After living eleven years in New England, I thought I'd been ruined for good seafood from any other state, especially a land-locked Midwestern state. However, Caplinger's was a pleasant surprise! I had the Clam Chowda and a Crab Cake with their homemade Remoulade sauce and would get both again! The chowder had hefty pieces of clam that tasted like they were fresh from the shore. My partner had the Shrimp Po'Boy with their AMAZING Buffalo Fries. The service was efficient and met expectations. Love this place! If what you want is not on the menu, they can most likely can make it for you in the kitchen, due to the super awesome fish market on the premises. They will cook it and you can eat it there or they will cook it for you to take home. If you get a chance, try the raw filets of "grouper fingers" from the market. I pan fry them in a little butter and whatever seasonings I happen to grab out of the spice cabinet. But my favorite thing to add is Bang Bang sauce in a bottle from Aldi's. Oh. My. Goodness. I've been wanting to try this place for a while now! The lure of fresh seafood and me being from down south and all lol! It's such a tiny cozy place ! The staff were very efficient and friendly. The food was hot and delicious ! So delicious that I didn't manage any pics! I had the oyster po boy and my fiancé had the seafood Philly! The oysters were INSANELY fresh and well seasoned and were also cooked to perfection. The seafood Philly had lobster, crab and shrimp I believe .. sautéed mushrooms and onions. Wheeeew golly! We decided to try this place out for our Friday night dinner. It was all delicious and I can't wait to go back. It was busy and the place is a little small so we decided to wait outside for our carry out order. The staff was super friendly and helpful. We ordered two kids meals and two dinners and with tip, it was a little pricey at first, until I opened our containers and saw all the food. Even the kids meals came with so much food, more than our 9 and 5 year old could eat. The fried okra was amazing, fried perfectly. They do have indoor seating and bathrooms. There are outdoor tables for warmer weather. I highly recommend this place for lunch or dinner or even snack time. Dined at 2pm on a Thursday afternoon. Was able to catch a seat to eat inside. I had the Lobster Roll, which is served cold. My wife had the Lobster melt, which is served warm, and my son had the Caplinger fish sandwich special. My wife thought the Lobster melt was flavorful and satisfying and gave it a 4/5. My son said the fish sandwich was a 3.5/5, lacking a bit in flavor. I gave the lobster roll a 2.5/5. It tasted more like a ham or tuna salad sandwich, heavy on the vinegar, onion and "salad" and less on the lobster protein. I had just had an amazing lobster roll on vacation last month at a different restaurant and was hoping for something similar. This was so far off that I questioned whether it was even real lobster. Definitely would not recommend this. I tried to give my second half away but no one wanted it after a bite. A worker did come around at the end of my meal and gave us fried grouper samples and they were good. I'll give it one more try, based on the sample, and try a fried fish instead next time. They also have fresh fish to purchase. The prices seemed quite a bit higher than store prices though. read more

Do not judge this gem by the outer appearance. We shared the cod filet dinner with 2 sides. Hush puppies and Mac n cheese. The fish was moist and flakey on the inside and had a wonderful batter on the outside. The hush puppies I just didn't want to share at all delicious!!! (Hint order your own). The Mac was creamy but after the cod and puppies I was full. The staff was great I said twice while we were there. Gosh they are just so nice and friendly. My wife and I had dinner from here earlier this evening, they don't allow dine in still but we just took it home. We were so glad that this was going to be so close to us cause we've been at the ones up north, we love Caplinger's! The woman that took our order at the register was very friendly, so welcoming! The rest of the staff were very friendly as well! So that was already a great start coming here at this location for the first time, means we'll be here many more times if they keep that up! Unfortunately my favorite fish mahi-mahi wasn't on the menu today, maybe next time. So I got my next favorite the Red Snapper, had it blackened with side of green beans and I was also supposed to get a side of the chipotle slaw that I love but I confused the nice lady at the register and got a bunch of hush puppies, but that's okay, I love hush puppies too! The food was just as delicious as the Caplinger's up north, my wife ordered their sea scallops and she loved them! When we walked in I was already glad to see how clean they keep this restaurant and everything just looked great, almost makes you feel like you're on vacation! As I said before, I'm so very glad that this restaurant is so close now, I know it's been here for awhile now but I knew what Caplinger's was about and wanted the newness to get out of everyone's systems! This was my first visit to this Caplinger's location. If you have been to their other locations (mostly on the north side of the metro area) then you will pleased that they offer the same high quality food and also have the meat counter to get sea food for your own home preparation too. Although the food I ordered (The Caplinger's special sandwich with a side and beverage) was really good, I will have to wait until they can open for inside dining to give them a higher rating. When you walk in, you notice a sign about having to wait for your meal in your car since they do not have indoor seating during the pandemic. The sign suggests they will bring your order out to you, but instead, they give you a pager to let you know when to come back in to pick up your order. Not the most efficient way to minimize contact with trips inside and handling of pagers. Fortunately, we carry our own bottle of hand sanitizer to clean and stay safe. I just have no idea how often they clean each pager. The space is quite small and so I see why they don't offer indoor seating though it will be right across from the seafood deli. I really enjoy their breaded white fish and they don't skimp on the toppings which were all fresh and tasty too. For beverages, they carry Pepsi products which they dispense for you. Although I tend to get the special when I visit their locations, I can say that the side dishes they offer are worth the small upgrade price which includes the beverage as well. They are known for their collard greens, but when I saw they offered corn on the cob with Old Bay seasoning, I had to give it a try. Too bad they don't offer Cotija cheese to go with the corn because the cheese, corn and Old Bay seasoning is a summer staple at my house. The corn wasn't seasonal, so it was a bit chewy, but was still flavorful. The only real problem I had was that all the seasoning was clumped in the middle instead of being distributed equally over the cob. So, some bites had a lot of seasoning, while others had barely any. A simple thing to fix, but worth noting to be aware of it. My wife and I ate in our car which got to be a bit chilly since this isn't fast food. Depending upon what you order, you may wish to get extra napkins to avoid making a mess in your vehicle. I am so glad to see one of these restaurants on the south side (finally!), but unless you live close enough to be able to get it to go and eat at home, it is a little awkward and I am not a fan of cold seafood if I wait to get home first. I look forward to warmer weather and healthier communities, so that I can try indoor dining and just enjoy the food without all the distractions. This is exceptional. They have prepared food including lobster rolls and full fish dinners but they also have every type of seafood you can imagine to take home. From a basic crab dip all the way up to king crab legs. The take home side is like a coastal fish monger. There is a great selection of fresh such as fish and shrimp and frozen such as crab legs, lobster tails and bisques and chowders. The quality of everything is best available. The prepared food would remind you of a New England lobster house. The lobster roll has crunchy bread and tender hunks of lobster. It's relatively quick as well. The owner, Andrew Caplinger, has the patience and takes the time to provide suggestions, and caters to each and every dietary wish! The kids loved the macaroni and cheese and both adults agreed that it was by far the best fried shrimp we have ever had! One of our party swears by Andrew's fresh oysters - absolutely delicious. Those with babies and children are grateful for the high chairs and changing table in the bathroom. The restaurant is spotless. In short, everything at Caplinger's is perfect, even down to the crayons and coloring books they hand out!
