I don't understand the high reviews. I've had worse, but I'd still consider this sub standard for pastas that ring up over $20 a piece. Really wanted to love this neighborhood joint. The predecessor Italian restaurant in the same spot was vastly superior. The Arancini were balls of paste. Nice fry but the texture just isn't right. It shouldn't taste like a refried bean ball. The chicken parm was not crispy at all, the chicken was gristly, and the marinara sauce lacked depth and needed more herbs, spice, and time to develop flavor. The pasta was al dente, though. The pesto cavatelli was fine but pretty one note. A tad too stodgy and not fresh enough. I'd give this a 2.5 star if I could. Won't be ordering from here again, much though it pains me. read more

This is a long overdue five-star review, but I'm finally checking it off my list. Capa Tosta is a phenomenal place - the food and people are wonderful! My partner and I came here for Valentine's Day, and it was an "escape" because the ambiance and food were on point. The dessert was the perfect ending to a beautiful Valentine's Day dinner. After a wonderful experience there, I knew I had to take my sister and her friends there as the place for dinner before we painted the town red (as part of her bachelorette weekend). The bachelorette dinner celebration was held in April and the team at Capa Tosta really took good care of us. They made our table look and feel extra special for the occasion, and my sister (bride-to-be) LOVED every minute of it. Having delicious food, kind company, and celebratory vibes really set the night off to a great start, and I'm so grateful to Sam and his team at Capa Tosta. Oh! And I wish I had pictures of the food, but we forgot to take some because we jumped straight to eating (that's how good the food looked, smelled, and tasted!). read more

Hidden gem in Pleasant Plains/Columbia Heights. I drive up Sherman Ave and always see this place... finally stopped in last night and was not disappointed! Familiar Italian favorites, house-made pastas, handcrafted cocktails, Italian wines, wonderful service. We had the Burrata, Frito Misto, and Meatballs Al Sugo to share. For my entree I had the Chicken Marsala, sooo good. Exactly what a Chicken Marsala should be. My friends had the Cavatelli Pesto, Penne Alla Vodka, and Eggplant Parm. All simple classics done right. We were able to grab a seat for four without reservations on a rainy Friday night. This will be my new neighborhood Italian spot. Looking forward to dining on their patio in the summer time. read more

From top to bottom, our dinner at Capa Tosta was a deliciously memorable first visit. The epitome of a warm and welcoming neighborhood spot, Capa Tosta will whisk you away to an intimate, family home dining experience. Service was prompt, attentive and accommodating. We ordered the Brussel sprouts and Meatballs al Sugo to start. The Brussel sprouts were cooked to perfection--the right amount of crispy meets melt in your mouth tender. The balsamic glaze and manchego cheese combined for a delicious rich savory sweetness meets subtle salty. The Meatballs got top marks from the meat eater at the table. We ordered the Tagliolini alla Norma and Rigatoni alla Vodka for our mains. The Tagliolini was cooked al dente on the mark, layered in a flavorful, cherry tomato sauce with delicate roasted eggplant. The burrata really makes the dish, slowly mixing into the pasta to deliver a creamy rich complement. The Rigatoni got a strong 4 stars, with the sauce making a a solid impression. Looking forward to our next meal! read more

Overall, solid Italian food. The No. 9 cocktail was well balanced. The frito misto was an excellent start with a combination of meaty calamari, succulent zucchini, and spicy peppers. The Bolognese was average. The lobster/crab ravioli had really good texture and taste. To end things, the tiramisu was not to miss with its use of real mascarpone! The service was decent, there was a seeming lack of experience but they were friendly and accommodating. The restaurant is very cute, it would likely be super crowded if it was in a more central location. Overall, a cute place a bit off the beaten path but would recommend if wanting a solid Italian meal! read more

This place was super cute and delicious! We sat outside and they asked if we wanted to be moved in because it was going to rain. The waiter was friendly and pleasant. All of the staff members made sure we were taken care of. My husband got he last a and was not disappointed. I got the gnocchi in a mushroom cream sauce, so delicious and the mushroom flavor was spot on, the inside had pleasant music and was nicely dim lit. I highly recommend. The caprese a was the only thing that could have been better, but it wasn't bad. read more

This is place is a goldmine !!!! Drink made by an artist!! Handmade pasta's and pizza's, incredible appetizers, a fennel salad to die, and don't even get me start on the deserts!! Uni will love the cozy ambiance and wonderful staff... honestly, what more can you ask for !!! So, we went as a part of restaurant week. The red house wine had a nice taste plus a high alcohol content. We really loved the eggplant parm and the chicken parmigiana. I personally got the tagliatelle and it was just as good, though the chicken parmigiana looked more filling. The only criticism was that the food could have had a little bit more salt for added flavor. Besides that there's nothing bad to say about this spot. Just had a fantastic night at Capa Tosta with my girlfriend! We enjoyed Pesto Cavatelli, Rigatoni alla Vodka, and Prosciutto & Burrata. Delicious and authentic! Shoutout to our server, Arturo - super friendly and helpful! He joked that, being Italian, I should've known to get the Bolognese on a Sunday (my Mimi is probably rolling in her grave). Can't wait to try it next Sunday! Excited to hear their chef's opening Jojo's Brick Oven Pizzeria at 905 U St NW on 5/9 - can't wait to try it out! I absolutely love this restaurant. It's cozy and casual with top notch food. The fritto misto was excellent. So delicious with the perfect texture. I was pleasantly surprised that I quite liked the zucchini in it. It had just the right amount or calamari, shrimp, and zucchini with calamari dominating the fish which is how I prefer it. My tagliatelle was quite tasty too. Service was friendly, and the food came out quickly. I cannot wait to return! read more

(Edit: after repeated pestering comments from the owner, I'm editing my review to focus instead on apparent lack of desire to focus on the content of my comment, which was the uninspired food preparation and lack of professionalism in attacking customers. Yes the aesthetic is weird, but not why they aren't a good restaurant, it was a side note. But I would make a point of not returning based on the owners attitude alone.) The menu is not that interesting - if you're going to have dishes like chicken parm and spaghetti and meatballs, the execution should be phenomenal, but the food was solidly average if not below. Like my friends who don't cook could boil pasta and use jars of sauce and get a similar result. And at the price point, I would rather have eaten at Olive Garden for better flavor. Glad I tried it given its a rare new neighborhood spot. would not recommend it to friends for food quality but would recommend just to hang out (edit: would no longer recommend) read more

I recently had a terrific surprise birthday party for 38 for my husband. We had to do the party downstairs because of the limited mobility of my mother-in-law. The whole evening was perfect. We arrived about 1/2 hour after the guests and entered to the playing of Happy Birthday on the sound system. Reza could not have coordinated everything any better. Everyone raved about the food served buffet style and the bar service worked well with everyone being served at their seat. My husband said it was the best party he had been to since our wedding. Sam, the party coordinator, was able todo all the arrangements online and was also great. Thanks to everyone who was involved that night. read more

I've been to Capa Tosta several times now, usually with family. Every time we've enjoyed a great meal together, being welcomed in by Aldo on behalf of his family and the rest of the team. There aren't any gimmicks or things done for the sake of being trendy -- simply a menu with a nice variety of apps, salads, pastas and mains. As well as wines and a cocktail list with a few classics alongside some more unique house creations. The thing is, we're a family that shares, and without exaggeration every single thing I've tasted at Capa Tosta has been particularly delicious and well executed. At this point, that's most of the menu. The dishes are cooked with care and expertise. It's a family-run restaurant, with Aldo's mom ensuring that everything is flavored just right. There are no tricks or weird spins just for the sake of standing out. Yet things are a little bit tastier than elsewhere. Everything they serve has really hit the spot. The arrabbiata actually has a kick of savory chili peppers mixed in with the bright tomato sauce. The spaghetti vongole has the brininess of the clams balanced with the perfect amount of garlic and acidity from white wine. The orecchiette Pugliese features the pleasant bitterness of broccoli rabe dancing with sausage and ricotta salata. And the tagliatelle bolognese is hearty, rich, and lovingly made. The meatballs, crispy artichoke, eggplant parm, and fritto misto appetizers are all excellent. And there isn't a pasta that wouldn't please. The main dishes include a few standbys like chicken parmigiana and a daily special or two, which are also very satisfying. This is the type of place where you think you know what to expect, but things are just a little better anyway. Even the first time we visited, Aldo treated us like friends or family. There is a true feeling of hospitality, where we're not just customers but guests. All of this makes Capa Tosta an amazing place to have in the neighborhood, since it can make a regular evening turn into something special. read more

I went here for a birthday dinner with a large group and it was truly one of the best dining experiences I've ever had! The food and drinks were great but what really stood out was just how above and beyond the staff went to make sure we all had a great time. I was surprised with two different birthday cocktails that were very tasty and creative and an awesome tiramisu. Pro tip: If you are okay with one person in your large party picking up the tab, I highly recommend you ask to play credit card roulette. You won't regret it! read more

I cannot say enough great things about this restaurant!! Our first time here and it was such a surprise!! I was visiting my god daughter down the street and we drove by and decided to check out the menu since I like to go to neighborhood places. The service by Aldo was amazing!! It's a family run business where Nona in the kitchen makes everything (literally everything) from scratch! We got the bruschetta topped with creamy burrata and the fried crispy mozzarella !! Delicious!! Followed by the special tagliata with creamy truffle sauce and shitaki mushrooms and the squid ink pasta with lobster! Perfectly seasoned and cooked!! Followed by a caffe latte and cappuccino with cannoli and bombaloni !! The ricotta filling and cream filling went so well with the crispy outer shells!! Will definitely be back if I'm in the area!! Come here and support local business by eating delicious well executed Italian food while meeting the entire family!! Bravo!! read more

Amazing homemade pasta! You can definitely taste the difference between pasta here and other restaurants in the area. It has this satisfying bite that is comforting, plus the sauces are out of this world! The eggplant with bucatini is one of the best you will have. The sauce is just soaked up in each noodle and each bite has a rich tomato and acidic profile. Highly recommend that dish and the chicken Marsala. The mushrooms are delightful and have the perfect consistency to bind to the pasta. It could use a dash of heat from chili flakes or Calabrian chili, but otherwise it is superb! Wine selection is nice. They have something for everyone if you are looking for deep reds or light roses. The bombolini is to die for. This donut is fluffy on the inside and but has a crispy exterior texture. The cream filling is insanely good. I couldn't get over how tasty it was. Highly recommend this place! read more

The patio is nice on a nice evening. I ordered the lobster and crab ravioli in bisque but the serving size was ridiculously small for the price. I then got a more appropriately sized, albeit still expensive, dessert. Staff was friendly but the server didn't check on us pretty much at all our entire time there (~2 hours) though the manager (I presume that's who it was) did. I tipped the customary amount but the service was so meh, it had me questioning my decision after the fact. I more than likely won't be back. read more

I had traveled in 3 times in the past and I didn't find the real Italian food in DMV, I just have one the best one in Georgetown. Capa tosta is a quaint neighborhood Italian restaurant, located in Columbia Heights. It offers some very friendly prices and a welcoming patio area. The food was all solid -- we got the fried rice balls to start, gnocchi burrata, tagatelli bolognese, and the tiramisu to finish. All very tasty and homemade! What a great addition to the neighborhood! A great place to come for authentic Italian food, great drinks, and amazing service. This is a must try place if you're in the area and like Italian food! The ambience is very laid-back and welcoming, the food prices are perfect, and the portions are huge! This is the perfect place to come for a low-key lunch, or a nice dinner. I must admit that when I initially saw the menu, I knew my eyes were bigger than my stomach-- but I had to personally sample three of the pastas. My hubby opted for the fettuccine bolognese (not pictured because my husband ate it faster than I could photograph). I ordered the eggplant Parmesan, Rigatoni alla Norma, and the cacio e Pepe. Every. single. dish. was cooked to al dente perfection. I didn't have room for dessert but I decided to take my pasta leftovers to go to enjoy the next day so that I could sample the delicious tiramisu. I saw it arriving to the table next to us in an unbelievable presentation and knew I had to try it. Needless to say, I'm already planning my next visit. I recommended my friends to have dinner here and it was the worst mistake I ever made. Don't let yourself foolish by the pictures, this place is awful! We ordered caccio peppe (it was the first time in my life that I got this kind of pasta without a Parmesan bowl and it also seemed that the spaghetti's were reheated from yesterday!!). Then we had the gnocchis because I saw them on Yelp and looked nice. But they were terrible!!!! They were raw and the sauce was like the one that they sell in cans at whole foods or Trader Joe's. Probably more like Trader Joe's... anyway. If you love food and you hate to waste money, better avoid this place and eat something at home!! read more

Awesome food and awesome service. Relatively new, family owned restaurant. This restaurant was made with family love and you can feel it in the ambiance. Many ingredients are home made, everything tastes fresh. I got the chicken penne vodka which was very tasty, the free bread they offer is also delicious. As New Yorkers, we are very picky with food as we have so many options in our city. I can tell you that this restaurant meets New York food standards. We ordered different appetizers and pastas to try different things. My favorites: burrata salad, artichoke, chicken parmesan, bolognese pasta and eggplant, yes eggplant! My husband hates eggplant and didn't want me to order it, but he loved it! Cocktails were amazing too! The servers were very friendly and professional as well. The La Catrina was SO GOOD. It was a little sweet, was fairly sour (which is my preference), and the smokiness of the mezcal complimented it well. I decided to order the margarita flight after so I could try a few of their other drinks. I've been places where the flight is more of a sample size, but these were full sized margaritas. I ordered the mango, the strawberry, and the tamarind. I loved all of them, but I think the tamarind was my favorite. I got mine with thd standard tequila, but I think you can get them with mezcal instead for a slight upcharge. As for the food, everything I had was really good. The chips came with both a red and a green salsa. I love salsa Verde, so this was a nice surprise. The red salsa had a smokiness to it that I didnt anticipate, but it was really good. And the salsa verde was perfect. Chips were pretty standard. My shrimp tacos were really tasty! They had a good flavor and the Chipotle mayo was the perfect addition. The shrimp were a little overcooked, but the flavor made up for it. I also decided to order the flan to end my meal. I don't think I've ever had flan, so I have nothing to compare it to, but I absolutely loved it. It was a large portion and was super smooth (I was a big fan of the texture) and caramel-y and sweet. It could definitely be split between 2 people. Service remained great throughout my time there. It did start to fill up a bit by the time I left (with maybe 3 more groups coming in). I think there was only one server on, and she was hustling to make sure everyone was taken care of. There was both indoor and outdoor seating, with most opting to sit outside, though I chose to be inside. I definitely plan to come back! It looks like they have a great happy hour, which I am looking forward to trying.

And the drinks were between $8-10. Happy Hour ends at 7pm. My favorite of my taco selections: Al Pastor! It was the winner to me because it was bursting with flavor and freshness. My drink of choice was a tequila soda-worthy pour! It hit the spot. Overall, I had a great time and would stop by again for more of those tacos and a drink.

They actively don't want diners and people who want to hang out and be social. For drinks on the menu they won't make them unless you come with your own mixers. There's many folks who have been coming there for years and it's clear the current owners would like them to go away. Which is distressing since these are the folks that kept this place alive in 2020. The general gist of the place is "get out".

Yalla to Yalla!…read more This place is immaculate! We walked in right when it opened since it opens around 5pm. We were the first people there and honestly felt like we were treated like royalty! We got to decide where we wanted to sit since there was about 7 of us! I didn't think my party was hungry, but the second we saw the menu our mouths began to drool. So good, we ordered a second plate! It was seasoned and cooked to perfection! They didn't have our usual flavors for hookah so we ended up with Double Apple and Watermelon mint. Not my favorite flavors, but this was probably the smoothest hookah I've ever had in the DMV! I was genuinely so shocked!
