A local gem for a reason! Canton City has been around since 1958 and this weekend I found out why! Was satisfied with every dish. We also ordered a LOT of food for just a table of 4. Happy to have leftovers though! (Some dishes not pictured). ALSO, one of the few places to still have crispy noodles with sauces as a little appetizer for the table! We ordered Mongolian beef, hot and sour soup, vegetable lo mien, fried rice, crispy walnut shrimp, egg rolls (vegetable & chicken), hot tea. We even ordered some almond cookies to go! And a nice surprise is that they give you one with your check. Our server was on it. He explained a little history to us and when we asked questions about how long the restaurant has been here and what's good to order, he was happy to answer. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The place was busy and full on a Sunday afternoon. Not a reservation type of place and just a good mom and pop spot to get some quality/authentic Chinese.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] It's also one of the few spots that still makes "egg foo young" so we had to try it! Love the fluffy texture on the inside and the crisp like a burger on the outside. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Ambiance is locals and bustling but also casual and home-y, which I loved cause the food speaks for itself and I felt comfortable right away.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

It's pretty good here and they have complimentary refills! They're known for their rice noodle rolls here and you can order them, along with their small dim sum menu, all day long. The wonton noodles here were just $13.98! They come with 5 large wontons and vegetables over wonton noodles. I always recommend adding chili oil. The steamed spareribs on steamed rice have some bones, just like the ones you find at dim sum. But there's a lot of meat in the steamed rice bowl for a single person. Free parking in rear parking lot. Entrance at the front on Garvey Ave. They have 2 entrances in front now. Left door for to-go orders and right door for dine-in.

Interior is hardly decorated but has statement black and red tables and chairs haha. No one was dining in, but it seemed like Steam Fresh was popular for takeout. For us, a black sesame roll (could be a snack or dessert), four orders of steamed pork siu mai, two orders of juicy pork dumplings (soup dumplings), and a beef chow fun with soy sauce dish totaled to a little over $55. Everything came out piping hot and packaged well for takeout. We only waited about 15min, which was not bad at all. We really liked the siu mai and chow fun. Both were savory and addicting. Siu mai were especially juicy and meaty; they definitely satisfied our dim sum cravings. Soup dumplings were ok - I found the wrapper to be doughy and the filling kinda plain. The black sesame roll had an interesting rolled look and a sticky, chewy, jelly-like texture. It tasted like lightly sweetened black sesame paste mixed into what seemed like a combination of mochi and agar. The small parking lot in the back is free. We got lucky finding a spot in the late morning, but when we were ready to back out after getting our food, cars were either circling the lot or waiting for someone to leave.

The other places in the area don't quite give as much food and are about the same price. I love the soy noodles that typically comes with rice porriage, I asked for a custom one since I didn't want rice porriage and they granted it (lucky me). My husband got the chicken chow mein, and everything tasted alright. The food comes with a drink and we both ordered hot HK milk tea. The portions are pretty big. I expected one pork chop, but I got 2. They were pretty sizable. The flavor was savory and umami. It was also pretty tender which I appreciate. I got my eggs scrambled and it was okay, it wasn't really seasoned. It also didn't taste like real egg? That was the only kicker in our meal. The toasts were pretty standard and it came with grape jelly. There was also a slice of orange lol. I'd say it's a nice touch. As for the macaroni, kinda disappointing because it's nothing special. It tastes as expected. I might try something else next time. The chow mein tasted pretty good. It's basically the dark soys sauce chow mein with chicken. There is mung bean sprouts and green onion in it. The ingredients are pretty simple, but they cooked it well. It had the wok smokiness that I like. Atmosphere was great. It was the weekend so a lot of families were out hanging out together. There was a little bit of a wait. I think I waited 20 some min, but they give you a beeper which I prefer over a call or text. Service was aight, as coming to a place like this, it's more about the food if you know what I mean. Would come back!

We had a family get-together and were able to order a variety of dishes. Our table ordered chestnut and chicken in a clay pot, bean curd in brown sauce, water spinach with spicy beans, Vietnamese-style deep-fried fish, sautéed clams with black bean, and the House Special Vietnamese-style sautéed lobster with braised soft noodles. The first five dishes were delivered quickly, giving us time to enjoy them before the lobster and noodles arrived. I think the lobster came last because of the prep time--and because it was the meal's grand finale. When you order as many dishes as we did, it wouldn't be unusual to prefer some items over others. But on this occasion, I couldn't find fault with a single dish. I also suspect that this restaurant is geared toward group meals, as the serving size of each plate is quite large.

I wonder if this was popular when the restaurant first opened but I just smh when being in there. Despite the decor, the food is surprisingly delicious.
