Had an amazing time having dinner here with my friend. Melissa was our server and she was the absolute best! Super friendly, attentive, and helpful in giving recommendations. Clean and modern open aesthetic space and they offer a variety of food and drink options. Had high expectations for the chicken and shrimp soup dumplings but it wasn't my all time favorite. I did absolutely enjoy the pork mapo tofu, full of flavor and paired perfectly with an order of white rice. The baby bok choy was flavorful and went well with rest of the food.

This was my first time here, and I really wanted to like it more than I did. The space itself is beautiful--modern, open, and thoughtfully designed with high ceilings, warm lighting, and a semi-open kitchen that adds to the energy of the room. It definitely feels like a great spot to meet up with friends or enjoy a lively meal. Unfortunately, the food just didn't live up to the setting. I ordered the veggie dumplings, and they were underwhelming--they really should have been labeled spinach dumplings, because that's pretty much all the filling tasted like. The scallion pancakes were another miss, lacking any real scallion flavor, and the salt and pepper crispy tofu was neither crispy nor particularly seasoned. If there was salt and pepper on it, it was barely noticeable. On the positive side, the service was excellent. Even though the restaurant was clearly busy, everything came out quickly, and the staff was friendly, attentive, and efficient. My glass of wine was also a highlight and honestly ended up being the most enjoyable part of the meal. Overall, while the ambiance and service are strong, the food just didn't hit the mark for me, especially for the price point. I don't see myself returning, but I do hope they tighten up the execution because the space really has a lot of potential.

I can eat at Dan's everyday. The food is always so good and the customer service is always even better!! Today my server Isaac went above and beyond for me. After a tough day at work he suggested some great wines and new menu options. Thank you Isaac for being such a gem. I'll definitely be back soon!!

This is easily one of my favorite restaurants in LA. We used to order from dan modern when we lived in Pasadena but were so thrilled to see a location in PV. Everyone is always friendly, restaurant is spotless, tables have a lot of room, and despite always being crowded the wait is always minimal. I am terrible with names but the server who took care of our table when we sat outside with my parents who were visiting and she had our table again this evening is fantastic, attentive, friendly - I will update my review when I get her name! The food (not all ordered in one visit): XLB - any version is super tasty, light, delicious! Scallion pancake - light and flaky, great to share but a decent portion so might be a lot for two if you're getting other food! Popcorn shrimp - not overly fried, really tasty, love the spicy mayo. Mapo tofu - i thought the mushrooms overpowered bit on this one. String beans with garlic - I've had this at a few places in LA and this is by far the best version, these green beans are amazing! Short rib Dan mein - Savory, sweet, the short rib is super tender yet fatty - highly recommend! Chicken noodle soup - my go to takeout order, gingery/comforting it feels very nourishing. Dungeness crab fried rice - just order it, it's our favorite thing in the world! It's our go-to favorite spot and I highly recommend you give it a try!

Love this place! Everything is delish. There isn't a dish I don't like. I normally get chicken soup dumplings and seaweed/ tofu salad. When I'm hungrier or with other people I venture out to the beef roll, Dan Dan noodles, and the spicy oxtail soup. All amazing and highly recommend. Service is lovely as well, everyone is very kind and welcoming. Tonight Isaac was our server who was very attentive and gracious. I will be back!

This is my favorite restaurant ever the food never disappoints The service always in point Our Water Jesus was so wonderful great attitude and so knowledgeable about the food great hospitality great food .and ambiance .

I came for dinner last week with a friend, and the place was quite busy! The waitress gave us plenty of time to order, and was friendly about us taking a long time to decide. I went with the spicy pork soup dumplings as an appetizer, which were soo good and came out piping hot. I also ordered the short rib Dan mein noodles. Honestly, they tasted like pretty standard thick noodles. It was good, but I wasn't crazy about them.

Delicious green beans and dumplings! Serving size was a little smaller than what I was expecting for the price, but it was definitely a delicious choice! Parking can be a little tough: it helps to come with company for order pick up. Service was speedy, and the entire mall decor was very nice!

We were disappointed with our experience at this restaurant! As for food: We ordered Dan Dan noodles (note restaurant is called Dan) and the noodles were horrible. The noodles did not have taste. They were bland. The beef roll was also tasteless. The pork and shrimp dumplings in chili oil was slightly better in taste. None of these food items were worth the price of what we paid. If I came back, I would not order these items again. As for drink we ordered boba Thai tea and beer. The Thai tea was ok. The beer came in a pint class but was only 75 percent full: we later found out that it was due to the beer not being on tap, but in a bottle. The beer should have been served in a smaller glass so it didn't look like customers were being ripped off. As for service: we felt our service was poor. When we were looking for the server, we found in the kitchen when we needed him. And he was on the phone. When we looked for him again, we saw him walk outside of the restaurant . I guess it was end of his shift but there was never a hand over. Odd! And when we needed assistance ordering drinks, we had to get up from our seat and go to the bar. We left still hungry and thirsty, but at this point we gave up ordering anything else. Also we did not want to pay more for poor service and food. As for bathroom: dirty. Toilet paper and seat covers on the floor. Plus the bathroom stall did not have toilet paper.

    Short Rib Dan Mein (Takeout)
    Lena N.

TL;DR: The food is solid, the pricing isn't. I showed up around 4:30pm on a Wednesday, so there were only a few people eating in the restaurant. It's not easy to find parking on the streets surrounding the restaurant regardless of what day and time it is. If you go during the less busy hours, you can usually find available metered-parking spaces along the corner of Corinth Ave and W Olympic Blvd. It's about a five-minute walk to the restaurant from there. I ordered the short rib dan mein ahead of time for pickup. The person over the phone said that it'd take ~15 minutes to prepare the dish. When I arrived, there wasn't a person to greet me and ask if I was dining in or ordering takeout. I just assumed that there was only one host/server working who was already occupied with other patrons. Since no one could greet me, that made the pickup process a bit complicated for a newcomer like me. I took a guess and walked toward the right side of the restaurant where the kitchen is. That side also has the entrance to the outside seating area. The one server noticed me within a few minutes and quickly handled the pickup. Now onto the order itself. This was my own fault for not asking, but the bag holding the order didn't come with utensils. Seeing as I ordered a noodle dish, this fact did not spark joy. So, if you order takeout, just be mindful of that. I picked my order up soon after it was packaged, so it was still hot - as in, the kind of hot where you breathe like a dragon when it's in your mouth. So that was a plus! Who likes a lukewarm or cold noodle dish? The actual dish was delicious. The noodles, the short rib, the mushrooms, and vegetables were all savory and flavorful. There is nothing more disappointing than a bland noodle dish. Thankfully, I was spared of that disappointment with this dan mein! Now onto the pricing. While the dish was delicious, I simply cannot forgive the pricing. I can't individually blame the restaurant, though. Everything is expensive nowadays. But twenty-four dollars and forty-two cents before tips? For this amount of food? The portion size is not plentiful enough for me to drop a good and lovely $24.42 on this dish, which is a bummer because I still crave it sometimes. If you don't mind spending a bit more, I'd recommend trying the short rib dan mein. The dish is solid! - Maybe not generously portioned or incredible enough to make it worth chipping away at your financial stability, but still a nice noodle treat. We all deserve a nice treat, whether it be sweets or a noodle dish.

It was a but busy when we got there but luckily we got seared pretty shortly after arrival. We originally wanted to sit at the bar, but opted for a table for less wait time. When first looking at the menu we were shocked by the prices. I knew immediately i wanted to get the hui tou potstikers with pork and noodles. We ended up adding on the hongkong style wontons too. To my suprise the wontons arrived in a delicious and warm broth, keeping them perfectly moist and plump. The broth was so delicious even on a hot day, tasting faintly of sesame and scallion. Despite both dishes being pork they were so different and equally amazing in flavor. The pan fried potstikers which were CRISPED TO PERFECTION especially reminded me of black bean shortribs that you get from dimsum, fatty but hearty and had me wanting more and more each bite. The minced pork noodles were to no suprise, so good. Noodles tasted fresh, the sauce was umami with mushrooms and pork. While im not the biggest fan of mushrooms, i still ate it up. I feel it would be so good with some picked cabbage too to complement the saltiness. Most notable thing... THAT CHILI OIL. We probably used almost half the jar left at the table. It wasnt spicy at all, but it had this flavor that i genuinely have never tasted before. The texture of the chilli and sesame and the nutty flavor had me in awe. Enough to take two jars home... i would do it again. Servers were so quick, made sure everything we needed was at the table. Regardless of the crowd we were met with promptness and generosity. This that wonton place your girl tells you not to worry about forreal. Will be coming back despite the long drive from home.

That was my first mistake -- they don't even serve mu shu pork. That one's on me for not checking the menu first. I ended up getting my kung pao chicken and settled for the Mongolian beef, and veggie egg rolls. The Mongolian beef I could definitely pass on. The kung pao chicken was good at first, but somehow lost its flavor as the meal went on. The egg rolls were just okay. Nice and crispy on the outside, but too mushy on the inside for my liking. I was also pretty surprised (and a lot sad) that they didn't have hot mustard. The tea was really good though! Service was fine. The server was attentive, just clearly busy keeping up with all the takeout orders coming through. Ambience is definitely on the lower side here, so don't come expecting a nicer Chinese restaurant. Their drinks also stood out in terms of creativity and the amount of work that goes into them. Overall, I put this on par with Baroo in terms of creativity, service and flavor.

The menu is New American with Chinese influences served as a four-course prix fixe set, with each course having three choices, and optional additions are available. (There is an à la carte menu available in the bar area.) I went very carnivorous on my selections, choosing the beef tongue carpaccio, duck sausage, and beef short rib. There was not a bad dish among these: The tongue was tender, soft, and delicate. The duck sausage was fantastically good as well; served with an apple jam atop Swiss chard, it was a sort of Chinese-Alpine fusion cuisine of which I never envisioned but instantly wanted more. While delicious, the short rib was overshadowed by its cabbage accompaniment. My server told me it takes four days to make that dish, and I would have happily ordered a full dish of just that. The kaffir lime curd dessert was light and balanced, perfect after the heavier meat courses and like a small vacation to Thailand on a plate. The one dish I did not love was the Chongqing fried chicken course I added. The chicken itself ― a boneless leg quarter ― was a large portion and well-prepared, but the sauce covering it was a thick layer of chilis (which, thankfully, were not inedibly hot) and straight oil, lots of oil. Eating so much oil like that made for gastrointestinal discomfort the rest of the night. The soy pickles helped cut the greasiness a bit, but they weren't vinegary enough to get that level of oiliness off the palate. The duck fat rice, though quite good, also did not help much given its fattiness. Given the chance, I definitely would have requested the oil-sauce on the side. I did appreciate the crunchiness of the batter, which never went soggy despite being soaked in that oily puddle for a long time. I did not find any wines by the glass that bowled me over, so I stuck to cocktails, which were good. Service was warm, personable but not intrusive, and brisk, while the room has the comfortable feel of a mid-century modern den complete with well-worn cookbooks on the shelves lining the walls. I would happily return to try the bar menu with cocktails or when the prix fixe options change. At $68 for four courses, Firstborn's prix fixe is one of the best fine dining offers in L.A. right now, and it makes a trek up to Chinatown worthwhile.
