Great fried shrimp! My Gf and I wanted something close to home so we decided to give this place a shot. It's a hole in the wall and run down. However the shrimp were great. They need new stools by the bar, some paint, and a professional grade cleaning. My GF commented that she felt like she was on a boat considering how completely slanted her stool was and rocked side by side so dramatically. We watched the guy (who could barely speak English) shirk the oysters and all I have to say is that we will not ever be ordering them here. He needs to clean them better. Also, he is your waiter if you are sitting at the bar and he can barely speak English but does his best and is a hard worker. It's just not the right position for him to be in. The manager sat in his office the whole time vs greeting customers and checking on the staff. All in all I would come back for the shrimp, but that's it. If you go make sure to try the poquito moscato! I loved it and haven't been able to find it anywhere else in houston ( which blows). The moscato was the only thing that was great . Wow! Captain Benny's really surprised me. I met my boyfriend here for dinner. Fifteen minutes before, he mentioned that the pictures didn't look that great on Yelp. We were both a little skeptical because of all the bad or mediocre Cajun / fried seafood places we've tried. We got there and were instantly greeted by the friendly staff. We chose to sit at the bar and ordered calamari, oysters on the half shell, fried shrimp basket, and a corona. Calamari - not your typical batter. There was a thin layer of crunchyness that didn't overpower the actual flavor of the squid. Oysters - surprisingly good for Gulf oysters! They were fresh and decently sized. Fried shrimp - fresh, tender shrimp coated in a corn meal batter. You usually don't get that at seafood restaurants! There was also more shrimp than batter. SHOCKER! It was so good. SO SO GOOD. Even the corona was good because they have you a mug. I didn't have to struggle with fitting the lime into the bottle like I usually do and the lime juice was evenly distributed in the beer. Do I sound crazy? Overall, a great dinner experience despite having doubts. Don't be turned off by the corny boat-shaped exterior! For my beer fans they have a pretty basic selection the norm you find at restaurants in Texas: Bud, Coors, Michelob, Corona PLUS they also do Micheladas (basically a bloody mary with beer) If you love oysters on the half shell-- it's pretty cheap here. Most of my friends bought two dozen. I wanted to sample the oysters, gumbo and fried catfish kiddie portion. My gumbo was good, it tasted like it was flavored with catfish in some part of the process but I failed to see any in the both or taste an actual piece. I figured there'd be a 50/50 chance of catfish in the gumbo so that's why I bought a kiddie portion lol Also, it tasted like there was white pepper (I love white pepper), but none to season on the table-- just regular black pepper. (sadface) Tasty all the same :) They give you tons of horseradish, lemon and cocktail sauce with your oysters. No need to ask for more. They also serve these condiments per tray so each dozen (tray) my friends had-- they had more than enough. My catfish was lightly battered :) and a fairly thin filet and came with a few fries. I have to say this is a good portion for a kid. As for me and having two other things come before it: this pretty much filled me up. I like having the option of buying the kiddie portions, despite not being 12 and under. ALWAYS a plus for a restaurant. In a group, it was easy to split the bill up at the register and since there's no tip jar I just gave my tip straight to Marvin. He was super helpful and was able to chat with us a bit. read more

I was pleasantly surprised at the food and atmosphere here. They are located in front of a Target which I frequent and decided to try it for dinner one night. I prefer sitting at the oyster bar, I think you get better service there. The staff is nice and there are 3 TVs on the boat. I shared the following: 1. Gumbo: delicious. 2. Dozen gulf oysters. Don't expect five star quality but it's a bargain for the price. 3. A fried catfish dinner. Comes with fries and hush puppies. This was the market price on a Sunday night in February, so I can make no warranties for what you will get when you go, but go you should to see if the good crew at Captain Benny's will smile upon you too. Cup of seafood gumbo was liberally filled with crab chunks and tiny sweet shrimp. The rice and okra were still intact but I liked that it was more of a soup than a stew consistency. Still salty but there were plentiful saltines. Jalapeno boudin had a fun, snappy casing that I enjoyed biting and a good steady heat and pleasing texture. Boudin balls had a craggy batter on them and were a bit more rice-based but still quite good. Servers were overworked but sweet and energetic. I've lived in Houston most of my life and I've never been to this place, but I've driven by it MANY times! So my husband and I finally tried it a few nights ago. It's cute on the outside (shaped like a boat) and equally cute - but small - on the inside. Also - they DO have outdoor seating but it's maybe 4 or 5 tables and it faces busy Main St. Definitely go here when there's not an event going on at NRG Stadium. We were there on a moderately busy night with nothing going on at NRG stadium. The reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is that the waitstaff could be a bit more attentive. They did not check on us very often and we had to wait a long time for our check. It's kind of ridiculous to be so inattentive in a place that small! However - the food is awesome! The fried shrimp and the broiled catfish are amazing, and I was very pleasantly surprised by their hushpuppies. Usually hushpuppies are hard on the outside and dry on the inside, but these had a nice crust and were super soft inside. We also had the boudin balls for an appetizer which are amazing, but very spicy. I also love that they have a basket of crackers, a napkin dispenser, and sauces right there at the table. I can't stand places that are stingy with napkins! Great food at a reasonable price - and we will definitely be back, but will probably sit at the bar instead. THE place to go when you want raw oysters. Ever since I was a child I've always come here for the freshest (and reasonably priced) raw oysters among other seafood fares. While most places use the oysters unfit for serving raw to bake, this place has a huge ice tub in the front from which they serve all of their oysters - raw or baked. Both are delicious and I ate at least a dozen of each. The seafood gumbo is out of this world and a must-have. The one star off was for the inability to find the beer that I wanted and for forgetting our order of broiled fish, which made us 20 minutes behind schedule when we were on our time crunch. read more

As a kid, probably one of my first memories eating out was here (different location, different era). I was like six or something. It was probably the first time I ever had it.. and it still is the one of the best. It's not fancy, nor does it claim to be... but they give you a good assortment of seafood and tastes great. It's refreshing considering how many fancy restaurants carefully manicure their gumbo so you get exactly one crab claw or jumbo shrimp etc. to the point where it just seems sterile. Anyhow, gumbo - always great. Fried seafood and raw oysters are the real draw here. I guess if you're looking for something less greasy, there's a grilled seafood selection. Lots of cheap beer too. We visited Captain Benny's on a friends suggestion and that it was walking distance from our hotel. The place is small and we were lucky to beat a crowd. We ordered the Fried Calamari with wonderful seasonings. For dinner we each had the sampler and even ate the coleslaw. We don't usually do that! Service was great. When the waiter realized we were very thirsty for tea, he left the pitcher. The whole atmosphere is laid back and spreads to all the customers who where friendly also. read more

I'm going to have to be a detractor here. So I was leaving the Houston area and decided I was in dire straits of requiring good food. I yelped the area and this restaurant was close to me. I read the reviews and was expecting more than I ought to have, which is really more my fault than anything else. I pulled up on a Sunday afternoon and it was dead inside, which ought to have been a sign not to enter but I did not heed any such advice. My girlfriend and I were promptly seated by an older, dour man. He wasn't very helpful in the ordering process, since he seemed to assume that we knew everything available the second we sat down. The menus had no drinks on them and yet we were supposed to know what we wanted the second we glanced upon them. Shortly thereafter I got the catfish poboy and my girlfriend got the shrimp basket. The plates were meager, like kid's food. Barely any fries, tiny hushpuppies, and barely any catfish in the poboy. When it came time to pay, we wanted the check split between cash and a card. He charged it all to the card and tried to take the cash as a tip (an $11 tip for a $22 dollar meal? Really?). It's not like he was in a rush considering the place was dead at the time, so that kind of activity is inexcusable. Long story short, this place is not some good seafood bar with an out-dated facade out front. This is basically a chain like the Denny's of seafood. It would probably be a decent place to get some food after a night on the town, but not a place with hearty food or particularly competent service. read more
