In all honesty, I don't work with many lumber/wood work businesses. In fact this is only my second time ever. The ironic thing is that the first time was for this exact same table while living in the SF Bay Area & attending the Academy of Art in the city. I needed a precise circle cut in it to fit an animation drawing disc. (i.e. - Traditional, hand drawn 2D animation) I bought an inexpensive, $99 dollar, particle board, student drafting table; came with a swing arm lamp & cheap @ss chair. The first company was awesome, they did a great job for something that I had no clue on how to even attempt. Fast forward to last week. I picked up a new 27" iMac which was going to be paired with a 32" monitor. I was going to need a bit more elbow room for my computer station & animation table to be able to sit side-by-side. I needed two cuts off the sides; 4" off the left and 6" trimmed on the right. I also took 3" off the front side so I could sit closer to the animation disc while drawing. I briefly thought about attempting the job myself but after I sobered up, I realized, "Who the hell was I kidding?" I did a search of lumber yards on yelp* & Capistrano Hardwoods was one of the first few to come up. I hesitated to call because what I needed was small in contrast to what these guys do on a regular basis. (When I say small; very, very, very small.) I thought it wouldn't hurt to call & see what happens... I'm glad I did! Zack N answered the phone; I explained to him what I needed. Zack said that it wouldn't be a problem, just bring the table on down. The only thing he added was to be sure that there wasn't any metal that would need cutting. I inquired about cost, Zack said between $5 and $10. One word, "Stoked!" Within a couple of hours, I pulled up to the front of the shop & walked inside. There's a nice show room @ the front that leads to the rest of the facility. I was greeted by a gentleman who had a quizzical expression on his face as he looked at the drawing table in my hand. I asked for Zack who came out of the front office; he looked at it & then we both walked to the back of the shop. Zack mentioned that there may be chipping on the edges which I knew was going to happen but I appreciated him mentioning it beforehand. Done in five easy steps: (I say easy because I wasn't doing it & a professional was.) Step 1. Measure; adjust table saw Step 2. Cut Step 3. Apply edging Step 4. Trim edging Step 5. Sand 'And done! I'd be the first to say, I am no home improvement, power tool, kinda guy but I give much respect to those that are. What took Zack 20 minutes to do would've been at least a half day project with me fumbling around & resulting in something that might be compared to a bird house from a high school shop class. I'm joking; my finished piece wouldn't have look that good. After trimming the table, Zack asked what I was planning to do with the exposed edges. I replied by asking him what he'd recommend. Zack said I could pick up adhesive edging and apply it. He then said, I don't think we have black @ the shop, only wood grain & white. - "Do you have a preference?" I replied, no; he chose white. Now, keep in mind; I just thought that he was going to cut the table to size, say thank you, collect my $$, and I was going to be on my way. However, when Zack took his time & diligently applied the edging, cleaned it up by trimming it, then sanded the edges; I was floored. You know that saying, "There's no job too big or too small," Capistrano Woods practices it! In today's business world where customer service & professionalism seem to take second string to fast & convenient, there are still companies doing it right. I just happened to be fortunate enough to find them. I was originally quoted between $5 - $10 for the project. I gave Zack a twenty, thanked him for an awesome job and returned home to put the table back together. As mentioned before, I would've wasted so much time and ended up with something that didn't look half as great as this does. Service and Price: 5 stars The gentlemen at Capistrano Hardwood's are so helpful to me when I come in. They make suggestions for my projects and are very talented! Im not always sure of the products to use or how to achieve the look I want but their expertise has guided me through the process of my kitchen remodel. I had two pieces of trim on a custom made book case that had termite damage and needed to be replaced. I took a piece of the old trim to Lowe's, Home Depot and Ganahl lumber and all of them didn't have the size nor offered any help on how to get such a custom piece. I met a buddy at Docent Brewery and I passed by Capistrano Hardwoods and I remembered that's where my carpenter uncle purchased all his wood so, I stopped in to see if the could help. Izzy, confirmed it was custom but if I gave him 15 minutes he could make the two pieces I needed. Now I know why my uncle always purchased his materials there. I won't go anywhere else. read more

I purchased my baseboards for the entire house from Capistrano Hardwoods. Their selection is out of this world! And the prices are very good. I also found the quality of the MDF top notch. It came already primed and the profile between the different lots of boards was very consistent. I also bought matching bullnose corner pieces for the ultimate finished look. The service was friendly and helpful. They plastic wrapped the boards and loaded them up on my roof rack, but I had to secure them to the car (store policy?). Horrible customer service and the owner is a complete jerk. When they delivered our trim and baseboards first I had to help them pull from the truck and many of the pieces were damaged at the edges or broken. Then when I went to return the extra trim that we hadn't even removed from the wrapping, they claimed it was water damaged from rain (it wasn't and it hadn't rained in the 4 days we had the trim in our garage, more likely damaged before it got to us) before they even looked at the wood. To make it worse they stood at the door and made me carry in all the trim by myself. Seriously, spend your money at a company that gives a crap about customers! read more

Nice selection and friendly employees. But don't bother going there for assistance unless you've got a big enough project to warrant their undivided attention. I was completing a small (but very high quality) remodel in my home and needed help with a tricky baseboard installation. I visited their store three times to meet with the person who volunteered to help, and each time he wasn't there. I talked to a manager/owner who asked me to send photos. I went home, took measurements and emailed him. Never got a response. He mentioned that "well, its a small job." So unless you can impress them with the project (meaning $$$$), don't bother. read more

Capo Hardwoods, what can I say. I've been using Capo for years. They have (or can order) anything you can think of. From exotics to basic MDF base, this place hits the nail on the head every time. I built my own house a few years ago, and when I started looking for a front door, I found one at Lowes I liked for just over $8000 dollars. I met with Ken and he had similar doors priced literally thousands less. I ordered litlerally thousands of feet of base, and window trim, as well as several doors. We recently needed to repair door frames and a threshold in our San Juan Capistrano home that had been seriously damaged by dry-rot and termites. There was no way of knowing who made the oak threshold originally, so I could not handily order it; I had to remove what was left of the old threshold, which had some custom features in its bottom so that it would fit snugly and create a water-tight and clean transition from inside hardwood floor to outside pavers. No question, this job was way outside my skill set of a handy weekend warrior. I took the old threshold, whose ends were destroyed by termites, and Ismael, one of Capistrano Hardwoods' excellent craftsmen, who created a PERFECT oak replacement that fit back into the space beautifully. Not only was it a gorgeous replacement, but it took Ismael just about an hour to create it. I highly recommend this business for anyone who is in need of their products or services of extremely excellent craftsmanship at very fair prices! read more
