Margherita pizza (small), at Canton Pizza + Kitchen in Canton, CT.
    Tom D.

Tried Canton Pizza + Kitchen yesterday -- we were underwhelmed. Ordered two small pizzas & a side of meatballs (2). My first impression when I opened the box to my sausage pizza was that it looked like it might have been meant for the "Kiddie menu". Very amateurish. My wife's Margherita pizza "looked" better, but she felt it was bland & boring. The meatballs were alright, but overall, we were disappointed. For almost 50 bucks, we were expecting better quality. At least our dog was happy, she enjoyed chewing on the crust. We briefly thought about coming back a 2nd time in the future for an Italian dinner, but figured if they can't make a decent pizza, we wouldn't trust them preparing anything else. It's almost impossible to find quality pizza up here in the NW corner of CT. We'll continue the search.

"Goodbye, Joe, he gotta go, me oh my oh" (Hank Williams) Within a very short time frame, the Farmingtom Valley saw two Joe Pizza restaurants close. The Simsbury location is still vacant, but thanks to the owners of Farmington Pizza + Kitchen, the Canton location has now been reborn as Canton Pizza + Kitchen. The interior looks pretty much the same as we remember it from the Joe Pizza Days with a big ordering counter up front and two rows of booths and seats in the dining room and an overflow dining room in the back. The Canton menu is very similar to the Farmington menu. Three months ago we ordered a $12.95 Chef's Salad from Farmington. It was loaded with Romaine Lettuce, red onion, grape tomatoes, peppers, and  ham, turkey and provolone cheese ribbons. The version we just bought from Canton was somewhat different from it's Farmington predecessor. First of all, the price jumped one dollar to $13.95. And that increase came with a corresponding decrease in ingredients, as the peppers and ham were no longer included. Go look at my photo, the amount of turkey and provolone was quite underwhelming. I am one thousand per cent positive that the amount of meat we had in Farmington was much more than what we received in Canton. And we paid a dollar less for it. I'd like to go back and try something from their deep sandwich, grinder, panini, wrap, burgers, calzone, pizza and pasta menus. But our first impression, based on the case of the more expensive but less ingredient salad, was a bit perplexing.

food is really not good. Service is atrocious. And the music is ear piercing. Go literally anywhere else.

Saw there was a happy hour menu, so we tried the meatballs and pizza for apps and she got the Pinot Grigio and I tried the Cabernet. I could only get down barely half the glass of cab and when I called her over to send it back, she never asked if it was ok etc. or why I did t finish it. And I did ask her how the cab was before I ordered it and she said great! Clearly never tried wine before. I also saw that I was charged for the bad wine. No biggie, but in a better place they would have tried to make it right. I tried a Hendrick's and tonic next, and the tonic water was definitely flat. I tried to ask nicely if the tonic water was flat and she never even tried it, just saying oh no, it's fine. Very disappointed with that service and the drinks were terrible. As for the food, they might not have any spices in the kitchen as the meatballs could have had some seasoning added so they didn't taste so bland! Pizza was eh at best. Someone should teach them about salt and how a little bit brings out the real flavors! We won't go back...the wait staff seemed more interested in talking to each other than they did the customers. And the side of the bar nearest the door was cold as they kept one set of doors open, so always a cold blast coming in. No wonder so many restaurants are failing these days.

These days it's hard to find a cafe that isn't overpriced and better than just average. But Toasted Oat hits the high points of quality of cook on the food, even if the ingredients may not all be top notch. They have breakfast sandwiches, bowls and scrambles, as well as regular sandwiches, salads and burritos. We enjoyed the regular breakfast sandwich with spinach and cheese (subbed the meat but wish the spinach had been cooked in - $7) and the breakfast scramble which included 2 eggs, 3 veggies, cheese, protein all mixed/cut up together, as well as hash brown (didn't exactly look homemade?) and toast ($11). Everything was served in to-go containers so the looks weren't the best but makes sense given the place and that most people probably don't dine in. You order at the counter and they bring you your food. Everything takes time to come out so you know it's done to order. They also have some coffee and tea. They had a few coffee cake items in a glass display but didn't look homemade either. It feels like a cafe should have more selection of pastries but again bother me. Service was friendly and patient. The actual location isn't that great visually either. There is one longer table and a few smaller ones, but it's not a big place and not decorated to impress (fine by me!) It is located in a small nondescript plaza with an Indian market. Small parking lot. Wish this small business well!

Toasted OAT Cafe in Canton has been here a long time. I'm not sure why I haven't stopped here…read morebefore. My brunch buddy and I had to make a last minute change of plans, so we landed at Toasted OAT today for breakfast. There are a few tables in a roped off section of the parking lot to eat outside. Inside, there's a long table in the middle, 3 smaller tables on the left, and a bar at the window. We had no problem getting a seat, but it seems like it's more of a take-and-go place than a destination to eat. There are a lot of customizations you can make to your food order, which is more easily done in their online ordering system--but there's a $1.95 service fee to use it. My friend and I made our decisions based off of that system but ordered at the counter. While there are a lot of breakfast and lunch options, there aren't many beverages. Coffee, hot chocolate, and tea are the mainstays for warm beverages, and all cold beverages other than cold brew coffee are prepackaged bottles in a cooler and run just short of $4. Every order, whether it's take-out or eat-in, is served in disposable packaging with disposable utensils. I ordered the Reuben bowl without eggs and a side waffle with syrup. Kind of love that I could get a side waffle. It took a while for the food to come out. It felt longer than it should have been for how few people were there, but I didn't time it. My waffle was cold. The tator tots in the Reuben bowl, however, were cooked perfectly, as were my friend's hash browns. Everything tasted great. If you're looking for the picturesque weekend brunch experience, this isn't it. But if you want a quick bite that's well made with quality ingredients and no-fuss beverages, you'll be very happy here. Even more so if you want to take it on the go.
