For this price point I expected much higher quality of dishes. For the pork chop, I enjoyed the flavors but it was extremely over cooked and dry. To the point where it was just not pleasant to cut, chew or swallow. The ceviche was alright but the ikura was very fishy, which indicates a lack of freshness. A good start to 2026 SF Restaurant week! Ambience was great - decor, music, and noise levels were lively but not deafening. Service was great - all of the dishes were explained clearly and our table was kept neat. For SF Restaurant week, we did the $75 option. The dips and the ceviche were very good. I had the roasted half chicken (forgot tot are a picture), and it was a bit dry. The churros, while presented well, were hard, not warm, and overall were a letdown. They started off with a negative by seating us 20 min late (yes we made reservations) and the service was ok a bit awkward on the servers part. All the apps we ordered tasted exactly the same and had all the same garnish. The main dish we got Molcajete and is was just sad. Barely sizzled , Octopus was completely rubbery with no char, there was literally 1 pc of scallop and it came with only one tortilla each....what a disappointment! The flavor of it was actually good but it was poorly executed for sure. Not sure what the high ratings are about??? This restaurant had been on my list for quite some time. I decided to make the trip over for dinner for one and let me tell you, I am beyond happy with my decision to try this place! Saturday evening and pretty much all their tables were occupied. With only having opened 45 mins prior to my arrival, I was amazed to see how busy they already were. I decided to sit at the bar and although it took some time to get in my order (drink and food), the bartender was nice enough to acknowledge my presence and quickly get my order in after. To drink, I got a Michelada and it was absolutely phenomenal! Delicious "tomato" mix and it was served in a cantarito de barro. Garnishes were pretty (and yummy as it was fruit). For food, it was their happy hour so I got guacamole - 4/5. Slightly missing some salt to taste but I loved how they added slices of red onion and micro greens on top. Chips y salsa - 5/5! The house salsas were out of this world!! My favorite were the habanero and darker colored one. Taco de Cochinita de Pibil - 4/5. Delicious and paired so well with the salsas. Piña de Mariscos - 5/5! Absolutely delicious!! I was beyond impressed with this dish, presentation is beautiful, seafood is so fresh and juicy. I was already quite full and chatting with another person when my piña arrived so I ended up taking the whole thing home, cutting off the stem and just taking the pineapple itself with all the juicy goodness. The next day it was just as delicious. Spacious location, very clean and well maintained. Low-lighting but perfect ambiance. Loved the music choices as well! We live in the neighborhood and have been looking forward to trying this restaurant. The service was terrific. Roger was our bartender/server. He was so attentive and social. We had the queso fundido, sopas, panuchos and ceviche peninsula. We enjoyed it all. They have happy hour everyday they're open, which is rare to see. We sat at the bar and it was a nice ambiance. My friends and I came here for Restaurant Week brunch. Each component of the meal was well done, but it wasn't the most bang for your buck in the sense that I could've just done the regular menu. On the Restaurant Week website, their three item brunch menu was listed for $30, but they were actually charging $35. The sikil pak Mayan pumpkin dip and housemade salsas with cacao and mango were tasty, and I've never had anything like the cacao salsa, which tasted almost like a mole salsa. They were stingy with the chips though, as they gave us a small bowl to start for 3 people. In my opinion, each person should've gotten their own. They then charged us for another small bowl. For the second course, I chose the quesabirria over Yucatan style French toast. The quesabirria (one piece; their regular menu comes with two pieces) was filled with a good amount of meat, and the French toast was deliciously custardy. The third course was a choice among a sopes Benedict fusion with Cochinita pork, scrambled eggs with mole sauce, or chilaquiles. Wanted to like this spot, but the food just wasn't up to par for me. Ordered tacos, quesadillas and ceviche. The meat just wasn't that good - tried the pork and steak. Ceviche was decent though, but nothing special. Service is friendly and attentive. They did serve my quesadillas with the wrong meat though. I did tell them and the server happily replaced it. So that was great service. Came here another time and got drinks. My friend got fish tacos I believe. Those were good, but not the best. The drink was definitely good though! Fun place and very good option if you're in the Richmond and looking for Mayan food. I would definitely go back if a friend wanted to check it out! My friend got their Cornish hen and that was my favorite! Meat was trendy and juicy. I helped him finish it-- nibbling off the bone with my fingers. I had the white fish crudo and it came with a sweet potato or squash cubes and some puree and it was too sweet for my liking and not tangy enough. I also got the salnut with nopales and though it was pretty tasty, it was very greasy. I had to wipe my fingers after every bite. I had their Ixim cocktail and that was good! We started by sharing chips and guacamole along with the hot salsa--everything tasted incredibly fresh. My daughter ordered the branzino frito with frijoles charros and cleaned her plate, which says a lot. What a great experience! This is a solid 4.5 all around. Came the other night. We ordered a ton of food - the empanadas, the panucho, the mixto platter and the churros. Also the chips and salsa. We, a party of 4, left a 15% tip due to poor service, but the server manually changed our total and charged my credit card for a 25% tip instead. This is theft, plain and simple. I would not recommend this place to anyone who values honest service. Because they use mobile tablets for payment, I didn't have a physical receipt to verify, so I couldn't dispute it with my credit card company. I have tried reaching out to the manager several times to resolve this, but they have ignored my calls. Check your credit card statements carefully if you eat here. Cantina Los Mayas is one of those rare finds that surprise and delight you beyond expectations. We were greeted at the door by Juve who welcomed us and explained the Yucatán influenced menu and stopped by our table a few times during our meal. Our server was Juan and he led us through the small plates menu options we were considering. He made a few recommendations we followed and found the tastes melded perfectly. With two generous pieces of everything we found three small plates plus guacamole and chips to be more than enough. With terrific margaritas, Mexican wines (and a yummy espresso martini) the evening's experience was perfect until we had a scoop of the house made ice cream which put it over the top. There is much to love about good Mexican food and that is exactly what you'll find at Cantina Los Mayas. This spot was absolutely perfect for our big group dinner (about 10 folks). We were all seated in their private back room and we couldn't have asked for a better vibe. We could all chat with one another, even across the big table, share plates, etc. Okay back to the food. Everything was incredible. Some favorites from the night had to be the ceviche and the seafood kabobs. Can you tell I love almost anything seafood? The ceviche was packed with so much flavor and loved that everything tasted so fresh. The grilled seafood kabobs were amazing, I could have eaten 5 more. We shared plate after plate of delicious dishes like this, different kinds of tacos, chips and various salsas, and so much more. We had wine of course and ended the night as all nights should end, with churros. Very happy our group ended up here for a great night and great meal. We had queso foundido, panuchos, sopes, ceviche especial, moljete, mole, and the chamorro. Everything was delicious and their drinks were amazing. We really liked the espresso martinis, progresso, mango margarita, and rosé. The service here is top tier and they make you feel like family. We also had the desert platter and tried all the desserts and the flan was out of this world and the cabelleros ponchos con hechos and that was honestly the best dessert I've ever had. Loved this spot! Came for brunch at noon on Sunday and we were the only ones when we arrived. They take reservations on Resy though and I think dinner is their main draw. The menu was extensive for brunch and we started with the grapefruit mescal cocktails - strong and delicious! We asked for chips and salsa - definitely do this they give you a green salsa, mango, and a mole type chili salsa which is addicting. We shared the mole chicken enchiladas and panuchos with cochinita pibil. The enchiladas come with three and beans with a lot of rich mole sauce. The room is very bare bones, but the incredible food and service made up for it. We tried a bunch of things and loved it all! Super fresh ceviche, jicama and pork tacos, flavorful seafood skewers, mole chicken, chips and salsa and probably more that I am forgetting. The meal also ended with the most delicious churros. Heaven! Service was awesome. It was a long meal but it was nice to relax in between courses. The food is incredible. I'll go into more detail, but if you're wondering, you're going to have a delicious meal. I was planning a large group dinner (10 people), and came across Cantina Los Mayas and decided to reach out. We essentially finalized all details via e-mail, and they were professional, helpful, and so, so accommodating of our requests, dietary restrictions, and more. They have a semi-private back room that's perfect for this sort of thing, and we had a blast. Most importantly, the food was outstanding. We had several courses, and everything from the immensely flavorful homemade salsas to the phenomenal ceviche peninsula to the panuchos (damn!) to the jicama tacos to the seafood skewers (banderias pilche) and the kicker, the mind-blowing churros to finish off the meal...it was all delicious. There were a few minor hiccups that day due to some miscommunication between the person I dealt with via email and the staff in the restaurant that day, but everyone was so cool about trying to make sure we had a great time that it was impossible not to. I ordered the molcajete and the ingredients were fresh. I'm used to it filled to the top with sauce. The sauce you could taste the pineapple which was good but not my favorite styled sauce. The service was about two or three stars. People who sat before after us were attended before we were. It took about 15 minutes to get our first interaction with server. The quesadilla took forever to arrive. The waiter said he would check on it but never told us why it took so long. The when it arrived had charges that it shouldn't have had. We tried a couple of their wines, but honestly they were not my favorite. The waiter brought over a red wine that was actually very nice though so could've just been the ones I chose. We had an odd experience here partly because we showed up late. I'm our defense, I called the restaurant and spoke to an AI agent that said they'll hold our table for 15 minutes at least. We showed up 14 minutes late and while waiting in line to speak to the host, we watched him give our table away. They fit us in at a table near the bar acting as if they were put out and doing us a favor. (Don't forget I spoke to a robot about being late). Our waiter was the bartender i think and unfriendly. The menu is pretty extensive and fairly unusual for a Mexican restaurant so grokking it and deciding what to order was pretty tricky for my kids -- items like duck breast or lamb chops. Despite lofty ambitions, the execution on the dishes was poor, my duck over cooked and the accompaniments boring. Three out of four of us got our meals and the fourth waited and waited and waited for her tacos. No apologies or checking in. We ordered the churros which were average. They also comped us a small cup of ice cream that was lacking flavor and there was no explanation why. We went on a Saturday night and it felt like one more person in the front of house could have really helped the service and the harried employees. We ordered a bottle of Cava for the table as we heard Cantina los Mayas was known for having authentic Mexican wine, and the waitress gave us the option of having it aerated. Free chips and salsa- 5/5 salsa, unique flavors and if you ask for more it comes in these beautiful black stone bowls Empanadas with cochinita pibil- 5/5 WOW! Bursting with flavor. We jumped in with both feet and ordered so many different things on the menu, and none were less than spectacular! The sikil pak was addictive, and the trio of salsas each packed a distinctive flavorful punch. Ceviche was so unique and unusual with minimal spice and a lovely sweetness. The corn masa in several small plates was chewy and unctuous, the cochinita pibil so so flavorful, lamb shank decadent and delicious.
