My husband and I had SUCH an enjoyable experience during the Halloween weekend brunch that was held at the Canyons. Brandon was our server and we couldn't have asked for better hospitality, service and attentiveness! We were one of a few patrons sitting outside and the view and weather were enough to create a positive ambience, and Brandon's warmth and energy was the frosting on the cake! The chilaquiles and chorizo hash are two of our favorite menu items and we went with those choices. After a minor kitchen error on one of the items, Brandon was incredibly speedy in rectifying the error and getting food out again. We were so appreciative of the urgency and how on top of service he was! It means a lot when one's server truly values your experience as a patron, and Brandon exuded a specific care through and through. I thoroughly enjoyed brunch here last Sunday. My wife and I were seated at a table on the patio, which had ocean views and allowed us to watch the golfers. There was a keyboardist playing inside that could be heard faintly on the patio, which added to the ambiance. I ordered the short-rib hash with a poached egg. It had a nice sauce and was delicious. It was a good portion, also. My wife ordered a short stack of pancakes, which was huge. Each pancake was the size of the plate. I also ordered a bottom-less mimosa...such a deal at $20. I had a choice of juices and settled on orange and pineapple. Tano was our server. He was very nice and attentive and quick to return with any requests. My wife and I will definitely return. Bottom Line: Nice views in a quiet setting with casual, American cusine. Canyons is located at The Crossings, Carlsbad's municipal golf course. Canyon's looks out towards the Pacific Ocean and overlooks the golf course. The space is large and generic as it is also used for banquets, weddings and such. Even though the restaurant is big I feel like its quiet which I like. The food isn't fancy but is fresh, comforting and tasty. They have a chopped chicken salad that I really enjoy and both the truffle fries and sweet potatoe fries hit the spot. I've attended various private events at Canyons and the food has always been good - not gourmet or great, but certainly adequate. Service is a hit or miss. On my most recent visit it was perfect but there has been lots and lots of misses in the past. read more

Overall, I'd rate this place 3.5 stars. The pros: - great views of the Crossing's golf course and Carlsbad (slight view of the ocean as well) - quiet environment (good if you want to be able to have conversations) - spacious restaurant with indoor and outdoors seats, great for large parties - plenty of free parking - variety of food options including salads, sandwiches, burgers, and entrees. The cons: - I made a reservation for a large party but when we got there, it said "please seat yourself" and nobody was there to greet us. I had to go track down a waiter to help us. - Though our young waitress was sweet and friendly, she took forever to recognize we were seated, get our menus/drinks, refill our drinks and clean up the table. - the food was okay but nothing special. Most entrees were between $14-20, but not sure if it was worth that price. - make sure you check the tab as they automatically add 20% gratuity for parties of 8 or more but did not disclose that. Have enjoyed a number of Sunday Brunches here which feature complimentary Champagne and Mimosa's. They have an omelet bar and prime rib along with an assortment of traditional brunch items. As far as bang for your buck goes this is a great value considering all the high quality food and drinks. Our first trip staying in Carlsbad and got a recommendation from another couple at our pool. We took a walk the next morning and ended up at The Crossings and the Canyons Restaurant for Brunch....so glad we did! Joyce waited on us and brought two glasses of champagne, we ordered our Veggie Omelette with Yukon Gold potatoes and it was just SOOOOO GOOD!!! We couldn't eat all of it there was so much so we took what was left for another "breakfast" the next morning. We noticed they had Happy Hours every night from 3:00 until 6:00pm and that night was "Burger Night." We went back to see Ryan and enjoyed some wonderful Chardonnay along with a delicious Bleu Cheese Burger and Truffle Fries....again...just delicious!! I really want to have a good experience with the food at this place but I've been highly disappointed about three times now. So, it's time for some encouragement to management. Dear management, most customers (80/20 rule) are ok paying a little more if quality is reciprocated. On the other hand, the same customers will either never return or spread the word of negative experiences, hence I'll probably do both. Please don't claim to have some 'fancy pants chef' with an outstanding menu when neither is delivered. If you're going to provide so-so food at best, charge appropriately and don't advertise otherwise. Bottom line, weak drink's, poor beer selection (no dark), hideous food ($15 street taco's) having ~1 tablespoon of meat/taco, equal to 3 tablespoons total, topped off with cold corn on the cob, reallly? We arrived at around 5:30 pm for dinner for a party of 8. There was an event going on around this time so it was a little bit hectic. The hostess greeted us promptly and we were seated in the patio. There was a musician who sang and played the guitar so the overall ambiance was nice and welcoming. The server was friendly but did not know the menu. She did say that she doesn't usually work the main dining area and was more familiar with the happy hour/bar menu. Fine. I ordered cioppino which cost $26. It looked great but unfortunately this is where the positivity traits of this restaurant ended in our experience. This dish was extremely spicy. I can handle Korean spice and Thai spice. But this dish was so spicy I couldnt taste anything else. I couldn't taste if it was salty, garlicy, sweet, etc. It was just spicy. The menu did not describe the dish as being spicy and I have ordered cioppino from other eateries so I have an idea of what it should taste like but man, Olive Garden can probably make this dish better. We also ordered a NY steak ($27) and the person who ate this gave it a rating of 2/10. It was bland and charred lol. I went yesterday (Sunday) with a friend. I had been before. It was great the first time. But this time. Most the food was cold. Seemed to be sitting out quite a while. We picked through the Sunday brunch. Biscuits/gravy, sausage/bacon, scones, ribs (not cooked well, very tough), salmon ( tasted great, chicken (also good, 2 salads dressing was everywhere, not much fruit, and nice display of desserts although they had been sitting there for quite a while and were dry. Our plates sat on our table after we ate for so long flies started to crawl on them. It was gross. Either way both of us came home and felt sick for the rest of the day. Everyone keeps telling me the food is good here. I just don't get it. Went for breakfast with my neighbor. We both had the Sunrise scramble (eggs, mushrooms, tomatoes, feta cheese, $8). It comes in a bowl. I had substituted cheddar 'cause I'm not that found of feta with eggs. My bowl had a little thin slice of cheese on top of the overcooked scrambled eggs. Had cottage cheese with it so can't comment on potatoes. The egg dish was really really ordinary, not even as good as I could do at home. Maybe it's the flapjacks, or the fancier omlets that people like. Or maybe it's the lunch. They're not open for dinner, only until 7 for sunset small plates. Maybe I'll try it for lunch. Came here for my great aunt's 99th Birthday! I love the views from this place, and how spacious the eating area is. The service is great, and the price is really good for bottomless mimosas. I'd say the only thing I didn't really care for was the food. Buffet style, most things were kinda bland. But for the price they charge i guess it's not a terrible deal. I would say this place is good for larger family gatherings in the area, especially when you want the food to be pretty open to all types of people (buffet means vegetarians, etc are good to pick what they want and avoid the rest). I've been for lunch a few times, and the view is spectacular! I live close by, so it's a nice place to go to for lunch, or for a sunset cocktail! I came for brunch once with girl friends, and it was ooookay. The restaurant itself (indoor seating) isn't super extravagant, but the outside patio is much better. I wouldn't go for brunch again, mostly just lunch! The menu is AMAZING. So many delicious things to order. Very happy and surprised with the options. When your company wants to take you to a nice restaurant and the default Karl Strauss is closed down, you go to another nice place. Canyons is said place for us. I work about 10 minutes from here and I do say, they have the best sweet potato fries i've ever had. During lunch they have salads, entrees, and typical lunch things like soup/salad combos, but everything's country club prices. I think the sandwich was about $13. I would expect something big for that but it wasn't huge, it was just mediocre sized. The location is great, they're on the canyon edge, looking over the golf course and you CAN see the ocean from the clubhouse. It's quite a beautiful venue and to be honest, if I were to renew my vows, I'd think about having a reception here. The staff wasn't exactly the most attentive though, they had to be flagged down for any issues and half our table (of 8 people) didn't get the food until late and two of us got it really late (10 minutes after the first plate was served). Mediocre food, high price, but beautiful view for a nice lunch. This place is definitely A-ok. read more

Because of a great Thanksgiving meal last year (or previous year) at about $25.00, including mimosas, I invited some out of town guests to share with us another Thanksgiving meal. A table became available after a call back that a cancellation freed up a table. We were so excited. Unfortunately the meal was very disappointing: 3 slices of overcooked, dried turkey, no green beans offered, brussel sprouts were undercooked, and inedible, (I almost choked on trying to eat one), the dressing was sticky and not good, sweet potatoes were just okay. The deserts were awful: both pumpkin and apple pies were served in a Pot Pie pastry, with a spoonful of pumpkin pie filling and 4 slices of apple with a spoon full of ice cream. Tables were empty around us, but the folks who were there are over 50, generally. And the music was loud, and was obviously for teenagers, and/or for those who like pornographic lyrics, embarrassing to say the least. The meal for 4 cost me $230.00 plus gratuity. Had I realized the price had more than doubled, I would have gone elsewhere. The service was great and the ambience was what we expected, with the exception of the inappropriate music (if you can call it music). I'll not be going back to the Canyons restaurant. Another plus was coffee, champagne & mimosas were included in the $29.95 price per person, which I thought was fair. Here is where they lose star(s): it was the service! The service NOT the server! ohmygoodness! I felt so badly for our server, Jason. I do not even know how he pulled it off. We were seated outside (such a beautiful day) & they only had ONE server,,,,ONE for approximately 10 tables or more. I'm talking about 45 people or more! That kid was going back & forth non-stop with grace trying to bring drinks to that table, food to another, refill coffee, you name it. And folks were grumbling too! This is a problem with management. Not all managers have the ability to organize. We hated to do it ( we didn't want our server to get in trouble) but twice had to get up & find someone else to refill our drinks (after waiting about 15 minutes) & finally in order to pay our bill. We were seated outside because although we were there when they opened we were informed all the tables inside were reserved. No problem. However, each time hubby & I went inside to try another treat, we noticed most of the tables an hour later were still empty yet there were 4 or 5 servers inside (?) Management should have had the common snese to send another server out to help. Would we recommend? Absolutely! The Crossings golf course opened in August, 2007, and the Canyons restaurant and bar debuted when the beautiful clubhouse was opened. The restaurant has a panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean, the rolling hills of Carlsbad, and of course, some of the city's traffic. The light, airy feeling of the clubhouse perched on top of the hill is ideal for a mixed California cuisine. I had a steak salad for my first visit, which was really a serving of nicely prepared sliced steak on a bed of al dente green beans mixed with a Point Reyes blue cheese sauce. It was terrific. The flavor of the cheese with the beef is a classic combination, and I found myself rolling the beef in the sauce for every bite. My guest had a halibut po'boy which was both well presented and greatly enjoyed. Upon my return to the Canyons, I had a prosciutto and shrimp fussilli pasta dish that was well prepared and again presented nicely. The food on both occasions was very good (and matched the ambiance of a golf club). The service was very friendly, but on both occasions the food was delivered slowly. The food was 4 stars. The Sunday brunch is a buffet: an omelette station, a pastry table, salads, breakfast foods, some lunch foods. There was a good variety, they tasted decent for a buffet, and I got full. *If you have allergies or even food sensitivities, I'd highly recommend you order food directly through your waiter. Avoid the buffet. Nothing is labeled; foods are not obvious what allergens they have (the scrambled eggs have cheese, but they are one color so you can't see it); and things are cross contaminated. I did not have good luck, and I'm regretting the risks I took. 5 stars for the bottomless mimosas. Our waiter kept our glasses filled. 1 star for crummy customer service leading up to the brunch. I called multiple times (regarding a very simple question), and left multiple messages on various extensions over multiple days, to no avail. Most extensions didn't even have a voicemail greeting to know you reached the right department... not that it mattered, because they weren't returning the messages anyway. After I left a testy message on the GM's voicemail, I finally got a returned call from the main person I was wanting to speak with... who left me a voicemail stating to call him at extension xyz and leave him a message so he can call me back. My conclusion: nobody answers their phones, and they don't care. 1 star for lying on Yelp:. there's a contact button, which states they respond within an hour. After 4 hours I gave up. read more

TLDR: First impressions were very poor customer service, but Sabrina (one of the hostesses) went above and beyond to salvage our experience and help us enjoy a great meal and bottomless mimosa. Sabrina gets 5 stars, restaurant gets 3.5. Full review: My girlfriend picked this place because of its reviews mentioning its great customer service. Unfortunately, that wasn't our first impression. Our first hostess seemed frazzled, which is why I initially brushed off her decision to seat us in the windiest dining area, but then mentioning that the preferred area was on the otherside of the restaurant (wth?). When she finally seated us in the preferred area, we were left without cutlery, water or a drink order taken for 10-15 minutes before I walked over to the hostess stand and mentioned that no one took our order. The hostess (upon my arrival at the stand) said "are you ready to order?" I told her that we hadn't been attended to and she said that orders were taken at the bar "as she'd told us." This was untrue... she'd said no such thing. As I walked unhappily back to our table, she followed and told my gf and I that when she originally sat us, she'd also told us that orders were taken at the bar. My gf reiterated that she did not and then she half-assed apologized, saying something to the effect that she was "sorry we didn't hear her say orders were taken at the bar." More than annoyed, we walked to the bar to order, where the bar attendant asked us what we'd like to order before he'd even gotten to the POS machine. We had to mention our order details 2 or 3 times to make sure he had all the items (to his credit, he had to ask if one custom adjustment was allowed). We paid and then we were given our order number to take to our table and told our order would be brought out to us. Another 10-15 minutes later, we realized we hadn't received our drinks, so we flagged another hostess to ask where our bottomless sangrias were. She told us that our drinks should be picked up at the bar immediately after paying for our orders and the bar attendant should have given us our drinks there. At hearing this, we became visibly upset at yet another easily avoidable screw-up and shared our annoying and unsatisfactory experience so far. She was immediately apologetic for our service, made no excuses and offered to comp our drinks and personally make sure they arrived at our table. We were so grateful to finally have great service and proceeded to have fantastic service due to the diligence of Sabrina taking ownership for ensuring we enjoyed our time at the club's restaurant (thank you, Sabrina!). When the sangrias we ordered ended up being not quite what we liked and we asked for mimosas instead, she brought out 3 varieties of juices for us to mix with our champagne and regularly stopped by to see how we were. Thankfully, Sabrina was there to save the day and we enjoyed the kale salad with salmon, the house burger, and an amazing acai bowl with our drinks (the sangria wasn't great, no fruit, and the champagne for mimosas was 3 stars out of 5). read more
