I love to stop into Cantina Laredo for happy hour, so this review is primarily focused on the bar and appetizers. I have not yet had a full meal at this location. Cantina has a good selection of drinks as well as daily specials that are a pretty good deal. My favorite day to visit the bar is on a Monday when they serve $5 Patron Ritas all day long! The chips and salsa are great, you can tell they fresh fry the chips and that makes a big difference to me! They offer some of the best salsa around, if you're asking this guy. The 'spicy' salsa is la bomba! As far as the appetizers go, I have tried the Barbacoa tacos and they were really great. They contain slow-roasted pulled beef, onions, corn and a yummy tomatillo sauce on top with some Monterey Jack cheese. I would recommend them for sure and I can't wait to try out a few of the other taco varieties they offer. All in all this restaurant has done a great job with their atmosphere and the bar area. HOLY GUACAMOLE! No really, the Top Shelf Guac is THE BEST! Before I tried it ages ago, I didn't think I liked guacamole (I truly didn't) and now I'm a changed woman! Let's live on the edge and go in, dessert first! The Mexican apple pie, sizzling, presented on a hot skillet in Brandy butter, and topped with cinnamon ice cream-- simply to die for!!! The shrimp flautas are another favorite of mine (no longer on the menu, but they make them for me every time)! I stopped in for lunch yesterday while shopping at SJTC. I have been here a few times but this is my first review. The others times I visited I just had drinks and appetizers. I arrived late for lunch and it was pretty empty. Sat in the bar area and started with a cocktail, salsa and chips. I like their warm salsa better than the cold. The cold one needs more flavor. The $5 Patron Margarita is a great deal and served all day in Monday's. Loved it! As far as the food goes I wasn't as impressed. My waitress recommended the salmon lunch special. It came with asparagus and a yellow rice. I must say the salmon was delicious and cooked perfectly but the two sides were underwhelming. The asparagus was dry and the woody pieces at the end we're not cut off. The rice was hard, cold and lacked flavor. Very boring! My server was lovely and very attentive. No problem with the service. I may give them another try in the future. I'd like to order an authentic Mexican dish next time. read more

What a great restaurant! Our daughter chose this place for her birthday celebration and we were all impressed. Very friendly staff. Our waitress, Kayla, went out of her way to make our visit extremely enjoyable. The menu was extensive and everything ordered was delicious. Cantina Laredo is one of my favorite Mexican restaurants in Jax. They have consistently good service and food. Their queso is delicious! The chips aren't anything too special. Their tacos are great and they have good drink options. Their service is always prompt and we never have a problem getting what we ordered. Plenty of parking. The Cantina Laredo chain is marketed as a modern twist on Mexico City cuisine. I was absolutely in the mood for something a bit more upscale and kick it up a notch after a recent underwhelming experience at another Mexican restaurant, so I opted to give them a try. I was flying solo tonight, so I was seated at a table near the bar. I was energetically greeted by the waitress, who opened by asking if I wanted to start with a margarita. I'd briefly pondered ordering one of their cocktails, but having an idea about stopping at a brewery later, I declined and asked for water. Her energy with me seemed to dip from that point forward. It didn't ruin my mood, but it was noticeable. Chips and salsa arrived in fairly short order, presented as mild and hot salsa. Both had really good flavor, and the hot salsa wasn't uncomfortably fiery by any stretch. The weird thing was, every so often I'd get a bite of a chip that tasted considerably saltier than the previous bite. It ended up being a brief science experiment at my table trying to figure out the source, but I could never repeat it to my satisfaction. My best guess was the chips might've been unevenly salted. Again, didn't ruin my mood but it got my attention. Before too much longer, the entree arrived. I'd ordered the carnitas, a signature dish of braised pork shanks with a chipotle wine sauce, vegetables and Mexican rice. The carnitas was really impressive. I enjoyed the change in texture from a slightly crispy outside to a very tender inside, and the meat came away from the bone very easily. There was flavor throughout the cut, not just on the surface with the sauce. The sauce itself was incredible - so good that I briefly wished they'd included just a tiny bit more on the shanks, but the meat is great by itself so I didn't ask for any. I found the Mexican rice on par with others I've had, but I left most of it. The overall plating was good, but the balance seemed just a touch off somehow. Perhaps a bit more color from vegetables, and a bit less rice? Overall, I had a great dinner and would definitely return again for date night to try their guacamole and another of their signature dishes. read more

When I was ready to take my boy Waylon to see Santa and knew I was going to be in the Town Center at dinner time, Maya, Stephen and I decided on Cantina Laredo as the spot we would have a meal of food(that means Maya and I decided and I told him where we were heading) . We were quickly given a patio table and a server came over with chips and salsa and started to talk to us about the margarita options and appetizers. I ordered a strawberry and jalapeno margarita and Maya went with a Strawberry as well and Hubby had a Miller Lite. We also ordered the top shelf tableside guacamole. Our server made the guac and made some small talk while he did; asking how much heat we wanted and did we want all the ingredients. It was fun to watch, but in terms of taste it was just ok..nothing special to it and no real flavor. At this point a table of what appeared to be servers from another restaurant arrived, and that's where it all went downhill. All the servers working at Cantina were busy socializing with their friends and were not focused on service. So much to the fact that even though they all arrived probably 10 -15 minutes after we did, they were served their drinks a while before we were. Even a bottle of beer. When it did finally come time to order, I wasn't really all that hungry, and decided to just snag one of the tacos from Stephens meal. He ordered a meal that comes with three ground beef tacos with cheese lettuce and tomatoes and has rice and beans on the side. When we told the server that I would be eating one of the tacos, he made sure to ask if I wanted mine with the veggie options omitted the way Stephen has asked. I did not, as I like to have toppings other than meat and cheese on my taco. Maya ordered the queso Laredo. We were talking and munching on the chips and guac and then...ran out of chips. We asked for more, and they never came. Then Mayas queso came, and we still were not brought  chips. Was she gonna eat that with a spoon? The taco to me was pretty basic, and had nothing that would make me order it again, the same with the rice and beans. I feel like it's a good thing I was not feeling super hungry when we went there because a lot of the food was left uneaten. I did go inside to visit the restroom and the interior is nice and looks a little more..upscale than your typical tex mex place. Cantina used to be my favorite restaurant for dinner and drinks. Drinks have always and still are consistent. However, the food is not good at all anymore. I've been here about 5-6 times in the last year and last weekend will be my last. The (cold) salsa had NO seasoning in it. It simply had the roasted tomatoes and other main ingredients but with NO salt or seasoning- very bland. Then I got my "nachos". I was expecting nacho chips with heaping amounts of cheese meat pico de gallo, jalapeños and shredded chicken. This was literally round chips with tons of refried beans (horrible taste) and then a chunk of grilled chicken on each. HORRIBLE. Then I asked for (warm) salsa to go because that was literally the only good thing and the waitresses didn't even give me 3/4 of salsa to go!! I got ahi tuna tacos after I sent the "nachos" back. We always have an amazing experience at Cantina Laredo when we visit. The service: we usually have all of our special occasion dinners at Cantina because they are always extremely accommodating. We usually have parties of around 25 people and there is never any issues. Last night I celebrated my birthday at Cantina and Maria, our server, went above and beyond and gave us excellent service. We requested her by name because of how amazing she always is. The food and drinks: the food is always great. Whether you just want a quesadilla or maybe fajitas you will never be disappointed. Every time I go I get the house margarita and it's always great and just strong enough to get a good buzz going. Maria was the one who really inspired me to write this review based on her phenomenal service, but you can never go wrong with most of the staff at the restaurant. read more

However about a month or so ago, they raised the prices on the happy hour menu and took off some of our favorite foods and then the quality of everything went downhill. I have never had a bad experience here. for appetizers you must try the guacamole, made fresh at the table and you can't beat it. the quest is amazing too. I always get the Veracruz enchiladas and they never miss on flavor or presentation. the margs are amazing!! yes this place is pricy but honestly worth every penny. you must get the sizzling brownie for desert. Decided to go here based of Yelp reviews. It was pretty good, wasn't the best I have had, but was above average. We started off with the guacamole, it was decent, but good guacamole gets its flavor when it sits for about 8 hours, this place makes it at the table so you get what you get. After that I had the carne asada, the steak was decent, a little fatty and chewy but overall it was good, the chimichurri sauce over the top was great and by the time I ate the steak I was more than full. 2 drinks, 1 appetizer, 2 entrees was about $75, plus tip. Went here last Friday to experience my first Happy Hour in Jacksonville and I was so pleased my friends invited me. The place was packed but service was friendly, quick, and the drinks were great. (But avoid the Pomegranate margarita). House margaritas are well mixed and will have you sliding off a bar stool. I must come back to try more items on the menu. So my wife and I like to enjoy the happy hour at the bar. Great food and drinks. Last time in we noticed happy hour menus on bar tables. So we went with our 14 yr old and sat at bar table. When asking about getting happy hour menu at table the server said food is at bar only. The place was empty, never did she ask a manager if she could make this happen. Very disappointing. I've been here quite a few times. I like that they have an outdoor area in the shade, and their guacamole is delicious (overpriced in my personal opinion since I make it quite often myself at home and know the crazy margin on it) ! But I have yet to order an entree that wows me. My last experience was very eh, with enchiladas for instance. So were the few times before that visit. I feel like I'm better off just getting a bunch of different appetizers instead as I had much better luck there. I once asked for a few slices of avocado for my 7 month old son and I literally got 2 tiny pieces and was charged $3.5 for them which to me was a little ridiculous for a lot less than a quarter of an avocado. So I think for a gourmet Mexican place, there might be some work to do to keep me coming back... I literally go there only if I'm around there and suddenly crave guacamole. read more
