts were tasty as well. Sopapillas were the crowd favorite! I think this is a great place for a date night or celebrating an anniversary. I made an appointment just in case and we were seated right away. Parking just might be difficult since it's downtown. We ordered 4 dishes between the two of us and it was more than enough! We enjoyed both of the chicken dishes we got. The drumsticks had this very herby, Mediterranean-like flavor and the meat came right off the bone. The whole chicken wasn't dry at all (was still good the next day) and paired really well with the broccoli dish. The shrimp beignets were decent, but we couldn't really taste the shrimp. read more

Canon is tucked away on 34th street and it's easy to miss either walking or driving by, but once you step inside the high ceilings and beautiful decor will grab your attention. Our waiter explained to us that Canon is family style and guided us through the menu. Service was impeccable. Everything from the menu, to the speed of dishes, to the care shown by the service team was top notch. I'd go back for the service alone, but the food matches their quality of service. I found myself addicted to the garlic miso butter. I tasted a smoky garlicky flavor and the crunch from the toppings really started off the night right. The peppers were gorgeous. Nothing super spicy, but just rich, charred like flavor and there was some type of sauce that just added the right touch of saltiness for me. The smoked chicken was juicy. If you like your smoked meats then this chicken will be the highlight for you. The night ended with one of the best tasting pavlovas i have ever eaten. I'd say this dessert is the best of any restaurant in the Sacramento region right now. Count yourself lucky if you have the opportunity to experience it. I've been here so many times, just now getting around to leaving a review. Tonight, I came here by myself (wife had book club). Sat at the bar and received terrific service. Ordered a bourbon cocktail, crispy skin pork belly, hamachi tiradito, and the chicken drumsticks (an old standby). The leche de tigre that came with the hamachi was crazy good. (The internet says leche de tigre is Peruvian marinade and aperitif made from fish trimmings, citrus juices, and other ingredients. It's the green stuff in the picture. ) Oh, and I ordered an Austrian red wine, also delicious. And OMG, I've had the drumsticks so many times, but they've never been this good. The yogurt takes it over the top. So just another amazing meal from Canon. Come here and you won't be disappointed. I do recommend coming with friends because then you can order more of the menu. I had a good experience at Cannon. To start, we made reservations and my wife and I were seated promptly. Wait time (for food) was about 20-25 minutes. The ambience was nice and peaceful. The lighting was great. We started with the sourdough bread with cultured butter. This was a 5/5. The bread was heavy in a good way, and the butter was just excellent. We also got the chicken drumsticks, which were melt-in-your-mouth delicious and they fell apart perfectly. The only downside was there were just two! For the main meal, we got the steak medium-rare, but it was about a 3.5/5. It felt overcooked and nothing special. The appetizer overall was great though, and we enjoyed it. The mocktail was also a nice touch. All in all, it was about a 3.8/5 dining experience for us. Omg food was so delicious!! Our waitress was great and she was very attentive. We were seated outside but they had heaters on, so it wasn't too cold. It was actually nice. We ordered tots, winter citrus salad, roasted Nantes carrots, grilled broccoli Caesar, smoked whole chicken, and New York strip. Everything was very good! My favorite was the smoked chicken and tots. I am giving Cannon 4 stars because the cocktails were delicious and the service was amazing. I would love for this restaurant to take their food to the next level when it comes to flavor. I understand they work with local producers and focus on what's in season but that doesn't mean the menu should be bland. We found that most items were very earthy and root vegetable forward but missed the mark on flavor add to these more bland veggies. Food was very fresh, hot and for the most part good but not great! Still, worth a try as a Michelin restaurant but not one of my favorites in the area. read more

This was a "fine" experience, and I did temper expectations visiting from New York First, I would not say this is a fine dining institution. The vibes were casual, not that that's a bad thing. Service was friendly but the mains took an AWFULLY LONG time to come. Seriously long. And there was nary an acknowledgment of that fact. A bit strange? At a "fine" dining place I would've expected not just profuse acknowledgment but also something to compensate for the wait... Onto the food - several things were better than others - the crispy brussel sprouts (though a tad oily), pave lamb, and beet salad were tasty. The rest - scallop crudo, chicken wings, something else we ordered - were not memorable. I had a cocktail that was also just OK. Maybe it is my fault for ordering an extra spicy margarita when I know the best is at home in my little island (and at Atla/Cosme, for those curious). Overall, fine. Our friends took us there and they had caveated that they got lazy and didn't know where else to go in East Sac. Will not be hurrying back any time soon. read more

The scallop scampi HEAVEN exploding in your mouth. It's all the flavors blended to perfection. You get hint of sweet, savory, and beautifully zest in every bite. A masterpiece of a dish. The lollipop was my husband's favorite. The Brussel sprouts are basic, but basic is good. Dessert we got the apple something, which was alright. Service can be slow, we got there at 7:30 PM on a Tuesday and we waited 30 minutes to be waited which upfront was a bit off putting, but the food slightly made up for it. We've been to Canon several times and enjoyed the food. It has been a while though and we wanted to check out the new dishes they had. The restaurant wasn't too busy when we came in early on a Sunday for dinner. We decided to sit inside, but the outside covered area is even nicer in my opinion. The menu isn't too extensive. It consists of small plates, vegetables, and platters. There was a quick bites paper clipped to the main menu as well. We usually skip the platters and order the other items on the menu to share. Off the quick bites menu, we had the grilled apricot and porchetta di testa. We liked the apricot with the cheese. The porchetta was good too, but the toast was overly crunchy. The hamachi tiradito small plate was my favorite. We also got the California asparagus and grilled broccoli. I preferred the broccoli, which came with cubes of beef tongue. I would've preferred if both vegetables came with thinner stalks though. As for drinks, I got the Valley Girl because it has foam. My bf's Sassenach was preferable since it was refreshing. The food was enjoyable overall, but most of the dishes didn't really stand out. I'll have to wait for something to really catch my eye before returning again. read more
