Tried this restaurant the other night. I was pleasantly surprised. I got the mongolian shrimp and the chow mein. I totalley loved it! The chow mein was the best. I loved the noodles they used. Don't Go Deep-Fried. Sauce and Meat. It's the Future. You simply do not understand how badly I want to give Canton Low five stars. I love them deeply. Their Hunan Chicken is my nectar. It is delicious, but there are rough patches on the menu and the food is sometimes not quite so loved as it should be. Firstly, a lot of complaints that people tend to have about Canton Low is the service. I love the service and I'm probably a regular in there. Hell, they know my order by heart and my girlfriend's at this point. Let's be frank: They are very minimalist in the service. You get the water, you get your order taken, you get your food, you get regular refills in a timely manner. You do not get smiles or laughs or any of that stuff. Some of the locals do, some of them want those things. I do not. I like that I get a polite, if impersonal, meal from Canton Low. In fact, their disinterested but prompt and attentive service is one of the things that keeps me coming back. I don't want to be friends with Cindy from Tulsa who smiles like there's a gun to her head and is SUPER EXCITED ABOUT OUR SPECIALS OHHHHH GOOOOOODDDD KILLLLLL MEEEEEEEE!!!!!11!1!! I can't do that. It's not me. It's not how I eat. I want to talk to the people at my table, not the wait staff. If there is a problem, I will bring it up when the wait staff stops by. I do not need to be asked. I will tell. They ask at Canton Low. Once, then they refill your drinks and bring you your check. It is bare minimum service and BY GOD I LOVE IT. It's a point of disagreement I'm going to have with people who want that sort of service and I understand where they're coming from. Canton Low is a place I go to eat a delicious meal that is the same every time and then I go away from Canton Low and do other things. I am not there for a dining experience. It is what it needs to be for me and I appreciate that. But what is a restaurant except for the food? Let's talk about food. Hunan anything and Yuxiang anything will be delicious. The chicken, the shrimp, the pork. Doesn't matter. Their sauces are amazing and they make the meat amazing. They are not revolutionary or inspired by Neveau Chinese Fusion or whatever. It's a Chinese place with delivery and the food is that food, just done with great sauces. Aside from the meats with sauces, there's the Hot and Sour soup which, some days, is too watery and not flavored strongly enough and other days is among the best Hot and Sour soups I've had, full stop. It's hard to know what it'll be from day to day. Too peppery? Soup perfection? Could be either. Comes included with the lunch special, so who cares? Well, I do. But yeah, it's not going to ruin your meal if it's not spot on at lunch. If you buy it separate, well, sometimes it's not amazing. But sometimes it really, really is. It's a gamble I roll the dice on every time I go. Most times it's great, sometimes no. Still worth the risk. The menu, however, is not without its failings. Since I first ate there some years ago, there has never been a particularly deft hand with the deep-fried pieces of the menu. This is something that is a real shame because many people trying Canton Low for the first time are going to do the American thing and rest on the laurels of Orange/General Tso's chicken or some deep fried something else. I have yet to have a delicious deep fried entry from the Canton Low menu. Just pretend they aren't on there. And if you choose to, know that both the sauce and the batter will be heavy handed and unimpressive. You've been warned. It seems strange, but that's how it is. So obviously with those shortcomings, you can't slap a five up there. I love Canton Low, I moved out of El Segundo to Torrance and I still drive up as much as I can be bothered just to go to Canton Low and get the Hunan Chicken and a big box of white rice. It is a place that is close to my heart for many, many reasons but it's the food that keeps me coming back. Every time I put that first bite of an order of Hunan Chicken into my stupid face, I can't help but smile. It's good, it's warm, and it makes me want more. That's all good food needs to do. Is the entire menu great? No. Is some of it exceptional? Yes. And for an understated places like Canton Low, that'll do. Go there for lunch. Don't get anything fried. You'll be happy. read more

I wish I had come with several friends so we could share dishes. Started with egg rolls which were crispy, but not greasy and you could taste all the veggies inside. Good start! I then had the shrimp with lobster sauce, which is a personal favorite. It would be better if fresh mushrooms, carrots, and peas were used, but the sauce was perfect and the shrimp were plump and delicious. Service was quick and attentive even with their phone ringing off the hook. Portions were large so I had plenty left to take home. Hi Chinese Food Fanatics: We foodies in LA know that there are few really worthy Chinese restaurants, although there are so many great Thai restaurants. Well, here is a sleeper in the little El Segundo area (just north of Hermosa Beach, near LAX). Its a cozy spot in a really cute neighborhood...The food is really really good, authentic old school Chinese. Try the Steamed Fish with Ginger and Scallions, or Shrimp and Lobster Sauce...or their Egg Foo Young...its just all really delicious. The Young Chow Fried Rice is fantastic: they make it with Chicken, Shrimp, and Pork (or beef) and NO SOY SAUCE. We always ask them to add extra egg....great WonTon soup as well. The Orange Chicken, Bean Curd and Three Flavored Sizzling Rice Soup was excellent with very large portion, so delusions I will drive 3 hours just to come to this place again. Stopped by for lunch w/co-worker who was in the mood for "bad" Chinese food. And Canton Low delivers. They have a few lunch special options for every affordable prices ($7-10). We ordered our food off their lunch menu and got our soups right away. I have to deduct a star for finding a weird aluminum foil wrap in my soup, which was already very salty. Otherwise I suppose it was okay. Water and tea are customary and were refilled through the quick meal. And when I say quick, I mean it. Our food came out super quickly! I ordered the bbq pork lo mein and coworker ordered the sweet & sour chicken. The lunch combo comes in as a bento box style combination: salad, rice (fried or steamed white), egg roll, your dish and aforementioned soup. It tasted very decent for what it was. Nothing extraordinary, but for about the same money I'd rather just go down to Big Wok. Our bill was just shy of $15 w/o tip. Went to lunch here with a co-worker. I ordered the lunch special with the spicy Hunan beef with broccoli and onions and fried rice. They started off with the hot n sour soup. The soup was ok, nothing special. The spicy beef was tender, but unfortunately there wasn't much of it. Mainly broccoli and a few scattered onions. The meal also came with hot tea and a vegetable spring roll. The spring roll was very basic with cabbage inside. This place isn't too exciting, but my co-worker seems to enjoy it so I just tag along. Visited for the first time earlier this week and was pleased with my lunch. Service was friendy and quick, and we enjoyed our food. I ordered the Sweet & Sour Pork lunch special and it was delicious (I'm surprised to read that someone got sick from it more than once). My friend had the Pork Lo Mein lunch and that was delicious as well. The restaurant is not fancy and did smell of grease when we first entered. This place had my favor Chinese food for many years, lately it has been very disappointing. The service has never been over the top but nothing out of the ordinary. On May 1st 2018, I ordered Cashew Chicken to go, it was one of the worst Cashew chicken I have ever tried. Disgusting. Good is just a notch below Little Asia (RIP). Lunch specials are a good variety but about $2-$3 above what Little Asia charged. The dumbest thing is only one person in the restaurant can take orders. If there's a big group of people ahead of you you have to wait your turn. This is bad in my case because my lunch is only from 11-12. This is the real deal - old school sit down Chinese food made with cooks in the back and the owner at the register. English is a second language here. Wanton soup is great. Fried rice is great. and they will even make "healthy" for you if you ask for less oil or steamed. This is not PF Changs - it more like 1970's. Prices are good too. read more

This place re-opened recently, and I thought it was better. Ordered take out couple times in December 2017 and the food was good! Yang chow fried rice was solid, chow mein was very tasty, several other dishes. Everything was decent and happy that we had good Chinese food again in ES. But last night (1/23/18), the food was terrible! Ordered orange chicken and got fried chickenless breaded nuggets. No meat. The Budha feast was overcooked vegi's with tasteless sauce! I don't know how you can ruin this dish?? And the hot & sour soup was SO PEPPERY, it was not edible. We barely ate anything and threw it all away. It was very bad. Not sure if we'll go back again. I don't know if they have different chefs, but it really is hit & miss. I really had higher expectations for this place, but very disappointed. The hostess was very "blah too". The only thing missing was flavor... Dropped by Canton Low for lunch with a friend and had the Mongolian Beef dish. Soup was good, egg roll was good, beef was tender and nicely prepared, it just wasn't at all flavorful, so I can't recommend it. Love this place. I asked the manager how the food was consistently good for the four years we have eaten there and he replied; "Same chef 30 years." When we moved from El Segundo to Torrance we kept going there. Disregard negative comments because they are from people who prefer a different recipe and just complain. This place is amazing, this is my first time here with the family of 6 and the service and food was on point. Ordered the food and drinks, drinks came back extremely fast and food was about a 7 minute wait time, which was perfect timing. This revenue is long overdue, and for that I apologize to Canton Low. I am Chinese, and picky about restaurants. I order to go food from here several times a month, and have been doing so for years. Canton Low is my "go to" place for chicken and broccoli. Because I have dietary restrictions, they have no issue modifying it. When other restaurants try to modify their dishes for me, they are often tasteless. Not so with Canton Low: though modified, it tastes AMAZING !! It is consistently fresh, with huge pieces of chicken, and yummy. My husband really likes their hot and spicy chicken. That's saying a lot as he's usually "just okay" on Chinese food. The portions are plenty and the service is quick and good. Not bad, not great. Just ok. Do you like Chinese food? How about Chinese food that come out fast at a reasonable price? With nice size portions and friendly servers? How about all this with free parking in a main street setting? If your answer is yes than this is the place for you. There were some flys buzzing around throughout the meal but besides that, the high NACL content of the sauce and the general lack of patronage this place kicked ass. Next time I want to get it to go and eat it with chop sticks as me and some cops work on a cold case.
