Went here for my wife's birthday. Had to pick one of the best spots for her special day. The restaurant is unassuming as you walk in off the streets of midtown to a really nice bar area. It was during the 10 special individuals menu. I thought the biographies were a bit forced. What could have been a fun way of bringing in a bunch of unrelated dishes came off as kind of irrelevant. Too much information made it hard to follow. I came away thinking this wasn't really adding to my dinner experience. The waiter advised us to be active participants but after the long biographies they left us no gap to interject or discuss. The food was obviously stellar and the wine pairings were excellent but it was honestly hard to tell because the portions were not just small they had to be studied under a microscope. I am not a stranger to fine dining but this was quite a surprise. I knew to expect small plates but I'm talking comically small. So small if you explain it to non restaurant critics they don't even believe you-small. I know Michelin does not rate on portion size but this was shocking. Presentation was impeccable, timing was perfect, but I need more than two (child size spoonfuls) spoonfuls to enjoy a meal. I am not a professional restaurant critic showing up to evaluate food. I am a busy family man and when I dine out I still expect a somewhat satiating meal even at a small plates service. Because these weren't just small plates these were comically minuscule. One of the dessert courses was funny, it was simply a teaspoon of gelato served on a spoon! Don't eat it all in one bite! If you want to be amazed with intricate cooking methods and ingredients this is great but just know you need to have a normal dinner afterwards. Eating before would be too bourgeois as I know they want each plate to shine and not feel full during the meal. Drinks were excellent and the bartender did a fantastic job for us. For our fifth wedding anniversary, my husband and I came to Localis. I had been wanting to try Localis for years, so I was thrilled when the opportunity arose and we dined there for our anniversary. We managed to get one of the last seating reservations (not throwing my husband under the bus, but we did make the reservation very last minute), and I was blown away from start to finish. The service was impeccable with all of the wait staff being extremely kind, engaging and attentive. Their depth of knowledge of the dishes was phenomenal, but they presented it in a way that was approachable and not stuffy. The food speaks for itself. The particular menu we enjoyed was a journey to Osaka, Japan with dishes ranging from sushi and tempura to Ramen and Wagyu. Needless to say, we were both completely satisfied and left extremely full. My dinner at Localis took place a few Saturdays ago for a special occassion and it did not disappoint. Sitting at the bar allows for a first-hand view of all the action in the open kitchen. Pre-pay for the dinner upon completion of the reservation. The 3 hour dinner included a "MC" who shared about each entree and its inspiration. The Japanese theme was inspired by the master chef's culinary trip to various cities across Japan. Some included traditional dishes, while many others included a fusion twist. Of the 10 courses, my favorites included the udon noodles in coffee broth, savory custard, and the octopus. All the staff was attentive, genuine, and friendly. I even received an actual phone call from their staff confirming my attendance and following up about any dietary restrictionss. I don't think I've talked to a live person in a long time before the actual experience. Restrooms were clean. Street parking only, but not too difficult. In the future when I dine here again is to pick an earlier time. The dinner started at 8pm and I didn't finish until almost 11pm. By the 8th course, I was tired and sleepy. I've been to Localis twice, once before they got their star during covid, and again after they got their star. The chef does a lot of themed menus based on his travels, and or interests (Lord of the Rings). Some times remain the same when the menu switches up. The first time was pretty bomb and the price point was good. The second time was just fine, and despite the Lord of the Rings theme, it no longer felt unique or original. It was also quite expensive. From the exquisitely prepared dishes, inviting ambiance to the friendly and helpful staff, this restaurant checks off all the boxes. On this visit we had the Japan pt.2 dishes and they were DELICIOUS. This specific dinner was inspired by Chef Chris' trip to Japan. Each bite was masterfully prepared and Chef Chris gave an opening presentation on each one and why he chose to include it in this menu. Out of the 10 dishes, I don't think we were able to pick a favorite. They were all so good. Each dish was also paired with either wine or sake and complimented the taste of the dish. Three years ago, I described this restaurant as "Michelin-star worthy." They ended up getting that longed-for star, and the meal was so memorable I wanted to go back. It's a completely revamped menu; this 'season,' the focus is on Japanese cuisine, which, by its nature, is quite subtle. But Localis makes it lively and fun. Not every dish was a hit, and that's OK. They're trying new and wild things, and when a dish works, it shines. I loved the wagyu, the dumpling in a spicy broth, and a coffee dessert that rivals some of the best and most creative desserts in the country. I'm looking forward to seeing what the next menus are like. As for hospitality - both this and The Kitchen (the two Michelin-starred spots in Sacramento) have some of the best hospitality in the country. This was our first experience fine dining and we were blown away by the experience. I was initially anxious and expected to feel alienated by the setting. However my worries were certainly unfounded as the service and atmosphere were incredibly welcoming. Over the course of our meal we got to meet with the kitchen and were able to find an appreciation with every dish and drink. For my partner who had never been to a 10-course fixed menu type of place, this was amazing. As for me... I've had better. The plating is beautiful. The servers are amazing. Unfortunately the dishes were... odd. This is for one of these "10 interesting people" series he is doing right now. Honestly the amuse bouche at the very beginning was my favorite. A number of the dishes were strange, or not very good. I was definitely satiated at the end, plenty of food and time. Not for the price though. Worst of all, the chef-owner made a passive aggressive comment to me and my partner at one point, was mocking one of his chefs at others, and I was shocked to hear him say "sh*t" and "f*ck" during his presentation of dishes. I dont know if he was trying to go for some down-to-earth, relatable Cool guy routine or what, but it was very strange for the elevated and classy experience we were going for. I don't think I will return. Especially not for the treatment at the price point. If I did, I would probably want to go to a fixed menu centered around a more cohesive theme (such as a cuisine of a specific country/region, rather than 10 random interviews) and would sit in the dining room instead of at the chef's counter. read more

From the moment we walked in we felt welcomed and knew we could expect an exceptional level of service. We weren't disappointed. The food was highly creative and our palates were treated with a wide range of flavors - on their own and combined. The tasting pairing that accompanied the meal (for quite the additional fee) was excellent. From champagne, to wine, to beer and saki, this was also very creative. Chef Chris' presentation was unique. He had stories to tell about each dish and the person whom he had in mind when he created it. Our experience was at the bar, right in front of him and his team, so we also noticed that the team seemed to really enjoy their jobs and were passionate about the presentation of every dish. The only downside for us was that my wife unfortunately ate something that didn't agree with her earlier in the day, so her experience was cut short that night as she had to stop about half way through. Michelin star well deserved and rightfully so!! To say we enjoyed our experience at Localis would be an understatement. Absolutely loved every minute!! The staff was extremely attentive, Chef Chris would actually make time to do rounds on the tables (served us water and we didn't even KNOW he was the chef... shame on us), ambience was very classy, reservations were super easy, and smiles were on our face from start to finish. The only finicky part was the parking. Localis is in a residential area with adjacent 1 hr parking and some 2 hr walking curbs but we just couldn't figure out how to pay for the 2 hr spots. Took the risk of parking right out front with 1 hr signs and luckily no parking maids came around! Chef Chris changes his 10-course menus every 5 weeks (I think?). Our theme was "An Autobiography - Localis Familia Food Memories Menu." Staff would tell us their personal story behind the motivation for each dish and we would dive right in to each delicacy. Every single dish was so unique and every bite severely savory that sent us to the moon and back! And yes, I mean every.. single.. bite. Yum!! Reservations are simple via Tock (or their website) and yes you pay ahead of time, so we just booked the basic 10-course meal. However, it's not set in stone so don't stress out! Any additions can be made when you get there. My wife and I decided to add 1 drink pairing experience and shared it with each other. Now here's the kicker - there are 2 sections for seating. The Dining Room experience is more intimate, quieter, and table seating. On a special occasion or date? Go Dining Room. The Chef's Counter experience is more lively, fun, and ecstatic. Want to enjoy a tremendous Michelin course and a full on experience with the Chef? Go Chef's Counter. We did the Dining Room this round but definitely would love to experience Chef's Counter next time. This Michelin star gem is one of those never forget moments! Pricey but absolutely worth it. Lucky for me I was able to dine at Localis as someone's guest, so I was rather unaware and unbothered by the costs involved. As we arrived the staff was extremely welcoming to us even holding the door open to welcome us in. We were taken to a nice table and were presented with our menu cards nicely personalized. The dining room was small and intimate and as the spaces filled with diners it became very loud and hard to hear. The 10 course menu was interesting and varied and unusual and original. It was delicious. Service was excellent too. Super excellent imho. My only ding against the place was regarding the menu theme, the story that accompanied every dish served, and the noise. Ultimately this is the part of the experience that fell flat because the story was often lost in a sea of noise. Of course the staff was aware and did the best they can and would always answer questions and provide clarification. It was the best 3 hour meal ever. Being a Michelin star restaurant it's not just about food but its thoughtful dining and a curated experience. My one request is that they figure out how to deaden some of the noise in this rather small space in order to make the delivery of the experience that much better. read more

I asked about a substitution due to a food allergy and was flatly told no, so I just skipped the course. At this price point? Not it. He also made awkward comments to couples about sitting at the "corner table," was cussing excessively during service, and openly criticized staff in a degrading tone. Given the hundreds of positive reviews and various recognitions the restaurant has received, we were eager to finally go and were really excited and expecting to love it, especially for the price. It pains us to review it this way. Everything about it seemed like it should be amazing--the menu theme, the menu descriptions, even the aroma when the food first was brought to the table. But once we started eating, the flavors just completely missed the mark, course after course. The courses felt oddly flat, like they were afraid of committing to any real seasoning. Several of our courses had all the right components on paper, but somehow tasted oddly flavored, muted, and confused, all at the same time--like the ingredients never quite came together into the wonderful flavors that we expected from all the positive laurels. Portions that should have been rich and balanced were either oddly flavored or bland, and spices were either absent or used in a way that didn't make sense. Even the long pre-course explanations didn't help. Although we definitely recognize that the course descriptions were meant to enhance the experience, and they were well-presented, the courses themselves ended up dull and uninspired, almost like an afterthought. Nothing was outright bad in terms of execution--it just wasn't enjoyable to eat. It's frustrating, because you can tell effort went into the dishes, but the flavor profiles felt way off, like no one stopped to taste and adjust along the way. The drink pairings were enjoyable and adequate, but perhaps the current ownership strains outside of the kitchen had an effect on staffing and preparation? We left full enough, but not satisfied. When we went, each course was an autobiographical nod to the chef's life. You can tell how much thought went into every ingredient. We sat at the counter and loved how interactive our meal was. We got to chat with the chefs and see them at work. I also appreciated how they went above and beyond to accommodate my pescatarian diet as well as the fact that I was nearly 9 months pregnant and they made sure that each of my courses didn't miss a beat even if they had to deviate slightly. This was my third time dining at Localis, and once again it was an incredible experience. I went with a friend and we sat at the chef's table, which I highly recommend if you're able to. The current menu seems to center around a theme of family, and you can really feel it not just in the food, but in the atmosphere. Each course was inspired or even co-created by different members of the team, and that collaborative spirit really came through. We did the drink pairing this time (which was excellent), and someone sitting near us tried the non-alcoholic pairing and said it was also really well done. One of the things that stood out most to me, beyond how good everything tasted, was how much you can tell the staff genuinely enjoys being there. There's a really supportive energy...like seeing the head chef jump in to help plate dishes alongside the rest of the team to keep things flowing smoothly. It just reinforces that 'family' vibe in such a beautiful way. Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. My wife and I have done many tasting menus and this was our favorite by far. Not a single dish was one that I didn't say "yeah I'd eat a whole plate of that!" I would highly recommend the counter. So much to see and it's important to keep entertained with a three hour meal. So cool to watch and interact with the staff. I appreciate the adherence to a theme. Every course was well thought out and the flavors all came together. While each dish is small it definite adds up and you'll leave satisfied. And with a little loaf of banana bread. I really enjoyed the non alcoholic pairing. I felt each one was a great complement or homage to the course it came with. However the price was a little steep. I wouldn't say it's not worth it but it's a bit pricey. I won't go into detail with the food because what I had will likely not be there next time. I really appreciated how they accommodated our dietary needs and kept with the theme. Many places will just swap in something that just doesn't fit. For example we had a non seafood person but they still made a faux caviar that they served instead of the caviar. It was genius. A friend introduced my partner and I to Localis about 8 months ago, and it has become our obsession ever since. We're no strangers to Michelin star dining, but Localis continues to stand above other experiences in variety, in quality, and most of all, vibes! Localis is as approachable as it is exquisite, and they have never failed to surprise and delight us - and make us laugh - during every visit. I don't use the word "experience" lightly. If you can book your first time here at the bar, that is a must. You get to interact with the chefs and see them work as they construct beautiful, edible artwork to place in front of you. It's an experience you won't soon forget, and is a perfect way to celebrate a birthday, anniversary, or other special occasion. In general, you'll be eating and drinking through 10-12 courses over 2 1/2 hours. The menu changes every couple months, with a few constants that keep things grounded in Localis history and tradition, such as their famed octopus or nostalgic banana bread. Every menu has standouts, but there has somehow never been a "bad" item - and my partner and I are sometimes stretched out of comfort zone with specific dishes. Everything put in front of you will be delicious. Speaking of delicious, the wine parings at Localis are second to none. I'm not a huge wine person myself, but it's a crime to not include wines with your meal when you go here. I treated myself to the pricey "time & place" pairing one time, and every single glass was the best I had ever had of the respective type of wine. It was mind blowing. But even the standard pairings hit home hard, and again, this is from someone who is very much not a "wine person." Finally, I have to give a shoutout to the incredible cocktails at Localis. They are as inventive as they are delicious, and oftentimes will appear with in the beverage pairing menu. When I had the time & place pairing menu I received a cocktail made from one of the most expensive gins in the world, and to date it's one of the best cocktails I've ever had. But even at a more affordable level cocktails like the "street taco margarita" or "not an espresso martini" will leave you amazed at how many complex flavors can exist in a single glass. Localis is one of only two Michelin-starred restaurants in the greater Sacramento area, and after going twice, I can confidently say it lives up to that level. I first came here for my four year anniversary and did the 7 course tasting. It was the perfect amount of food and a great introduction to what they do. The second time was for our sixth anniversary, and we went all in with the chef's experience, sitting right by the kitchen for a 12 course meal. Amazing experience, but I am not going to lie, it was a serious challenge to finish. Worth it, but you will feel it. I have been to a few tasting menu spots, including some that were more expensive, but this one has been my favorite so far. To be fair, I have not done the absolute top tier places like The French Laundry, but even with that said, Localis stands out in a big way. What really separates this place is the creativity and the flavor profiles. Some of the flavors were so unique and unfamiliar that I genuinely did not even know they existed. It is not just about being fancy, it actually tastes incredible. Every dish feels intentional and well thought out. Presentation is on another level too. Each course comes out looking like a piece of art, but it never feels overdone. And what I really appreciated is how well everything flows. Each dish transitions naturally into the next, so the whole experience feels cohesive instead of random. The desserts deserve their own mention. Truly out of this world. Easily some of the most memorable bites from both visits. Service is exactly what you would expect at this level. Attentive, detailed, and very knowledgeable, but still warm and approachable. The Spicy Tuna and Wagyu Tartare sushi screams umami as it melts in your mouth. Mac nut miso, soooo good. There was a carrot purée under a carrot arancini that had my jaw on the floor. The flavor was unlike anything I have had before. The Roast Squash/Apricot tart was as beautiful as it was delicious. It had these citriusy pickled watermelon ribbons that made the dish pop. I moved from the bay area and missed my michelin take out very much so I was really happy to stumble upon Localis. It was the little bit of "fine dining" we got to do during lockdown out here. Got the chance to visit in person after they did their remodel, and was very impressed from the food, service, vibes, and price point. It was my first fine dining experience in the area and I loved how chill and relaxed the vibe was, not the typical fine dining experience. At that time they didn't receive their star yet but I knew it was bound to happen. And now they have their michelin star for the third year in a row. I always opt for the chef's counter for a more interactive experience that is really fun. It was also the first time I have seen a non-alcoholic pairing, which was very unique and my friend really enjoyed it! Not everyone is a drinker so it's nice to have that option. Their menu changes on a regular basis, with a few staples that has some modifications such as the caviar and potato chip (I can eat that nonstop) and the octopus (TENDER PERFECT DELICIOUS). They always have such innovative dishes and drinks and you never know what you can expect on the menu aside from great food, service, and drinks. Reservations are harder to get nowadays with their accolades and more people now know about how great they are, so make sure to book in advance. We visit a few times a year as it is great for special occasions or just wanting a nice dinner out. I've also been here for NYE a few times and so fun! And no, they don't charge you more because of holidays, which is great. So all the hallmark holidays are great to celebrate here as you won't pay double for 1/2 the food like most places. My husband brought me here for my birthday. He wanted to do something special for me. He booked this place weeks in advance. This is a tasting menu. They charge per person. Wine or non-alcoholic pairings are an extra charge. You can order drinks; pairings are not required. The menu does change with the seasons. We sat at the bar/counter where you can see the plating process. Our seats had a menu of what they were going to serve that night. The food was great. Every dish was unique and had a story with it. All the chefs put a lot of work into it. You can see how hard they worked, and they want the plates to be perfect. At the end of dinner service, the Chef gave us a little baked good to take home. LOCALIS! LOCALIS! 5/5! I had the best experience here last night! 12 course meal was PHENOMENAL! I had the best hits menu and I couldn't rave about it more. Each plate was so unique and highlighted multiple ways the chef thought about the taste in your mouth. Everything was 10/10. Cocktail menu was divine! It is a MUST TRY! I've never had a better cocktail than here. Staff was amazing. They knew everything about the menu and made sure our water never ran dry. I've been to two other Michelin restaurants and this is the best one! read more
