Everyone who tried it (I ordered 3 hom yu) liked it. It's not as good as Far East but nothing is. Especially the nostalgia. The girl who answered the phone was super friendly. Good fresh tasty Cantonese food, the service was good and the restaurant overall ambiance was pleasant. I had a birthday party of 12 and it was about $25 per person with drinks. We all took home take out plates ... so that was not too pricey. It's one of the last old school Chinese restaurants around. The Wor Won Ton soup arrives first. The wonton are made of generous amounts of finely ground pork stuffed into wrappers. There is also barbecue pork, shrimp, and and veggies in the salty chicken broth. I try not to get too filled up on the soup. The Almond Duck comes next. This is what I'm actually here for. It's a dish I sometimes daydream about and wonder if I have the skill to make at home. I don't. They only make it in a handful of places in the whole of LA metro, anymore. The Almond Duck consists of shredded duck meat mixed in a batter which is cooked until crispy at the edges. The brownie pan shaped Almond Duck is cut into rectangles and served on a bed of cabbbage. It is smothered with a rich savory brown gravy (sweet and sour sauce is also available instead, but I never get that) and garnished with a heaping handful of nuts. I eat it with white rice and wash it down with soothing hot black tea. It is all I need. I am happy with Almond Duck alone, but there are others in our dinner party. We also get the homyu (another hard to find dish of steamed ground pork), egg rolls, chicken chow mein with crispy noodles, and green beans. These are all good, but they are not...well... Almond Duck. The sign on the back of the building reads "Chinese Garden Restaurant Since 1962". In terms of the restaurant industry longevity, they've made it. People can be fickle and often look for the newest trends. Look at all restaurants in the area that have come and gone. Sometimes people like stability and comfort in their food. Chinese Garden provides that stability and comfort in the form of old time 60's era Cantonese-style Chinese cuisine. read more

I like the Walmart in the area, and decided to look for Chinese food nearby. I order to go, over the phone, and it was ready in 15 minutes. You can dine in or not, it's enough space. I ordered the lunch beef and broccoli, and a small shrimp fried rice. The beef and broccoli was tender and cooked well, but it had a tangy taste. The paper wrapped chicken was well marinated and tender, but it reminded me of pork. The fried rice is okay, but not your typical. What caught my eye was the vintage eatery when I looked it up on yelp. That got me curious . I love anything vintage . We were looking for something fancy just because it's Chinese new year . I always celebrate Chinese new year. I love to celebrate all races, especially if that means I can celebrate and eating their delicious food. These taste buds are worldwide baby , plus I love a good lion dance & a red envelope ! As much as this place didn't look super fancy , I was hoping the food was gonna make up for it . I really miss the original owners. They were awesome! Anyways, stopped by this evening to get my mother and I dinner. The original owners would serve you some hot tea while you waited. I felt like the waiter rushed me to decide what I wanted. He called in the order and brought it out 10 minutes later. I added up the bill in my head. It was $45.75...he gave me a bill for $75.00!! I said "What? This is wrong!" He left and came back saying that the calculator was not working right. I had to ask him for one item he forgot to give me. He literally threw it into the bag! When I signed the receipt, I added a $5 tip. He said, "Oooo, a whole five dollars!!" sarcastically! I didn't dine in. He only took my order and handed me the bag AND tried to overcharge me! WOW! It was kind of musty when I walked in. I was immediately greeted. There were not too many people. I had my mind set on egg foo young. I got a combo with egg flower soup, fried shrimp, egg foo young, fried rice, and chow mein. I also ordered a side of paper wrapped chicken and sesame balls. I was in for a shock! The portion size was enormous. I finished the soup, egg foo young, and 2 wrapped chicken. Took everything else to go. Everything was tasty. I never got an opportunity to finish the chow mein. This is a really great family style restaurant. Service was fast and the waitress/host was super sweet. The shoyu that the fried rice was tossed in was a bit overpowering but still really good. We had The wor wonton mein soup, shrimp and broccoli, shrimp and chicken chow mein, orange chicken, teriyaki chicken, egg rolls, mushroom chicken and beef and broccoli. Everything was EXQUISITE!!! 3/18/23 My mom and I have gone for years and decided to try it again after the pandemic slowed down. We hadn't eaten all day and lunch specials are over at 3pm and we just made it. Our waiter was a gentleman and he was very nice. Took our order and we asked for no MSG (My mom is allergic). The inside looks the same although it was stuffy in there and after sitting there for 30 min it started to get hot. People were coming in for orders to go and only 3 tables with ours were filled. Lunch special came Egg Flour soup. It's my favorite of all time but this one was like drinking water with a drop of egg and a few green onion slices. We asked the waiter way it was so watery and he openly admitted they had to cut some costs. So disappointing. I ordered #9 Chinese Greens with beef, Egg roll and white rice. My plate was huge. The rice was rather dry like it needed a little more water to cook in. I had to put soy sauce on it to make it better. The beef with greens was ok. Beef cooked perfectly but it seemed to lack flavor. Seemed like the cornstarch and broth it cooked in was the only type of flavor it had. The chicken eggroll never seems to amaze me. It was delicious and I wish I had just ordered the appetizer of that instead of the meal. Mom got #10 Mushroom chicken, Eggroll and white rice. She said the mushroom was from a can and was rather rubbery, not fresh at all and the dish was lacking the flavor. Now to the people who ate there and continue to eat there I won't ever tell you not to go. My family has gone here even before I was born so we know what it used to taste like. This place is great for when you're craving old school vintage Americanized Cantonese food from the 20th century. They do it better than anybody else around. The San Gabriel Valley is world renowned for "authentic" foods from China, but try to find Egg Foo Young or Chop Suey in 2022. This place got the job done but I can't say I'd rush back. We were easily seated during lunch time and the service was good. However, the shrimp fried rice had absolutely no flavor. I'm not sure how that's possible but it was incredibly lacking. The shrimp chow mein was definitely better and pretty tasty. They share a parking lot so parking isn't an issue.
