Heard about this place from a friend and at first thought he was messing with me. Glad I took his recommendation. This is my new favorite place for steak and potatoes in the Detroit area! First get over the fact that, although it's on a busy and well kept stretch of Gratiot, the side streets around this place are total ghetto. They have a security guard watching the parking lot so it's completely safe. Steaks are cooked to perfection. I like the nice char that they get when cooked here. Even ordering a 24 oz Delmonico (ribeye) it was cooked to perfect temperature inside. Baked potatoes are gigantic and the flavor is amazing! The beer steins look like something Andre the Giant would drink out of. Onion rings are the best I've had in the area. Thick cut with a nice crunch to them. The appetizers in general were pretty good. Atmosphere is great. Servers are very friendly. Definitely a hidden gem that I'm glad to have had recommended to me. I ordered for the first time from this restaurant. The food was very good for the price. However, the young lady, Deborah, answering the phone ruined the entire experience and made it so that I would NEVER order here again. When my order arrived, I noticed that my dessert, a slice of cheesecake, had been packaged by simply wrapping it in Saran wrap and having been shoved in with the plastic utensils and condiments included with my order. Needless to say, it didn't travel well -- it arrived as a mashed up mess. I called the restaurant and spoke to Deborah who identified herself as a manager. I explained the situation. She said that "this is the way it's been since COVID-19, if you have a problem, call Door Dash, not us." I explained that it wasn't a Door Dash issue, it was a packaging issue -- she said I was wrong. This woman managed single handedly to ruin an experience that probably would have earned a 4 or 5 star review otherwise. The cheesecake represented less than 10% of my order total -- to have offered some concession on a future order shouldn't have been an issue -- but, for this woman, apparently, it was. So, despite a delicious steak, a nice piece of cod and well-executed mashed potatoes, I can't see myself ever ordering here again -- if that's how they value customers, they can keep their food and their attitude. read more

The talk is true about this place. The food was out of this world good. We got there with a few parking spots open, the door was in the front but we walked by it a few times. At first glance it can kind of go for a back door in a way. We got in and sat down, it was dark with a very chilled very relaxed feeling. I started with a bowl of the ultimate chili, it was smothered in cheese and onions and was great. It was a little on the salty side but it still was amazing to taste. I also ordered the BBQ chicken with fries and coleslaw. Although I did not touch the coleslaw the chicken was absolutely amazing. The skin was crispy and it reminded me of the BBQ we would have on the weekends in the neighborhood. The fries were good but honestly I was too occupied on the chicken to eat the fries. My Wife ordered the full slab of ribs with fries and a baked potato with the world on it. Although I did not try any of that, she says that the ribs were amazing and the baked potato was just as amazing as the chili was. We have nothing but good things to say to this place. I went back again with a friend who wanted to go. This time I ordered the Delmonico and it was really good. I was truly stunned at the difference from my first visit here. It was seasoned well, cooked as I ordered (medium well) and no gristle. I'm not sure what happened my first visit here but I hope that was just an isolated incident. I hadn't been to Capers in a couple of decades and I can say that they haven't changed. They still suck. Ordered a T-Bone, cut thin, a steak is supposed to be thick, around 3/4" of an inch. This was barely above pancake thickness and it wasn't decent quality. Everything's a la carte. Not even a bread basket, no rolls, no bread sticks, not a cup of soup. All the sides are extra. A baked potato, it's huge but it's like $8. No salad comes with dinner, it costs $4.50 for a small plate and it's a one trip only to the salad bar. They employ minimalist ideas with their lack of "salad bar offerings". Slow moving, waited in line for 45 minutes while tables sat empty or not cleaned. The place needs a massive overhaul for appearances and aesthetics. 2 of the waitresses are good, Lisa and Phyllis. Phyllis has been a waitress so long that I think she took food orders at the Last Supper. It looks as bad on the inside as it does for the exterior read more

As an avid foodie and lover of steak; I was excited a few years ago to be working right up the street. Whether it was lunch or dinner time, I was guaranteed to enjoy my food here. Fast forward to now; not so much. Customer service used to be great; I remember being impressed by the waiter that remembered everyone's order without writing it down, no matter how large the party (I think he's still working there), and the food being too much to gobble down at one sitting. I went on a Thursday night and was totally disappointed in everything from the service to the food. I ordered two delmonico steaks, medium and two baked potatoes. After waiting a long time for my food; the steaks arrived and were not hot. I was expecting something fresh off the grill. I don't know if the waitress forgot about the order, but it appeared as if it had been sitting there for a while. The second steak was a little warmer; I literally had to request that they send my food back to be zapped in the microwave. I didn't even get to the fact that the potatoes came out wrong, not how I had ordered them. The last straw was the drinks; I think there was something wrong with the ice. I had an ice water that tasted funny, then the ordered a pop and it tasted funny as well; we deduced it was the ice. Swear...I drank nothing in there. They don't have bottled water, I just chalked it up as a loss, ate my food (just because I paid for it), and left to get Checkers. So sad. They've really fallen off, I was upset. Somethings are better left alone. The restaurant is small and outdated but the food is great! The environment is cozy and the waitstaff is very nice and friendly. If you want a really GOOD steak/meal, you will not be disappointed. The other entrees are really good too. My go to spot for a full steak dinner! I absolutely love this place for the steak, baked potato and broccoli. I get nothing else (by choice lol) but everyone I knows that order different says everything else is delicious. Although the dining area is very small and compacted, I wouldn't change anything about it. Makes people feel like family and spark up conversations and just have a good time. This is one of those places that you ALWAYS look forward to a wait. Rain, sleet or snow.. people will wait an hour, 2 even in the snow to eat here! So that's saying a lot. Play the lottery if you can come straight in and sit down and eat at any time in the day Carry out orders are not an all the time thing. 1st you have to actually go in to put your name and number on a list to even be able to make a carry out order. But if they are slammed in the dining area they cut off carry out orders completely. The staff is really really friendly which makes it that much more easier to want to come in. Three and not Four stars due to the fact that my 18oz Delmonico came to the table looking flat, grey, overcooked and about 4 oz light on portioning. Staff was very friendly, seems like a nice neighborhood kinda joint. Not at all dive or diner like, as some people have mentioned. French onion soup was very nicely done. Baked potato arrived to the table cold/tepid, which stinks. I could have enjoyed a.little potato while I waited for my 14oz Filet Mignon, which was indeed bad ass, and damn near perfect. The ribs on this Thursday were fantastic and only $15 for a full slab. They were expertly done. My Belvedere martinis were great and for less than $13 I had two. Poor wine selection, shoddy beers. I just know there's a learning curve that I will get, and soon. Stay away from the Delmonico steaks and go for Filet. Other than that we showed up Thursday night at 5:45, and there was a line to the front door. Not a terrible wait, about a half an hour. Very narrow aisle way made it dicey when folks walked out carrying to go bags or w kids. Def give this place a shot, just remember my provisos. read more
