We went for a friend's birthday. We started at the bar with drinks and a few apps during Winston hour and then moved to the kitchen counter for dinner. The bar was a bit busy but we were able to choose from seats at the bar. I am used to being greeted or at least acknowledged even when someone is busy, so that could be improved upon as it was several minutes and I had to borrow someone else's menu, but once served the service was great and the drinks were made well. They were very sweet and put our friend's name on the menus which is a lovely touch. We ordered a little bit of everything to share family style. Everything was very well made and tasty. All the staff we interacted with including the server, food runner and expo were all really great and made great recommendations. They were very well versed on the menu items and the specials and able to answer questions knowledgeably which is refreshing these days. Over all a great place for drinks and apps after work or a nice dinner. read more

One of my favs for work dinners... Had a crew of 12 of us, and despite the large group, they were able to take a reso only an hour before. Great space for work dinners due to coziness yet elevated nature of the spot. We got a bunch of apps to start, the sausage rolls being my favorite, but their oysters were fresh and great, too. My colleague and I split a pasta and the chicken, both were amazingly flavored. We also rounded things out with dessert, and the sticky toffee pudding was the best! Perfect dessert. We came here for a date night and had a mixed experience overall. We ordered the meat pie, sausage rolls, hash browns, and the market special scallops. The meat pie was flavorful, but unfortunately a bit dry. The accompanying sauce helped add some much-needed moisture and brought everything together. The sausage rolls and hash browns were both enjoyable and had no major complaints. The biggest disappointment was the scallops. At $58, we expected a much higher standard. My husband noticed a slightly fishy smell right away, and the texture was mushy with an off taste. It was a real letdown, especially considering the price. For dessert, we had the sticky toffee pudding, which was delicious and easily the highlight of the meal. My only small suggestion would be to serve the toffee sauce a little warmer. On a positive note, the service was friendly and attentive throughout the evening. Overall, I'd give this place 3.5 out of 5 stars. There were some enjoyable dishes, but the disappointing scallops made it hard to justify a higher rating. read more

The hubster took me to Camden Spit & Larder for a lunch date. The interior is tastefully decorated and has a comfortable flare. We were seated at a lovely table next to the windows. Our server, Lindsay, was friendly and full of suggestions when we told her this was our maiden voyage at Camden. We began our meal with the six sausage rolls. I've seen other reviews complaining that the mustard was too spicy. I would disagree. There is clearly some horseradish in it, but for us that provided a lovely kick. The rolls themselves were outstanding. We paired them with a Pimm's Cup and Dew of the Sun. This was followed by their very tasty Simple Salad. Don't let the name fool you, the flavors are anything but simple! The hubster ordered the Steak Frites which was cooked to perfection and I was delighted by their Pressed Grilled Cheese. The hubster's was combined with a salad and perfectly made hand-cut fries, while mine had the most devine House Chips. We ended our meal Sharing their Pavlova, even though I have seen raving reviews about their Sticky Toffee Pudding and I must say this was as beautiful as it was spectacular tasting. What a lunch! I would encourage one and all who prefer to savor good food and experience a dining experience to make a rezzie and enjoy! We will definitely return soon! read more

We'd been wanting to try this restaurant ever since it appeared on the Michelin Recommended Guide, and it absolutely lived up to the hype. When I think of British food, I usually picture hearty pub fare and pints of beer, so I was pleasantly surprised by how refined and elevated the experience was here. The steak tartare was exceptional, beautifully balanced with rich egg yolk and bright acidity. Easily one of the best versions I've had. The prime rib was cooked perfectly and paired with a deeply flavorful, decadent au jus style sauce with a subtle sweetness that brought everything together. The meat pie filling rotates weekly, and during our visit it featured chicken. It was good, though I had expected a more traditional ground beef filling. Still enjoyable, just different from what I anticipated. The service was equally impressive. At one point, a server quietly stopped by to refold my wife's napkin when she stepped away from the table, a small touch that perfectly reflected the level of attentiveness throughout the evening. Camden Spit & Larder is on the Michelin guide as a recommended restaurant in Downtown Sacramento. The restaurant is decorated to have the luxury modern style, with floor to ceiling windows and a polished bar with open kitchen. Chef Oliver Ridgeway had over 25 years of culinary experience, who was great in setting the style and lifestyle for the farm to table dining experience. Since we were celebrating my birthday, we were greeted by a toast of champagne. And the bread was popover with butter, which was fantastic. Larder Old Fashioned $18 Husband ordered the old fashioned with Buffalo Trace Bourbon, Demerara, and CS&L Bitters. Spring Espresso Martini $18 I got the special espresso martini made with On Nitro Ketel One Vodka, Mr. Black, Yellow Chartreuse, Rose, and Cacao. Chilled Pacific Oysters $22 Half dozen of the Pacific oysters from Washington State. On the side there were mignonette, Winston's Hot Sauce and a slice of lemon. Oysters were very fresh! 1855 New York Steak $58 Husband ordered the New York steak cooked to medium as his main. On the side there were broccolini, pommes dauphine, cippolini onions, maitake mushrooms, and topped with black garlic jus. The steak was very thick but juicy inside and slightly crispy outside. Market Fish $48 The market fish of the day was cod. Deep fried with crispy skin, and the sliced potato and the vegetables were a great pair. Sticky Toffee Pudding $14 For dessert we got the English style sticky toffee pudding. Made with maple bourbon toffee sauce, cinnamon snap tuile, and vanilla ice cream. Stopped by on a recent Friday to enjoy lunch with the Mrs. The food: - oysters: fresh and surprisingly meaty for small ones (excellent) - ahi tuna salad: good but probably a bit off in the greens vs fish ratio; 20% fewer salad would have been good - Friday special fish and chips; good but both fish and fries could have used another 45 seconds in the fryer - sticky toffee pudding; again good but a bit one note. Sprinkle of salt would have lifted the dish - coffee: good but served 15 minutes after dessert and warm, not hot That leads me to the reason for 3 stars vs 4 for the food. Service while friendly was suprisingly off. Long pause between oysters and entrees when surrounding tables which ordered after we did received food first. Would guess they missed our order and then rushed fish and chips out. Bigger issue was with receipt of dessert with no sign of coffee. Had to ask again 10 minutes later and took another 5 minutes to arrive and arrived warm vs. hot. The goal was for a leisurely lunch but not almost 2 hours worth. We had a reservation on a Thursday night but there were ample available tables when we arrived. Sierra greeted us and was thrilled to hear we were celebrating a birthday! (Note: if you remember to share that you're celebrating a birthday when you make a reservation, they give you a customized menu that is a lovely souvenir :) I just forgot to do that this time) We started with a complimentary pour of champagne to toast, and got a couple of delicious cocktails on Sierra's recommendation. Our usual food strategy is to share a bunch of plates because there is never a bad dish on the menu. This time, we shared the asparagus salad (UNREAL, we already have plans to visit again this week to eat it), the farmers cheese, the salmon, and the broccolini side. It was the perfect amount of food for the two of us and was maybe our favorite meal we've had here. We also had enough room left over for the necessary sticky toffee pudding, their signature dessert. It hits all the right notes and is the perfect end to a meal. Sierra was so warm and attentive throughout the whole meal, making us laugh and feel so comfortable. Decent Upscale food on Capitol Mall. Location: located just outside DOCO at the 555 Capitol Mall is the swank looking Camden Spit & Larder. This vibe and location screams a great place for date or a place to hang out with friends for a work celebration. Towards the front is the bar area and seating is toward the back. The location feels light and airy and bar is lowkey and nice for a calmer bar environment versus some of the busier places around. This place also has outside seating but it was raining pretty aggressively. Parking options are close and plentiful. Service: We were seated at the bar and service was pretty great but slightly slow at times when asking for certain items. This might have been partially our choice of picking the bar side and ordering an abundance of food. One annoying this is we asked for chips a couple of times for our steak tartare but they never got back to us until MUCH later. Steak tartare had been siting around for a bit at that point Food: we ordered quite possibly everything on the appetizer/sides and those were all great! We did order two specials of the short rib pot pie and the Beef Wellington and here is where it gets docked quite a bit. A Beef Wellington is a tough dish to master and consequently it can be quite pricey. One of the biggest issues we had here is that the tenderloin was overcooked. A proper Wellington should be medium rare and this was firmly medium. Otherwise the duxelle, pastry, and ham seemed to be well prepared. I can forgive that l this is a slice of a larger Wellington but the overcooked nature and then price really pulled down the star rating. I'll get off my high horse now, the other special was met with happiness by my compatriots and the drinks were great otherwise. If you are coming for drinks or some less complex dish then this would be a pretty good date night spot read more

As a fan of the overhated British cuisine, Camden Spit & Larder has been on my radar for a while. We booked it for a pre-Valentine's Day dinner and made a reservation well in advance. It's tucked behind DOCO in an area most people probably wouldn't wander into, but it's charming outside and very modern and comfortable inside. We arrived a little early but were seated right away. From start to finish, the service was top class. It was attentive and personable and made the whole experience feel relaxed and comfortable. We started with the house farmer's cheese and the steak tartare. They also brought out complimentary bread and butter, which was a nice touch, though it definitely filled us up before the mains. The farmer's cheese was light and not overly rich, and it paired well with the charred, crusty bread it came with. I love steak tartare and, in truth, I've had better. This one was good but a bit mustard-heavy for my taste. Still tasty. The gin and tonic I ordered was hands down the best I've ever had. It was incredibly smooth. For mains, we had the sunchoke agnolotti and the English meat pie. I tried the agnolotti and it was fantastic. The sauce was excellent, slightly sweet with deep flavor and savory notes from the carrots. I was really excited for the meat pie since it's such an iconic British dish, but I found it just okay. The flavors weren't particularly riveting, and at this price point you expect each dish to really wow you. That said, the presentation was excellent. We finished with the chocolate mousse with peaches. It was tasty, but again, not especially impressive considering the higher-end pricing. Overall, the service, ambiance, and food were good, just not quite five stars for me. I'd come back for lunch and try the fish and chips and sausage rolls for a more classic British order. read more

We ordered a bottle of their white wine that was excellent and started with the beautifully presented deviled eggs- that I recommend you just eat in one bite. My husband and I ate here as part of a date night out. The restaurant has a parking garage that you can use and they provide a QR code to validate one hour for free. The place was busy for a Thursday night but we thankfully made a reservation in advance. The waiter served popovers with salted butter while we waited for our appetizers. They were good but slightly greasy. The mai tai was interesting but not something we would order again. I chose the royal me mocktail and it was refreshing. We ordered the sausage rolls and tomato bisque to start. My soup was delicious, but my husband said the sausage rolls were "ok" and the mustard they served with the rolls was so spicy he choked. It was mostly horseradish and not mustard. For our main courses I chose the house made pasta and it was very flavorful. My husband ordered the spit roasted chicken and he liked it. For dessert we had the sticky toffee pudding and it was good but nothing compared to one you would find in the UK. Came during lunch hour with some co workers. Upon entering I was astonished by how beautiful this place was all I kept telling myself was how beautiful it may look at night. Very neat place and loved the seating areas all around. The kitchen area was stunning I loved that I could watch everyone cooking at my eye level. It's a well oiled machine of service. They have popovers! Love that. Our corn soup was excellent as were the accompaniments of our halibut special.
