Capers is housed in a small, rather nondescript building on the south-east side of Gratiot, just west of 8 Mile. Upon entering the restaurant, which is dimly lit, the first thing I noticed was the 70's-style formica tables, but once my eyes adjusted, I began to notice the cool art crowding the walls - the interior is nicer than first meets the eye. What I brought my family here for was the accolades-winning steak by the ounce. And my 10 ounces of filet - medium rare - was the best steak I've had in a long time. At $1.80/oz, it was only $18. Cha-ching! My daughter and hubby also really enjoyed their steaks - a NY strip and Delmonico respectively, both medium rare. My dad did not particularly love his steak - a Delmonico (medium) - but he's not a big steak eater by any stretch of the imagination, so that undoubtedly influenced his opinion. My mom was the only one who chose a non-steak option, and she said that her turkey reuben was really good. Service by Nathan was outstanding; friendly, knowledgeable, and patient. Drinks were generous at decent prices. I don't know how often I'll get to Capers, since it's a long haul from where I live in Northville, but I will definitely be back again, and if I lived nearer, this would be one of my go-to places to eat. I have had the opportunity to come to Capers a few times in the past and always passed it up. Mainly because of the location. Biggest mistake I've ever made!!! We have been to Capers several times, including last weekend because a good steak sounded nice. They have excellent steaks and the "by the ounce" pricing allows you to customize your dining experience. I ordered an 8 ounce filet, prepared medium and was presented with exactly what I ordered. We also ordered a french onion soup which was simply fantastic as well. The salad bar is fresh and well stocked with a variety of veggies, cheeses and rich salad dressings. The a la carte nature of the menu is really nice, but portions are huge! It is entirely possible to share a baked potato or order of fries with a dining companion. Another delicious treat on the menu is Janina's cheesecake. It is a soft cheesecake, evocative of Peteet's or Lucki's cheesecake with a graham cracker crust that I swear is drizzled with amaretto. Skip the strawberries on top, but definitely order the cheesecake. We have always been fortunate and have been seated right away and had great, attentive servers. The gentleman servers we have had even shake my husband's hand and thank him for his business on the way out. Awesome place for date night! I highly recommend getting the Coconut Shrimp. They're massive shrimp and they're great to share but you might not want to share after tasting them. You can't leave a steak house without ordering a steak. Capers sells their steak by the ounce and it's seasoned beautifully, cooked perfectly (tender and juicy). It's always busy and the place is small so come early if you aren't willing to wait in line. Trust me it's worth the wait. If you're old enough to drink try one of the alcoholic beverages (Piña Colada) it comes in a huge glass. It's pretty strong. It's like a mixture of Rum Chata and Malibu Rum. I Went to Capers on a Saturday night around closing and once again Capers lives up to word on the street and their reviews. Cool laid back chill environment. You have the neighborhood locals, family's, friends, and ur Saturday night daters. They added flat screens,up to date carpet and better lighting inside over the years. Now let's get to the FOOD! Great and filling,u get tons and tons of food. Great size steaks that are flavorful and tender. Man O Man! And what a pleasant surprise was the salad bar. It's absolutely delicious. They have this antipasto salad that's with the salad bar that's to die for! All my food was great tasting and plentiful. So me and my guest order Delmonico steaks, fried catfish, potato skins (loaded) mashed potatoes, baked potatoes, shrimp and broccoli... MY MY MY we ate till we couldn't eat anymore. My advice would be please be aware of ur surrounding when visiting, especially at night. The Parking sits in the back of the restaurant. Yes it has good lighting but still pay attention. You can't go wrong at Capers! This is the spot for a tender delicious steak! They're also reasonable too, so that makes it even better. However, with the new changes that Capers is going through, I have noticed that they have changed the way they make their drinks. Normally, I would come here for a top shelf Long Island because they are the best I've ever had. (Well, 2nd best to another place but I won't say) They would serve the drink in a nice tall wide glass but now, it has changed to a skinny short glass packed with ice. It seems as if I'm getting half of the alcohol I did but for the same price. Now, I am not a lush or anything but I do appreciate getting my moneys worth. The drinks are no longer getting my moneys worth. But Capers is still the spot! I like the changes they're making to the building itself, those were much needed. Capers, it's in a sketchy area, but if you can get past that, the food isn't terrible and they have a huge margarita that's quite tasty. Steak by the ounce, you pay by the ounce. The filet leaves a bit to be desired if you go with a large piece, it will have fat on it. The porterhouse is great as is the New York strip. The crowd can be a bit rough and sometimes, as occurs in the Hood, people get into disagreements and have to be escorted out by security. That being said, you should eat here once when you're in Detroit. It's no London Chop House by any means, but if you like adventure dining, then you'll enjoy Capers. read more

This is a hidden gem in my old neighborhood. Prepare to wait as they do not take reservations. We had coconut shrimp, steaks by the oz, huge margarita and beer, huge baked potato and more. All very decent. The staff Jennifer, Nate and Country made us feel at home. The staff even chaperoned my wife outside to smoke. I celebrated my birthday here and got delicious cheesecake and a public shout out too. If you have not been and are not scared of the city, I would try it at least once. Don't let the semi-sketch location and exterior fool you. The interior won't reassure you that you're in the right spot, either. But I promise you that Capers is the steakhouse you're looking for. "Steak by the ounce" isn't just a gimmick to get you in the door - you're going to get yourself a great steak! Simply seasoned, nicely cooked, quality steak. I highly recommend the french onion soup! It's super rich and always a good start to the meal. The fried shrimp with cocktail sauce was an excellent side for $8. The waitstaff is nothing to write home about, and they get pretty busy on weekends and peak times. But the prices are more than fair, and the food is great. read more

Sunday special medium rare delmonico with loaded baked potato, (broccoli, bacon, SHREDDED cheese NOT squeeze cheese; Sour cream, butter, marg on the side in a bag with utensils, napkins, and steak sauce. Sautéed mushrooms($1.50), sautéed onions($1.25), and a side of broccoli($2.95) in a separate bag on the side (Thank You!!) They're so busy that I know ahead of time to be very clear with details when ordering, and try to call my order in for pickup. I always check my steak, order, bag, etc BEFORE I leave. Not just here but everywhere. No one likes to get home to open up a bag of disappointment and probably throw it and money away and be starving but too tired to cook or complain until the following day. Capers has been great with the details even on peak dinner rush times! You can barely walk through the room full of small dinner tables, bar patrons, wait line to be seated, and pickup line, but the food is worth it!! Capers is a town jewel. You will get good service here and you will get good food. This is some of the best steak that I've had and I am not a steak fan by any means. The prices are good here and the servers are as attentive as they can be. Everytime I've come here it's been busy some days the line is out the door! So expect a little bit of a wait. The place is small and a little dated but it's clean. This place is known for its steak so that is what I would order but their other dishes are ok too if you want to bring someone who is not a steak lover. Where else, other than Brazil, can you order steak by the ounce (grams in Brazil!) or fries by the pound?....the novelty alone makes this worth a visit. Going to Capers is like stepping into the not-too-distant past: salad bar with iceberg lettuce, chickpeas, cucumbers and black olives; smoked mirrors; grand prix posters from the '80's. It should all feel familiar to you - does "My Two Dads" mean anything to you? And I'm not kidding about ordering the exact size steak of your choice. You want 20 ounces, then 20 ounces you shall have. You have a few select cuts to choose from - Delmonico, T-bone, Filet, etc. And as if it couldn't get any better, the food here is actually good. Steaks are a la carte but you can make a meal of it with some classic accompaniments. A plate of sauteed mushrooms, huge baked potatoes, great onion rings. Wash it all down with a giant soda, a 22-ounce beer or a birdbath-sized daiquiri. The place bustles, the food comes out fast and hits the table hot. If you're looking for a good steak dinner, but don't want to part with a 50, this is it. The filet typically runs about $1.10 an ounce. Not bad at all. Well worth the hike down Gratiot. Finally made it here after several years of wanting to go. It did not disappoint. When we arrived, it looked pretty old school and somewhat diner-ish. It feels like a place where I would expect to see green Jello in a cooler covered with plastic wrap. I like these kind of places. We entered, only to find that we were about 12th in line for a table. We decided to wait it out. The line moves fast, so we invested about 10 minutes waiting. As we were being seated, we were offered choice of any open table, so far so good. Right as we sat down, we were greeted by the server. "It's our first time". She explained how the "by the ounce" steak system works and to be aware of the massive baked potatoes. We ordered 2 Delmonico (8 oz and 12 oz), split a baked potato, garlic Texas toast, and we started off with a bowl of French onion soup. One negative that I noticed is that soft drinks are 5.95, but it is what it is. Jokingly, I said it was my girlfriends birthday to the server, and half the tables started cheering and giving wishes. One lady looked at me and said get her a "Shady Lady", so I did. It has to be a 32 or 42 ounces daiquiri, which she loved. Even with me helping it was a lot to drink. The soup came out quickly and wasn't too salty. Tons of cheese and croutons and it was piping hot. I'd come back just for this soup. Our steaks, potato,and toast followed quickly. It's been so long that I've had a meal that was just great from beginning to end but they did it. Considering all the food and drinks, our bill came to 47.00. Really good deal. My family and I use to frequent this restaurant a lot when I was younger. As an adult, I get it, but to me it's not worth how jam packed it is. I like that when you walk into this place you see a lot of regular folk from various backgrounds all there to get a big ass steak. The steak is great and pretty cheap when you compare to other places. Me and my wife can both get a steak (me 16 oz , her a modest 10), onion rings and frys, and two 32 oz beers for under $30. That's awesome. The old ass posters inside are straight out of the 80s and add to the feel. I'm rating this place not as a restaurant, but as a steakhouse, which is what it professes to be. The steaks are mediocre and cooked poorly. As many have mentioned, they are thin, improperly butchered (they sell their steaks by the ounce, so they have much less incentive to properly trim them. You end up with a lot of fat and grizzle.), and improperly cooked. Their steaks definitely have no char on the outside, and they have an odd flavor. It seems like they pan fry their steaks in oil, or put them under a broiler. They come out barely browned and generally overcooked. Look at all of the pics, they all look the same - horrible. Their baked potatoes are good, but they are way, way over priced. They literally charge $5 just to add bacon bits to your potato. A baked potato with cheese and bacon bits is around $10... for a potato... with cheese and bacon bits... Ridiculous. read more

As with all things in life, there are tradeoffs to be considered. Yes, Capers offers dirt-cheap steaks, and yes: they're pretty darned good for what they are. *No one* would try to tell you that what Capers offers is as good as (or even the same as), say, a 28-day dry-aged steak you'd be able to get at, say, Lelli's in Auburn Hills. It's not, and you can't expect anything of the sort. For $6.50 for a 10 oz. Delmonico, you're going to get fresh, pretty well-trimmed steak, prepared properly, if sparingly. Everything else is extra, and still very affordable. Your steak will fit the bill of one that will quash your need for a decent steak. The tradeoffs come in things like wait times (which can be very long...I waited over an hour tonight, on my feet, quite cold), tight quarters, and a no-frills atmosphere. This is not a special occasion kind of place, but fair is fair: they work very hard, they're not advertising themselves as being a special occasion kind of place, and they're absolutely not pricing themselves as a special occasion kind of place. I happened to very much enjoy my first experience. It required a good deal of patience in waiting, and I'm not sure that I'd go out of my way to come here on any given day, but if I was nearby, and had a hankering for steak, this place qualifies. It's better than "A-OK", but I wouldn't say it's "As Good As It Gets", either. No doubt about it, though: the price is absolutely stellar. No complaints, no regrets. read more

Ordered 1 baked potatoe and shared it, plus had half leftover for next day's lunch.Coles law was good, as was salad bar, one trip only for $3.50. Chose to sit at bar instead of waiting for a table. We've tried to dine here on a Wednesday and Thursday night a few months before, but the line is out of the door. So we finally decided to come on a Monday afternoon, and it wasn't busy. It was my first time here, and the waitress was friendly and offered suggestions. For an appetizer, we had the six battered shrimp which were very good. I needed a few more of those. We had the Monday special which is the T-bone steak and ordered them with mushroom and onion. That was a mistake. We received the steak and the plate was swimming in juices (see pic). The taste was not good at all, and I had to send it back. But I didn't see my waitress for over 20 minutes because she took a smoke break. When she finally came back to the table, I requested a steak without mushroom and onion. This one was cooked perfectly and was delicious (see pic). Where has this place been all my life? We had such a great experience here and I CANNOT WAIT to go back. It's a small, unassuming place. Super casual. Steaks by the ounce is REALLY reasonably priced. I ordered an 8oz filet, which was cooked perfectly and super tender. Baked potato was HUGE and cooked perfectly. French onion soup was perhaps the BEST I've EVER had, anywhere. It was almost buttery. Finally gave Caper's a try after hearing great reviews from friends and coworkers for years. Ordered online (a hassle in itself) and walked in to pick up our order and immediately regretted my decision. Place smelled like greasy fries, not steak. Five or six employees squabbling amongst themselves. Order was wrong, glad we checked before we left. Got home and unpacked our food... To call the food 'mediocre' would be generous. $7 salads consisting of nothing but greens, tomatoes and cucumber. Soggy fries. Flavorless garlic bread which was just oddly-colored toast. Frozen Kroger brand is vastly superior. Worst of all, a $22 steak with NO sear, grey throughout like it was somehow both over- and undercooked. Flavorless and extremely fatty. NOT a $50 carryout meal for two, could've done much better for less money from a chain restaurant. Horrible food, poor service, massively overpriced. Won't be back. Extremely disappointed. Very disappointing! I ordered the 12oz Delmonico medium well. Accompanied y the Sautéed spinach. The steak came out well before the side of spinach! The steak was thin and has a lot of char on it!
