On my most recent visit to San Francisco my friend knew how much I loved Mexican food and how much I missed good Mexican food here in London. So he took me to El Buen Comer for lunch. First bit of advice is take the first parking spot you find or you may to circle a few times like we did. It's SF after all and street parking is an adventure. When we walked in the had a mariachi band playing which was a bonus! Our server was quick and friendly and brought my much wanted chips and salsa and a delicious Paloma! For food I ordered chicken taquitos (rolled tacos for some) and they hit the spot for much needed comfort food! Service is great, food is great, and it is reasonably priced! read more

I've tried many dishes here (mole, chiliquilles, enchiladas, tostados, and pozole), and everything is amazing. Clear winners are the homemade tortillas and mole. Ambiance is nice and airy. They used to have an outdoor parklet during the pandemic, which was nice. Wish they could bring that back. read more

I was visiting from Hawaii and had worked in East LA for many years so I was on a serious mission in the Mission District to find a great place to eat. I FOUND PERFECTION at EL BUEN COMER!! You can tell when someone puts a lot of heart into their cooking, and the dishes at this restaurant were made with lots of love and talent! I had the Puerco en Mole Verde and it was like food from the heavens with angels singing it was SOOOO DELICIOUS!! I LOOOOOVE MOLE and their pork mole was the best I've ever had! I also had Sope de Rajas con Crema, their chips/guacamole and 3 amazing salsas. THIS PLACE IS SO AMAZING! The service was fabulous they were kind & friendly. I was SO SO HAPPY that I forgot my glasses there lol and had to return the next day (awww shucks MORE YUMMY FOOD FOR ME!!) so I had the Chicken Enchiladas with Mole Sauce and Chicken Tinga Sope. SO DELICIOUS! The people at the tables by me had Chile Relleno, Pozole Verde and a trio of tacos. I wish I could have eaten all of those dishes too they looked yummmmy!! If I had more time in San Francisco I would've gone back a 3rd, 4th and 5th time. It's a short hop from the 24th & Mission BART station, I highly recommend that everyone goes here. Everything is made in-house; no canned sauces on the chilaquiles here. The best way I can describe it is like going to your tía's house and being served real, home-cooked Mexican food made with love. As someone with roots in Mexico City, it's not easy to find dishes from CDMX that taste the way they're supposed to; but they absolutely nail it here. My go-to orders are the pambazo and the quesadilla chilanga de papas con chorizo. The chilaquiles are also to die for. We ordered their three family shareable plates -- pork mole (which came with a red sauce), the chicken mole (which was a green sauce), and the braised pork ribs with cactus cooked in a green sauce. Came by a Saturday night (~7PM) with a group of friends (5). One of my friends arrived earlier and was able go grab a table immediately, but even so, once the rest arrived there were still tables available and no line. I ordered the tacos dorados and they were very tasty. The chicken inside the tacos were a bit bland, but the combination with the beans and sauce easily fixed it. What I do have to say is that portions are on the smaller side, so keep an eye on that. Overall, this is a nice spot, the staff were friendly and have a nice cocktail selection. It was my first time at El Buen Comer and I was semi impressed. I was there on a Sunday when they opened up at 10am. The food was made to order traditional Yucatán style food serving black beans only in their dishes no love for the pinto beans here. I had the huevos divorciados and my gf had the cheese enchiladas with the mole. Overall I like the plates however, they don't have much of a breakfast selection they had like 4 plates to choose from. The tortillas were good though. What I did not like was the coffee, when the coffee came it had sugar already in it. I'm like whoa whoa buddy I like to manage my own sugar in my coffee I had to water that coffee cup down. The service was ok it wasn't great the lady server that morning was sweet the other guy looked like he didn't want to be there and was counting the minutes the other server showed up which he did and HE was cool I kinda wish I came a little later. The ambiance is also cool it's not in the hustle and bustle part of the mission it's on the border of mission and Bernal heights so there is some chance of getting parking. The kitchen looked clean and when we left it was getting busy. I would go back again to try the other 3 breakfast dishes they have but this time i will ask not to put hella sugar in my coffee. read more

An oasis off 30th and Mission St. to say this is excellent Mexican food at this establishment is and understatement . I ordered a guava aqua Fresca and it was delectable . We settled on a green sauce pozole which had a cascade of flavor which something we could easily share in one setting and an accompanied with them we ordered taco was incredible . I can see why this restaurant has been getting such high marks. It would have been a 5-stars from me- we ate here on a Wednesday night around 5:30pm. We were seated super fast, and the servers were quick to tend to our water, welcome us, and were ready to take our order whenever we were. Since we were the only ones in there, it was expected but that doesn't always mean you get attentive service, so we checked that box. The food was mixed. My wife and I both ordered their mole dishes, one green and one red. The green mole was delicious. The sauce was creamy, tasty, delivered good amount of freshness, salt and acidity and was really nice to eat along with the rice and beans. The rice and beans were typical. The pork in my mole that was tender was amazing but half the pork was as hard and dry as a rock. It kind of made me wonder if the pork was fresh. The cut was likely chunked pork butt, so it could have been that it was undercooked and didn't have enough time to tenderize yet? Not sure. Anyways, the red mole, this is supposed to be their pride and joy! Well, it was kind of weird. It didn't have the earthy, nutty and warm flavors I was expected. It's difficult to place what flavors I did have since nothing particularly stood out other than the fact that I felt it was more fruity than I'd expect. I liked it, the chicken was really good, tender, well cooked, but the mole was just okay. Not a traditional red mole at all and it didn't blow me away by any means. I did get to try the chile Relleno as well since it was another order at our table, it was super tasty. Don't have much else to say other than I enjoyed the flavor - it's not something I'd order since it doesn't have a protein. Overall, I enjoyed this meal and it's definitely some of the better Mexican I've had (in general, not just in SF) but it's not something I'd drop everything for. I'd wager some of the other dishes are likely very good judging from what I tasted, but their mole dishes are their flagship ones from what I understand and rating them purely on those, I'd give a 4/5. read more

Stopped by for Sunday brunch around 1pm. The restaurant was a bit busy but we were able to get seated immediately. They have a nice selection of cocktails and coffee drinks. The service was good as well. We ordered chips and guacamole + salsa to start. The guac was fresh and I enjoyed the trio of salsas. We also got the tacos dorados and mole con pollo (comes with 2 tortillas). Both of these dishes were delicious. My boyfriend loved the rich flavor of the mole. I ended up putting some guacamole on the tacos to take it up a notch. Plus, the portion size was good and we had leftovers to take home. Service is good but the food itself is not quite prepared in a manner compared to food I've have in SoCal and Mexico. We got the Mole con Pollo and the Costillas de Puerco en Salsa Verde con Nopales. Sometimes, you just have a feeling about a place. I can still vividly recall my very first time here, despite it being so long ago -- I felt it in my bones that I was in for something special. I had been struggling through a particularly tough period of my life, and desperately needed someplace warm, comforting, and homey to ease my thoughts and soothe the soul. Enter El Buen Comer, whose humble roots can be traced back to chef-owner Isabel Caudillo's own home kitchen in the Tenderloin more than two decades ago. I remember every last detail of everything I ordered that day. I opened with the sope de rajas con crema -- wonderfully smooth, rich, creamy, with a little hint of smokiness from the poblanos. So good. I took one bite and immediately wished I'd ordered another. Next came the Sope de Tinga -- smoky, just the right amount of heat, and a beautiful tempered sweetness from the onions. Perfectly composed. The Sope de Papas con Chorizo was interesting; the chorizo was more subtle and meaty, rather than having its usual bright, hot, sharp, in-your-face character... and honestly, I kind of liked it like that, because it let the flavor from the masa and beans shine through. The potatoes were cooked just right; soft, but not soggy, giving a well-balanced bite texture-wise. I'll say that I wished there were more chorizo (kind of potato-heavy), but this was excellent nonetheless. All three sopes shared a robust, toasty corn masa base, a nice juxtaposition against the soft black bean paste on top. A complete, balanced, well-rounded bite each and every time. Moving on -- the Mole con Pollo was astonishing. The mole rojo was sweet, deep, nutty, and earthy, displaying a wonderfully complex blend of spices and hints of several different types of chiles... and yes, a deft touch of chocolate, but not in such a forward fashion as many assume when they hear the word "mole". The chicken itself was tender and juicy. I simply could. not. stop. eating. I sometimes like to say that a good measure of whether a food is truly "great" and deserves a spot on my all-time list is if I have a hard time putting down the utensils; I tend to be somewhat careful with my caloric intake unless I am truly impressed. Well, this one never even made it out of the car with me. Do what you will with that information. Riquísimo. Every bit as impressive: the Puerco en Mole Verde. The mole had a wonderful richness; its prominent pipián nuttiness paired well with the flavor profile and spice of the chile verde and the distinct acidity from the tomatillos. Bold and herbaceous, I find myself loving this one more and more every time I get it. As an added bonus -- the tortillas de mano they serve here are incredible, and are quite possibly my favorite corn tortillas I've ever had. They are supple, yet on the thicker, denser side; the texture has a little bit of "bite," like al dente but for tortillas instead of pasta. And, of course, a wonderful full-bodied corn flavor. El Buen Comer has risen from beloved neighborhood favorite to San Francisco comfort food royalty, and for good reason. The Caudillos are kind, humble, and have put their hearts and souls into feeding the community they serve; they have more than earned every bit of the success that has come their way. Are things a bit pricey? Sure -- but I'll gladly spend on quality, heartfelt work without a second thought. Simple and soulful. Comforting and straight from the heart. However, my boyfriend convinced me to give it another try and I'm glad I did. We decided to head over for an early dinner with our baby. She's one year old now and loves trying new foods, like her parents. She especially loved the acoustics in the place, large ceilings made her little baby voice bounce off the walls, but no one seemed to mind. My guy ordered a huarache with huitlacoche and carnitas and a fish taco. I ordered the chicken tinga and shrimp taco and chicken mole tamale to share with the baby. Each plate came with a different salsa, which I loved. The salsas were delicious. The food was delicious and the service was great. I admire the authenticity of the food made here- there is no hiding uncommon ingredients, or pandering to mild-eaters who can't handle the extra spice. Our favorite- the chilaquiles- best ones I've had in the area. The café de olla is a winner too, and if you are looking for something healthier, I think they have fresh juice as well. The décor and ambiance does take you back to what'd you find in any street in Mexico city, which just helps to completely submerge you into the eating experience. read more

The torta was very fresh and big portion size, the bread was soft as well. Meat was a little dry, but nothing terrible. Good bang for your buck. This is my favorite Mexican restaurant in the city. I first came here shortly after it opened, and I knew this restaurant was special and unique. I'm happy that it is rated highly amongst food critics now. This is not a taqueria, so don't expect the menu or taste to be like a taqueria, but expect authentic flavors from Mexico. I love how they expanded the drink menu, the Mezcal Negroni being enjoyable and refreshing. The guacamole, chips, and salsas were fresh and tasty. But the one thing I would recommend is the red mole. I usually never order this from restaurants as I found most mole's poorly made. But this mole is outstanding, and I would encourage you to go just for this dish. The green mole is also a perfect choice and is something you don't see on many menus locally. The only negative for me is I found the pork in the green mole dish to be a bit dry. I would have preferred a fattier piece of meat, or perhaps the pork needed to be cooked longer to allow the pork to lose its toughness. Aside from that, everything was excellent. I would love to see the Chef/Owner take this restaurant to the next level and elevate the service and menu. read more
